clouds over the south bay and we are going to continue to see those rain chances going up as we go into this evening. it's also going to be definitely cooler than we've seen recently with those thunderstorms and even gusty winds and hail possible as we go into this evening. the pattern stays active through at least tomorrow evening as we track a system that's going to be coming in. we've seen a lot of lightning over the upper elevations. we'll have our chance as well, but it comes along with rain. i'll have more in a few minutes. mike, you have a major crash already in san jose. >> we got this notification from san jose police department and this is not on a freeway, but it is in san jose and it is a major roadway. meridian is currently closed around woodruff at the scene of a deadly crash. they have to take care of the car fire that happened after. you can stay clear of that on redman or coleman. those are the major streets. we'll track that. the rest of the freeways are

moving smoothly. back thank you. today marks one agonizing year for a family in san jose after a safeway worker was shot and killed while on the job. family, friends, even co-workers are going to honor his life by demanding answers this morning. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez joins us live with more on what they want to see. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. they want answers about safety. they say they want people to feel safe at work, they want people to feel safe when they're shopping for food for their families. in the year, they say they haven't scene enough change. friends and family will gather at the store in his memory in just about an hour. yesterday they also gathered at a nearby park. he was just 24 years old when he was shot and killed when he confronted an 18-year-old man

who was allegedly stealing alcohol from the store. here is his mother. [ speaking non-english ] >> reporter: she told us in the year that her son was ripped from his family, she still cannot contain her grief. she takes small comfort in the fact that police did make an arrest in her son's killing, he'll be tried for the murder. his next court date is july 28th. his mother's wish is for an end to the violence. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot of pain for that family. thank you. the search is still on for a driver involved in a street racing hit-and-run crash. it happened at the jewish deli on 17th and franklin in oakland yesterday. this is video from the scene from citizen app. officers say two cars were racing in that area before the

crash. one lost control, grazed a fire hydrant and slammed into the building. the driver ran away from officers arrived. no word on any other injuries. we are following breaking news out of ukraine, where moscow officials say ukraine is launching a significant defense attack against russian forces. russia says the attack started late last night at five areas in eastern ukraine. it's not clear if this marks the beginning of a major counteroffensive that kyiv has been preparing to reclaim occupied land. kyiv is not confirming or denying the claim. turning to decision 2024, in a busy week ahead, the list of candidates running for president is expected to expand. both former vice president mike pence and former new jersey governor chris christie are set to formally announce they're going to be running this week. brie jackson is live in washington watching all of this for us. it's early there in the campaign run, but certainly things are

picking up. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, marcus. the republican primary field continues to grow, just over seven months until the first contest. and over the weekend many of the republican presidential hopefuls were in iowa on saturday for the roast and ride. it's an event hosted by senator joni ernst and a way for candidates to get in front of voters in the battleground state. the 2024 presidential race taking shape. during a cnn town hall, former ambassador nikki haley making her pitch to voters. >> americans are tired. they want to see a government work for them again. they want to see results happen. >> reporter: haley was among republican candidates campaigning in iowa over the weekend. >> i was raised by a single mother in poverty. my mom worked 16-hour days to keep food on the table and the lights on. >> i think american decline is a

choice and i'm running for president because i think if we choose another path, we can restore american greatness. >> this is the first occasion, really, to talk about my background, experience, vision for america. >> reporter: a notable no-show, current republican frontrunner former president trump. mike pence is expected to announce his candidacy this week. a growing list of republicans looking to take over president biden's job. >> they are hungry for a change and all of these candidates presented an exceptional pathway to the white house in 2024. >> reporter: president biden making the case that there's still more work for his administration to do in a second term, and touting successes, including the bipartisan budget

agreements he signed over the weekend to prevent a first-ever government default. and the first republican primary debate is now scheduled for august 23rd in milwaukee, wisconsin. so a lot to keep an eye on there as these candidates continue to go head to head. >> it certainly will be a busy, and i'm sure very active campaign season. thank you. it's going to be an active day when it comes to apple. their worldwide developers conference gets under way this morning in san francisco. scott mcgrew is covering it all. the big talk is the vr headset. >> the first product from apple, new product since the apple watch. it may be some prime before it's available in stores, and frankly, it may be some prime -- prime before you want one. this is one made by oculus. nobody really wanted that one, either. one of the big problems apple will need to solve is finding some reason for people to wear

these headsets. a killer app, you buy the hardware specifically so you can use the game or the app, which is why they're showing it off to developers. because developers are the people that make the games and apps and apple is saying here is this amazing piece of hardware, please tell us what it is you can do with it. >> so you have to have something to go hand in hand. and i understand it's going to be very expensive. >> yeah, like $3,000. think there are two big assumptions, one, that prices will come down eventually, and that apple will be able to do something more interesting than meta or microsoft has done where you try it on and you think to yourself, this is something i actually would want. one thing we will see right away is new ios for iphone and ipad. features will be free. watch for some demonstrations. there may not be any more episodes of "ted lasso," unfortunately, but the writers

good monday morning. let's get you ready for the morning commute in the tri-valley. we're checking out danville starting out in the low 50s. it's a cloudy morning and we'll see a lot of clouds throughout the day as our temperatures will be significantly cooler than yesterday and we're also watching out for, yes, rain chances. more on the timeline and where we may see the most of it coming up. we're looking at 280 through san jose. the volume just picking up a tad bit. no slowing at the interchange,

101, 280, 17 and 880. we are looking at the closure continuing for part of meridian. a deadly crash in san jose. big issue there. you can use coleman as your alternate through that area. happy monday. markets had their best week since march last week. big rally. allstate says it's not going to issue new insurance policies to california homeowners because of fire risk. state farm did the same thing earlier this month. we talked about apple's worldwide developers conference at the top of the hour. twitter's new ceo, linda yaccarino, starts work this morning according to "business insider". elon musk has made he'll remain in charge of software and product, which is most of twitter. we're waiting to see how much power she really has. >> the bond markets will be very busy today, the first business day after president biden signed the debt ceiling into law. that allows the u.s. government

to issue more debt, raising money through the sale of securities. so there's only so much money out there, right? so the government is going to be competing with the stock market trying to attract investors. government bonds might not always pay as well as shares, but they're dependable. you know why? because the government does not default. the stock market rallied friday after we got that bigger than expected jobs number. the economy continues to grow, but there was a section of data we're worried about. >> the unemployment report, interestingly, tracks employment by race, and we saw no change in unemployment with -- all groups had no change except for two, and that was blacks and hispanics. they had a rise in unemployment. >> so black employment has been the highest it's been in history, as one bit of context, but black and hispanic we have seen some down slightly.

that's bad news. the other bit of good news, historically it was very different, and it's come together much more because people are people, workers are workers, and we're starting to see that more, that it's tracking together. so we'll continue to watch this. but it is a little bit of weakness in the report. >> interesting. >> thanks, scott. did you go to the movies this weekend? little mermaid" and "the boogeyman" earning about $12 million. >> i need to see that. that sounds like something i want to see. >> totally. trending this morning, is it rude to wear your headphones at work? >> i say no, but take a listen to this. there's a new debate that some people are asking, does wearing headphones at work improve concentration or just allow people to be antisocial? >> don't talk to me. >> people used to wear headphones to help them stay focused but when they returned to the office the practice is getting pushback. one adviser on etiquette says it is not a good idea to wear headphones in the office. they say it could actually cause some issues with some people, especially in places where they exchange ideas out loud. and the adviser also says that those who actually leave those air pods in their ear during conversations, that could look like you're half committed at work. this is a 250-year-old british

oh, wait. it's a daily thing. >> you take it out, though. >> kari and i don't talk to each other. >> we are together more often than with our mates, right? >> yeah. >> we really are. >> so we'll just sit like this and you take it away. don't put your headphones on yet. let's talk about the forecast. there's a lot of changes on the way. this is not going to be your typical early june weather. we're going to have a big cooldown today, so you need to change how you dressed compared to over the weekend. we're talking about temperatures in oakland in the upper 60s. it's still going to be cool in san francisco, but the biggest difference will be felt for the inland areas that have had temperatures in the 80s and 90s the past few days. we're headed for 75 in san jose today and upper 70s for mountain view, a high of 78 degrees in livermore. then tomorrow we're seeing even cooler temperatures as the system comes in.

it's going to bring a major change in our rain chances as well. so what we're seeing happening here is we've had a lot of showers and thunderstorms developing over the sierra. some of that moisture is coming this way, meeting up with an area of low pressure that's going to help funnel in more energy and may bring in additional rainfall. not usual that we see thunderstorms and a lot of rain, and that's what we could see as we go into this evening, coming through the central valley and nudging its way into the north bay, as well as the tri-valley and south bay by 9:00 to 10:00 tonight. we could see waves of rain coming through overnight, hit-or-miss showers that will continue throughout the day tomorrow, off and on, even into tomorrow evening. so once again, very unusual pattern that we're seeing here that in some spots could bring a tenth to a quarter inch of rainfall. that is significant for this prime of year, and we're also going to have a big dip in temperatures. take a look at santa rosa, parts

of the north bay staying in the 60s throughout much of the rest of the week into the weekend. mostly 70s for some of our warmest spots inland. mike, you've been tracking a crash. what's the update? >> a crash or disabled vehicle. i'm not clear what's going on. we have slowing westbound just past treasure island. the disabled vehicle is reported eastbound. we see the slowing in the westbound upper deck area. so we're going to track those reports. it's still early and no metering lights are on just yet. we see a light build for highway 37, we are looking at a closure at meridian because of a deadly crash at redman. >> everything old is new again as one bay area rock station is making big changes. coming up next, the station taking its current ai model o pause.ff

flying migrants to sacramento. the action he and governor governor gavin newsom are demanding. the steps you should take now to prepare for wildfire season and the season outlook. >> we're getting ready for some very unusual june rain, possibly some thunderstorms. i'll be tracking it in the microclimate forecast. this is "today in the bay." and good morning to you on this monday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at that forecast, meteorologist kari hall starting out our workweek. >> we're starting out and seeing some of the rain that's been over the sierra, some of that moisture is starting to make its way closer to the bay area as we go into late this evening. we're going to be seeing this system also meeting up with an area of low pressure that's moving its way up the coast and that's going to be joining with those showers and thunderstorms and increasing our chance that

were flown and left in sacramento late last week. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us now. the state of california investigating what role florida might have had in this. >> reporter: correct, laura and marcus. florida governor ron desantis has jumped migrants before, that was in martha's vineyard. california governor gavin newsom and attorney general rob bonta believe the sunshine state was behind the flight. >> it sounds like we're having trouble with bob's audio. we'll try to get that ironed out. he was mentioning rob bonta is looking into the investigation of whether florida dumped these migrants in california. we'll try to get that ironed out in just a little bit. moving on this morning,

turning now to a follow-up on a police chief that ended with a fiery crash near a starbucks and sent five people to the hospital. it happened about 1:00 on saturday morning when police tried to pull over the driver who ran a red light. the car didn't stop, so a police chase started. about five miles later at the intersection of camino tassajara is car ran a second red light and hit another car. it rolled over and caught fire. five people inside were rushed to the hospital. witnesses say they saw the whole thing unfold. >> i hope that everybody was okay. at the end of the day, that's all you can really hope for. >> all five people taken to the hospital. the driver of the car suffered serious injuries. new details for you this morning. police have arrested a woman they say is responsible for hitting and killing a man. this happened in vallejo on saturday afternoon near donna

court and echo summit road. this is about three miles from six flags discovery kingdom. that man who was hit was taken to the hospital, later dying there. after interviewing witnesses, police arrested this woman at the scene of the homicide, however police have not yet revealed a motive. well, a big announcement could come today in oakland when it comes to the a's quest to move to las vegas. it is the last day nevada lawmakers are in session before they adjourn. now, there is still a key decision to make, whether state officials are willing to fund that move. last month the a's agreed in principle to a deal with the state, which would allocate about $380 million in public funding to help build the new ballpark. however, that still has to be voted on by lawmakers as part of the state's budget. the a's lease on the coliseum expires at the end of next year

and one week from tomorrow a's fans are set to host the reverse boycott to urge the owner to sell the team. it's 5:35 right now. today marks the official start of fire season in santa rosa. it means the city's weed abatement ordinance will take effect. it's already getting so dry out there. >> reporter: that's right. we're seeing brush fires pop up in other places in the bay area and it is a clear reminder why weed abatement and other fire prevention measures are important. take a look at this prime lapse video of a brush fire which broke out yesterday afternoon in concord. it happened on kirker pass road. firefighters worked quickly to stop it. the flames burned about seven acres before it was contained. weed abatement and other vegetation management are part of the defensible face initiative in contra costa county. a weed abatement ordinance in santa rosa officially goes into

effect today. that means property owners will need to cut down grass and weeds to 4 inches of height and maintain that throughout the fire season. the new rule applies to properties located in wildland urban areas, as well as developed parcels over half an acre, having half an acre of undeveloped land. it also includes vacant lots. those who don't comply may be fined. you can report violations to the santa rosa fire department. they'll be taking care of that throughout the fire season. also, fire inspection safety measures start today. this is also a really good prime for people to start making an exit plan because that is something that was a problem during the kinkaid fire, and as well as the glass fire. so if you haven't done so already, go ahead and take some prime to do that. >> old school.

people might not be used to that these days. >> it's important to figure out a plan. we've been talking about the arrival of the potential thunderstorms and usually in june we have the possibility, we don't see as much moisture. so this is going to be another strange one where we kind of see what's going to happen here. but a very active weather pattern as we could see some showers coming in, which could help increase that moisture and already we have a very low threat of this causing a lot of fires because of the very heavy rainfall we saw throughout the winter. and we will have that possibility of isolated thunderstorms as well as some gusty winds and hail. so we're seeing that moisture coming in. there's been a lot of lightning over the sierra. we're going to see a disturbance coming up the coast that could bring some of that into the bay area as we go into evening. by 6:00, possibly pain coming in. hit-or-miss showers that will stay with us as we go into

tomorrow morning and into the afternoon we could see waves of rain. not our usual june weather. i'll be tracking that. mike, you're hearing about a roadside fire. >> we're looking at san jose, this is a critical area, a roadside fire reported 880 around 101 where we typically see slowing. the report to chp says the person says the brush on the side of the road that creeps over, it's now impeding upon the slow lane as you're coming up northbound 101. we're going to track that and of course we'll track whether or not it spreads to any of the surrounding structures. so far, just a small brush fire. the bay bridge, the slowing did start to clear up a bit, it was indeed the westbound direction as we saw from the sensors. back to you. 5:39 right now. your future trip to the grocery store could look a little

good monday morning. let's take a live look outside in san rafael. here we have our usual start to the morning, low 50s, some clouds, but some very unusual weather is headed our way. we're going to talk about that, what you need to do to prepare coming up in a few minutes. as that disabled vehicle cleared, we do have metering lights now activated. the backup is quickly forming on the oakland side. they'll probably speed up the frequency of cars getting through. that should ease or at least hold off some of the major backup. right now we're looking at the morning build out of oakland. we are learning more about stressful moments for fighter jet pilots as they scrambled yesterday after a small plane flew off course over washington, d.c. before crashing in southwest virginia. the search for the four people onboard has been suspended.

you could hear that there. the sonic boom from those jets rattled many neighborhoods there. the national guard says the jet tried to make contact with the plane, but the pilot was passed out. the cause of the accident remains under investigation. investigators who examined the plane crash with the incapacitated pilot zeroed in on the cabin depressurization and they say the problem would require an immediate reaction from the pilot to stay conscious. even then it's possible further mechanical failures could have played a role. >> you don't have too much time in a rapid depressurization situation to get on oxygen, because if you're high at altitude and you lose pressurization, all of the oxygen molecules in your body escape immediately. it isn't like holding your

dakota governor doug bergam. he can afford to get his message out on his own without depending on donors. now, one way of interpreting this news is there are three brand new candidates and none of them are afraid of florida governor ron desantis, who announced his candidacy in a botched twitter announcement may 25th. their biggest competitor, of course, is trump, and there's news about him as well. the grand jury investigating his possession of classified documents is reportedly meeting again this week. nikki haley also a candidate for president, did a cnn town hall over the wen. this one went smoothly. haley tried to differentiate herself from other candidates, particularly on ukraine, which she supports. desantis has dismissed ukraine as a regional conflict and trump has often hinted he would side with the russians. >> what we need to understand is that ukraine has the ability to

petition last week requesting a hearing with new judges. back in 2019, berkeley passed its first in the nation gas ban ordinance, before a court of appeals voted to safeguard natural gas kitchen appliances. we are learning details about state bills that could make your grocery trips look different. the first one banned food products containing five chemicals linked to cancer and other health risks. skittles contains one of those chemicals. the second bill would require businesses with annual revenues of more than $25 million to offer customers the option of receiving a paper receipt, an emailed receipt or no receipt. the bills must clear the senate before heading to governor gavin newsom's desk for signature. trending, weddings tend to have a lot of food, celebration, sometimes a lot of leftover food. one mother getting a lot of heat for the way of using those leftovers. >> listen to this.

her daughter voiced her complaints on reddit. the daughter says she had her wedding eight months ago and thought there would be a lot of leftovers. before the wedding she had planned to donate leftovers to a soup kitchen. when she got to the end of the wedding, she said there were less leftovers than she thought. fast forward eight months later when her sister was getting married, the exact same food was put out on the buffet. it turns out that mom froze all of the leftovers from the first daughter's wedding eight months ago and saved them for the second daughter's wedding. both sisters started telling guests not to eat the food, but the mother says this strategy saved her a fortune. >> i would imagine. weddings are expensive. reusing the food, i don't know. >> now, i do know that you can freeze some food and it does save. i wouldn't do that for a wedding. i don't have to pay for a wedding. >> maybe have a simpler menu.

an area of low pressure. right now it just looks like clouds and we're seeing that move closer to the bay area. it's going to draw in those showers and thunderstorms into the bay area, and by this time tomorrow it could be raining. usually when we see this type of setup, we don't see as much moisture. it's mostly that dry lightning that sparks those thunderstorms. but this time it looks like there could be rain and thunderstorms in the mix. so here we are at 6:00 this evening, we're starting to see this energy working through sacramento and heading toward the north bay. by late tonight we could see rain in parts of the south bay, off and on showers in the north bay. but this also continues into tomorrow morning with waves of rain coming in. now, all of us seeing the same intensity or the rainfall, but we could see it on and off tomorrow, into the evening commute, before this starts to taper off. some of the models are putting
