forecast, coming off of that nice day yesterday, sunday. >> it was great. the weather has been so comfortable and you're still in your mind thinking, is this june? here is another thing that will have you questioning what month it is. we have a round of rain that's developing, moving into parts of the east bay, the peninsula, and we're also starting to see it develop over parts of san mateo county as we get a closer look. we can also see some of the spotty showers moving over there by the airport, sfo, and then also for the airport in oakland we're seeing it over the hills and extending toward berkeley. we'll continue to watch some spotty showers there in parts of the bay area, but most of us will be dry. it will be cloudy for the morning and then clear out and be a pleasant day. we'll talk about what's ahead in a few minutes. mike, it seems like it's monday light? >> it's pretty calm. in the south bay, the commute did kick in, typical, and it's easing a little.
6:02 am
in the east bay, typical slowing off the castro valley y and a new crash in the area. i wanted to show you the road weather index. most of the areas with light showers, not a problem. but this area where you see the build in the commute and we see the conditions, there may be some water on the roadway or damp roadways. the bay bridge toll plaza does have a backup. holding steady. there's gradual movement and good spacing between the cars. that means everything is all right as you approach the area, highway 37, highway 4, typical slowing for westbound commutes as well. over to you. >> thanks so much. happening now, redwood city say they need your help in finding this missing 14-year-old girl. investigators say gabby garcia was last seen yesterday along roosevelt avenue. police consider her at risk and they say right now she may be with her adult boyfriend. >> at this hour, san jose police searching for this missing man also considered to be at risk.
6:03 am
investigators say matthew lewis was last seen yesterday leaving a home along little orchard street. anyone who knows where either of these people are should call 911. in a few hours the oakland a's could face a curveball in their attempt to move to las vegas. >> bob redell joins us from the newsroom. nevada lawmakers are considering approving state tax dollars for a new ballpark. >> that is correct. in a few hours lawmakers in nevada will meet for a special session to consider sb1 that, if approved, would provide up to $380 million in public funding for the a's stadium along the vegas strip. they considered the bill last thursday but didn't vote on it. according to a local news report in las vegas, it is likely that lawmakers will present a new version of the bill today, one that has been amended to make it more palatable for legislators who are on the fence. it's not clear what the amendment will be. according to an opinion page on
6:04 am
the website for the state of nevada's legislature, 87% of respondents oppose this bill. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. breaking this morning, italy's longest serving political leader has died. silvio berlusconi served through the 1990s and 2000 area. he was a media tycoon who became the subject of several scandals over 40 years that divided the italian people. no official cause of death has been given but he had recently been treated for a lung infection tied to leukemia. he was 86 years old. this morning preparations are under way for former president donald trump's arraignment. trump is the first former president to ever be indicted on federal charges. he's expected to surrender himself to authorities in miami tomorrow. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning. so it's probably going to be a busy week. what do you think we can expect over the next several days?
6:05 am
>> reporter: good morning. so today former president trump is scheduled to travel from new jersey to florida before his arraignment in federal court on tuesday. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: former president trump heading to florida just one day before his historic appearance in a miami federal court. trump spent much of the weekend lashing out against the investigation into his handling of classified documents. >> the baseless indictment of me by the biden administration's weaponized department of injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country. >> reporter: special counsel jack smith unsealed a 37-count federal indictment against mr. trump, alleging he schemed to keep sensitive material, knowing many of the documents were classified. trump's own attorney general weighed in. >> i was shocked by the degree of sensitivity of these documents and how many there were, frankly.
6:06 am
>> on capitol hill, top republicans are defending trump. >> this is the most political thing i have ever seen. >> sadly, this is who he is and he feels the law applies to other people, it doesn't apply to him. >> reporter: potential voters are also divided over the current legal troubles. >> i think it is very biased. we've got other presidents that have taken material and they're not being treated the same way. >> i think at the end of the day we need to let this go through the justice system and not make it a political spectacle. >> reporter: the former president says he will plead not guilty. and former president trump vows to stay in the presidential race, even if he is convicted. >> big week ahead. thanks for the very latest. 6:06 right now. happening today, a detective with the oakland police department who allegedly lied under oath and attempted to bribe a witness will appear before a judge today. prosecutors say phong tran was
6:07 am
lead investigator in a 2011 murder case that led to a conviction of two men. investigators say that the officer also attempted to pay for key testimony in a case. in april, alameda county district attorney filed charges against that officer. tran has pleaded not guilty to the charges. the two defendants' convictions were vacated. also today, the former san francisco fire commissioner who was allegedly attacked is set to take the stand. garret doty is accused of using a metal object to attack former fire commissioner don carmignani back in april. carmignani is set to testify against doty this morning in court. the defense team says that carmignani actually started the incident and has a history of splaying homeless people with mace near his mother's home. carmignani denies those claims. in san francisco, a waymo driver assisted car accidently

hit and killed a dog that ran into the street. it happened last week near bernal heights. waymo says a test driver was in the car but did not see the animal. a company spokesperson says the system correctly identified the dog which ran out from behind a parked vehicle but was not able to avoid contact. we send our sincere condolences to the dog owner. we're taking a peek outside. the first full week for a lot of kids to be out of school. >> oh, yeah. >> they sleeping in? summertime, summertime. is it going to feel like summertime today, kari? >> not really. i think it feels like spring. we also have one last week of spring left before we officially start summer, and so we're seeing some mild weather across the bay area. temperatures in some spots even cooler than normal and we've had a little bit of rain here and there and the chance of showers continues up until tomorrow
6:09 am
morning. the rest of the week, it will be clear and we'll be warming up just a bit. don't be too surprised if you're driving to work and you encounter some rain or you're hearing it hitting the roof right now, especially in spots like oakland, it's just now starting to move out of that area and moving across the bay bridge around berkeley, emeryville seeing light showers right now. also up and down the peninsula, around san carlos and foster city we're seeing another cluster of showers developing over brentwood and antioch. so starting to see a little more activity here. but most of the day will be dry as we get a mix of sun and clouds. in sunnyvale, we're going from upper 50s to low 70s by early in the afternoon. so another really nice day. we'll talk about what else is coming our way in a few minutes. mike has a look at where you can find lower gas prices. >> the best on the board today, san jose's lowest, $4.19 at spartan gas on east taylor street.
6:10 am
next we have concord, national on clayton road with $4.29. in marin county, the low is $4.35 at lucky service on sir francis drake. that's the bottom line. thank you for reporting throughout the bay area for gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, a pretty typical monday drive. a little slowing across the bay bridge, made a little worse by a new crash reported near the fremont exit off of that bay bridge. we're going to see if it's affecting the off-ramp or lanes of the bridge. we'll have detail in the next couple of minutes. we have slowing highway 37 and highway 4. no surprises through contra costa county. the rising number of crashes involving tesla's autopilot technology. also, how the company is responding. >> plus, an unexpected discovery

martinez is at 58 degrees. you'll be in the upper 60s this afternoon. overall a comfortable day. we'll get a look at our microclimates coming up in a few minutes. from emeryville westbound, i was worried about the crash reported near the fremont street exit. everything is off to the shoulder and the backup has not really built in any unexpected way at the bay bridge on the oakland side. we'll track it coming up. >> thank you very much. wall street is set to open higher ahead of a big week of data on inflation and a two-day meeting by the federal reserve. the markets are coming off a positive week, the s&p 500 posted a fourth straight gain and touched its highest level since last august. investors will be focused on the may consumer price index, which comes out tomorrow and could show inflation continues to come down but still remains high. on wednesday we'll get the latest decision from the fed,
6:15 am
which is widely expected to hit the pause button after hiking interest rates for ten straight meetings. >> analysis finds a any hb of crashes from tesla's autopilot mode. they found there have been 736 crashes in the u.s. using the driver assistance technology since 2019. at least 17 people have died in those crashes. it is important to note that drivers have been beta testing the system on city streets. in february, a tesla driving on 680 in contra costa county crashed into a fire truck. the driver was killed and the passenger critically injured. four firefighters were also hurt. tesla has not responded, but has said in the past that autopilot should have the driver in control at all times. apple wants to have a less

expensive version of the headset. it comes out next year and starts at $3,500. bloomberg says apple could use a lower quality screen, a lower spec processer and a small number of cameras and sensors and even customers could use their own air pods for audio. that could knock off several hundred dollars on that price. trending this morning, one family in los angeles waking up to a shocking discovery. 1 million pennies, which they found while cleaning up a family member's home. >> they found them in a hidden crawl space. he thinks his wife's father stored the pennies to cap alize on the value of metal. the family tried to give the pennies to the bank but they said no. there were too many to fit in the vault. >> we had what we called a penny party. we started going through the process of looking at the
6:17 am
pennies and that quickly turned into we don't know what we're doing and then we decided to pop open a couple of beers and have those instead. >> you can do the math. the value is about $10,000 but the family said there could be a few collector's pennies as well and that could obviously boost the price. that's a lot to go through. you've got to know what you're looking for. >> i tried to take a lot of coins and i use to save them and they told me no, they said you have to wrap them individually in the little things. so i sat there one day and did that and took my money. it was, like, $128. >> wow. you would just throw the change in there. >> i did that for, like, six years. >> then you get to keep it all. coin star, i think they keep a portion. >> i didn't want to do that. >> i would have ended up cracking open a beer. too much. >> financial moments with
6:18 am
marcus. keep your money. >> i'll bring you much more later this week. let's get started this morning. as you're getting ready to make some money, heading off to work this morning, you may need a little bit of the windshield wipers turning on and a rain jacket. we're seeing some spotty showers starting to pop up here from some of that leftover energy from all the storms we've had developing over the sierra. and so now we're starting out with some wet weather as we're seeing it crossing the bay, heading from the east bay. it's going to be clearing from oakland in the next few minutes. now the rain is moving into san francisco. a little bit of a soggy start to the day in parts of the bay area, especially now that we're seeing the rain moving down the peninsula, around san carlos and redwood city, as well as brentwood, byron, antioch seeing light rain. in vallejo it is mostly cloudy, temperatures in the upper 50s, and then we'll start to see the sun peeking out around 11:00 to
6:19 am
12:00, and it's going to be another cool day. cool in comparison to what we typically see for early to mid-june. we'll be in the low 70s in hayward and san mateo and san francisco reaching 66 degrees. tomorrow it's slightly warmer for the inland valleys and that will be the trend as we go throughout the week. the low that's giving us the slight chance of rain moves away, high pressure builds and it's going to give us more of a northerly wind with a clockwise wind flow, as opposed to the ocean breeze, the westerly wind we've seen that's kept temperatures down. but then by the end of the week, things change again with a low that's dipping into the pacific northwest, that will give them rain. but around that counterclockwise wind flow, that will bring back the ocean breeze for us and cooler temperatures by sunday. so take a look at these temperatures for the next seven days. we're going from highs in the mid-70s today and tomorrow, to low 80s by the end of the week,
6:20 am
and the warmest day will be on saturday. then it's a little cooler and windy on sunday. san francisco still seeing 60s throughout the week, but it will be a little warmer for the end of the week. mike, you were following up on a crash on the bay bridge. >> i learned from chp that it is on the shoulder, which is good news. the bad news, it's just before you get to the fremont street exit and folks are jockeying, figuring out which exit they're going to use. that will slow folks up at the decline. they haven't slowed the metering lights but may start to before you get to treasure island. the rest of the east bay looks standard. we're seeing more slowing out of richmond. highway 37 slows around 121 and highway 4 holding steady. slower through pleasant hill and walnut creek. san leandro, this is important,
6:21 am
not the freeway but on the surface street, davis, overnight there was a deadly crash. the investigation was supposed to continue until 7:00, perhaps longer. davis street, you shouldn't use the on-ramp to 880. and locals will know the option, but if you're heading to the freeway from anywhere east of 880, use marina, not davis. there's a police investigation. in the south bay, things are movely smoothly. we're seeing that ramp up. no surprises out of morgan hill. everything is good. and highway 9, they're starting the closure for two weeks. you'll have to use an alternate. back to you. >> thank you. coming up next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> she says her gift card never left her drawer, so how did the balance drop to zero? i'monsumer c

welcome back. 6:23 right now. nbc bay area responds to a north bay viewer and her gift card headache. >> consumer investigator chris chmura's team went looking for that missing money. >> good morning. janet in napa wrote us, someone gave her clothes from nordstrom but they didn't fit. a worker couldn't do an exchange, so they issued janet a gift card for $58.86. that's the value of the item. she went to use it a few weeks later.
6:25 am
nordstrom told her the card had been used up, zero balance. used up a few days after she got it. janet spent lots of time on the phone with nordstrom reps but never got an answer for her 58 bucks. we reached out to nordstrom. nordstrom told us we looked into this further and we were able to resolve the issue. janet said the store mailed her a gift card for $58.86. we see so many cases where gift card balances disappear. it's often fraud. crooks act fast. so your best defense is acting faster. try to use your gift card quickly, before a scammer does. helping out viewers never goes out of style. snap the qr code on your screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. >> thanks so much. happening this morning, a new link opening up for north bay travelers headed to charles schultz airport in sonoma county.

trying to make it in the bay. the all new proposal that could reduce how much you pay. >> netflix password sharing crackdown seems to be working. could it lead to other streaming services following suit? we're diving deeper to get you answers. this is "today in the bay." very good monday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with a look at the forecast. coming off a great weekend. hopefully we will see a repeat today. >> the difference is we're seeing rain in parts of the bay area. so you're probably checking the calendar once again, and so we're going to see more spotty showers moving through the east bay, toward the peninsula, as we are once again tracking some very unusual weather moving into the bay area. we see some of the showers moving into san francisco and daly city and we're getting a cluster of rain from burlingame down to woodside and seeing the
6:32 am
rain starting to taper off there, but the roads may be wet as you move through. we're also seeing rain moving through brentwood and that's going to be pushing off to the east. that could soon be hitting 680. we're going to be talking more about this and what's ahead in the forecast. mike, you have a new hazard reported at the bay bridge. >> over here i'm watching carefully for this flow. there's some weird spacing going on here. look at this backup at the bay bridge. reports of a disabled vehicle somewhere in the toll plaza area. no lane specified. i couldn't pick it out from the live shot. it hasn't presented much of an additional backup. the bridge itself is moving smoothly. there's some recovery heading toward san francisco. i believe they have cleared that crash near fremont but i don't have that confirmation yet from chp. plan on a little delay getting toward san francisco. damp roadways both on the peninsula and the east bay sides
6:33 am
of the san mateo bridge. the bridge itself moves smoothly and it looks just fine. we'll watch kari's radar carefully as well. >> thank you very much. following a violent weekend across the bay area, police are asking for the public's help with their investigation. it comes after a standoff, two mass shootings and gunfire at a nightclub. >> ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco. ginger, what are police revealing about this? so much going on across the bay area. >> reporter: unfortunately, marcus, so much happened over the weekend. here in san francisco police are identifying a person of interest in one of two shootings that happened over the weekend. a police source confirms with nbc bay area that this man, javier campos, is a person of interest in the mass shooting that sent nine people to the hospital. that shooting happened friday night in the mission during a block party near 24th and harrison. campos is associated with a

mercedes spotted leaving the scene, california license plate 9bpt146. now, the other shooting happened saturday night in san francisco as well at statos nightclub on ocean avenue just before midnight. a fight allegedly broke out nightclub. there's no word from police about the suspect. we did reach out to the business for comment but have not heard back. in the east bay, a nearly five-hour standoff from deputies ended up in an arrest but not before shutting down the b.a.r.t. station for hours. they used teargas and k9s to bring the suspect into custody. officers spotted the suspect and chased him into oakland. there they were able to stop the car but it was very close to the b.a.r.t. coliseum platform at
6:35 am
75th avenue. one rider took this video. you can see teargas deploy, but that appeared to backfire when the wind blew the gas back toward police. >> they tried anything and everything, drones, they tried gas canisters that fired on themselves accidently, and, honestly, at this point they're just at a standoff. >> reporter: now, we heard from someone on the scene there. the standoff finally ended before 7:00 last night after shutting down the entire station for two hours. the suspect was then taken into custody. over in contra costa county, a deadly mass shooting in antioch left seven people shot. one of the victims an 18-year-old woman, died. you're looking at the aftermath of the birthday party where the shooting took place. the host did not want to go on camera but says three young men showed up to the party looking for someone she says she didn't know. one man was wearing a ski mask
6:36 am
and appeared to be intoxicated. the host tried to get them to leave but one went into the back yard, and shortly after gunshots. the mayor says his heart aches for the people involved, particularly for the one who lost her life. antioch police are still conducting their investigation, asking the public for any more information to contact them. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> really concerning. such a violent weekend across the bay area. thanks for the latest, ginger. 6:35 this morning. later today san francisco's african american reparations advisory committee are set to meet. so the committee is on its final stages of creating recommendations which will be passed on to san francisco leaders. the group has been working on these proposals for the last two years to find out how the descendants of enslaved people here in america should be compensated for generational harm. the committee found 82% of californians support the investment in education and
6:37 am
health care, 79% support assistance for housing and 74% support returning that property the committee was unfairly seized. today's meeting is at city hall and begins at 5:30. and b.a.r.t. is launching a new study looking into how police respond to fare evasion and if racial bias may play a role. search shows that black riders were stopped by transit agency police officers eight times more than white riders between 2012 and 2017, black riders were also 15 times more likely to have force used against them by those officers. the new study will be conducted by the center for policing equity and b.a.r.t.'s independent policy auditor. more help could be on the way for those trying to make it in the bay. a newly proposed bill would cap security deposits at one month's rent. right now california state law allows property owners to charge
6:38 am
up to two months rent and the initial lease payment for the security deposit. critics say this will hurt those who rent out the property. the bill has been passed by the sat assembly and needs to be considered by the senate. reddit communities are going dark in protest of the new pricing policy. now, this is a look at the bay area sub reddit, already grayed out and unavailable. now, today it's expected to be joined by thousands of other forums all because the company will start charging more for individual forms and sub reddits that use third-party apps. they say the app is limited, clunky and not accessible to people visually impaired. the blackout is set to last 48 hours. well, 6:38 right now. netflix more than doubled the average daily sign-ups recently and it has little to do with
6:39 am
what people want to watch. >> kris sanchez joins us with a password crackdown that i guess seems to be working. it has a lot of people talking. >> it was a gamble because when people heard that netflix was going to change sharing guidelines, they were mad, they said they would un-subscribe, cancel. it turns out that netflix called our bluff. netflix actually saw a 102% spike in subscriptions since it started emailing customers telling them that the crackdown was coming. and according to the data tracking company antenna, netflix saw four of its biggest days in more than four years. netflix estimates that 43% of households do share accounts globally. here is what the spike actually looked like. it was even higher than during the covid lockdowns when we didn't really have much else to do. cancellations did increase during this time but did not outpace the sign-ups. in case you missed it, netflix
6:40 am
was telling subscribers they could only share their accounts with people in their households, people they actually live with. the options are to pay $7.99 to keep a person outside the home on the account, like kids in college or maybe grandma, or transfer the profile so that other person then has to sign up on their own. while a lot of streaming services might be watching to see if the crackdown will boost revenue, other streaming services might be seeing this as an opportunity to boost their subscribers. >> you're going to see these other streamers, their prices are going to go lower and lower to compete with netflix. >> so netflix tracks, as you may know, because we live in silicon valley, they track ip addresses and device ids and account activity to determine who is actually in the household. >> and who is connecting from where. >> exactly. >> which is funny. i didn't think about it happening over the weekend because i got a text from my daughter downstairs saying what's the netflix password.
6:41 am
and i thought it was already signed up. i guess they're making sure. >> we might see some of those prices for some of the other streaming services drop. there's certain sites where you're, like, i watch one show, so maybe i'll let it go. but they're like, hey, if we drop the price, maybe you keep it anyway. >> some of them should do -- if you say, you know what, i can afford to pay for the whole subscription for a year, it should come with a discount. >> you're saying if you pay up front. >> yeah, up front. >> i like the idea of a bundle. maybe if it wasn't wireless, it was cable. >> come back to cable. >> we're streaming on roku. >> we're everywhere. >> we're free at nbcbayarea.com. >> that's right. many streaming platforms. we're here for you always, and even on a monday morning.
6:42 am
>> early on a monday morning. >> if you're hearing some rain right now hitting the roof, you might want to just roll over. >> keep the tv on. >> how long is it going to stick around? >> it will be off and on. we're seeing a little rain coming through this morning. we have a chance of rain through tomorrow morning and then after that we're going to see things clearing out and warming up. not everyone will see those showers, but it has started to pick up quite a bit here in the last hour, as we've seen some rain moving through the east bay and toward the peninsula. and it's been spotty once again, so we'll continue to watch that. other than seeing a chance of rain, it's going to be partly cloudy and overall a nice day with highs reaching into the mid to upper 70s. in the low 70s for much of the peninsula and mid-60s for san francisco. we'll talk about changes ahead. mike, a couple of issues on the bay bridge. >> it's still on the chp grid, although the slowing has cleared
6:43 am
up near the fremont street exit. the hazard at the toll plaza hasn't shown any problems, although chp said they located a disabled vehicle as you're approaching on the right side. meanwhile, the eastshore freeway shows a little more slowing and this green highlighting, kari is talking about light rain through some of the areas, farther south through san leandro as well. there might be activity on the lower deck of the bridge. i saw that pop up on the reports. i'll check with chp. meanwhile, looking ahead, we know there's a lot going on here at the coliseum complex. we have the a's playing tonight at 6:40, just after that and probably overlapping with the crowds arriving, we have a 7:30 concert at the oakland arena. so dual events just off the nimitz. that will cause more slowing. and slowing for 101 and 87 into san jose. back to you. 6:43 right now.
