livermore, 71 in martinez, as well as mountain view, with san mateo headed for 66 degrees. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend forecast in just a few minutes. mike, you have a closure in the tri-valley? >> we have a closure now in the tri-valley and we'll have another later in the tri-valley. right now it's northbound 680, right around 84 heading up toward sunol boulevard where there's a lot of congestion and road work going on. farther north, another set of closures, those should be picked up in the next few minutes. the commute is light through the area and the commute is in the opposite direction, so southbound 680, which looks clear getting into san francisco. >> thank you, mike. a federal grand jury is indicting former president donald trump on seven criminal charges. >> these are all related to trump's alleged mishandling of over 100 classified documents discovered at his mar-a-lago home in florida. against the former president. >> reporter: good morning, laura, marcus. well, this marks the first time in u.s. history that a former president has been charged or indicted on federal charges. nbc news has learned that at least one of the charges is related to the espionage act. former president trump indicted on seven criminal charges in connection to more than 100 classified documents seized from his florida estate. trump claiming innocence in this video posted online. >> i did nothing wrong and we'll fight this out, just like we've been fighting for seven years. >> reporter: the indictment is sealed but two sources briefed on the matter say charges include false statements. his legal team says there's at least one charge related to the espionage act. >> there's not going to be an arrest. this is coming in on a summons. >> reporter: a spokesperson for

the special counsel declined to comment. experts say let the legal process play out. >> it's not enough that you have a strong case. it is also important that the public understand that this is not selective prosecution, that this is not somebody who is singled out, that he's being treated just like anyone else and there are legions of cases of people who did far less who are in jail because of this kind of conduct. >> reporter: trump allies are weighing in. on twitter house speaker kevin mccarthy called it a dark day for the united states of america. gop challengers are also defending the front-runner. >> what we've seen is the weaponization of the department of justice against a former president. >> reporter: trump insists the charges are politically motivated. >> they're trying to destroy a reputation so they can win an election. >> reporter: this marks the second time the former president

has been indicted since he left office. and former president trump is scheduled to appear in a federal court in miami on tuesday. >> brie, thank you. and mr. trump's attorney is speaking out in an interview. ginger conejero saab is breaking down how he's responding to the charges coming up in the next half hour. taking a live look at the milpitas b.a.r.t. station. soon you can expect to pay even more for b.a.r.t. tickets and parking fees. it comes as the agency is facing a huge budget deficit as it struggles to increase ridership. the plan approved by the b.a.r.t. board includes raising fares 11% over two years starting in january. for the first increase, the average fare of $4.20 will go up to $4.43. for parking, the daily fee would vary increasing from $3 to $6.30 a day. there's still no decision on the proposed oakland a's

ballpark on the las vegas strip. the legislature adjourned their special session. the plan is in limbo at least until monday. the proposal calls for $380 million in public funds to help pay for the $1.5 billion stadium. at a hearing earlier this week, some senators questioned why a billionaire team needs hundreds of millions of dollars that could be spent on services like education and health care. if a vote comes next week and passes, it will head to the lawmakers for a debate and a vote. if it passes there, it heads to nevada's governor, who is expected to sign it into law. new this morning, a man convicted of stalking a number of women in san francisco is being sentenced to six years in prison. the san francisco district attorney says 34-year-old bill hobbs must also register as a sex offender for a minimum of ten years. hobbs was arrested in 2022 and convicted of felony, false imprisonment, sexual battery and

assault. investigators say he groped and assaulted at least 14 women. there's relief in sight for people living around the martinez refinery. scientists say there was no long-term damage to the soil. you might recall back in november tons of heavy metal laden dust was released around the refinery. health leader released the report yesterday saying the dust was not a risk to the soil. neighbors formed a group called healthy martinez and have urged the refinery to install something called a grass scrubber. a spokesperson for the group explains it would drastically reduce daily discharges and help avoid catalyst releases. >> they need to install the safety equipment that's going to keep us safe and that's a wet gas scrubber. >> the refinery apologized and said they have identified appropriate corrective actions at the refinery. 5:07 right now.

and happening now, hazardous air quality conditions continue to blanket much of the country. here is a look we want to show you of washington, d.c. we don't have that look, but i can tell you the smoke from the canadian wildfires continue to blow over the east coast and conditions are not stopping any new yorkers. even with air quality alerts, there are still many outdoor events planned this week. >> reporter: we are in queens where last-minute preps are taking place for the much anticipated governor's vault. the air quality advisory in the area has been extended in new york and new jersey until midnight tonight. this all comes as lots of events, several major outdoor ones, are taking place throughout the weekend. of course, one here in new york is the governor's ball starting today at noon eastern time when the first performers are scheduled to hit the stage. but gates will be opened 15 minutes before for spectators.

the festival will take place through the weekend and through late sunday night and at this point all the acts remain on the lineup. organizers expect that air quality conditions will continue to improve over our region. meanwhile, governor kathy hochul in new york spoke yesterday about the 155th running of the belmont stakes, announcing new air quality guidelines for horse racing. >> if the air quality exceeds 200 at the facility, at any facility, there will be no racing. that's going to be canceled if the air quality is above 200. if the air quality is 150 to 200, only horses that pass an additional pre-race vet exam nation will be permitted to race and we'll be closely monitoring this because this is a national phenomenon. >> reporter: the attentions are turning to the conditions outside, at one point new york city had the unhealthiest air quality in the world this past week and it is still affecting people, especially those with respiratory conditions, as we bring you back to flushing meadows corona park.

important to note that we have also seen an uptick, a rise in city emergency room visits with asthma-related cases over the past few days. so new yorkers are taking that into consideration as we head into the weekend, especially those with underlying issues. reporting from flushing meadows corona park, gabby acevedo, "today in the bay." right now at 5:09, we're still monitoring the air quality as we see major much of new york, especially upstate new york. we are seeing improvements even into the city this morning. but we can see the impacts, quite widespread across the region. but it is getting a little better and hopefully that does continue heading into the weekend. as you're getting up in the bay area, getting ready to head out for work in gilroy, our morning commute starts out cloudy, temperatures in the mid-50s. we're going to see peeks of sunshine as we go throughout today and going from upper 50s to upper 60s, eventually reaching into the mid-70s.

low 70s for san jose, 71 expected in livermore and a high of 77 in fairfield, upper 60s in napa. mike says so far the commute looks pretty smooth. >> it's friday, it's green. there's one section that is not green over here where we continue to see the sensors change as we have conditions changing. right now the stretch has the overnight road work. i think they're still waiting for the pavement to cure. it slows approaching the northbound 680 and 84 transition. that means they are moving crews and getting ready to reopen and we're talking about this section affected by the weekend closure between sunol, a full closure over the next three days. facebook and google crack down on in-person work attendance and another company is taking a new approach. ahead this morning on "today in the bay," the steps salesforce is taking to try to keep employees in the office.

happy friday to you. it is 5:14. let's make plans for the day. some of that may include getting outside and taking in the nice and comfortable weather. going for a hike in the east bay is going to be mostly cloudy to start, temperatures in the upper 50s. we're headed for the low 70s this afternoon with partly to mostly cloudy skies. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend forecast coming up. we're taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. look at that beautiful drive. it looks kind of cool. heading down out of the tunnel, robin williams tunnel. we're showing how things are moving from the north bay, but also checking out what's going on in the east bay, waiting for the construction to clear from 680. wall street is set for a mixed open after the s&p 500 notched its highest close for

2023. stocks climbed in thursday's session as the market builds on recent gains and traders looked ahead to key inflation data next week, as well as the federal reserve's latest policy announcement. >> general motors joining rival ford and partnering with tesla to use its north american charging network and technology for electric vehicles. under the deal, gm vehicles will be able to access 12,000 of tesla's fast chargers starting next year. gm will begin installing a charging port used by tesla in evs starting in 2025. ceo mary barra said the deal will save the automaker up to $400 million of the previously announced $750 million investment to build out ev charging. and u.s. household wealth hitting its highest level in the year, elevated by a strong stock market. americans' net worth rose nearly

to $149 trillion according to the federal reserve's quarterly report on u.s. financial accounts. americans also saw the value of their stock holdings increase by about $2.4 trillion, offsetting the $600 billion decline in real estate holdings. despite the increase, americans' net worth is still below the recent high point of nearly $153 trillion recorded in early 2022. marcus and laura, the slightly lower number is thanks to the sky lie inflation we're seeing. >> that it is. thanks, pippa. new this morning, another bay area tech company moving out of san francisco. the company had a lease for a building on market street that expired back in march of 2020. employees worked remotely during the pandemic and now skillz new office will be located in las vegas. they'll still have satellite offices in san mateo and los angeles. companies like uber, reddit have

also opted to move offices out of san francisco. meantime, salesforce is offering an incentive for employees to return to the office. the company is not mandating a return to work but pledged to donate $10 a day for each employee who shows up for two weeks starting june 12th. in march, the company recommended some teams show up to the office three days a week, teams that deal with customers it was recommended showing up four days a week. facebook parent company meta also asking all employees to show up to work at least three days a week. this is in september. and google is also expecting employees to show up three days a week. >> i always like when you see a co-worker you haven't seen in a while. >> we get that a lot here. a dynamite new song is now trending this morning. >> k-pop group bts is gifting a new song to fans. take a listen. ♪♪ ♪ take two ♪

i want to loop the past 24 hours. take a look at all the lightning, showers and thunderstorms that developed over the sierra, and also just to our north as well. so this weather pattern continues into the weekend, especially if you'll be outside doing some of those outdoor activities. in napa, cloudy, temperatures in the mid-50s and it will stay nice and cool throughout the morning as the sun gradually starts to increase going into the afternoon. we're headed for 69 degrees today and all of this is well below what we typically see for early to mid-june and we're only going to reach about 77 in our warmest spots like morgan hill and fairfield. mostly 60s and low 70s today. tomorrow it's about the same as we'll see partly to mostly cloudy skies, temperatures in the low to mid-70s and 60s near the coastline. we talked about all the cloud cover we're seeing as the active weather continues across the region. once again, if you're going toward the central valley, you

may encounter showers and thunderstorms by early tomorrow morning. a lot of that doesn't make it into the bay area, but we're just watching out for slight rain chances going toward the end of the weekend. temperature-wise for concord, take a look at this. 70s through at least next thursday and then we only make it up to about 80 degrees where we do warm up next friday and saturday. so no warm-up in sight here. and we're also looking at morning temperatures staying mild in the mid to upper 50s and at times we will see clouds passing by, but overall fairly dry and sunny, extending into next week. mike, 680 through sunol, is that clear? >> from the overnight road work but not the weekend closure. we'll emphasize that over and over. northbound 680 is where the overnight closure happens. i see the live camera showing us lights heading toward the dublin interchange and there's more construction around san ramon that should be clear in the next couple of seconds. a volume build for 84 coming

"today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab joins us from our

newsroom. we're hearing from trump's attorney now. what's he saying? >> reporter: well, marcus and laura, as far as those charges are concerned, the details are limited because the indictment is still sealed, but trump's lawyer, he's already making a case for his client's innocence. the former president made the announcement on his social media platform truth social where he calls the case politically motivated. nbc news has confirmed at least one of the charges is related to the espionage act. others may include false statements and conspiracy to obstruct. this is a case that can take years to resolve, but independent special counsel jack smith running the investigation had originally convened a grand jury in washington. but that shifted to miami, florida, where the former president is expected to surrender on tuesday to a federal courthouse. now, in an interview this morning on the "today" show, trump's attorney confirming the former president will be in court on tuesday. he also took the opportunity to make his case to the public.

>> how can the president maintain he did nothing wrong? >> well, the starting point is up until the presidential records act, any former president could possess anything they want. that was just kind of the nature of the business. we've entrusted them under the constitution with the nation's secrets, so if they want to keep stuff, they can keep it. >> reporter: this is just one of several legal cases surrounding mr. trump. he's already been indicted on state charges of falsifying business records in new york. this has nothing to do with the january 6th insurrection. now, as far as those charges are concerned, even more details, espionage, which doesn't necessarily mean working with another country, can include or can involve willfully withholding classified documents. there could be substantial prison time if trump is found guilty of the charges. but as of now it's still a guessing game until the indictment is unsealed. all of this is unfolding just as the primary for the gop is

ramping up with donald trump as the clear front-runner. we'll also have more on the "today" show interview later this morning. >> thank you very much, ginger. now as for next tuesday in miami, legal analysts say what will happen inside the courtroom will most likely be uneventful, procedural. the former president will enter a plea and that's about it. outside the courthouse, that's another story. >> you can see behind me, and hopefully even in the dark of night you can see how large the plaza is. this is not like 500 pearl street, the federal courthouse in southern manhattan. there is an enormous public area here and there will be a lot of efforts to try and crowd control in anticipation of the arraignment next week. >> the u.s. secret service official told nbc news that secret service brass will meet with trump staff today to start talking about security and logistics. and former president trump and his lawyers are now pushing for a retrial in a separate

legal case against him. according to court documents, a jury awarded $5 million to writer e. jean carroll after finding mr. trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming her. trump's lawyer say the verdict was grossly excessive and he should either get a new trial or have to pay only $900,000 in damages. his lawyers have filed to appeal. and we will be following all of the legal fallout in the coming days. our website, nbcbayarea.com, is your great resource for those updates. just click on donald trump in the trending bar. there you'll find the latest news out of washington and florida. right now, the search is on for a suspect wanted in connection to an east bay freeway shooting. it happened on june 2nd on northbound 880 in oakland near high street. investigators say a mini-van was shot while traveling on the freeway. four people were in the car, but no one was injured. the victims told officers they

don't think it happened because of road rage. new details now, the oakland school district will not reverse its decision to cut some special education classes. the board voted earlier this week not to change its decision. it plans to move forward with cutting special education programs from six schools during the next two years. school leaders say 31 students with disabilities will be transferred to other schools. the board says the cuts were in an effort to save money as the district faces declining enrollment and a potential financial crisis. many parents say they were blindly sided by the decision. >> new details out of southern california, a judge now says the city of ventura was within its right to remove one of the statues from the city hall. now, this is all according to a san francisco chronicle. the statue was removed back in 2020 and relocated to the mission following backlash. many critics say serra was a

symbol of colonization and white supremacy. several have been taken down due to similar issues. happening this weekend, a major freeway closure in the east bay. caltrans is closing 680 in pleasanton between sunol boulevard and coopman road. caltrans crews will work to repave roads. closures start tonight at 10:00 and will last until monday at 4:00 a.m. northbound 680 will still be open. let's check in with mike inouye. you've got plans on how drivers can get around this construction. that's a major thoroughfare. >> it is a major section in the tri-valley. you might want to make plans to not go there at all. 880 is an alternate but you have to take this long ride around. if you're in this section coming out of the altamont or livermore, you might want to take 84. the speed sensors are just fine right now for the morning commute but tonight at 10:00

this section will be closed, the purple section from sunol boulevard down to coopman road. another big note, all weekend during the 55-hour closure, you're down to one lane for this stretch of 680, so that will slow you down as well. you can use 84 to get into this area, that's your alternate until they reopen. if it's done before monday morning, they will reopen early. they did last time. so we can keep our fingers crossed. another option is 24 off of 680 if you're coming from pleasant hill. that will get you to 880 as an alternate. we have nascar and there will be congestion for highway 37 around 121 and tonight the giants game. it's at 7:15, so there may be traffic after work. it's going to be a nice evening but very chilly. temperatures start out at first pitch only at 57 degrees and it's going to be windy. some of those gusts kicking up to 22 to 25 miles per hour, and

it does get even cooler as we go into the evening with more clouds rolling by. so just bundle up. now, we're also going to have the san mateo county fair happening. this is the last weekend and we'll see temperatures in the mid-60s for the middle of the day. but then cooling down into the upper 50s at 8:00 and 57 as we go into the night. also the foodieland night market will be happening at the santa clara county fairgrounds and that starts at 3:00. we're going to see temperatures milder at about 69 degrees at 4:00 and then a mix of sun and clouds. but overall a breezy and cloudy evening as it gets much cooler. the livermore rodeo also happening this weekend and only looking at temperatures in the upper 60s at noon and then reaching into the mid-70s for the middle of the day. peeks of sunshine there. in redwood city a car show happening this weekend downtown tomorrow, starting at 10:00 in the morning. it's going to be in the low 60s and mostly cloudy and also

bridge out of oakland. things are moving nicely. look at these cars, center lanes are starting to slow toward the left edge. metering lights have been activated and there are slow sensors up the incline. coming into the area, the eastshore freeway may have another crash. we'll check that out coming up. new this morning, florida governor ron desantis is facing criticism over how he's funding his 2024 presidential campaign. nbc news has learned that the governor's chief of staff worked with other state officials to accept donations from lobbyists. campaign finance experts say the problem is that the taxpayer funded staffers are raising money. usually a candidate's fundraising team is separate from government officials. desantis' communications director has defended his use of getting help from state employees. the governor will be in california for a fundraiser later this month. new details, windsor banning non-hosted short-term rentals

according to the "press democrat". non-hosted short-term rentals from rented for fewer than 30 days and the owner is not present. windsor has more than 100 short-term rentals with business licenses. the town council granted rental owners a two-year grace period to adjust. this comes as santa rosa will limit the number of short-term rentals an operator can own. a main road into yosemite that has been closed for six weeks reopens later this morning. a 200-foot long crack was discovered in the pavement the first week of may. park officials say it was a result of a landslide beneath the road. the federal highway administration says crews have been working seven days a week on that repair. big oak flat road opens at 7:00 this morning. currently the park has the strongest flow of waterfalls and rivers that it has seen in years with all that snowpack we got. let's take a live look outside on this friday morning at oracle park. the giants taking on the chicago

this is going to be a great weekend. there are several races, i understand, happening. what should fans who have never been before, what should they look forward to? >> well, they can look forward to a lot of great racing and a lot of great entertainment for themselves, for the whole family. so saturday we are packed with three races and qualifying for the nascar cup series, sunday is our headliner, something people can really look forward to is shaquille o'neal doing our pre-race concert, and our grand marshal is going to be adam devine. so we have great racing and lots of fun things for families to do. we have a great fan zone out here with a ferrous wheel, carnival games, things for the kids to do. and just so much to see here, with the three days packed full of racing friday, saturday and sunday. it's going to be a great time.

>> you said shaquille o'neal, the deejay, so pack your dancing shoes. the atmosphere is so joyous, i would imagine. i know you talked about some of the activities they can do. talk to me about the atmosphere out there. what is it like? >> oh, it's a huge party that we're throwing. it's electric. i mean, you can't help but get excited when you come in and see all of these colorful and set up and ready to put on a great show. and of course it's quiet right now. but in a few hours' time, engines are going to start revving and it's going to be nice and loud and exciting all friday, saturday and sunday. and so we're trying to make it also easy for people to access coming to the track. we have a new parking area located in our 50-acre campground across the street so people can get into the

across the bay area, reaching 71 in dublin and san mateo headed for 66 degrees, in san francisco today and tomorrow only 62 there, as we have a lot of pride and juneteenth events going on around the city. on sunday we're also going to continue to see the cool weather. so mostly cloudy, as quite a few showers and thunderstorms develop across the region. some of that making it into the central valley. most of it contained to the sierra and those upper elevations. if you are making plans to try to go to the beach sometime soon, it is june after all, take a look at half moon bay in the next ten days. we're in the upper 50s and low 60s, even into next weekend. so the cool weather continues near the coast, and for our inland areas mid to upper 70s through at least next thursday. mike, you're tracking a couple of issues throughout the bay area. >> in the east bay we have the metering lights on at the bay bridge, slowing on the incline but no problem at the toll plaza. it's a slow build, easier drive.
