but we have a layer of clouds overhead. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, our temperatures will be mild as you're heading out, and in san jose it is 57 degrees, light southerly wind. today we're going to see a lot of sunshine and we're back to the mild weather, with highs in the upper 70s, very much like it was yesterday afternoon. we'll get a look ahead to the rest of the week coming up. mike, there was an alert earlier in fremont. >> there was. that cleared and so did all the activity. one lane, then all four lanes reopened. no slowing past the scene. that's great for south 680 approaching mission boulevard. full recovery. then we heard about traffic breaks going on on the northbound side, crews are supposed to clear. there are construction crews reported around koopman in the process of clearing. back to you. >> thank you so much. we are following breaking news just coming into our

newsroom. police in denver are investigating an overnight shooting that injured at least nine people. so this all started with some type of fight in the downtown area, as thousands of nuggets fans celebrated the nba championship win. the nuggets beat the miami heat miles away from the shooting. three people are in critical condition. the other victims are expected to be okay. officers took a suspect into custody who had also been shot. a historic day today, as former president donald trump will be arraigned in a federal courthouse in miami. he is the first former president to face federal charges. extreme security measures are in place ahead of his court appearance. >> brie jackson joins us live in washington. in doubt, this will affect trump's 2024 presidential campaign. >> reporter: certainly. good morning, marcus, laura. so this federal case holds legal and political implications for former president donald trump,

who continues to remain the gop front-runner. former president trump airing his grievances about the 37-count indictment he's expected to plead not guilty to in federal court today. >> there's no criminality here, it's ridiculous. these people, look, they're using it as election interference. >> the special counsel's investigation alleges that trump knowingly mishandled classified documents after leaving office. mr. trump claims the case is an attempt to interfere with his chances of winning the 2024 presidential election. his gop challengers weighed in. >> i'm convinced that if he goes back to the white house that the next four years will all be about him just settling scores. >> if this indictment is true, if what it says is actually the case, president trump was incredibly reckless with our national security. >> this case is a serious case with serious allegations, but in

president trump. our website, nbcbayarea.com, is a great resource for updates. today's arraignment is expected to get under way around 10:00 this morning. nbc's lester holt is in miami and will have live coverage ahead right here on nbc bay area. a's fans are fighting back trying to keep their beloved baseball team in oakland. >> later tonight fans are hosting a boycott of sorts, this comes as the team is proposing a new ballpark at the las vegas strip. bob redell is joining us now. what are fans saying about this? they're not happy about that move. >> reporter: they're not. the oakland a's fan group are calling for a reverse boycott at tonight's game at the coliseum, which you can see from one of our live cameras. the goal is to fill the stadium tonight to send a message to the owner and manager of the team, sell the team to someone who wants to keep the a's in oakland. the team has announced plans to move to a new stadium that would

be built on the las vegas strip. right now lawmakers in nevada are considering a bill that would provide $380 million in taxpayer money to help pay for the new ballpark. the oakland fan booster club has raised $35,000 to give away free t-shirts at tonight's game with the word "sell" printed on them, a direct message to john fisher. >> john fisher is not going to wake up wednesday morning and slap himself in the head and say, what was i thinking? we know that's not going to happen. all we want to do is raise awareness that there are a's fans. >> it breaks my heart and it's not right. the owners, they own the team, i guess, but they don't own the community of oakland a's fans. >> reporter: the oakland a's have so far refused to comment on tonight's reverse boycott. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob.

5:07 right now. many in san francisco took time to honor victims of one of the deadliest shootings in u.s. history. yesterday marked seven years since a gunman took the lives of 49 people inside of pulse nightclub in orlando. 53 people were wounded in that shooting. last night people gathered in the castro district. christopher vazquez says he wants to see leaders push back on governments where lgbtq rights are under attack. >> now is the time for states like california to stand up and be, like, we're not going to let our fellow americans, fellow humans deal with that. >> several san francisco district super viruses and state senator scott wiener shared words of support at that memorial. in the north bay, an investigation is unfolding after several businesses were targeted in a series of hate crimes. santa rosa police say the businesses were covered in stickers which contained hateful

rhetoric. officers were notified about the incidents on sunday. we're told most of the businesses are owned by members or supporters of the lgbtq+ community. so far, no arrests have been made. happening today, alameda county supervisors are introduce a new ordinance aimed at cracking down on side shows. this comes as we continue to see the increase in illegal side shows across the bay area. now, the proposal would punish people who come to watch the side shows and street races. if approved, violators would face up to a $1,000 fine and six months in jail. this comes after the city of oakland recently passed a similar ordinance last month. wow, traffic picking up out there. we'll check the commute with mike in just moments. let's talk about the weather. kari is tracking our tuesday morning forecast. >> we're getting started with a fairly mild morning across the bay area, also a few clouds. as we get a look ahead in gilroy, we're starting out cloudy, temperatures in the

mid-50s, and then as we go into today we'll see it clearing out, mostly sunny skies by noon and 67 degrees. it's going to be very much like it was yesterday, but much more sunshine, and we're going to see some of our inland valleys a little bit warmer, like morgan hill reaching 79 and 77 in concord. so we'll talk about more changes ahead in our forecast in just a few minutes. i'm seeing numbers go up, mike. hopefully you're not. we're trying not to. they are still going up, kari, i'm sorry to report. the best price in the south bay is now $4.19 a gallon, but fewer of those reported. a shout out to cupertino car wash on north de anza boulevard. $4.25 on harter road in hayward. san francisco city and county, nothing below $4.59 a gallon. we'll mention speedway express on 19th avenue, all coming in through gasbuddy.com.

things could get better today. we get the latest inflation numbers in about 15 minutes. those numbers expected to be good. inflation is getting better. it's about half of what it was in its all-time highs a year ago. reassuring inflation numbers may convince the fed to ease up on interest rate hikes. the federal open markets committee starts a two-day interest rate meeting today and announces its decision around 11:00 a.m. our time tomorrow. they may be making sort of a last-minute decision on that based on the numbers. >> fox news has demanded tucker carlson stop publishing his tucker on twitter videos. fox fired tucker back in april. carlson's lawyer says he will not be silenced by anyone. fox says carlson signed an agreement limiting his ability to appear on other platforms.

>> and the hollywood foreign press association, the group that puts on the golden globes, is shutting down. it was a very controversial group, getting into trouble for lack of diversity, its sometimes odd choices about who wins. the show, of course, will go on. it always has to. the award show was sold to dick clark productions, which has been producing the show for years now. the nbc quit showing it last year but returned it this year. i assume we will run it again this coming year. but, again, the hollywood foreign press association will have no part in it. we're not exactly clear who is going to be nominating or voting on these sort of things. >> interesting. they're always a precursor to the oscars. thanks, scott. chocolate lovers, are you ready for this? soon you could experience a bitter aftertaste. prices of chocolate are up 14% in the past year, according to

nielson iq. they could rise further due to lower supplies of cocoa. to make matters worse, the el nino weather phenomenon is forecast to bring bad weather. economists are thanking taylor swift. >> her tour is making a huge boost in the u.s. economy. ♪♪ ♪ we'll take this way too far ♪ >> yeah, so that new report from fortune finds that the tour could generate $4.6 billion for the economy. on average, swifties are spending around $1,300 to attend a taylor swift concert. that includes spending on those tickets, flights, outfits, and when the tour stops in las vegas, tourism rates spiked to pre-covid levels.

[ laughter ] >> so, yeah, that's really interesting. let's talk about some interesting weather. >> is this the same weather that taylor had? >> wow. this is the same rain that fell on taylor swift. so we are going to see some of this activity starting to wind down. it's been so busy here the past few days, after we've seen the storms develop over the upper elevations, and as it moves into the bay area. but there were a few isolated showers that made it into the north bay, as well as the east bay yesterday afternoon. today we're looking at much more sunshine, temperatures in the

upper 70s for much of the south bay, with san jose reaching 77 degrees. we'll see a high of 76 in milpitas, also 76 in pleasanton. oakland reaching 69 today and 70 in vallejo, half moon bay looking at a high temperature there of 64 degrees. 72 in redwood city. for san francisco, we're in the mid-60s downtown and in the mission district. marina district is still in the upper 50s today and novato reaching 73, while clear lake will hit a high of 82 degrees. so really starting to warm up farther to the north as we are also checking out the sierra snowpack. this is still a thing. if you haven't been there lately, you can see all of the snow in those upper elevations, and for the southern sierra it is nearly 500% of its normal amount. it's been melting, so how much more is there to melt? well, since april 1st, we've melted about half of the snow

that's there. so there's still a lot more to go. it's filling up the reservoirs and a lot of them are already at or above capacity, like lake oroville is 100% full, but trinity lake is continuing to go up. so overall we're seeing the four largest reservoirs that do rely on snowmelt on average about 83.5% of capacity, for the bay area we are also seeing them run pretty high, at least 93%. we are going to continue to see things dry for the next few days and our temperatures staying nice and mild. take a look at walnut creek. we're going to stay in the 70s, at least through monday. i'll be tracking that. >> mike, you have more on the roadside fire. >> this is in san jose. we showed you 101, 280, 680, the interchange. as we zoom in for detail, it does require the san jose fire department to close down the on-ramp -- or the off-ramp at story road.

where we were yesterday, mostly mid to upper 70s for the inland valleys and 60s near the coast. mike, you're tracking some traffic breaks right now. >> no surprise for the tri-valley, northbound 680. the sensors just changed from orange to yellow. speeds are improving. i believe the traffic break from bernal to the dublin interchange, as well as the one approaching highway 84, both are clearing as the construction finally is completely clearing through the area. we're looking at a smooth drive for the rest of the bay. taking a look at the bay bridge, good volume of traffic heading across the span. we should see the metering lights turn on in the next five minutes. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we are following breaking news in san francisco. police are investigating an apparent deadly double shooting in the tenderloin. it happened four hours ago. police told our photographer on the scene one of two peopledied

at the scene. there's no confirmation on any arrests. the shooting just blocks away from westfield mall, and safety is among the reasons many big retailers have been pulling out of the city, and westfield is just the latest departure. >> ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco this morning, and this is another shakeup that we're seeing here, ginger. surprising, but not so much as well. >> reporter: well, that's right. and that's actually right in line with what a lot of people are saying, surprising, some not so surprised with this latest move. some are keeping that positive outlook saying this could be the sign of a new beginning, while others are saying this is a sign of a crisis in downtown san francisco. in a statement, westfield pointing to the city's challenging operating conditions as the reason behind the decline in sales, occupancy, foot traffic, and their decision to transfer management of the shopping center to the lender. sales in the san francisco

location dropped from $455 million in 2019 to just under $300 million last year. while in the south bay, the retailer says westfield valley fair saw a 66% increase in sales. now, westfield's announcement lading to a list of stores abandoning ship downtown, including old navy, coco republic, and most recently nordstrom. mayor london breed says this move has been in the works for some time and mentioned in a statement with new management they'll have the opportunity to pursue a new vision for the space that focuses on the future of downtown san francisco can be. she added she has had numerous talks with westfield about the future of the site and it's been clear they did not have a long-term commitment to san francisco as they looked to withdraw entirely from the united states market. but supervisor matt dorsey says the city needs to address a bigger problem first. >> there's also factors that we can control and they include things like street conditions,

homelessness, public drug use and dealing. there's things that san francisco has to do a better job of addressing, and i think the only way we're going to be able to do that is with a fully staffed police department. >> reporter: now, going back to that big question what is next, the stores inside the mall will remain open despite the shift in management. mayor breed has pointed to the opportunity or the possibility of this space being used for some educational institutions to expand, but with the lease more than two dozen retailers leaving san francisco since 2020, the question doesn't seem to be what's next on some people's mind. it seems to be who is next. and unfortunately we don't know who that is going to be. but a lot of people hoping that it ends here, marcus and laura. >> it's just so shocking. i remember being there when it opened. they had a grand opening and the escalators were so exciting.

now to see this. >> we're actually seeing this, it's almost weekly there's another business -- >> that's going out. >> ginger conejero saab this morning, thank you so much for that. for the second time in just a little more than two months, former president donald trump making his first appearance in court to answer criminal charges. >> scott mcgrew is with us now and the federal charges are much more serious than he actually faces in manhattan. >> right. and the case is stronger, marcus. in their indictment, federal prosecutors say they have trump on tape speaking about one of the crimes that they're alleging, that trump had critical classified documents that he knew he wasn't supposed to have, he knew they were classified, yet showed them to people who should not have seen them. he'll make his first appearance in miami later this morning. today's appearance will be different than the one in april in manhattan, where trump faces separate criminal charges over

hush money payments. first of all, there will be no pictures inside the courtroom like there were here. federal court does not allow it. second, we may see a different kind of crowd outside the courthouse. in manhattan this crowd seemed to be mostly just curious bystanders. there was a contingent of trump supporters, but florida may see more of them. now, from a legal standpoint, this is trump's first appearance, which normally would not include a plea, just an explanation of the charges. but trump has seen the charges, so we expect an arraignment as well where he pleased guilty or not guilty. one big question, what will trump's legal team look like? he's had lawyers quit on him recently, other lawyers testify against him, apparently. the case has been assigned to judge aileen cannon, the same judge who made so many legal decisions in trump's favor back in the early days of the case. that's why she got this new case. but she's not expected to handle

today's first appearance. that's generally handled by a magistrate. trump faces 37 felony counts related to the documents. the feds allege he willfully held onto documents he was not supposed to have, he lied about them, hid them when the feds asked for them back nicely and then with a subpoena. ultimately the fbi had to go in and get the documents that trump and his lawyers said they didn't have. chris christie was on cnn last night as part of a pre scheduled town hall and christie, who is a former u.s. attorney himself, a federal prosecutor, summed up the case like this. >> it is a very tight, very detailed evidence-laden indictment, and the conduct in there is awful. put aside taking the documents in the first place, but then when you start getting asked, anderson, in may of '21, nicely, with a letter from the

archivists saying could you please give it back, and you ignore it, ignore it, ignore it. then they come with a grand jury subpoena, and then according to the dime, you tell your lawyers, tell them we don't have anything, even though you have dozens and dozens of boxes of material. that's obstruction of justice, if it's true. >> trump's first appearance will be expected to get under way sometime around 10:00 this morning. of course nbc's lester holt in miami tracking all the unfolding events. we'll have full live coverage coming up right here on nbc bay area. >> thank you very much, scott. 5:39 right now. happening today, the man accused of stabbing former tech executive bob lee returns to court. i.t. consultant nima momeni is charged with murder. he is due in court for a hearing and it will be the first time he appears with his new lawyer. momeni recently has decided to part ways with his defense

attorney and has hired a miami-based lawyer instead. in the meantime, the case involving the attack of a former fire commissioner also continues today. don carmignani will appear in court to sf against garret doty. doty is accused of attacking carmignani in april with a metal object. the lawyer for doty says it was a case of self-defense and is accusing carmignani of having a history of spraying unhoused people with mace. carmignani denies those accusations. happening today, first lady jill biden is visiting the bay area. dr. biden is set to speak in san francisco at three events. two of the events are receptions for president biden's re-election campaign, and then later tonight she is the featured speaker at gifford's law center. gifford's law center is a gun control research and advocacy group. tomorrow the first lady will head south to los angeles for more campaign events. then next week, president joe

biden will visit the bay area. let's take a peek outside on your tuesday morning. at least you can make out trans america pyramid and the buildings there. kari has a look at our forecast. how is the weather going to be for the first lady's visit? >> great. it's starting out with clear visibility at least at the ground level, but we are not seeing the sun rising at that marine layer slides in. that's going to keep temperatures down. as you're stepping out the door, it's in the mid to upper 50s and heading to work in mountain view it's going to be a mostly cloudy morning. starting out with some mid to upper 50s, but then as it clears out, it is going to be so nice and comfortable, reaching 75 degrees there in mountain view and 77 in livermore, 73 today in napa. so we'll take a look ahead to the rest of the week coming up in a few minutes. mike, you were watching out for metering lights. >> we saw the signs that they were activated and we got confirmation from chp and the backup is forming right on schedule gradually this tuesday

coming up. >> we're looking at a nice drive through san rafael, taillights heading down to lincoln. that's your commute direction with those taillights. easy drive for the north bay. looking at the build for the east bay, a crash on the upper eastshore freeway. we'll short that out next coming up. governor gavin newsom says that he has a plan to address homelessness here in california. >> he spoke to fox news' sean hannity last night. they covered a range of topics from immigration to the 2024 campaign election. california's homelessness crisis sparked a big conversation. as of right now, more than 171,000 are unhoused in california. in some cities, that number is growing rapidly. in san diego county, people who are unhoused, the percentage jumped 22% from just the year before. it's a record high for that county. governor newsom says he's dedicated to finding a solution. >> the state has not made

progress in the last two decades as it relates to homelessness. >> why? >> because housing costs are too high, our regulatory thickets are too problematic, localism has been too impactful, meaning people locally are pushing back against new housing starts and construction. >> newsom says he wants to sue cities that don't have enough affordable housing. the state is planning to deliver 1,200 tiny homes to large cities with some headed to san diego. happening today, many in the bay area are celebrating nurses. they are set to take part in a nationwide day of action. they're hoping to bring attention to what they call a staffing crisis. registered nurses with national nurses unite will lead the demonstration. at least four hospitals in the bay area will hold demonstrations. that includes two kaiser medical centers and the ucsf benioff childrens' hospital. we reached out for comment but

have not heard back. when it comes to making it in the bay, home prices are up as inventory plunges to its lowest level in decades. this is according to a new report by compass. it shows in san mateo county, the median for a home is edging close to $2 million, which is the highest in the bay area. median prices on the peninsula were $1.93 million in may. prices are up for san francisco homes at about $1.63 million. as local real estate agent john and leslie foster explain, the market is slow at this point. >> interest rates are a little higher, that's causing a lot of sellers to not list their home for sale because 85% of sellers are also buyers and they don't want to trade their 2.5% rate for a 7.5% interest rate. it's understandable. it's also caused some buyers to lose affordability or buying power. >> but the fosters say that now is a great time to research

area. today we are going to see much more sunshine. take a look at these high temperatures are cupertino reaching 76, and 79 in morgan hill and east san jose, and then for the east bay we're going to see mid-70s in walnut creek, while oak will reach a high of 69 degrees. and 71 in san mateo, the coastal areas in the mid-60s. san francisco reaching 65 downtown and in the mission district, and for the north bay napa reaching 83 degrees. we'll see a high of 84 in ukiah today. so let's head to the sierra. we've been talking about all the storms there and this is the current sierra snowpack, for the southern sierra it is nearly 500% of its normal amount. how much more it will melt? we've melted about half since april 1st, so there's still a lot more to go and it's continuing to fill up our reservoirs. some are at or above capacity, but right now we're at 83% of capacity for the bay area.

those reservoirs are in the 90% to 97% range. as we go through the next few days it is looking dry, but high pressure is going to warm up those temperatures and we'll be tracking that heading into the weekend. mike, you've got a crash on the eastshore freeway. >> i was concerned, eastshore freeway at cutting boulevard, toward richmond, bad timing. it cleared to the shoulder and there's no disturbance as you're traveling toward the bay bridge. the rest of the bay looks standard. san jose commute starts again for 101. back to you. >> thank you so much. san carlos is welcoming a new police chief. mike meyers is taking over the department. he is a 22-year veteran of the san mateo sheriff's office. as a deputy he had many roles, including a field training officer and s.w.a.t. team member. in a statement, he said he is honored to accept the new position. all the winter storms were go for the drought but it may have caused some problems with california's crops.

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." now to our climate in crisis. the deluge of atmospheric rivers we had this past winter could be creating a path for diseases to infect some of california's cropland. plant pathologists with uc davis recently visited an orchard in lodi and noticed a gum substance on different parts of the trees. this indicated that a pathogen had taken hold of the tree. the tree doctor with uc davis

says what's interesting about this was the last time this pathogen hit california was in the 1990s after a series of el nino influenced storms. >> in the almond orchards, when we see the gumming of the base of a tree, it is likely that this infection will kill the bark, kill the wood, and then kill the trees, cause the entire tree to die. >> he says the intense storms have created the right conditions for the pathogen to basically swim up to the tree trunks as strong winds blew the spores into the air and rain dropped them back down into the canopy. this team has taken bark back to the lab for testing to find out just how bad the trees got infected and if they have a fighting chance. you can read more on the research and similar stories on our website on nbcbayarea.com on the climate in crisis tab.

well, june is pride month and nbc bay area is celebrating people making a mark in the lgbtq+ community. and this morning we are shining a light on a woman trying to expand access to the sport archery. >> kendall tick ner's love for the sport has gone viral with her sharp-shooting videos on tiktok. oftentimes she says it can be intimidating to get involved. realizes there were others like here in the lgbtq+ community who wanted to learn the sport, minus the hunting, she created a company called wild captive. >> what does it say about our society today that an openly gay woman, young, can start a business and it can be embraced by all sorts of people? >> yeah, it's nice, actually. some of the comments and messages i get make me cry and make it all worth it. >> she adds her ultimate goal is to create a space to help people
