documents investigation. what does that mean for the president? what does that mean for the investigation? >> i know there's a lot of terminology flying around, target, witness. the basic idea is that the lawyers have been informed that he's a target. it means that they believe that he has been suspected of committing a crime does it mean that he is absolutely going to get indicted no but it means he is facing significant legal exposure and it's again another data point that suggests that we are nearing the end of this investigation. the president, i should mention, former president maintains that he has done nothing wrong, saying on truth social yesterday, i have not been told that i've been indicted. so, we're still not there yet. i want to make that clear to people and i also don't want people at home to think that the doj just reached this conclusion that he's a target. we've known for quite some time. remember, they raided his home in mar-a-lago. we've known for some time that he was sort of in the ire of t m charge this but this is -- we're reaching a different critical junction at this point >> a lot of folks might be a little confused, because we're now seeing that activity out of a separate grand jury in south florida. most of the attention had been focused on d.c does that mean that we might see charges in two different places or no? >> i think the reason for that is that he has to be able to prove that bringing the charges something actually happened. that the crime actually happened in that place. the whole thing has been the whole time about his retention
7:14 am
of classified documents, obstructing their efforts to get the documents back that all happened in florida, of course, the investigators are in d.c., the justice department is in d.c they might prefer washington, d.c., given the jury pool, given that the judges are very well versed in classified document issues but all the action happens in florida and they don't want to have any delays or have them file a bunch of motions to get the case dismissed that's why you might see charges in florida >> and lastly, it's perhaps a little hard for folks to keep up, we are talking about four separate criminal investigations, any information into the january 6th increasing
7:15 am
the insurrection. >> as it relates to his efforts to stay in office in the january 6th insurrection, we have now learned that a key ally, steve bannon, a longtime adviser to the former president was in fact subpoenaed as it relates to just that investigation. that subpoena went out in late may. as for whether he'll comply, we don't know, an attorney declined to comment and so did the justice department. >> let's move now to breaking news out of france. several children were stabbed on a playground. it happened in the alpine town of amity, about five hours southeast of paris. officials say an attacker with a knife wounded four children and wounded an adult in a park. three of the victims are said to be in critical condition. police say the suspect was quickly apprehended and taken into custody. they say he is a syrian national with legal refugee status in france. french president emanuel macron reacting to this morning, calling the attack absolutely cowardice. he tweeted, the nation is in shock. our thoughts are with them as well as their families and emergency services mobilized. paris lawmakers interrupted a debate to hold a moment of silence for the victims. also this morning, the vatican has just released a new statement on the pope's condition, following his

the doctors telling him, you can't do any heavy lifting. he says, i'm the pope, i don't lift weights, but he does lift babies, and that's off-limits too. >> good to hear the 86-year-old pontiff is on the mend. we have a lot more to get to, including the prime suspect in the nearly 20-year-old disappearance of natalee holloway being handed over to the fbi in peru today. from there, he will be flown to alabama to face charges related to an alleged extortion attempt. nbc's guad venegas is at the airport in peru for us. guad, good morning. >> reporter: good morning hoda. van der sloot arrived here as agent the waited for him here. they took over custody and then the agents and van der sloot board the flight back to the u.s. in the u.s. he will face charges nearly 20 years after the disappearance of natalee holloway. this morning, 35-year-old joran

>> one is that he will need to be arraigned on the charges against him. the other is that a decision will need to be made about whether to keep him in custody pending trial. that would seem to be a foregone conclusion. >> reporter: the move to the u.s. happening despite a last-ditch legal effort by van der sloot's lawyer this week to fight his surrender after originally agreeing to it. joyce vance is the former u.s. attorney who signed the original indictment back in 2010. >> because there's no way of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that she's dead, there's no way to charge the case as a murder. but it will be justice and it will matter. >> 18-year-old natalee holloway vanished during a high school graduation trip to aruba back in 2005. authorities say van der sloot and several others were with her the last night she was seen alive. the teen's remains have never been found, but today, a long-awaited reckoning for her family is one step closer to reality. >> until joran faces extortion charges in the u.s., then justice is not being served. >> in the next few minutes, van
