starting out feeling warmer, it will not be a warmer day. only reaching 75 in fremont, about the same in san jose and morgan hill. 73 in mountain view and upper 60s for much of the north bay. we'll talk about the rest of our forecast coming up. mike, you're heading to the east bay checking out slowing. >> we have the backup standard and not a problem off the berkeley curve. this is a wednesday, we're looking at 37 with more slowing and highway 4 more slowing. i point out it's a wednesday because we often see the heavier commute on this day. so far holding steady. i'm concerned about a crash south 880 just about a street, reports of a couple of lanes that might be affected and someone was out of their vehicle, perhaps taking care of business. chp does advise you stay in your vehicle. we've seen serious crashes, so we're going to track. it is a big build south 680 around sunol boulevard. this should be off to the shoulder. we'll track pleasanton.

back to you. this morning we are following breaking news, pope francis is back in the hospital. this comes as the 86-year-old pontiff is being placed under anesthesia for a procedure on his abdomen. brie jackson joins us with more. >> reporter: the vatican medical team took pope francis to the hospital in the late afternoon. here is a live look at the university hospital where the pope is currently staying, awaiting surgery. the vatican says he will have surgery on his intestine and will be hospitalized for many days while he recovers. the vatican says its medical team advises surgery after treating the pope for a hernia. the vatican released a statement that said, in part, quote, he will undergo laparotomy and abdominal wall plastic surgery.

it is used to treat and diagnose abdominal issues. this comes two years after the pope had 13 inches of his colon removed because it was inflamed and just a few months after he spent three days in the hospital for bronchitis. so something we're keeping a close eye on, laura. >> most definitely. hopefully he'll make a speedy recovery. thanks for the latest. also breaking this morning, vice president mike pence is officially launching his bid for a presidential run. he posted a campaign video on social media overnight. >> my family has lived the american dream. i had the great honor to serve in congress, as governor, and as your vice president. i'll always be proud of the progress we made together. >> pence is scheduled to speak to supporters in iowa later today. former new jersey governor chris christie formally announced his bid for the white house yesterday. >> and this morning passengers from an sfo-bound flight are still stranded in russia. this comes after the air india plane developed an engine

problem, forcing an emergency landing. many people onboard the plane are from the bay area. ginger conejero saab is live for us this morning at sfo. i would imagine many family members there are nervous about all of this because they have been expressing their concerns on social media. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. you can imagine quite a bit of worry from those family members, and as you mentioned, they've been taking to social media to show photos and videos, inland valley updates on their family members. they were concerned because an air india flight was forced to make an emergency landing due to a technical issue with one of its engines and did so in russia. family members were concerned that the flight might get tangled up in russia's ongoing war with ukraine. but the flight path shows it took them to the eastern end of russia. the state department has been monitoring russia's response and air india's efforts to get the passengers back to san

francisco, giving family members some relief. >> it's going to be difficult because she's been out of her house for a while now, it's another 48 hours, so it becomes 72 hours being out on the road. it's not easy in general for anyone, but someone who is 68, i think it's even harder. >> they are sending, my understanding, a replacement aircraft to the destination to have the passengers carry on. >> reporter: and here are some social media photos that passengers' family members have shared. the passengers are staying at a school, sleeping on cots. their families say they have been made comfortable and given meals, but they do hope those passengers can make it back to the bay area as soon as possible. and according to this tweet from air india, the ferry flight has

left and is making its way to the airport. it's equipped with food and essentials for the passengers. the flight is expected to leave magadan airport and make its way to sfo, where passengers are expected to arrive tomorrow, june 8th. it's been a long journey for these passengers. hopefully they'll make their way back home by tomorrow. >> they're going to be excited when that long journey ends. ginger, thank you. it is 6:06. and happening today, the woman accused in the death of a kim kardashian look-alike model will be back in court. vivian gomez is expected to enter a plea in a redwood city courtroom. the last time she was in court a judge allowed her to post bail only if she surrendered her u.s. and columbian passports, stayed in california and banned her from performing any medical or cosmetic procedures. prosecutors say gomez traveled from florida to a burlingame hotel back in april. that's where they say she gave

an unlicensed injection to christina gourkani, an antioch native, who died hours later. gomez faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and practicing medicine without a license. we're still awaiting word if the port of oakland will reopen today after a dock worker died. it happened yesterday. circumstances surrounding the person's death are still unclear. the port was shut down, workers were sent home early. as we've been reporting, this comes as west coast ports are already dealing with labor issues due to an ongoing negotiation going on with dock workers. this morning, haze blanketing much of the u.s. this is new york city. look at all the smoke here. this is from the fires burning up in canada and the bad news, they're expecting even more today. but just like we're seeing here in new york city, we're also seeing it in cities like boston, buffalo, even parts of minnesota. they are experiencing haze and it's going to continue. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring all of this.

you're tracking the air quality there. how is it looking? >> it's still going to be bad the next few days. we've seen very hazy skies, people posting pictures all over social media like i can't even see the skyline. >> i don't know how to deal with this. >> they're like, hey, california, what do we do now? this is what's going on. you see all of the smoke coming down from quebec and toward ottawa. those are wildfires that are burning in canada and the weather pattern is pushing that smoke into those areas and they can really experience -- they are experiencing that really bad air quality that's having people stay inside now, and the schools are telling the kids they can't go out for those outdoor activities and things like that right now. and we're seeing more of that coming down from those wildfires that are burning out of control. we've seen concentrated plumes of smoke being pushed southward due to the weather patterns that are causing that southward trend of the wind and that travel of

the wildfire smoke coming into those areas. so it does look like that's going to continue not only today, but the next several days, and it's going to continue to be very smoky there. >> here at home we're seeing clouds that will eventually clear out and we'll talk about this and our weather moving forward in a few minutes. mike has a look at what we can expect for some of those gas prices. >> we're looking at a pretty good theme of $4.19 for many spots in the bay area. widespread lows throughout the south bay, $4.19 for the price. we'll point out diamond gas on story road for san jose, and you see the similar situation in the tri-valley, dublin has ana express and exxon on amador valley boulevard, both at $4.19 as well. by comparison, san francisco is closer to $4.50. this is the national petroleum on cesar chavez. thanks for the reports through gasbuddy.com.

the time is 6:14 on this wednesday morning. let's get a live look outside in palo alto. we're starting out with clouds overhead and it is 57 degrees, just a little bit warmer than where we typically start our mornings. and it's going to be very slow to warm up today. so we'll see a mix of sun and

clouds and in the low 70s this afternoon. we'll take a look at when we could see rain returning in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. a light drive on the peninsula. across the bay we're looking at the nimitz. we have slowing southbound out of san leandro through hayward, a couple of crashes. i did spot these flashing lights north 880 just north of the coliseum, everything is off the shoulder. you'll slow down again at the bay bridge toll plaza. very happy wednesday to you. the s&p 500 had its highest close of the year so far on tuesday, highest close since last august, actually. and remember we had a big rally last week as well. park hotels slightly higher a day after it said it was giving up on two hotels in san francisco. the ceo says san francisco's road to recovery remains cloudy. san francisco-based coinbase, we talked about this extensively yesterday, down big after it was sued by the s.e.c.

the ceo and founder of coinbase, brian armstrong, lost $361 million worth of value in a single day as his company's stock slipped hard. coinbase and binance both deal with cryptocurrency, both are facing accusations from the securities and exchange commission. coinbase says it will conduct business as usual. >> unrest at farmers insurance. the old ceo told workers to prepare for a new way of working, pretty much everybody at home. so workers sold their cars, sold houses, one telling the "washington post" he moved across the country to be closer to his grandchildren. and then the new ceo came in and i think you can probably figure out where this is going, everybody back to the office. >> speaking of homes, new data this morning show demand for new mortgages continues to fall, even as mortgage rates fall a bit as well. separately, compass real estate says there haven't been this few

homes on the market in the san francisco bay area since the financial crisis of 2009. >> we're waiting to see how sponsors react to the news the pga has agreed to merge with liv golf. liv golf had trouble bringing in sponsors when it launched. now they're one and the same. more coming up on the "today" show. >> surprised is an understatement. i think the golf world, including the biggest names in the sport were stunned. i don't think anybody saw this coming. >> when the split originally happened, the ceo of pga defended the pga by saying no one is ever going to have to apologize or be embarrassed to be associated with the pga. obviously taking a shot at liv golf. now liv golf is the pga. >> right. >> and the pga is liv golf. and i don't know how you balance that. but this is one of those things, it will have ramifications for a long time. >> big time. >> thanks, scott.

6:17 right now. to some eye-opening details about sharks. california marine biologists say sharks may be closer than you think when you swim at the beach. researchers studied thousands of drone videos to see just how close sharks get to surfers and swimmers. one researcher, dr. chris lowe, says they found sharks on both coasts like to be near people. >> as we go in the water a lot, we assume there aren't sharks because we don't see them. that doesn't mean they're not there. >> lowe says in new england the beaches there, they see more adult great white sharks searching for seals, which is not as big of a problem in california. still, he says it's a good idea to research the beaches you're headed to in order to see what type of wildlife may be lurking in the water. trending this morning, a one of a kind quirky home is on sale in l.a. county. >> this is a look at the bridge

alhambra. >> who crosses my house? >> how do you have people pick you up? >> i would like to see waze. >> make a u-turn. >> your destination is three feet below you. >> we're staying right here in the bay area where the weather has been refreshing. it's been interesting, to say the least. let's take a look back at the rainfall totals that we had just 24 hours ago, and in san jose it was 0.09 of an inch of rainfall, so you see how small it was for some parts of the bay area, even though in san jose it rained for an hour, at least. and we had 0.04 in morgan hill and in san francisco 0.01 of an inch of rain. that's the most that's fallen on this date since 1993. then we take a look at our average june monthly rainfall totals for san jose, we made

half of it with that 0.09 and we normally get about 0.18. this is the third driest month we usually see. as we go into the next several days there may be a little bit more. things are quieting down, but you can still the area of low pressure and the storm system that brought in that wave of rain, still well to the south of us. there's still going to be the chance that the sierra could see thunderstorms developing. we're looking at temperatures headed for the upper 60s as our sky gradually clears today. we'll reach a high of 73 in dublin and 75 in fremont and 75 in los gatos. tomorrow it's also about a degree or two below what's normal for this time in june, and then we see several more days of dry weather, and possibly more rain. we're talking about this coming in on sunday, but definitely a lot of action happening for those upper elevations over the sierra, and maybe again on monday with a slight chance of

showers moving through. we'll be watching that. otherwise, we're headed for some mild temperatures, highs in the mid-70s inland and morning temperatures in the mid-50s, while san francisco will continue to see highs in the low to mid-60s over the next few days. mike, you're seeing a backup through pleasanton. >> the crash, we were told by chp it's off to the shoulder just a few minutes after it happened. that's enough of a distraction with this build to cause all that jam south 680 from the dublin interchange down to sunol boulevard, just shy of the exit there. now, once you're past that, everything looks pretty smooth heading toward sunol. over here we have more folks traveling through the castro valley y. but right there, north 238, the transition to 880, reports of a big rig and a dump truck. two large vehicles are involved in a crash, so there may be more complication if they have to stop traffic to move either of those vehicles. meanwhile, still slow toward hayward and the south bay

>> making a new pitch. the key meeting now set to happen today as the oakland a's look to make las vegas their new home. this is "today in the bay." >> 6:30 on your wednesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. time to get a look at that forecast. we saw rain yesterday. will we see it again today? >> it's looking much better today. we are seeing rain chances go down. it's still cloudy but eventually it's going to clear up and a lot of the bay area is going to see sunshine. but as we head out the door in san francisco, this is what it looks like. maybe it's time for that outdoor workout in palo alto and our temperatures are in the upper 50s. we're going to see our morning gradually clearing up, and our temperatures slowly warming as well, headed for the mid to upper 60s and eventually hitting the low 70s today. these numbers across the bay area for our highs are still just a slightly bit below what

we typically see for this time of year. we'll reach 69 in santa rosa, while livermore will see a high of 75. mike, you're seeing delays as commuters leave i-580? >> right here along the horizontal. that latitude, if you travel south toward the sunol area, it's really jammed up. this crash is on the shoulder, but it's been a distraction in that portion of the tri-valley for quite some time. traveling across the castro valley y, there's another crash at 238 and 880 and that is causing a slowdown. a big rig and a dump trunk involved there. the peninsula, no major delays and we have your standard build throughout your commute spots, no trouble through this map. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:32 right now. and breaking overnight, a teenager was hit and killed by a car in san jose.

now the question is how it happened. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is joining us live from the scene there. kris, what do we know about this? >> reporter: we know that san jose police and fire have left the scene, but the investigation must have revealed something, they have not told us what that is at this point. what we know is this crash happened along the driveway of one of the apartment complexes in this quiet neighborhood, residential neighborhood. this is a 2400 block of riconada drive. san jose police and fire were called out just before 1:00 this morning and when fire crews arrived, they found the teenager under the car. when they were able to reach them, it was too late. it appears the driver hit the teen as they were walking along the driveway of the apartment complex. the young person is the 12th pedestrian hit and killed on san jose city streets this year and the 19th deadly collision.

the street was closed during the investigation but is open this morning. the san jose police towed away the vehicle involved in the crash. we don't know what happened with the driver at this point. we will continue asking this morning. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> i can't imagine what that family is going through. thank you. also new overnight, an amazon delivery truck flipped over on highway 92. it happened just after 1:30 this morning. officers say the truck hit the center median of the road, then flipped on its side. the truck blocked two lanes for a few hours, but about an hour ago all lanes were reopened. happening today, the man accused of driving a car into a sunnyvale crowd is due in court. in 2019 police say isaiah peoples intentionally drove into a crowd of pedestrians on a sidewalk in sunnyvale. eight people were injured, including a 13-year-old girl who suffered serious injuries. police and fbi investigators found he was not affiliated with

any terrorist organizations. he will be in court for a preliminary hearing. to a follow-up on a story, leaders in florida admitting they are responsible for setting up the flights that brought 36 migrants from texas to sacramento. the people from venezuela, colombia, guatemala, were flown from texas to sacramento in two waves, one on friday, the other on monday. florida released an edited video that claims from the migrants were consenting to the flight to california and celebrating after arriving. volunteers now caring for the migrants say that they were told that the migrants had no idea where they were being taken. governor gavin newsom's office responding, calling that video, quote, exploitative propaganda. state attorney general rob bonta says a civil and criminal investigation is under way. >> california is showing the way, we're showing the way that we should act in america. florida's conduct is completely

un-american and governor ron desantis should be absolutely embarrassed. >> the migrants are getting help from volunteers in sacramento. the oakland a's may be one step closer to moving to las vegas. nevada's governor is calling for a special session this morning to discuss the proposed las vegas ballpark project. this comes as nevada lawmakers ended their legislative session without voting on the a's ballpark deal on monday. the team wants to build a 30,000 seat ballpark on the strip. they've reached an agreement with the gaming company that owns the tropicana but also need $380 million in public money from nevada. we spoke with a former executive vice president of the a's who says the team should stay in oakland. >> it's an incredible lack of teamwork, leadership and trust between john fisher, the owner of the a's, rob manfred, the commissioner of major league baseball, and elected officials in oakland. all you need to do is bulldoze

the coliseum and build a spectacular new ballpark there for a lot less than $1.5 billion. >> the special session in nevada is supposed to start at 10:00 this morning. residents in san jose are expected -- they can expect their water bills to increase. starting july 1st, customers under the san jose municipal water system will see a 14% rise in their bills, which amounts to about $16 extra per month. the water company serves about 140,000 people in north san jose, evergreen, and coyote valley. the company says the rate hike is due to increased prices from third-party water providers, supply chain issues related to the drought and future infrastructure projects. taking a live look out this morning across the bay bridge, you can see it's gloomy this

morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. i saw some sun here and there in some spots, but not so much there. >> not so much there. we're still seeing clouds moving by, and still in an active weather pattern across the region. for the bay area things have since quieted down and we're not seeing the waves of rain like we did yesterday late morning into the afternoon. in fact, over the past few hours we are seeing much of the rain staying to the south of us and eventually we'll start to see more sunshine going into late morning as well as the afternoon. martinez starts out at 58 degrees as you head out the door. it's going to be 62 degrees with a few peeks of sunshine going through late morning and then eventually clearing up as it heads into the low to mid-70s for the inland east bay and mid-70s for the south bay as well. but upper 60s for the north bay and much of the peninsula. so we'll talk about when we could see showers returning. mike takes us back to the tri-valley. >> we still have a crash on the shoulder, south 680 under sunol

boulevard. foothill road, parallel to 680, looks like it's maintaining a relatively smooth speed. i believe it's just a distraction. no lanes reportedly blocked. it is a tough place for the tri-valley. the castro valley y moves smoothly, despite the fact there's a crash north 238 at 880. the rest of the build looking standard for the peninsula and south bay. nothing major there. highway 17, a special note today and tomorrow, farther south around granite creek, they will have a lane blocked as they're doing what i believe is tree trimming work. that will be the factor from 8:30 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m. so watch for that if you're traveling south of santa cruz during the middle of the day. the bay bridge, standard. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:39 right now. demonstrators clash at a school board meeting in southern california. ahead on "today in the bay," the debate that sparked brawls in the parking lot that eventually forced police to step in.

good wednesday morning. it is 6:42 now. as you're heading out in the east bay, we're taking a look at our danville commute. it will be mostly cloudy for the start of the day. we'll see clouds rolling by as the sun peeks out and temperatures headed for the low 70s. still cooler than normal and we'll get a look back at how much rain fell and when we could see it again in our microclimate forecast. and what we see in this live look here from the richmond side of the bridge to san rafael, unusual backup pattern. all lanes are full. that means there's a crash that's just past this camera. chp just reports a crash over here on the richmond side of the

bridge. we'll track this impact on the rest of the bay coming up. it is 6:43. developing now, the suspect accused in a mass shooting at a high school graduation on the east coast will be in court today. the 19-year-old man will be arraigned. now, the shooting happened outside of a high school graduation that was held at the virginia commonwealth university in richmond yesterday. two people died. one of them an 18-year-old student who had just graduated. five others were injured. investigators believe the suspect knew at least one of the victims. at least three people arrested following a violent clash outside of a school board meeting in southern california. at the center of it all, what kids should or should not be taught in the classroom. police say several hundred protesters there gathered outside of last night's meeting. many waving the american flags. the others waving pride flags. demonstrators are taking issue with lgbtq+ curriculum and policies. the protest was largely

peaceful, but some of those in the group were a little rowdy. police in riot gear stormed in trying to calm down the crowd but the disorder continued. ultimately the police declared an unlawful assembly. just into our newsroom, cnn ceo chris licht is stepping down after leading the network for over a year. the chief executive's departure comes as he faced criticism after the network hosted a town hall with donald trump and the network's ratings started to drop. we should note licht worked as an executive producer in our newsroom about 20 years ago. president joe biden is facing even more competitors for the office. this comes as both chris christie and mike pence throw their hats in the race. >> the big winner here may actually be former president donald trump. >> that's a logical way of thinking. good morning. there's so many people running for the republican nomination to take on joe biden that they'll split the primary vote in a way

so let's get started this morning with our weather as we're seeing some clouds overhead, after that rain that moved through yesterday. let's talk about how much we measured, with san jose getting 0.09 of an inch of rain at the airport, and i know there may be other parts of the city that got a little more. in san rafael we had 0.05 of an inch of rain. it wasn't a lot, but as we take a look at san jose it was the most rain we've had on that date since 1993. and that's when we had 0.16 that fell. now, our monthly total that we typically see is about double this amount, so june is our third driest month of the year. we're still seeing active weather. this is looping the past 24 hours to show you all of the action happening with thunderstorms and lightning, all of those icons show

cloud-to-ground lightning and there's active weather to our south. we are seeing things quieting down, still some clouds lingering. as we go into today, eventually we'll see sunshine. we're going to see our high temperatures in the upper 60s for much of the north bay, 71 for hayward and martinez, 75 for livermore, san jose, as well as los gatos. tomorrow it's still about the same, maybe just a little bit warmer in a few inland areas. we'll have a few days of some mild temperatures and partly cloudy skies. but if you can believe it, we have another chance of rain in the forecast, by the end of the weekend on sunday it's showing a little bit of that moisture making its way into the bay area after daily storms fire up over the sierra. that pattern continues. but we could see some of that coming into the bay area as well. we're looking at cooler than normal temperatures continuing. take a look at morgan hill in the next ten days. there's nothing but 70s here. there's no 80s, no 90s, no 100 degrees. we're seeing a steady

temperature for most days and those rain chances continuing. and san francisco staying in the 60s throughout at least the next seven days. mike, you're tracking a crash in richmond. >> it's affecting the bridge getting over to san rafael. the backup is starting to ease a bit. we have this bigger backup than we expect at the toll plaza and it's building on the approach coming out of richmond itself. that will be a factor. the span is okay. the bay bridge, standard backup. there may be more folks that shift down in the area toward 37, but we haven't seen an appreciable change in the speed sensors. the crash still remains north 238 at 880, but it doesn't seem to be a problem out of castro valley. slow through pleasanton but the crash looks like it's been moved. >> thank you very much. 6:53 right now. happening now, san francisco unified school district is preparing meals to serve to kids all summer. the district has been offering free breakfast and lunch to kids over the last school year and

>> it happened at an apartment complex in the 2400 block of rinconada drive, about a block away from the expressway. they found the teenager under the car. this young person is the 12th pedestrian hit and killed on san jose city streets this year. also breaking, pope francis is awaiting surgery. here is a look outside of the hospital where he is staying in rome. the vatican says he will have surgery on his intestine and will be hospitalized for many days after that while he recovers. the vatican says that its medical team advises surgery after treating the pope for a hernia. this all comes two years after the pope had about 13 inches of his colon removed because it was inflamed, and just a few months after he spent three days in the hospital for bronchitis. just into our newsroom, the san francisco department of emergency management is asking you to avoid the area of duboce
