trump's lawyers. how common is a meeting like that >> if you're sitting at home hearing this investigation is nearing the end, this is one of the data points. this is the type of meeting you see during the end of the investigation when defense attorneys try to go in and make their last pitch for why their client shouldn't be accused of any crimes and why this case should go away i've done those meetings before. this is very common. you see this all the time. it's what good defense attorneys get paid to do. >> what is the former president's best defense as you can see it >> his best argument is that the white house swept all the documents into a box they made their way to florida and he had nothing to do with it he never knew nothing about it that's his best defense. that's not the defense he's been making so far. the legal defense may shape up differently. we've heard from the former president i can declassify

anything i want. i can do it by just thinking about it that's undercut by the fact the documents get to mar-a-lago and he's asked repeatedly to return them and he refuses. they had to get a search warrant to return the documents. if he just said, sure, take the documents right back, we might be in a different case >> to be clear here, there are several other investigations involving the former president right now. can you bring us up to speed >> yes there's a lot swirling and they're all in different positions. we've seen the former president indicted in new york that's a state case. it's completely unrelated. now we're seeing the special counsel. this is a federal case run out of the justice department. this has to do with him retaining classified documents after he's no longer president the special counsel is also investigating his role in the january 6th insurrection and his efforts to cling to power, stay in office.

there's another investigation in georgia having to do with his efforts to cling to power, to flip the votes in georgia. that one is way off. this is the federal case in d.c. there's a lot at play here >> laura, thank you. >> laura made it clear. let's move to the search for answers after those terrifying moments in the skies over the east coast with air force fighter jets trying to chase down a run away unresponsive plane. it crashed in virginia and killed all four people on board. this morning investigators have made their way to the remote crash scene. tom costello has the latest. hey, tom. >> reporter: both the ntsb and the faa say the pilot failed to respond to air traffic controllers for most of the flight's duration. no one ever radioed a may day.

that has a lot suggesting everybody on board may have been incapacitated and dideprived of oxygen it took investigators hours to get through the forest to the remains of that plane. >> the wreckage is destroyed however, there's still several pieces that might be able to assist. >> reporter: family members tell nbc news that a prominent real estate broker was on board with her 2-year-old daughter. her father, john rumpel, who owns the plane tells the "washington post" she was a devoted mom who tried to have a child for years. he says he and his wife adopted her when she was 40 because she reminded them of her late daughter

they were headed to the hamptons with their nanny investigators must unravel the mystery. did the plane quickly lose oxygen pressure? a similar event and crash killed payne stewart and five others in 1999 the ntsb says that has to be a leading investigative theory. >> when a person is at ground level, the pressure allows them to breathe the higher you go the less pressure there is and so your lungs without that pressure you cannot breathe. >> reporter: lack of oxygen would lead to hypoxia. it may have happened soon after takeoff. just 15 minutes into flight the pilot stopped responding to air. the plane continued north all the way to long island before doing a u-turn heading back to tennessee, still failing to

respond to controllers. six fighter jets were scrambled along the east coast. as the plane approached restricted d.c. air space, two f-16s went super sonic. they could see the pilot was slumped over, but they could do nothing but watch as the plane flew south into virginia, ran out of fuel and crashed. >> tom, what could cause that? what could cause a plane to suddenly lose oxygen like that? >> reporter: they'll look into whether there was a structural problem, maybe a leak around a door or window, some problem with the pressure system. they'll have to look at the maintenance records. the theory about why the plane went to new york and did a u-turn, the idea is he preprogrammed auto pilot to go to new york and then tennessee.

when the plane got to new york, it looked for the next destination and picked out tennessee. >> wow. tom, thank you. another major story this morning, growing concern about a slowdown at west coast shipping ports, including some of the nation's largest and most critical shipping distribution centers. miguel almaguer is at the port of long beach. it's near los angeles with a closer look and the potential impact all this could have on americans from coast to coast. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. to be clear it's not a strike. it appears to be a worker slowdown. >> the men and women who work at the docks here simply haven't been showing up for work over the past few days. that will have an impact on consumers at home. the question today will they be back at work? this morning at west coast ports

where every day products arrive and are then shipped across the country there's growing concern dock workers may not show up to work again, creating a potential supply chain slowdown. some of the nation's busiest ports have sat idle. as negotiations over pay, benefits, safety and automation have dragged on for a year, the ilwu says some of its 22,000 rank and file members have become to voice their displeasure by not showing up for work at critical ports. the pma counters the disruptive work actions effectively shut down operations at some terminals. the problems here could impact you at home. >> this is sort of a slow burn that could get to a boil quickly. >> reporter: the national retail

federation urging the president to intervene. roughly 40% of our nation's imported goods arrive here at the ports of los angeles and long beach. our partners at cnbc report it could take weeks to clear the short backlog already created, saying many of the containers are back to school and holiday products. >> because of these slowdowns or dock workers not showing up, that causes delays, delays getting the goods to stores. that cost extra money. at some point those costs could be passed on to consumers. while today's port problems in no way represent the massive shipping backlog that threaten the national supply chain during covid, there's growing concern the problem here could impact your bottom line. this morning the white house and the department of labor are closely monitoring the situation here. our friends at cnbc say good progress has been made on those

attorney alleging the journalists sowed the seeds of discourse, telling the court that his mother, princess diana, was also a target, alleging her phone had also been hacked in the '90s. but legal victory in this case is far from certain for the prince. a lawyer arguing there's no evidence to support claims that harry's or diana's phones were hacked or the extent of the unlawful information gathering. many royal watchers believe harry is taking a huge gamble, opening himself up to rigorous cross-examination. but it's a risk he's willing to take on his quest of trying to change the media landscape. guys, prince harry's testimony is truly unusual, especially when you consider the mantra of the royal family, never explain, never complain. as far as the judge and the court is concerned, the judge is saying that prince harry you can

expect to testify all throughout today and into tomorrow. >> megan fitzgerald, thank you. let's get some more perspective on the case, prince harry's decision to take the stand. we welcome in daisy mcandrew, royal commentator. they talked about how it was risky because his cross-examination would be coming and he'd have to face questions. that's happening as we speak. what do you know about what's going on in the courtroom right now? >> so we know that harry and his team have selected 33 tabloid newspaper articles that were printed that they're complaining about that they're alleging were as a result of some illegal activity, hacking or illegal use of private investigators. they're going through 33 articles, taking them one by one.

the barrister, the lawyer, who is cross-examining harry, who has had to ask him to speak a little bit louder. he's known as the beast. it gives you the idea that this is going to be pretty aggressive harry is holding up pretty well. he believes the tabloid media took his mother, his mental health, his unborn baby, his family, his friends and his country. this is a mission he's not going to give up on. >> and he claims the tabloids put a real wedge between him and his brother. when you think about it, a royal has not testified since the 1800s. so do you think that william and his father, charles, might -- how will they be seeing this he kind of says he's doing it because of what the tabloids did to them. >> yeah. i think as megan was saying, there's a very different attitude between the rest of the royal family and harry harry has taken on this attitude and i think the rest of the royal family thinks this is an

argument and fight he should not have picked and may not win. it's interesting also to think about how this case would differ from an american case. his legal team here in the uk, they are not allowed to coach him. whatever you've seen with witnesses being coached, that's not allowed here he won't even be allowed to see his legal team this evening. so he really is on his own he is without the support of his family and in some ways without the support of his legal team >> i had no idea that's how this went down. when will this wrap up when will we have a conclusion >> harry's bit will wrap up, i think, tomorrow afternoon but the whole case -- because there are lots of other people who are also trying to sue the mirror newspaper. we're thinking the case could go on for a number of weeks we're going to have to wait until the whole case is wrapped up before we know if harry is going to win or lose my personal feeling is so far -- the team that are cross-examining him are making quite a good argument that
