79 in santa rosa. almost feeling a little like summer, but we will have a summer-like weekend coming up. more on that in a few minutes. mike, there's a little shift in silicon valley? >> yes, kind of eased up a bit, and then speed sensors are dipping around the airport where folks come off of 87. a smooth flow of traffic. look at what is coming off 101 northbound. it's typical slowing, and we have things clearing up by the time you hit cochrane. as we are looking at the rest of the bay, we have a smooth flow of traffic along the peninsula. no delays into or out of san francisco. we have the build typical for southbound 880 coming off the castro y slowing, but no

surprises. back to you. >> thank you, mike. the unthinkable and a heartbreaking story for a family this morning. a young girl has been shot in oakland. >> we want to check in with today in the bay's bob redell who is following the story for us this morning. what do we know? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. we believe she's going to be okay. here's what we know so far. late last night in oakland a 4-year-old girl was shot in the leg and rushed to the hospital. firefighters say the shooting appears to be accidental but we don't know what led up to the shooting or if anybody will be charged in the shooting. we put the map up on the screen so you can see where this happened. near mills college if you are familiar with that area. we did reach out to opd for more details and are waiting to hear back from them. again, we understand this girl will survive. bob redell for "today in the bay." >> glad to hear she will be

okay. thank you, bob. much relief in washington after months of back and forth negotiations, the bill to avoid a government default is one step closer to passing. the deal hammered out by president biden and mccarthy passed the house. the ball now in the senate's court? >> reporter: that's right, laura. the bill is now on the senate calendar, so lawmakers can move forward with the process of getting the bill through the chamber. we expect the process to be similar what we saw in the house, and that's the bipartisan opposition to the measure. >> the bill is passed. >> with that gavel, the debt limit agreement passes the house with overwhelming bipartisan support. house speaker, kevin mccarthy,

taking a victory lap. >> this is the biggest cut and savings this congress ever voted for. tonight i hope we proved it to you again, that we put the citizens of america first. we dependant do it by taking the easy way. >> reporter: many hard-line republicans oppose the bill, but house democrats helped push it through. >> three maga republicans attempted to take control of the house floor. democrats took it back for the american people. >> reporter: in a statement, president biden praised the house and urged the senate to vote quickly, saying the agreement is a bipartisan compromise. neither side got everything it wanted. the hard fought deal faces more pushback in the upper chamber. >> the house wants us to rubber

stamp $4 trillion in new debt in exchange for -- >> this agreement is nowhere near as bad as the republican original proposal, which would have been devastating, i think, for a variety of reason and a no vote is right. >> i have to go through all the details. every time you turn over the rock there's something slimy under it. >> reporter: congress must act fast in order to avoid a potentially catastrophic debt default. some senate republicans are pledging to introduce amendments to the bill which could delay its passage, but senate majority leader, chuck schumer, warned lawmakers they may have to stay through the weekend to get that bill to the president's desk before the june 5th deadline. >> thank you for all the developments, brie. oakland city leaders are putting their support behind

what is being called the ebony alert. if passed it would create a statewide notification system similar to the amber alert. however it's specifically concentrating on black women and children. the ebony alert would activate under a few conditions, and that's if a person is between the ages of 12 and 25. also, if they suffer from mental or physical disabilities, and if the possible victim is trafficked or kidnapped. meta announced it's laying off another thousand additional employees. meta announced its initial plan earlier this year in a blog post to layoff workers and it's believed to be the second round of that plan. in another move from meta, the company threatened yesterday to pull news from its sites in

response to a new california bill. the proposal would force platforms like facebook to pay news organizations to put articles on its sites. meta argues journalist put news on its platform freely without meta requesting it. a beautiful start to our morning. meteorologist, kari hall, is going to tell us what we can expect throughout the day across the bay area. >> once again, it has been so nice, cool. we started off with clouds and already seeing breaks in the clouds. it's 54 in morgan hill, and we will see the clouds and then clear up. eventually making it up to 75 degrees. you will notice it will be slightly warmer today compared to the past few days.

we are in the upper 70s for a lot of spots, from livermore to concord reaching 79 degrees in santa rosa. just a touch warmer in san francisco with a high of 66 degrees. our valleys will have slightly warmer temperatures while the inner bay will remain about the same. we will get a look at the weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, you have a look at where we can find lower gas prices? >> yeah, vallejo leads our list. best deal is 4.11. and san josé, their best is 4.19, and same number for contra costa county. that's at concord super stop on willow pass road. thank you for reporting, all you folks that participate with

good thursday morning. welcome to june. we are starting out with san leandro temperatures in the 50s. a cool start with clouds moving by. it will clear out by 9:00 to 10:00, and sunshine the rest of the day. it will be a nice afternoon. a look ahead of the microclimate forecast coming up. san leandro traffic picking up, and same thing on the san mateo bridge. you do see there's plenty of

room to change lanes. lots of lane changing going on. we will look at the south bay and east bay as well. >> thank you, kari and mike. we have a live look at the futures ahead of the opening bell in about 15 minutes. wall street set for a flat open after the debt ceiling bill cleared the house last night. the markets fell yesterday to close out the month. it was a split decision for stocks in may, the dow dropping nearly 3.5%, and the nasdaq rising almost 6% as excitement around anything related to a.i. boosted tech and chip stocks. alphabet, meta and amazon were all up at least 10%. elon musk reclaimed the title for world's richest person with a net worth around $192

billion. this is versus $187 billion for vuitton. the average salary for pharmacist at walmart with bump to $140,000. an hourly average pay for optometrist will increase to expand primary care at the stores. right now the health stores offer behavioral health and other services. and today in the bay's kris sanchez talked to nicole aunapu mann about what it was like to

become the first native american woman in space. >> it was incredible. to be honest, i had high expectations. just one, being in microgravity and living in space. two, all the amazing work we do while we are onboard. all the expectations were absolutely exceeded. >> reporter: back in january as part of the mission, mann stepped outside the international space station for her first spacewalk to finish work preparing for solar additions in the summer. >> we want to execute the job and work well together as a team onboard the space station and with the mission control centers throughout the world we work with. >> mann said there was a lot of training and years of preparation, but that was not much of a feat for the petaluma native. she was already a colonel in the marine corps. >> i grew up in the north bay.

as a kid, honestly, i did not know what i wanted to do. i knew i was interested in math and science but did not have it all figured out as a young child. i remember looking at the stars and being amazed at the concept and the thought of going to space, but i never met an astronaut and i dependant realize that was in the realm of possibilities for me. >> mann is registered with the indian tribe in california, and while in space she carried a dream catcher her mother gaver as a reminder of her community. >> i love her energy. >> a lot of people are, like, she's done all that and what is next? >> right. she is now taking a vacation, camping and visiting family. she will travel to the bay area this september for outreach events she will do at schools.

today is a day to celebrate parents. >> today is global day for parents, honoring parents throughout the world. the united nations adopted that back in fall. we want to show off some of the great parents here on our "today in the bay" cast. we have mike with his two kids there, and bob at the top with his two daughters, and kris, her husband and two daughters, and laura and her brady bunch there. kari and her family as well. i see you all do it each and every day, so round of applause for all of the parents here on our show. >> he sees how tired we are. >> yeah, single life -- >> i want the people at home to know we also try and parent you.

quickly for this afternoon. we are headed for 66 degrees. 68 degrees in san mateo. some upper 70s in martinez. you will notice it will be slightly warmer than it was yesterday, but still mild with a high of about 77 in san josé. tomorrow it's another degree or two warmer. we are seeing that in concord and santa rosa reaching 80 degrees. saturday we are finally getting in some spots swimming weather. fairfield, 87 degrees. it will be cool near the coastline with spots along the coast. half moon bay, 64 degrees. still, maybe light long sleeved weather there, but definitely warmer in mountain view with a high of 77 degrees. on this first day of meteorological summer, we look at how numbers are averaging due to climate change. the areas in red on the map, it's four to five degrees above what our old summers used to be like going back since 1970.

we are seeing a lot of warming across the west. in fact, in san francisco our summers are now about 2.3 degrees warmer than it was in 1970, so we can see that upward trend there as our temperatures continue to warm on average. we have an additional 29 days of temperatures above normal, so yeah, definitely feeling that around the bay area as well. then we take a look at our trend where temperatures warm up go into the weekend. we know this year, as in some spots, have been unusual. we are getting ready for the possibility of rain in june for next week in the middle of the week. we will be watching that. temperatures also dipping, so in spots like napa we are going from the 80s over the weekend to low 70s early next week. it will be warm briefly for the weekend. mike, any surprises out there for drivers? >> no. the bay bridge is backed up. sorry, i wish i had a treat. but it's summer and we will see

than yesterday. let's say by about three or four degrees. 77 in san josé. 82 in fairfield. oakland will see a high of 79. less slowing because it's thursday, and things are easing up. as we look closer to the map, we are noticing 101 does have the build. more traffic coming. i guarantee it because san martin and morgan hill, a lot of slowing because of the traffic build. by the time you hit cochrane, you get back up to the speed limit. the arrow downward shows you san leandro and the nimitz. no north bay problems and typical slowing for highway 87. concord police are looking for the driver of a black sedan involved in the hit-and-run. this happened at the

intersection of willow pass road and diamond boulevard. the black sedan hit the bicyclists then pulled over briefly before driving off on 680. paramedics took the man on the bike to the hospital and he is now in critical condition. and then a 4-year-old girl recovering after being shot in oakland. this happened just after 9:00 last night. firefighters are telling us she was accidently shot in the leg. investigators are still not revealing what led up to the incident. it happened near mills college. we know she was taken to the hospital and we are still awaiting word of her condition. we have called out to police for more information this morning. and now two east bay couples recovering after a fence fell on them as they were out biking on a memorial day. they were out riding with two friends on a bike trail in berkeley near gilman street on

i-80. jonathan was out in front with a friend, and amy was 50 yards behind with another friend. a fence tipped over crushing all four people. amy suffered a happened and wrist and may need surgery. the couples say there were no safety warnings and want the fence taken down. >> it should not have happened and our whole reason for making our story even public is because we don't want this to happen to anybody again. >> caltrans says the fence was installed by a contractor as a safety precaution. the contractor, oc jones, and another subcontractor plan to go out and reinforce the fence this morning. the man accused of stabbing a bakery worker in chinatown is due in court today. he attacked the worker, and

witnesses saw him stab her several times. police later arrested the 61-year-old. he's accused of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. the court could not find an interpreter, so that hearing was moved to later this morning. if convicted he faces up to life in prison. our investigative team dug deeper into his background and found a violent history. you can watch that full report right now by going to nbcbayarea.com and watch the full investigation. and then employees are filing a class action lawsuit against the city, according to the "mercury news." the ransomware attack happened in january by a group named play. information leaked included addresses and social security numbers and driver's license data. the people that filed the lawsuit are looking for a cash

compensation and are asking city officials to encrypt all future personal data. making it more affordable for housing in san josé. charity's housing is breaking ground on a new project, and it will be a five-story building that will have one to three bedroom units and will include a barbecue space. >> nice resource for folks. today is the day we find out what bay area's pro women's soccer team will be called and what colors they will wear and where they will play, but don't expect a traditional mascot. >> growing excitement. kris, do you know? >> reporter: i don't know. we were pressing alley wagner, one of the four founders for a bit more information. she said we will like it,

though. this is what they are saying. we are here at paypal park because we suspect this is where the team will play until they can build their own facility, which is part of the plan. we expect to find out where that facility will be around 11:00 this morning when they make that announcement about the brand. the team will also reveal what it will be called, what the logo will look like, and what the colors will be. as for a mascot, when we talked with one of the founders, olympian, alley wagner, back in april, she said maybe don't expect one. >> i think you will like it and it's exciting. we feel good about where we are at and can't wait to share that with you. >> reporter: the bay area team is the 14th in the national women's soccer league and it was brought here by the powerhouse team of women led by aly wagner, and leslie osborn and danielle

let's hope they listen. >> that's an exciting time. june, we are celebrating pride throughout the month here on "today in the bay," we will bring you stories. this afternoon the city of hayward raising the flag at city hall. this is footage of last year's ceremony. that was when city leaders raised the progressive version of the flag for the first time ever. the progressive flag includes, white, blue, pink and black to represent more people of color and more of the transgender community. also at 9:00, members of the city hall will raise the flag at city hall. and san mateo county supervisors will raise the flag at 10:00 a.m. city leaders in oakland will raise a flag at 12:30. the bay area always so

inclusive. >> it is. we have the wind blowing, and all the flags are blowing and it's a nice wave. >> we will see a nice breeze picking up and slightly warmer temperatures. we have a lot going on, so let's head over to look at what is happening this weekend. we will kick it off with the giants game. their pride night is not until next weekend. we will have gusty winds and temperatures in the low 60s. some of the gusts over 25 miles per hour. as we take a look at more things going on, the san mateo county fair kicking off, the grand opening on saturday and family pride day on sunday. we will see beautiful weather out there. upper 60s as we go throughout the day. and then we have the pista sa nayon festival, and i don't know if i am saying that right. temperatures in the low 70s as

we go into the afternoon, and nice and sunny throughout the day. we have the omg family festival on saturday and sunday, and we will have mid to upper 70s for the middle of the day. mike, you seemed concerned about the san mateo bridge? >> kari, we are seeing more slowing. for a few seconds it looked like things were stopping but it's moving again. it's a steady flow of traffic. and our camera, right about here, you see the slowing past the toll plaza. maybe somebody slammed on their brakes and we know there's a ripple affect. we will track that to make sure nothing major is going on. a lot of traffic feeding off of hayward and from the san mateo bridge to the peninsula, slow. as we look ahead we know there will be more slowing as it's happening right now on 680.

let's head to the north bay with a live look outside in san rafael. we are starting out with sunshine and a little fog rolling by here and there. it's a chilly start at 46 degrees. by lunchtime, 67 and then making it into the mid-70s for today. we are seeing a warm-up across the bay area. we will look at that in a few minutes. traffic looking happier here, southbound with headlights moving nicely into the south bay.

happening now, secretary of state, antony blinken, is in norway and formerly there to meet with a group of ministers ahead of the nato summit next month. they are set to address support for ukraine. blinken recently approved $300 million of military equipment to be sent to ukraine. he will make a stop at helsinki tomorrow before coming back to the u.s. activist held a community meeting over the death of a transgender man believed to be shoplifting shot by a walgreens security guard. banko brown was killed by a walgreens security guard after he allegedly stole a bag of snacks. the security guard said he was acting in self defense, and it was decided no charges would be

filed in the case. many activist are saying the city failed brown. >> she's one of the faces perpetuating harm to the black community. >> in the meantime, state attorney says he may file charges against the walgreens security guard. we are more than a month away from independence day, but east bay leaders have a new ordinance in livermore today that holds party hosts accountable for any and all fireworks set off by guests. >> if you decide to have your friend come over and set off fireworks on your property, and they will fine you because you allowed it on your property. >> under the new law, a homeowner could be fined $500 even if they don't know which

guest set off the fireworks. to be clear, in livermore all fireworks, including safe and sane ones, are illegal. 6:49 for you right now. as we take a live look out in san francisco, the sun is trying to peek through. meteorologist, kari hall, has been tracking those conditions for us across the bay area this morning. this morning has shaped up to be a nice one. >> yeah, we are not talking about a big spike in temperatures where it's going to be dangerous. >> just easing -- >> yeah, warming up, finally. we kicked off summer unofficially with memorial day weekend, and june 1st, we call this the first day of meteorological summer. a clear sky over walnut creek. we will go up a couple degrees for today compared to the last few days. we are looking at a high of 75

degrees. once again, still pretty nice. a lot of parts of the bay area can leave the air-conditioning off again today. oakland, 71 degrees. 66 in san francisco. 75 for novato and napa. fairfield heading up to 82 degrees. we will bring it up another couple degrees for tomorrow, and then the same on saturday as well. what we are seeing here is a slight warming trend. it will feel like it should for this time of year. as we go into the next several days, if you will be traveling, there's still daily thunderstorms developing over the sierra. some of the upper elevations, take a look at all the lightning strikes we had yesterday afternoon with all the thunderstorms moving in. there could be a trend for that to push off to the east and we will watch that. tropical activity for the gulf of mexico, that could be moving over towards florida as we start off this first day of hurricane season. here's a look at all the names.

6:56 this morning. we are starting with the young girl shot in oakland. >> let's check in with today in the bay's bob redell who has been following that this morning. what do we know? >> reporter: we just heard from oakland police, and they didn't give us too many more details but did confirm the girl will be okay. she was taken to the hospital and in stable condition. last night a 4-year-old girl was shot in the leg and she was rushed to the hospital, as i mentioned. firefighters tell us the shooting appears to have been accidental, though we don't know what led up to the shooting or if anybody will be charged in the shooting. this happened on 68th avenue near mills college. we did reach out to opd for more details and they just got back with us, and unfortunately we
