a deadly crash in india. investigators are trying to figure out exactly what went wrong there. some awful pictures we're seeing this morning nbc's megan fitzgerald is monitoring developments from london good morning >> reporter: guys, good morning to you we know that indian prime minister to modi just arrived on scene to examine, take a look at the damage of what's being called the worst, the most horrific train crash india has seen in more than two decades. this death toll continues to rise it's closing in right now on 300 with some 1,000 people injured overnight we know that rescue crews were on scene continuing their procedure to try and see if they could take and find the hundreds of people that are trapped beneath the rubble and inside those train cars. according to the railway minister, at least ten train cars derailed initially, causing debris to fall onto a nearby track. a second passenger train traveling in the opposite direction collided with that

debris, causing several of its carriages to ss to derail. there are conflicting reports about third train involved, but that information has not been confirmed. the indian army, first responders, and more than 100 doctors rushed to the scene. keep in mind, train travel is the dominant form of travel in india where more than 12 million people ride14,000 trains acros the country every single kday, and there are hundreds of accidents each year. officials in india are promising they will continue a thorough investigation of what happened to understand how this happened and to learn how this can be avoided in the future. guys, back to you. >> meagan, thank you very much president biden is signing that bill to suspend the debt ceiling today, a day after he gave his first oval office address to the nation. the president saying it is proof democrats and republicans can work together. nbc is at the white house.

markets soaring even though unemployment did tick up slightly questions remain over what the federal reserve could do at its next meeting in a couple weeks with a possible pause and then raising participates later in the summer >> you have an update on the department of justice's investigation into those classified documents found at the home of former vice president mike pence what's the latest on that? >> reporter: that's right. the former vice president will not face any charges over his handling of the classified material found in his indiana home earlier this year the department of justice is effectively closing the investigation, which did include an interview with mr. pence, notifying his attorneys of the decision in a letter on thursday the timing comes as relief to the pence team as he plans to announce a run for the white house next week, joining an increasingly crowded field two other declared candidates, a current and former president, are also under scrutiny for

their treatment of classified information with very different circumstances since both mr. pence and president biden turned over documents when they were discovered, while some classified material in trump's position could still be missing. a special counsel overseeing the mar-a-lago case has a recording of the republican front-runner talking about a classified document related to iran that he consumer sentiment, and that's from 2021. "the new york times" reporting federal prosecutors have now subpoenaed his lawyers for that record, but so far it hasn't been located, which means it could have been lost, mr. trump was incorrectly describing it on the tape perhaps, or it simply never existed. all of this are indications a decision point could soon be released on whether charges could be filed against the former president as a separate special counsel continues to exam mr. biden's classified material found at his office and residence. >> monica, thank you so much documents. peter and vicky.

heat fan. congratulations on the heat. >> it wasn't a good start. i haven't lost faith yet. we will watch that series over the coming days. the heat, guys, i have to tell you, george mentioned, was blistering. the great lakes, into the northeast and all of these records that were set. these were yesterday's high temperatures that broke records. 89 in sioux st. marie. scranton hit 995. baltimore coming in at 97. d.c. and philly with the warmest day of the year. as george mentioned, a break close to the coast. the northeast will see milder conditions and below normal conditions with 10 to 15 degree temperature swing compared to the high yesterday. today in new york, 68. boston in the mid-50s.

good morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, june 3rd. i'm kira klapper. we begin with breaking news this morning. a magnitude 4.3 earthquake shook parts of the bay area just after 5:00 this morning. it was centered in the town of

cobb. that's about 25 miles north of calistoga. our seismograph picked up the shaking you see there. so far, no reports of damage. people in nearby sonoma county and as far south as san francisco say they felt the trembler. if you did, too, let us know on twitter @nbc bay area. there is a unique gun buyback program happening in oakland. oakland police are teaming up with community leaders to hold the city's second guns to gardens gun buyback. anyone can surrender their firearms, no questions asked, and receive a gift card in return. the surrendered guns will be remade into gardening tools. the first 50 people to turn in their weapons also will receive one of those tools. the city says the goal is to curb violence by getting guns off the street. it'll be held at thy word ministries on international boulevard in oakland a week from today, saturday, june 11th.

the sherpa wrapped him in a climbing mat and carried him six hours before another guide joined to help. a rescue helicopter arrived and the climber was flown back to malaysia to recover. >> sherpas are amazing. they do this on the daily. incredible. also this morning, a major move in sports. churchill downs, the home of the kentucky derby, is putting a halt on racing while it investigates the deaths of a dozen horses. jesse kirsch is following this for us. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: vicky, good morning. it doesn't look like it was triggered by new revelations, but the lack of answers to have churchill downs move to another track. in the last several weeks, 12 horses died after suffering injuries at the famed track churchill downs. the track says neither an internal review nor outside

investigations have found a pattern linking all of the deaths. the horse racing integrity and safety authority says the track surface expert conducted a review and found no red flags. suspending races will allow them time to see what happened in the tragedies and try to prevent them in the future. the ceo of churchill downs says what has had is upsetting and unacceptable. horse racing across the country has faced scrutiny over safety. this is widely seen as an unusual number of deaths in such a short time. and just days before the final leg of the triple crown, all of this is unfolding. this is after horse deaths at the kentucky derby and the preakness stakes on the race days, but not the races, but at the tracks. churchill downs is suspending racing after tomorrow's event.
