5:02 am
usual morning, it feels mild, it's mostly cloudy. as we go into today we're going to see it clearing out. as we get a look at our forecast for napa, we're headed from 55 degrees to about 70 degrees as we go into late morning into the early afternoon. here is a look at our high temperatures today, with napa reaching 73 degrees, in martinez expect it to reach 75 degrees, and we'll see temperatures in the upper 70s in san jose, morgan hill reaching 80 degrees, and for livermore up to 81. take a look at tomorrow's high temperatures, reaching up to 82 in livermore. you can see it does get slightly warmer for the inland valleys but not much of a change for the coastline. cinthia has a look at this morning's commute. >> still pretty smooth, 5:02 this wednesday morning. we're seeing the typical build down 84 as people make their way from sunol down into parts of fremont. we've got the typical slow and

go from grant line in tracee as other people are making their way into other parts of the bay. other parts of the bay still smooth, but people choose this day to go into the office. i'm going to keep an eye on daly city and report back to you in a couple of minutes. we are following some breaking news this morning, just into our newsroom. an apparent deadly investigation, a shooting investigation is under way in san leandro. it happened around 9:00 last night at the garden apartments near washington avenue off 880. police found two people shot. both were taken to the hospital. a witness telling our photographer at the scene that his 17-year-old grandson was shot and killed. we're awaiting more information from police. flights are resuming once again at sfo, but this comes after that power outage causing
5:04 am
flights to be delayed or diverted. >> it certainly had an impact. ginger conejero saab is live at the airport this morning. i know it's frustrating for a lot of travelers there. do you know if the morning is any better now? >> reporter: well, laura and marcus, so far, so good it seems here at sfo. last night a big scramble because of the outage, baut this morning is faa is not reporting any delays so far. you can see behind us your typical morning scene outside the airport here. the outage itself last night didn't last very long, it started around 8:30 and lasted until just about 10:00. but the scramble that it created, that was felt into the night. let's take a look at what that looked like inside one of the terminals. here is some video from what it seemed like was a very dark scene inside the terminal last night, bringing things to quite a standstill. in the video you can see some lights are on, but the monitors are dark.
5:05 am
some passengers taking to twitter to express their frustration over what was going on. one person saying passengers on an air canada flight were on ground for more than two hours after landing. another person saying they were told they were waiting because there was no gate assignment. some flights were diverted to san jose, other flights were canceled altogether, including a flight to north carolina. now, this family from menlo park has plans to fly to their new home in south carolina. >> my family is here and they're moving across country tonight, and we came to the airport and everything was just shut down and the power was out, and fortunately the power came back on and now things are moving. but we're about at the point where we're close to missing our flight. >> reporter: that's really the hope of passengers, to keep things moving in case they were affected by the delays or the cancellations last night. but so far here things are
5:06 am
looking good once again. we reached out to sfo to find out what the cause of that outage was, have not heard back yet. we'll try to get that information to you guys later on in the morning. >> we'll check back with you, ginger. this morning we are learning more about an overnight fire in the east bay. it happened in albany on cleveland avenue between 80 and 580 near golden gate field. we're told it was a pallet fire at a lumber company. the fire is now out. the cause is still unclear. former president donald trump is back in new jersey this morning, after pleading not guilty to federal charges. mr. trump was arrested and arraigned in miami, florida, yesterday. brie jackson is in washington this morning for us. what's been the reaction from the former president? i know he had an event later in the evening. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, marcus. so a defiant former president donald trump addressed his supporters at his new jersey
5:07 am
golf club. he did not use the speech to deny having the classified documents and he did not deny the obstruction of justice charges against him. former president trump addressed supporters after entering a not guilty plea in federal court. >> this day will go down in infamy. >> reporter: prosecutors allege that trump mishandled and schemed to hold onto classified documents. he faces 37 felony counts. >> charging a former president of the united states under the espionage act of 1917. >> reporter: the historic arraignment drew crowds of opponents and supporters. [ crowd chanting ] >> reporter: during a quick stop at a cuban restaurant, some sang "happy birthday" to the former president. he turns 77 today. others sang his praises outside
5:08 am
the federal courthouse. >> he can run from his jail cell. if he does, he still will win. >> reporter: on the campaign trail, his former running mate turned 2024 challenger, mike pence, is among those raising concerns. >> i can't defend what's alleged. these are serious allegations. >> reporter: senate minority leader mitch mcconnell avoided questions about trump's indictment and says he wants to stay out of the 2024 race. >> i'm not going to start commenting on the various candidates we have running for president. there are a lot of them. it's going to be interesting to watch. >> reporter: people across the world are watching and waiting to see how the legal cases against the now twice indicted former president play out. and judge aileen cannon, a trump-a pointed judge, has been assigned to oversee this trial. >> a lot to follow, brie. there's also someone else facing some charges connected with all the classified documents there,
5:09 am
right? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. so walt nauta is a codefendant, he's a personal aide to former president donald trump. in the indictment he was named as a co-conspirator. he was alongside former president trump during yesterday's hearing but was not arraigned because he did not have a local attorney. but he is expected to be back in court later this month. >> brie jackson in washington, giving us the update on what's going on. a lot to keep up with. thank you so much. 5:08. happening today, the man accused of attacking paul pelosi inside his san francisco home is due back in court. david depape is accused of breaking into pelosi's home and attacking pelosi's husband with a hammer last october. depape has pleaded not guilty to charges. he had a hearing in april and his public defender requested more time to prepare for the case. depape's federal trial is set to start in october but we don't know where that trial will take
5:10 am
place. a's fans by the thousands delivering an emotional message to ownership. [ cheers and applause ] >> they are hoping the team stays in oakland and ownership sells it to someone else. during last night's game at the coliseum, they held what organizers called a reverse boycott, amidst concerns the deal to move the team to vegas is getting closer. it may be because nevada lawmakers yesterday cleared another major hurdle, however that did not stop nearly 28,000 fans from packing the park last night. our bob redell is following the story this morning. at 5:30 he'll have the latest response from oakland leaders and what comes next for the team's proposal. we take a live look outside in san jose as the sun is trying to get up this morning. so are we. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that forecast. i know you're up and ready to go. how is that forecast looking? >> we've got the marine layer,
5:11 am
those clouds sliding in. it's going to block our view of the sunrise. in palo alto we are going to have a mostly cloudy start to our day and temperatures in the upper 50s. our typical start for our morning, with mostly mid to upper 50s around the bay area, cool morning but also going to see the sky clearing out and temperatures going from upper 50s to upper 60s at noon. and you'll notice that later on today it's going to be just a little bit warmer compared to yesterday, as we see temperatures reaching 77 in mountain view, about the same in fremont, and in fairfield reaching 81 degrees. also 81 in livermore. tomorrow we see temperatures going up another degree or two, so it's not a major change that we're going to see. but some of our valleys will feel a little bit more like this last week of spring as we head into the first week of summer. so we'll talk more about that coming up. cinthia has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> a lot of people want to get
5:12 am
away. now, these numbers are thanks to the drivers who report them to gasbuddy.com. thank you for being our eyes out there on the road. on the peninsula, $4.39, that's at the arco on south delaware street. so good luck getting that price out there. across from the peninsula and into the valley we have $4.29 at the safeway on 1st street in livermore. the cheapest i could find this morning was the great gas in san pablo coming in at $4.19. from the pump to what's going on on the roadways, let's take a look at the traffic maps. still a little slow and go making your way from the tri-valley into parts of the bay area. but i am looking at this stalled vehicle that's on southbound 280 just around the lake merced golf course out there, south of john daly boulevard. silicon valley looks good at this hour. still green on the sensors. and we'll track the build on the bay bridge in about 20 minutes.
5:13 am
back to you. >> thanks, cinthia. ahead on "today in the bay," the way one bay area author is helping to unite our lgbtq+ community one page at a time. >> and hitting pause. we expect the fed to announce today no new interest rate hikes for the first time in 15 months. for the first time in 15 months. yore watching "today in u'th flexex alert! flflex alert!!

it is 5:15 on your wednesday morning. let's head to oakland with a live look outside. we are seeing some low clouds that are going to linger here and that's going to keep those temperatures down. so a cool start to the day and we'll see the sun a little bit more often into the afternoon, as we head for the upper 60s in oakland. we'll get a look at the rest of our microclimates and a slight warming trend in a few minutes. and from a slight warming trend to a slight uptick in traffic here as we see the headlights go over the san mateo bridge. no problems to report on either side of the bridge this morning. just about 12 minutes to make it across the span. richmond bridge and bay bridge both under ten minutes. we'll take a look at more traffic updates in a bit. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the markets are very happy. we'll get to why in a second. the eu just accused google of breaching antitrust rules in its advertising business.
5:17 am
nvidia, the share price of nvidia closed at an all-time high. if you add all of these shares together, you get the value of the company, over a trillion dollars. nvidia becomes the seventh american company to reach that marker. >> the big deal today is the fed. the open markets committee will announce its decision on interest rates at 11:00 a.m. our time and we expect the fed will had hit pause. the inflation numbers yesterday showed inflation had fallen by half, very encouraging news. we expect the fed will stop raising rates for the first time in 15 months today. >> a lot of the credit for falling inflation can go to gas prices. they're down, even as the saudis cut oil production to try to get energy prices back up. the ceo of san francisco's reddit has reportedly told employees not to walk around with clothing with the company's logo on it.
5:18 am
reddit has angered a lot of users by cutting off access from third-party apps to read reddit. the verge reports the ceo is concerned users are so angry they might take it out on employees. >> and the "wall street journal" says bud light is no longer the most popular beer in america. bud light, as you know, angered a lot of people with a marketing campaign involving a transgender influencer. sales have fallen more than 20%. modello sort of comes out of nowhere. ten years ago it wasn't in the top ten of brands and now it's been the most popular in california for a while, the most popular beer in america. >> i don't drink beer, so i was, like, what is that? >> i don't drink very much, but it's pretty good. >> thanks, scott.
5:19 am
>> why are you guys laughing? is that funny? >> i never thought you would drink beer. >> i'm a wine girl. you know what we're doing? we're celebrating pride month here, celebrating the lgbtq+ community. there's an author sharing how we as a society can help members of the community feel included. this comes as several states have recently passed legislation targeting lgbtq rights. in the book "free to be, a six-week guide to reclaiming your soul" people of the community have a chance to cultivate pride from the inside-out. >> there is a bigger responsibility for those who are not within the community of not othering us. i think that we have advanced in many ways. it used to be that we were tolerated and now we're
5:20 am
accepted. >> and now celebrated. the author also asks for the straight community to reach out to members of the lgbtq+ community and let them know they're accepted. >> good move. >> so important. >> that it is. we'll have another look at the forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect. how is it looking? because i know we've dealt with a little bit of rain. even this morning when i was outside there was some sprinkles. >> we've got some clouds, a little bit of mist. overall we are gradually going to see things clearing out. that's our marine layer that we see that brings us a high amount of humidity for the morning. as temperatures warm up, it pushes back out over the pacific. now, we're also seeing quite a bit of showers and thunderstorms developing over the sierra and yesterday afternoon we had a lot of activity with some cloud-to-ground lightning, boughts of heavy downpours. you can see yesterday afternoon
5:21 am
with all the rain developing around the central sierra and extending toward the east. we're also seeing dryer air pushing down. we can see the leading edge of that. also, it's been fairly cool here. looking at napa, we've had 123 days of temperatures cooler than normal since the start of the year. that means this year 70% of the year has been cooler than average. well, it's going to be another day where we start to see those temperatures starting out cool, but then warming up. in the south bay we'll see highs in the upper 70s and low 80s, reaching 80 degrees in danville and 71 in oakland. near the coast, we're in the low 60s, while in palo alto we're headed for 78 degrees. mid-60s in san francisco, and for the north bay anywhere from 68 in mill valley to 87 in ukiah. along the coastline it's still pretty chilly. we're going to see a change in our weather pattern with an area of low pressure pushing to the east, high pressure building,
5:22 am
but not for long. temperatures will come up a few degrees. by the end of the weekend into early next week, this low moving into the pacific northwest brings back the ocean breeze and brings down the temperatures. take a look at concord, high temperature forecast over the next ten days, really not seeing a significant warm-up here. it's going to stay nice and mild and some very modest warming for the inland areas from now through saturday, and then cooler on sunday. cinthia, you saw some slowing in the south bay. what's going on? >> yeah, so this is for people driving on northbound 680 in east san jose. we got a call about a fire reported, but i'm not exactly sure what's caused the fire. i know fire crews are on scene and we can see there's a little bit of a buildup as you make your way past regional medical center and around to berryessa road. other than that, still looking clear on our traffic sensors. slow as you're making your way from the tri-valley into other parts of the bay area and that
5:23 am
slowdown on 280 not causing too much of a headache this morning. as far as our north bay drivers go, some north bay drive times, still under 10, 15 minutes to get from the north bay to the golden gate bridge. back to you. >> thank you so much. 5:22 right now. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> how can you get an insurance company to pay you every single penny you're owed after a disaster? a really boring home video. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. i'll relieve the boredom and ow you how to reshco

a home inventory is a list of everything you own and insure. if you ever have to file an insurance claim, you have to prove what you had before you get paid. having a home inventory can help. this is your not so secret weapon, a smartphone. use it to record a video, nothing fancy. just walk through every room and go slowly. make sure the clip records everything in each room. talk about what you see. show the brand names and model numbers. speak about where you bought your stuff, when and how much you paid. go all over. open every drawer, every cupboard, every closet. >> so many people have stuff in their garage, too.
5:27 am
>> when you're done, upload your video and any photos or documentation to the cloud in case your phone is destroyed or goes missing during a disaster. a full inventory can save you time, money and heartache. an insurance industry survey found 80% of people in the past year didn't have an inventory or didn't update it. maybe that's because it's a bit of work. but it doesn't have to be. >> there's a number of tools that are now available, many available to your insurance company, probably for free. >> ask your agent about those tools and apps. after all, that's why you pay them a commission. >> take your videos now. coming up next, the top stories we're following, including an overnight brush fire breaking out in fremont. where containment stands. >> reporter: the oakland a's almost doubled their normal attendance last night as fans

5:29 am
5:30 am
it's been so hurtful to the whole town how things have gone down in the last five years with all the promises of a new ballpark. >> right now at 5:30, some are saying unfair and unjust. fans banding together, demanding the team owners sell the a's.
5:31 am
bob redell joins us in studio with more of what lies ahead. >> plus, new objections from disgraced theranos ceo elizabeth holmes legal team. the reason her lawyers say she can't make monthly payments to victims. >> also making it in the bay, the new housing project set to open in the south bay aimed at helping fostered youth. this is "today in the bay." >> good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's start with a look at the forecast for this wednesday morning. halfway through that workweek. what are we in store for today? >> it's about the same. there are more clouds this morning compared to yesterday. but you'll notice that this afternoon in parts of the bay area it's going to be a little warmer. here is a live look outside at our cloudy view of san jose and it's also cloudy in morgan hill. look at the temperature trend throughout the morning. clouds linger through about 8:00 to 9:00. the rest of the day is sunny and it's going to be warming up, headed for 80 degrees there.
5:32 am
in martinez expect a high of 75, also 75 in santa rosa. san francisco not seeing much of a change today. we'll reach into the mid-60s. you're looking at the south bay. what's going on? >> here is what i learned in the last couple of minutes. this is northbound 680 as people are trying to make their way around east san jose. it's a car fire. crews are on scene but there are a couple of lanes blocked. i believe it's the two far right as crews try to get this under control. we're seeing the sensors light up just a little bit. it's only a couple of minutes late. otherwise, people making their way around san jose into other parts of the peninsula or the east bay on 101 or 280, sensors are still green. we still have that disabled vehicle in daly city southbound 280. otherwise, we'll be back with a check of the traffic in just a bit. >> thank you. new overnight a new small brush fire breaks out in
5:33 am
fremont. it happened near moab drive. firefighters have worked to put out the flames. the cause is still unclear. at 5:32, later today lawmakers in nevada could take the next step in guaranteeing the a's move to las vegas. >> bob redell is joining us from the newsroom. this comes after fans showing up en mass last night to show support for the team. >> they did. over 27,000 fans showed up at the coliseum last night, the biggest crowd since 2018 after a fan group called for a so-called reverse boycott to try to convince the a's front office to keep the team in oakland. but the a's staying here in the bay area could be a long shot when you consider what the state of nevada is offering the team to move to las vegas. yesterday nevada senate approved a bill that would provide $380 million in taxpayer money to help build a new ballpark for
5:34 am
the a's on the las vegas strip. later today the nevada state assembly will consider this bill. as i mentioned, almost 28,000 fans attended last night's game. that's almost twice the normal attendance for an a's game, which the a's have the lowest attendance record in the mlb. many fans wore green shirts with the word "sell" written on them to try to convince the owner, john fisher, to sell the a's to someone who wants to keep the team in oakland. >> the owner needs to tune in to what's happening in oakland. >> i hope the league will put pressure on him. >> i know the mlb wants a more diverse fan base. look at oakland. we are one of the most diverse cities in the nation. and so today really represents the spirit of oakland, of what we're going to do. we're going to fight for our oakland a's. >> the a's did not comment on the reverse boycott itself, but they did announce on twitter that they would be donating all
5:35 am
of yesterday's ticket revenue, over $800,000, to the alameda county community food bank and the oakland public education fund. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot to follow there. thank you. well, there are new developments in the case of disgraced theranos ceo elizabeth holmes. her defense is objecting to proposed changes to restitution, specifically holmes does not want monthly payments to victims of $250. her lawyers are arguing there was no schedule for the payments and, therefore, an error. they say holmes has limited financial resources. government lawyers say it was always the intent of the judgment to pay back victims defrauded by holmes. before the fall of theranos, holmes was worth an estimated $4.5 billion. before reporting to prison last month she was living in a $135 million estate. city leaders are taking
5:36 am
steps to cut red tape to try to help with the building rezoning issue, approving legislation that relaxes zoning restrictions. this will allow upper levels to become office, service, design and retail spaces. ground floor zoning will allow for indoor and outdoor entertainments. leaders say it will make it easier for property owners to convert buildings into housing. new affordable housing development opens today for some people struggling to make it in the bay. san jose mayor matt mahan will be among several south bay leaders helping to cut the ribbon on a new eden housing property in san jose. it includes about two dozen units for young adults transitioning out of the foster care system. another two dozen units will be offered to low income families and seniors. an affordable housing bond funded the project. the ceremony gets under way at 10:30 this morning. in oakland, today community activists are going to call on city leaders to address safety and housing issues.
5:37 am
during a news conference they plan to ask city leaders to prioritize funding for those issues in the city's two-year budget. the groups want more funding for violence prevention programs, affordable housing and service for the unhoused. the coalition says they will also fight for certainly proposals that redirect funds to oakland police. today's news conference will be held outside city hall at 11:00. let's go outside right now with a live look. can you name that city? anyone? san francisco, yep. >> karl the fog in the city this morning. >> kari has a look at our forecast. ground level visibility is much better, but higher up it is hard to see. we see clouds rolling by. we have june gloom hanging tough for us out there. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 50s as you head out in san mateo. it's in the low 50s right now in martinez. compare that to 61 in saratoga. we are seeing overall a cool
5:38 am
morning, mostly cloudy. as you're heading to work in the east bay, a look at pleasant hill where we'll be in the upper 50s for the next few hours and then as we get more sunshine, upper 60s, you can see the warming trend. it's going to warm up quite a bit going into this afternoon. you may even notice that it's a little bit warmer compared to yesterday, but still pretty nice. you can make some plans to get outside. our warmest temperature on the map is 81 degrees. we'll see that in livermore, as well as fairfield. we'll talk about what's ahead as we get closer to the weekend coming up. cinthia, you're looking ahead to traffic in oakland tonight. >> that's right. we have another a's game tonight. first pitch is at 6:40. so if you find yourself along 880, we might see a little bit of a backup as people try to make their way into the ballpark. otherwise, down in the south bay, the vta has some overhead line work they're doing, so they have this bus bridge for both the green line and blue line. you can see it for the san fernando and san antonio stations and the san antonio and
5:39 am
capitol stations. now, still sticking in the south bay, i'm monitoring this car fire that's causing quite a bit of a backup as people are making their way northbound to 80 and east san jose, right before berryessa road, and maybe some people are lining up sensors just west of it on 101 as they try to avoid this mess. we'll keep an eye on how things develop. and of course metering lights expected to come on in a little bit on the bay bridge. we'll get back to you on the latest. >> thanks. preparing for a new round of covid boosters. ahead on "today in the bay," we're moving you forward with the data experts are likely to hone in on this week as they craft the next round of shots and why they say time is of the essence. donald trump has a lot to say about his criminal charges. the rest of washington, they're trying to stay out of it. >> also managing your finances with the help of ai. we're going to tell you about the new technology already helping some people get ahead and the warning for anyone considering using it.

5:42 am
right now at 5:42, as you get ready to head out on this wednesday morning in the east bay, let's get a look at union city. we're in the upper 50s right now and we'll see a lot of clouds throughout the next couple of hours. but we are going to see it clearing out by late morning and
5:43 am
overall another beautiful day across the bay area. we'll get a look ahead to some slightly warmer temperatures in our microclimate forecast coming up. this might be one of the places that clears out. we're looking at 580 in dublin, people making their way in and out of the valley. be careful with cloudy conditions out there. otherwise, as far as how much time you're spending bumper-to-bumper, grant line to 680, about a 25 minute drive. 580 to vargas road about a ten-minute commute. we'll talk more about the south bay coming up. breaking overnight, 32 people are dead after a boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized. it happened about 50 miles off the coast of southern greece. 104 people also had to be rescued. some were taken to the hospital with hypothermia. the greek coast guard says it is unclear how many people are missing. that boat was believed to have been sailing from eastern libya. the united nation refugee agency
5:44 am
is planning to help those impacted. tomorrow federal advisers will debate the makeup of the next round of covid boosters. it's similar to deciding the yearly flu shot makeup and timing is critical because drugmakers must be able to manufacture a new round of shots before they believe infections will pick up this fall. regulators will also ultimately have to decide if the new vaccine should be recommended for everyone. first lady jill biden will be in southern california today after her whirlwind stop in the bay area. last night she appeared at an event in san francisco for the gifford law center, a group promoting gun control. gabby gifford embraced the first lady as she took the stage. earlier in the day she attended several fundraisers. this comes as biden
5:45 am
continues to stay away from anything involving donald trump. >> many politicians want no part of this. >> absolutely no part of it. there seems to be no upside for many republican leaders. mitch mcconnell says he wants to stay out of it. senator chuck grassley says he hasn't read the trump indictment because he's not a legal expert. chuck grassley was the chair of the senate judiciary for years. president biden declined to comment on the latest charges and declined comment on the previous criminal charges against trump, which is proper. a sitting u.s. president should not be commenting on an active criminal investigation or trial. biden met with nato secretary-general stoltenberg instead. former president trump pleaded not guilty relating to his retention of classified documents. he spoke from his club in bedminster, new jersey.
5:46 am
>> threatening me with 400 years in prison for possessing my own presidential papers, which just about every other president has done, is one of the most outrageous and vicious legal theories ever put forward in an american court of law. >> there are some inaccuracies there. 400 years is not correct. that is not how federal sentencing guidelines work. though he could face a very serious sentence if found guilty. and they're not his papers. the presidential records act makes it very clear all presidential papers belong to the united states. now, trump's team has been probably deliberately conflating and confusing how presidential papers work. for instance, pointing out other people, like president biden and vice president pence have also had papers they shouldn't have had. here is one of trump's lawyers. >> joe biden himself retained possession of classified documents that have not been

prosecuted, and none of them came into possession of those documents while they were president. >> president trump isn't charged with having papers he shouldn't have. as we know, biden and pence had papers they shouldn't have had. when those papers were found, they gave them back. trump is charged, among other things, with keeping papers he shouldn't have. willful retention is the actual charge. papers he denied he had. papers, according to the indictment, he hid. papers his lawyers swore to the government didn't exist but they did. side note, it's donald trump's birthday today. lots more, marcus, coming up on the "today" show. >> thanks so much. new this morning, artificial intelligence already helping some people manage their personal finances, but financial experts are still advising caution here. analysts say using chatgpt can help you better reach your financial goals, in part by
