7:04 am

now to a followup to a story we brought to you as breaking news yesterday morning. a teenager is in critical condition following yesterday's fiery crash in danville. we now know what led to that crash. the sheriff's office says it started just after 1:00 a.m., when a danville police officer tried to pull over a car for running a red light. the driver did not stop and led the officer on a chase for about five miles. police say the driver ran another red light, hit another car, and then flipped over and caught fire right in front of that starbucks inside the crossing shopping center. five people inside that car were rescued by police and taken to the hospital. the driver suffered serious injuries, deputies say the rest for uninjured. a year and a half after her disappearance, the family of alexis gabs say they're finally getting closure.
7:08 am
a sense of closure for her family. her father posted yesterday on facebook that alexis gabe will finally be coming home. her autopsy and forensic test on her body have been completed and a public memorial service has been set for saturday, june 17th. the 23-year-old vanished in january of 2022 after leaving her home to visit her ex-boyfriend in antioch. one year later, gabe's partial remains were found during a volunteer search. investigators say marshal curtis jones, her ex-boyfriend, killed her. jones was shot and killed when officers tried to arrest him near seattle. gabe's remains will be created and laid to rest in a private ceremony. turning now to joe biden, who yesterday signed into law a bill extending the debt ceiling for two years.
7:09 am
treasury secretary janet yellen washed that the government could go into default june 5. the fiscal responsibility act of 2023 will suspend the public debt limit through january 21, 2025, after the 2024 presidential elections. that means the u.s. can borrow what it needs to pay off its debts. when the suspension ends in 2025, the debt ceiling will automatically be raised to the amount of how much was borrowed. as pride month gets underway, a big boost is coming to provide mental health support for lbgtq youth. secretary of health and human services announced the funding in the los angeles county city of long beach. >> reporter: the city announced millions in asset for lbgtq youth after a roundtable

joe biden yesterday signed a bill to avert government default as soon as tomorrow. as he takes his victory lap, many are questioning whether both sides really got what they wanted out of it. joining me now is nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd with a preview of today's show. thanks for joining us. one of your guests, senator joe manchin, was able to get what he wanted. so did both sides really get what they want, and do the american people win in the end? >> look, i think this is a bunch of symbolic victories. this is not a very substantive bill. for what the goal republicans had and all of that, but this truly is what politics is about sometimes. the art of the possible. what was possible? republicans could freeze spending levels. they weren't going to be able to get democrats to control the white house. but they had enough leverage.
7:14 am
and they had enough leverage to, you know, do some things on the margins. but symbolically, this was an important moment for joe biden and speaker mccarthy. kevin mccarthy needed to prove he can run this house, that he can govern. there had been questions about it. took him forever to get that speakership. look, he made the white house have to come to the table and have a deal. the white house was convinced mccarthy couldn't do it. they were betting that the fractures would make it where they could jam a debt ceiling increase without having to deal with this. and so mccarthy, i think, proved his political mettle. and biden, friday night, he wants to take credit for being a bipartisan leader. and in many ways, his path to re-election is making the case that at the end of the day, he was the one willing to go across the aisle and work with republicans, that he does try to turn down the temperature. and when you look at the list of bipartisan accomplishments, they're starting to stack up. whether it's the chips and
7:15 am
science bill, the infrastructure bill, protecting same-sex marriage, and now this. so he has this -- i think long-term, perhaps biden will benefit more than the republicans here. but it truly is a win for both men. that's good to hear. and yes, biden definitely has a good track of those bipartisan congress deals. chuck, that's all the time we have this morning, unfortunately. thanks so much. we look forward to your show today. and join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." he'll have exclusive interviews with former attorney on president trump's team who just resigned amid differences in the fight against some ideas within the attorney's circle. more on that after this news cast. coming up in about 30 minutes, we'll talk to larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at the student loan forgiveness program, and
7:16 am
whether it could soon be deemed unconstitutional. in tennessee, there were celebrations in the streets of memphis yesterday as the city begins pride month on the heels of a major lbgtq victory in the courts. a u.s. district judge deemed the state adult entertainment act which criminalizes drag performances. the act was the first of its kind to be signed into law as drag performers nationwide have become the target of conservative activists. the trump appointed judge wrote "laws infringing on the freedom of speech must be narrow and well defined. the aea is neither." tennessee's attorney general says he looks forward to appealing that decision. a life-change ride begins today for thousands of people. today is the first day of the annual aids life cycle ride.

bicyclists begin the journey from san francisco to los angeles this morning. the event raises money for the san francisco aids foundation, and the l.a. gay and lesbian center for hiv and aids related services. next saturday, cyclists are expected to arrive in los angeles after pedaling 545 miles. the rides started this morning at the cal palace. if you are looking to get out and do something today, we have you covered in this weekend calendar. >> ciao, kira. today in san francisco's north beach, this is the first-ever second day of the festa italiana to commemorate the signing of the first-ever italian constitution. you know what? you can hang back and enjoy the food and drink while the racers run the course along the embarcadero, which is italian for "pier," where the ships

helped, as well? as far as joe biden goes, he's promised to veto this legislation. okay, that's one thing. congress, of course, doesn't have the 2/3 supermajority necessary to overturn the veto. but then again, the supreme court may overturn that biden plan on the basis that he did not have authority to create it. a lot at stake. >> vetoing, overturn and then overturning a veto. so what kind of fallout might we expect? what do you think will happen? >> that's the great unknown. we don't know. here is what to hook for. remember, 40 million students, one out of six adults in this country, that's a massive amount. so will students blame republicans because the republicans cut out this money and maybe the supreme court as well, which is conservative? we know that. and thereby vote democratic. or will students say, you know what? someone is finally responsible and we're grateful for the republicans for the belt
