look good. a little slowing for san jose. back to you. new overnight for you, one person is dead, this is after a police chase ended in a crash in brentwood. this happened yesterday evening around 7:00. investigators say that an officer made a normal traffic stop along sand creek road and the officer noted that the driver, who was pulled over, showed some signs of being under the influence. in the middle of that stop, the driver took off, leading police on a brief chase. the driver then went off the road before crashing. the person died on the scene. no one else was involved in that crash. the investigation is still under way. it is 6:03. san jose police are answer questions later about the suspect in the deadly crime spree spanning two cities. as of now investigators are saying the same suspect was involved in crimes in at least three locations and we know investigators are looking to see if several other violent crimes are now related. san jose police were first called to kooser road and

dellwood way where a person was stabbed and carjacked. police then responded to a second stabbing and another attempted carjacking about three miles away 20 minutes later in the 1800 block of hillsdale avenue. officers spotted the suspect near 16th street and santa clara street in san jose. investigators say he intentionally drove into two people, killing them both, before taking off again. police issued a statewide warning, and around 4:30 milpitas police responded to another stabbing, this was near the 400 block of jacklin road. that victim did not survive. that's, however, when the crime spree finally came to an end, as milpitas police arrested him in a nearby neighborhood. kris sanchez is in the newsroom digging into this story. she'll bring us an update at 6:30. mayor matt mahan posted, i am

sickened by the senseless violence that took place in our city tonight. there are no words that can convey how sorry i am a the victims' loved ones. he thanked police for their quick work to make an arrest and said more details would come in the days ahead. we want to take you to washington this morning on capitol hill where we have a live look for you. this is where this morning that bill to avoid a government default cleared its hurdle. >> that's right, senators passed the measure last night. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is live in washington this morning. the president is expected to sign this bill before monday's debt ceiling default deadline. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura, marcus. the president's signature on the bill will put the concerns about a possible first-ever default to rest, but once it's signed into law, the bill will cap spending for the next two years.
6:06 am
>> the bill is passed. >> reporter: economic catastrophe averted. >> we've saved the country from the scourge of default. >> reporter: in a 63-36 vote, senators passed the bipartisan agreement to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for spending cuts. in a statement, president biden called the move a big win for our economy and the american people. a sentiment echoed throughout his administration. >> it builds on another step that the president secured last year when he passed the inflation reduction act. >> reporter: senate minority leader mitch mcconnell praised the bill as an important step toward fiscal sanity. the measure also comes with criticism. senators introduced 11 amendments, all shot down, including senator tim kaine's attempt to block efforts to speed up completion of a controversial gas pipeline. >> virginia's don't want to have

june. so the northern sierra is still at 270% of normal and the southern sierra 389% of what's normal. >> we could still get some more snow this week. >> it's possible we could get a little more snow in the upper elevations. but take a look at how much of the water content has gown down. that means snowmelt. we usually see the snowmelt happen over the course of about eight weeks, but not only did it start later, but we are expecting it to last longer. so we started may with a water content at about 49 to 50 inches of water equivalent in the snow. we're still down to the 20%, 25% range, so there's still a lot of moisture left in the sierra snowpack that still remains up there in the upper elevations. not only that, but we've also had daily thunderstorms developing, and as cooler temperatures come in next week, it's possible that we could see just a little bit of some

good friday morning. the time is 6:43, and it's friday. time to get to work in oakland. temperatures in the mid-50s and it is mostly cloudy for now. we'll see it clearing out as we go into today, and it's going to be another nice one. some of our inland valleys heating up. we'll take a look at our microclimates in just a few minutes. still tracking details for the tri-valley. i will tell you the impact for southbound 680 just shy of the sunol exit. there's a crash near the center divide. it's building and we're looking at the dublin interchange. we'll show you the ripple as it happens. new developments this morning, police have found the suspect they say is responsible for a shooting back in february that started because of a disagreement on the road. now, he was arrested after officers searched his gilroy
6:45 am
home. police say they have been searching for that suspect after that february shooting also in gilroy. investigators say this started when he was involved in a minor crash with another driver back in february. he did not stop to exchange insurance information. that's when police say the other driver followed him and that's when police say he started shooting. none of these bullets actually hit the driver, just their vehicle. yesterday police found several so-called ghost guns and a lot of ammunition there as they searched the home. it is quickly approaching a quarter until 7:00. the senate last night voted to raise the debt ceiling, much to the relief of almost everyone. >> scott mcgrew, we came very close to that default. >> we're not quite done yet. the treasury is still right now doing all kinds of crazy accounting, trying to make sure we pay our bills on time. even this morning, something about counting chickens. but, yeah, both houses have voted to raise the debt ceiling. the senate voting 63-36, raised
6:46 am
the debt ceiling for two years, agreeing with the house, taking the issue out of the presidential campaign cycle. cutting some spending, expanding work requirements for food stamps. remember, this was a bipartisan deal, a compromise. though senate majority leader chuck schumer still spiked the ball. >> so many of the destructive provisions in the republican bill are gone because we persisted and we kept insisting that default is off the table. we will not be defaulting and we will not be passing the hard right's extreme agenda. virtually no part of it. >> now, the president will speak at 4:00 this afternoon about the deal. nbc bay area will carry that live. watch for him to talk about getting along, working together. we're all americans here. remember, during his inauguration he said, we can join forces, stop the shouting and lower the temperature. there were some democrats who
6:47 am
were disappointed mr. biden would negotiate america's credit and some republicans who are disappointed house speaker mccarthy didn't hold out for more. but that is how washington gets things done, or at least they used to. perhaps compromise is back. now, in some of that fine print of the debt deal, congress has now prohibited president biden from extending the pause on student loan repayments put into place by president trump. the pause ends, this time it really ends this fall. separately, the senate also passed a bill that would prohibit president biden's idea of forgiving student loans altogether. the house already passed the same prohibition, but president biden can and will veto this whole idea. so student loan forgiveness still on the table for now, though it's stuck in the supreme court. and another win for everybody, 339,000 jobs were added to the american economy in may. much, much more than economists
6:48 am
were expecting. unemployment ticks up, but still near 1960s lows. >> pretty amazing, the numbers that came out. a new bill is making its way through the state legislature that could grant an exemption to the current state law that requires motorcyclists wear helmets while riding. if senate bill 847 passed, it would grant people who wear turbines for religious beliefs to have an option to not wear a helmet while riding the bike. current state law requires drivers and passengers to wear a helmet while on any motorized bike. on wednesday state senators took a vote and the bill passed with a 21-8 margin. eight democrats dis enlted. trending this morning, today is national donut day. can you smell them? >> i mean, yes. i don't see them. >> he's dreaming. >> we all can dream. you all get up so early in the

6:52 am
as we focus on the weekend, napa is going to see temperatures from mid-70s to low 80s and we'll see temperatures dipping next week as rain chances come back up. mike, you were watching that crash in the tri-valley. >> this crash. it's going to take a while to clear this. even though lanes are clear, there's activity in the center divide area. there's one coupe and one pickup truck. reports of major injuries and clearly a lot of damage and debris. this is a big spectator issue right now. as crews arrive, as we look at the map, this will cause additional slowing. the buildup south from bernal, so that's a sizable drive, a backup for 680 southbound. some folks are shifting to 84 through city streets or hearing about it on the radio and on tv and that's adding to 84's traffic as well. that's the only slow spot in the tri-valley. just in time for june, the iconic san francisco pride flag in the castro district of san

dellwood way where a person was stabbed and then carjacked. police then responded to a second stabbing and another attempted carjacking about three miles away and 20 minutes later on hillsdale avenue. investigators later tracked the suspect to 16th street and santa clara street, but investigators say that is when the suspect intentionally drove into two people, killing them. the suspect then stabbed someone else near jacklin road before being arrested in a milpitas neighborhood. one person is dead after a police chase ended with a crash in brentwood. this happened yesterday evening around 7:00. officers made a normal traffic stop along sand creek road and the officer noticed the driver showed signs of being under the influence. in the middle of that stop, the driver then took off, leading police on a brief chase. the driver went off the road before crashing. the person died at the scene. no one else was injured.
