last year's peak. inflation rose 4% between last may and this may. the smallest increase in more than two years. leading us off this hour nbc news business and data reporter brian cheung. the fed has hiked interest rates a number of times, why did they choose to skip it? >> they were aggressively moving to make borrowing costs more expensive and it's led to the more expensive credit card rates and auto loan rates that we've all been seeing spike over the last 18 months and at some point the federal reserve has to slow that process, not cutting interest rates, but essentially raising interest rates at a slower pace and the fed chairman jay powell telling reporters in an ongoing press conference that that process is going to take time and that they're slowing that by effectively pausing or as some have described it skipping an interest rate hike in this meeting. the decision to not raise interest rates today came alongside economic projections from the fed that suggests there could be another two interest

about 6.7% since the last year, and a lot of that depends on what you put in your grocery bag. if you've like me and have that sweet tooth, i put doughnuts and cake in my grocery bag, that's an increase of 11%. if you have eggs and milk you're seeing a decrease year over year. i want you to hear from shoppers today. >> a slab of ribs 30-something dollars when you used to get it for 24. that's a big jump. >> so when we see these government numbers, when the government comes out and says oh, inflation is slowing, what are you thinking? >> i'll believe it when i see it. >> you don't feel it yet. >> no. i don't see it either. >> you can take $200 and get nine and almost $400 when you're shopping so i buy less and make do with less or buy in bulk. >> so you hear right there people are still adjusting their
12:39 pm
habits, still figuring out ways to save that buck because of the overall increase in prices. i spoke to the owner of this grocery store and while he feels like things are going in the right direction, he feels like the margins are getting better and he is able to pass some of the savings to consumers and he also says that it's not there yet. you're not seeing those substantial changes just yet, but a lot of this he mentioned depends on specifically what you're getting. it really goes item by item. so for one person they may feel like things are really getting better and have gotten better and for another person they're looking at the increase in prices and saying they still need to adjust and it's also how people feel when they go out to the checkout aisle and finally make that purchase. >> that's right. the consumer behavior, hey, shaq. i have a sweet tooth, too. >> we're in the same on this. another sign of san

francisco's economic struggles post-pandemic. the famed westfield shopping center is shutting its doors after more than 20 years. cnbc senior retail reporter courtney reagan digging into this. i remember a teenager spending a lot of time in westfield malls and we're seeing this trend and what can you tell us about westfield's decision to close in the heart of downtown san francisco. >> i think the ideas of malls closing is not necessarily a new one. what's special about this is we're talking about a changing condition in san francisco. westfield is closing this mall. it is in a downtown area of san francisco for those not familiar and downtown malls are not something that you see all that often and many of them are no longer working. as a matter of fact, we saw brookfield closed its water tower last fall. and matriarch another mall operatorened its ownership in chicago.
12:41 pm
in san francisco specifically, we know office vacancies are among the highest in the country. something around 30%. tourists are starting to come back to san francisco, but they're spending reportedly 77% less than they did pre-pandemic. conventions that often has been a big draw for foot traffic, those have not come back in the same way. so, yes, westfield is closing the mall in san francisco, but it's far from alone when it comes to retailers and they're less productive than they used to be and san francisco specifically, a number of retailers have announced closures in that area. >> given this trend of closures and the brick and mortar stores like westfield mall. is there anything retailers can do that is in a trend now. >> it will be largely area dependent, right? another thing that is worth mentioning in san francisco and in some larger urban areas is this increase in crime and homelessness, so that has factored into some of these decisions when it becomes unsafe
12:42 pm
to operate a store because of things like theft or criminal activity happening around these areas, and so i think retailers are starting to think works with law enforcement in those areas. i think that's all part of it, as well. >> important reporting, courtney reagan. thank you so much. >> thank you. coming up, with increasing numbers of young people identifying as lgbtq how parents' reactions can shape their child's mental health. you're watching nbc news daily. >> we are streaming free 24/7 and watch us wherever you stream live. the news continues after this.

we are talking about how parents can navigate conversations about identity. it can be an overwhelming experience and the same can be said to parents who may not know how to react to different conversations especially on their kids mental health. let's start big picture and it's pride month and we're talking about this through the lens of the lgbtq+ experience. some families may find themselves in a conversation when a child chooses to come out to them choosing to identify as lgbtq. how might a way the parent react to that information then shape how a child approaches life? >> you know, this is really an important question and really important information. we have research now that shows what parental acceptance and rejection can lead to. rejection can change the structure of the brain. in fact, even perceived
12:47 pm
rejection can change the brain. so just having this awareness is one way to start as we begin this process with our kids, our teens and the community. >> donna, it does take a lot of courage, right? for some kids to actually speak to their parents about their sexuality and what should parents be keeping in mind when listening and reacting to their kids? >> yeah. parents really need to understand that this is the time for active listening and to really allow the space and time for our kids to talk to us and to allow for that foundation that we've built for our kids to come to us, to feel secure. we want our kids to be able to come to us, to talk to us and by having that open conversation, that feeling of security, our kids are going to speak to us about their needs, their feelings and what they need from us as parents. >> and the reality is like you're saying, sometimes the child may come forward, but a parent may not support a child's
12:48 pm
sexual identity and what are some of the potential repercussions for young people and what does data say? >> this is where the research is important and if parents can hear it and listen to it, they're going to understand how they can help their kids. so we know that from the research emotional regulation can be impacted. hostility, low self-esteem. then beyond that is the physical implications that can come out later in life with chronic conditions like diabetes and then the third angle to look at is cognitive development. we want to know that our kids are safe in their cognitive development and what happens with the rejection process is that they are unable to form their working memory and learning. so we really want to make sure that we're aware of this research. >> that's really important, and i mean, donna, if a parent feels that their child may actually identify as lgbtq+.
12:49 pm
what do you recommend or should they not say? should they mention it to their child or wait for the child to bring it up? what do you think? >> what experts say about this is for parents to just hold on and wait. take the lead of your child. allow the child to come to you. we don't want to inject our feelings into this or what we think. we want to allow our child to come us to and again, that's that building of that foundation from toddler years that allows our kids to come to us. >> i imagine some parents may feel like they just don't know what to say, right? or they feel like they don't have enough information about the lgbtq+ experience. what do you recommend for them? >> again, what experts are saying is to allow the child to come to them and parents really need to educate. we need to educate ourselves so that we can be informed when we're supporting our children and it's not a lot of education. it's just talking to other parents and talking to doctors and asking for some help.
12:50 pm
this is something that we can do to support our kids. >> donna, i do want to briefly ask you and looking forward, i'm sure some parents had these conversations and maybe they didn't go well. if there is the space. >> be salutely. there's always a space to reconcile and i've spoken to parents who weren't that accepting and they did allow the child the space and time and they gave themselves the space and time to learn and understand about this. you want to build. you can rebuild that bond and rebuild that trust and kids want their acceptance from their parents. so if you give it to them -okay, and one more. -i think we got it.. -yeah, l let's focusus on t. -rv? okokay, everybybody, lolook at the e rv and smim. this is whwhat you wanat for r your familily portrai? good poioint. we bunundled tht with ourur home and d auto . -hey, teteam, get onon in. -t-team? oh. fun. -hey, teteam, get onon in. -t-team?
