5:02 am
region. there may be spotty light showers farther to the north. there's rain off the coast. for the bay area we are waking up to dry conditions this morning. you can see there's still an active pattern across the region and we are still seeing the storm system off the coast that's keeping the chance of showers and thunderstorms somewhere across the region. but as we go into today, it's going to eventually clear out and temperatures head for the upper 60s and mid-70s for the south bay. we'll talk more about this coming up. mike, you were looking at an overturned big rig on the san mateo bridge. >> there's slowing getting off the san mateo bridge. this is on the foster city side. you see these packages. there's distinctive packaging from amazon, the top is ripped open. you can see the boxes. they have to clear all those out and unload the truck. then they have to right the 26-foot trailer and then they can clear lanes. center and right lane are
5:03 am
currently blocked. you see the slowdown coming off of the bridge itself as you're heading over land and then toward foster city boulevard. the last ten minutes have seen more slowing as more cars from coming from the hayward side and potentially there may be more activity causing more distraction. we're watching speeds slow down. there's also some debris on the hayward side getting off the bridge. we're watching both sides of 92. >> thank you very much. this morning we are also following breaking news. pope francis back in the hospital, this comes as the 86-year-old is being placed under general anesthesia for a procedure on his abdomen. brie jackson joins us live with more on what we know. >> reporter: the vatican medical team took pope francis to the hospital in the late afternoon. the pope is currently awaiting surgery. the vatican says he will have surgery on his intestine and will be hospitalized for many days while he recovers.
5:04 am
the vatican says its medical team advises surgery after treating the pope for a hernia. the vatican released a statement that said, in part, quote, he will undergo a laparotomy and abdominal wall plastic surgery with prosthesis under general anesthesia. now, a laparotomy is a procedure to diagnose and treat abdominal issues. this comes two years after the pope had 13 inches of his colon removed because it was inflamed, and just a few months after he spent three days in the hospital for bronchitis. >> let's hope that he makes a speedy recovery there. thanks for the very latest. breaking this morning, former vice president mike pence officially launching his bid for a presidential run. he post thd video on social media overnight. >> my family has lived the american dream.

i had the great honor to serve in congress, as governor and as your vice president. and i'll always be proud of the progress we made together. >> he's scheduled to speak to supporters in iowa later today. former new jersey governor chris christie formally announcing his bid for the white house yesterday. scott mcgrew is tracking all of this. he's going to have an update on the race for the white house coming up at 5:45. and this morning passengers from an sfo-bound flight are still stranded in russia. this comes after the indian plane developed an engine problem, forcing an emergency landing. many of the people onboard are from the bay area. ginger conejero saab is live for us at sfo this morning. i know many of their family members are taking to social media expressing concerns. i would imagine it's very scary. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. good morning to you. a lot of those family members, as you can imagine, feeling
5:06 am
quite a bit of worry because of what happened, and now not only did their family members have to make an emergency landing because the aircraft developed a technical issue with one of its engines, it did so in russia. some of the family members have expressed concern that the flight might get tangled up in russia's ongoing war with ukraine. some taking their concerns to social media. the flight path of the diversion shows it took them far from the war to the eastern end of russia. the u.s. state department has been monitoring russia's response and air india's efforts to get the passengers back to san francisco. >> they are sending, my understanding, a replacement aircraft to the destination, to have the passengers carry on. >> reporter: now, as you can see from these social media photos, the passengers are staying at a school, sleeping on cots. families say they have been made comfortable and have been given

meals, but they hope their family members can make it back to the bay area as soon as possible. an update from the ferry flight that has left mumbai, take a look at this tweet giving us the latest update. that flight is now airborne and is expected to arrive in magadan at 6:30 a.m. local time. the crew is ready to provide any sort of essential support for the passengers, as well as food. those passengers are expected then to take off from magadan and make their way to sfo, where they will arrive sometime tomorrow. >> it may have been scary, at least they were able to contact family members and have some communication with them. thanks, ginger. happening today, the woman accused in the death of a kim kardashian look-alike model will be back in court. vivian gomez is expected to enter a plea in a redwood city courtroom. the last time she was in court a

let them to her car. we are still awaiting word if the dock in oakland will open today after a person died. the circumstances are still unclear. the port was shut down and workers were sent home early. as we have been reporting, this comes as west coast ports are already dealing with a labor issue when it comes to negotiations with those dock workers. this morning haze is blanketing much of the u.s. here is a look. this is new york city. all that smoke from the wildfires burning up in canada even moving in more today. now, this is just a few shots from new york as you see the impact across the tri-state area. cities like boston, buffalo, all dealing with this, as well as minnesota. they're experiencing those hazy conditions. meteorologist kari hall is joining us now. i know you've been monitoring all of that. the air quality there, how is that? >> it's really bad and it's not just hazy.
5:10 am
it's smoke. it smells like smoke when you go outside and it makes it to where you can't even see a very far distance. you don't see the iconic cityscape there. let's get a look at the air quality and what we're measuring as we are getting some of what we call purple air, where you see actually purple sensors on there. that is the most unhealthy air quality. we're seeing it coming down from quebec to ottawa and then upstate new york with that purple air. but a lot of what we're seeing now with the unhealthy air quality continues into new york, and as far south as georgia. so we are seeing this having a widespread impact and we know that wildfire smoke can actually travel thousands of miles. so we are seeing this impacting a big part of the country, even just half of our population on the east coast. so what we're expecting today is for more of the air quality to continue to push to the south, with that wildfire smoke being forced that way.
5:11 am
as we go into today, unfortunately it's going to be another day like what we've seen recently with unhealthy air quality and people being told to stay inside. we'll continue to monitor that. we'll get a look at our forecast. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> the widespread low throughout the south bay cities seems to be $4.19. we'll point out diamond gas on story road. similar situation in the tri-valley. dublin has ana express at $4.19. by comparison, san francisco closer to $4.50, $4.49, national petroleum on cesar chavez street. getting off of the san mateo bridge, debris looks like it may have cleared from the roadway and no more slowing on the hayward side. to the foster city side, westbound jammed up.
5:12 am
we have only one lane open, an overturned rig. chp said maybe 5:30 they'll reopen but we haven't seen a lot of progress. we'll keep tracking the slowdown on the foster city side. coming up on "today in the bay," will they stick with the pga? a lot of sponsors have big decisions to make. >> comedian pete davidson is, like most of us out there, he sometimes spends money on unnecessary things. we're going to tell you the big purchase he says he now regrets and the reason he says he did it in the first place. >> the california mortgage relief program is helping property owners behind on mortgage payments due to the pandemic. those eligible can receive up to $80,000 in grants. our sister station telemundo 48 is holding a phone bank from 5:00 to 7:00 tonight with experts to answer your questions about the program. the number is right there on your screen. we've got a lot more news ahead on this wednesday
5:15 am
good wednesday morning. the time is 5:14. let's get a look at our beautiful sunrise under way in san francisco this morning. we're just seeing a few clouds stretching across the city and it's going to stay partly to mostly cloudy today and temperatures remain in the 60s this afternoon. also cooler than normal for the inland areas. we'll take a look at that microclimate forecast coming up. good news, chp just canceled the alert for the san mateo bridge westbound, all lanes just cleared. that big rig that we showed you that was overturned for hours
5:16 am
looks like it has cleared all westbound lanes. the bad news, there may be more complications in the other direction on the san mateo bridge coming up. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the s&p 500 had its highest close of the year so far on tuesday, highest close since last august. and remember, we had a big rally last week as well. parc hotel slightly higher after it said it was giving up on two hotels in san francisco. the ceo says san francisco's road to recovery remains cloudy. san francisco-based coinbase, we talked about this extensively yesterday, down big after it was sued by the s.e.c. the ceo and cofounder of coin boyce, brian armstrong, lost $361 million worth of value in a single day, as his company's stock slipped hard. coinbase and binance both deal with cryptocurrency, both are
5:17 am
facing accusations from the securities and exchange commission. coinbase says it will conduct business as usual. unrest at farmers insurance. the old ceo told workers to prepare for a new way of working, pretty much everybody at home. so workers sold their cars, they sold houses, one telling the "washington post" he moved across country to be closer to the grandchildren. and then the new ceo came in and you can probably see where this is going, everybody back to the office. speaking of homes, new data this morning show demand for new mortgages continues to fall, even as mortgage rates fall a bit. separately, compass really says there haven't been this few homes on the market in the san francisco bay area since the financial crisis of 2009. >> we're waiting to see how sponsors react to the news the pga has agreed to merge with saudi-owned liv golf. liv golf had trouble bringing in sponsors when it launched, now they're one and the same.
5:18 am
more coming up on the "today" show. >> surprised is an understatement. i think the golf world, including the biggest names in the sport were stunned. i don't think anybody saw this coming. >> back when the golf world did split into two, into pga and liv golf, the head of the pga stood next to 9/11 survivors and said people who stay in the pga, associate with the pga, will never have to apologize for being with the pga. >> yeah, there were a lot of words exchanged yesterday. >> a lot of stuff. this is going to be a story for a while. >> big time. >> not to the benefit of anyone. >> thanks, scott. 5:18 this morning. several bay area tech companies saying more layoffs are on the way. this is according to new filings with the state employment development department. nearly 300 jobs are slated for cuts this year. unity technologies in san francisco, flex in milpitas are
5:19 am
among those slashing jobs. last year tech companies disclosed plans to eliminate 25,000 jobs in the bay area over a 17-month stretch. so far this year, nearly 15,000 jobs have been cut. many companies are saying that they are restructuring and focusing on reducing costs. trending this morning, have you ever purchased something and then immediately regretted it? well, comedian pete davidson is having some buyer's remorse. >> he talked about buying a staten island ferry, an entire ferry at the premiere for the new transformers movie. davidson bought the ferry with his former cohost star. he said they were both under the influence when they made that decision to get the ferry. they paid 280,000 for it, which currently it's sitting at the dock outside of davidson's home. as far as what to do with it, davidson says he and jost are figuring it out. i put it on twitter just moments

ago. what's the biggest thing you've wasted money on? makes you think, huh? >> i had to think about that. i don't think i've ever made a big purchase. certainly not a boat. >> on the order of magnitude, much smaller. >> the only thing i can think of is magazine subscriptions. i'm picky about what i spend on. maybe a few dates. [ laughter ] >> kari, take it away. we're getting started this morning, not having to lug around the umbrella, but it does still feel just like it did yesterday with high humidity and also milder temperatures. the storm system is still spinning across the region. let's loop it back 24 hours to see all that happened with the rain that passed through the bay area yesterday. the storms that developed and moved across some areas that don't usually see it in june, and then we're starting to see
5:21 am
that activity winding down, but the low that caused all of that, that storm system, is just to our south. we're getting that moisture and that humidity rolling in. a couple of light spotty showers farther to the north, but we are seeing clouds linger and we will be drying out. right now we're at 58 degrees in walnut creek, wind at 10 miles per hour, and as we go throughout the day temperatures will go from the upper 50s to the upper 60s by noon and we'll head for the low 70s today. these numbers still at or slightly below what's normal for this time of year so it's nice that we're still getting the milder temperatures, with spots like novato and napa reaching 68 degrees and 64 in san francisco. tomorrow it's basically the same with a few interior valleys getting slightly warmer, reaching 78 in morgan hill and 78 in fairfield. now, on friday it's still going to be nice and mild and that's going to be the pattern going forward, as we're not seeing any
5:22 am
major spikes in temperatures. and we may also see another chance of rain, believe it or not, through mid june. there will be another chance of spotty showers on sunday and maybe again on monday as we see that active weather pattern continuing over the sierra. and some of that energy moving our way. that's also going to cause a dip in temperatures. take a look at our temperature trend for the next ten days in morgan hill. no big warmups as we remain in the 70s through at least the seven-day forecast. mike, what's the update for the san mateo bridge? >> good news, bad news. bad news, eastbound, we don't see any problems for this live shot coming toward the toll plaza, but just east of here, behind the camera, we do have debris reported. it was originally reported here a slower drive, but an update says there may be more debris on the high-rise traveling east. watch for that from the peninsula to the east side there. meanwhile, the westbound direction where we had the big rig overturned, that has cleared
5:23 am
from the roadway. that should clear up back to the speed limit the next few minutes. we do have a car fire on 85 as you're approaching 101. we'll track that as well. >> thank you so much. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> if you've had a move go south, you can speak up and try to get your money back. i'm consumer investigator chrisy
5:26 am
other time of the year and too often it goes poorly. >> unfortunately. if you ever have a problem with a mover, there's a method to get the wheels turning. consumer investigator chris chmura shows us how. >> if you didn't get what you paid for, you don't just have to take it. first, start with the mover. the feds say federal regulations require that your mover have an arbitration program or a legal process to handle arguments. if that fails and you still think your mover is taking advantage of you, we have one or two more avenues you can pursue, depending on where you moved. if you moved between two states, you can complain to uncle sam. the federal motor carrier safety administration regulates movers. snap this qr code to start a
5:27 am
complaint. the fmcsa doesn't resolve disputes but says your complaint may trigger a federal enforcement investigation and that might compel an unresponsive mover to work with you. some states regulate movers, too. so if you moved within one state, you can look for state help. in california it's the bureau of household goods and services. state agencies generally want the same information the feds do. so if you file a federal complaint, filing a state complaint afterward might be easy. one last note, if you paid with a credit card, you can dispute the mover's charge. if you do, include that info in your complaint. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez in san jose where a pedestrian was hit and killed by a car. we'll tell you what we know about what happenedn the i

5:32 am
fire affecting 85. >> yeah, a car fire, no injuries. we do have south 85 slowing quite a bit. it's just before you get to fremont avenue in the southbound direction. i believe they've cleared at least one lane or put out the fire. less distraction and less showing shows up south at the los altos border. the initial slowing you expect across the map north 101 approaching oakland road, mild build for the east bay to be expected. >> thanks, mike. we do have some breaking news overnight. a teenager hit and killed by a car in san jose. now the question is how it happened. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us live in san jose this morning. kris, what do we know so far about what happened here? >> reporter: well, police are telling us very little, but they did just wrap up this investigation just behind me here, the last patrol cars just drove off. we know this happened in the driveway of an apartment complex
5:33 am
as the teenager was walking along that driveway. that's what police have told us up to this point. we are in the 2400 block of this residential area, tucked about a black away from al maddon expressway. when fire crews arrived, they found a teenager stuck under the car. when they were finally able to reach the teenager, it was too late. it appears the driver hit the teen as they were walking along the driveway of the apartment complex, though it is not clear why the crash happened. the young person is the 12th pedestrian hit and killed on san jose city streets this year, the 19th deadly collision with a vehicle. now, it was closed for many hours during the investigation but the street has reopened, so there should not be any impact as you head out to your day this morning. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 5:33. also new overnight, an amazon

delivery truck flips over on highway 92. this happened after 1:30 this morning. officers say the truck hit the center median of the road and flipped on its side. the truck blocked two lanes for a few hours. just about 20 minutes ago, all lanes were reopened. happening today, the man accused of driving a car into a sunnyvale crowd is due in court. back in 2019, police say isaiah peoples intentionally drove into a crowd of peds on a sidewalk in sunnyvale. eight people were injured, including a girl who suffered serious injuries. police and fbi investigated and found peoples was not affiliated with any terrorist organizations. he'll be in court at 8:30 for a preliminary hearing. a follow-up on a story we have been following closely for you, leaders in florida admitting they're responsible for setting up the flights that brought 36 migrants from texas to sacramento. now, people from venezuela,
5:35 am
colombia, guatemala, they were all flown from texas to sacramento in two waves, one friday, another on monday. florida releasing an edited video that they claim shows the migrants consenting to flying to california and celebrating after arriving. the volunteers now caring for the migrants say they were told that migrants had no idea where they were being taken. governor gavin newsom's office responding, calling the video, quote, propaganda. state attorney general rob bonta says the civil and criminal investigation is now under way. >> california is showing the way, we're showing the way that we should act in america. florida's conduct is completely un-american and governor ron desantis should be absolutely embarrassed. >> the migrants are getting help from volunteers in sacramento. now to a live look outside in san jose, where people who live here can expect their water bills to increase. starting july 1st, customers
5:36 am
under the san jose municipal water system will see a 14% rise in those bills, which is about $16 extra per month. the water company serves about 140,000 people in north san jose. the company says the rate hike is due to increased prices from third-party water providers. supply chain issues related to the drought and future infrastructure projects also contributed to the rise. well, the oakland a's may be one step closer to moving to las vegas. nevada's governor is calling for a special session this morning to discuss a proposed las vegas ballpark project for the team. this comes as nevada lawmakers ended their legislative session without voting on the a's ballpark deal on monday. the team wants to build a 30,000 seat ballpark right on the strip. they've reached an agreement with the gaming company that owns tropicana but the a's also need $380 million in public

money from nevada. we spoke with the former executive vice president of the a's who says the team should stay in oakland. >> it's an incredible lack of teamwork, leadership and trust between john fisher, the owner of the a's, rob manfred, the commissioner of major league baseball, and elected officials in oakland. all you need to do is bull doze the coliseum and build a spectacular ballpark there for a lot less than $1.5 billion. >> the special session in nevada is supposed to start at 10:00 this morning. there's a new choice for when it comes to air travel in san jose, starting today. this morning the first spirit airlines flight takes off from sjc. they're launching two flights to las vegas every day and one each day to san diego. today's inaugural departure is to dallas. it's set to take off a little after 10:30 this morning.
5:38 am
let's take a live look at the bay bridge as we get a look at the forecast today. we saw some rain yesterday. how is it looking today? >> it's clearing out today. let's talk about how much rain we measured yesterday. it was quite a bit in san jose, where we had almost a tenth of an inch of rain, and 0.05 of an inch in san rafael. you can see just how small that was. that was actually about half of the normal amount of rainfall we get in june for the south bay. so we made some progress there. now the storm system is winding down. we're still seeing active weather across the region, spotty showers to the north and off the coast, but we will be clearing today. we head for upper 60s today in santa rosa and 75 in livermore. we'll talk about what's ahead in a few minutes. mike, you've been tracking now the south bay with an issue. >> that's right. we're looking over here toward south 85. we still have reports from chp that two of your lanes are blocked as you're traveling
5:39 am
toward fremont avenue. that's getting toward access to sunnyvale and los altos border. the earlier car fire, i believe the fire is out. there are no injuries reported. we have a couple of trucks heading to the scene. that's it for the south bay other than your typical northbound slowing. we have no major problems along the peninsula. the overturned big rig cleared earlier this morning. we're looking ahead for the weekend and i want to warn you about the full closure this weekend, friday night and through monday morning early, we have that closure for this one section. you're down to one lane down through pleasanton, south 680 will be a tough drive. i would say use 880 instead of 680 over the weekend. >> thanks, mike. an unthinkable situation unfolding during a high school graduation on the east coast. next on "today in the bay," the accused gunman in a mass shooting in richmond, virginia, and the details we're learning about the victims. >> and more candidates join the race for the presidency of 2024.

good morning. there's so many people running for the republican nomination to take on joe biden, the idea is that maybe they'll split the primary vote in a way that helps trump. 2% or haley, 2% or christie, maybe 20% for desantis and so on. republican chris sununu said he's staying out of the race for just that reason. he would like to see a single strong candidate run against trump for the nomination. as laura mentioned, the former vice president pence is the latest to announce, with a video. take a look. >> i had the great honor to serve in congress as governor and as your vice president, and i'll always be proud of the progress we made together, for a stronger, more prosperous america. >> now, note, you do not see trump in that video at all, despite the fact that pence was trump's vice president. in fact, this is the first time in american history a former vice president has run against his own former boss. former new jersey governor chris christie, who endorsed trump in
