sonic booms in d.c. as they tried to catch up with that plane. scrambled from joint base andrews near washington sunday two f-16 fighter jets racing to intercept a private cessna citation jet, approached restricted d.c. airspace the pilots radioed the cessna pilot but got no sense >> this is an armed air defense fighter. you have been intercepted. >> reporter: on the ground, the sonic boom from the fighter jets rattled the greater d.c. area, shaking homes from annapolis, maryland, to northern virginia the thunderous sounds so loud concerned residents called 911 but as the f-16s approached the runaway plane, they could see the pilot appeared unresponsive. the plane had taken off from tennessee, headed to long island, new york then did an unexplained 180,

turning south again, as air traffic controllers tried unsuccessfully to raise the pilo and told other planes to stay away that's when the fighter jets were scrambled >> if they were intercepting an aircraft that was doing 70 or 80% of the speed of sound and needed to intercept that aircraft quickly, the only way to do it would be to go ahead and go supersonic, to occlude the enclosure rate on the aircraft >> reporter: the fighter pilots tried to use flares to get the pilot's attention. and continued to follow the cessna over d.c. to virginia where it apparently ran out of cras fuel and crashed our nbc statio wrc captured these images of the crash scene west of charlottesville. it was registered to a company in melbourne, florida. the owner tells nbc news, his daughter, grandchild, a nanny and pilot were on board. similar to the 1999 private

plane crash that killed golf legend payne stewart and five others. they become unresponsive after their plane lost oxygen pressure in a similar situation, a pilot would have just seconds to act >> you got to be on oxygen within five seconds or you'll begin to lose consciousness. >> reporter: to be clear, we do not know what incapacitated the pilot. was it a medical emergency or loss of oxygen pressure in the cabin? norad says it did not shoot down this plane, so now the ntsb and faa are investigating. savannah >> we did see that fighter jets intercepted the plane. what exactly does that mean? >> reporter: it means that essentially it's a warning, trying to escort a plane out of restricted airspace. but the actual protocols for potentially shooting down a plane, those are classified, we're not privy to those however, we are told because of the altitude of this plane, 34,000 feet, it overflew d.c., yes, it was restricted airspace

and what made you decide to write this story >> it started with my best friend sent me a news release that an author had been given th rights to the story, to tell of these kids and i, you know, as a mom, you're like, why would somebody write a story about people that they don't know, right about my kid yeah i'm the one who's raised him, jim and i. it just sparked something in me. the only thing, i kind of explained to people how the book came about i think it's like a country artist who goes through a breakup and writes their greatest hit it literally just came to me, in the middle of the night. >> it's ethan's song >> it's everything yeah, it's the best i can do for him. >> i love "the boy who wore blue " you had triplets, and you wrote in the book when the were little they each wore and

responding to air traffic control. and then didn't respond to the f-16s. when the f-16s were scrambled, that caused a sonic boom as they tried to catch up with this plane. look at the route that this plane had made it left tennessee, it was headed to long island, new york, and suddenly, strangely, did a 180 and immediately headed back southwest again. air traffic control could not reach them as that plane was approaching washington, d.c. the f-16s were scrambled they radioed the pilot, no response they got close to the cockpit and could see that he, the pilot, was unresponsive. they continued tracking that plane all the way into virginia where it apparently ran out of fuel and then crashed into the rugged terrain west of charlottesville. unfortunately, all four people on board were killed the owner of the plane says his daughter was on board, his granddaughter, a nanny, and the pilot who we are told is a veteran accomplished pilot
