containment stands now. working to protect your childcare funding. could be the end for the oakland a's. the crucial step before the team officially calls las vegas home. this is "today in the bay." a very good thursday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. cinthia is in for mike, and we will get to that in a minute, but first let's look at the forecast. it's starting out cool and cloudy and it will clear up, and for the inland valleys it will be warmer. a live look outside in san josé. you will see by 8:00 to 9:00 the sun is breaking out and it's going to be a beautiful day. make plans to get out there. as our temperatures head for the upper 70s and low 80s for today, we are reaching 80 degrees in san josé.

morgan hill one degree warmer, and in the low 80s for livermore. as you head to the inland valleys, it will be in the 80s. but compare that to the 60s, and no change for san francisco along the coastline and the june gloom will continue, mostly cloudy. now we are seeing the traffic piling up on the bay bridge, cinthia? >> yeah, take a look at the camera and more and more people are piling up at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is why the traffic is piling up, i believe, because of the crash happening westbound 80, and we are waiting for crews to show up. you can see the backup from treasure island all the way to the toll plaza. we are seeing the commute build on 101 northbound in san josé, so we will keep an eye on that. as far as another place in the bay area, we will check on what

is going on in the peninsula. but for now no troubles to the report on the san mateo bridge. >> thank you. a troubling night in san josé. right now an investigation is under way after a series of explosions as firefighters fight a fire at a public storage facility. this is near blossom hill and coddle roads. the initial explosion happened around 6:00 last night and was seen from miles away, and captured on camera. you see how large that fire was. it grew to become a three-alarm fire. the san josé firefighters say it's too soon to know what caused the explosion. ginger conejero saab is at the scene and will join us for the latest update. this morning the a's are another step closer to leaving

oakland. >> this comes after the nevada legislature agreed to help pay for a new ballpark in las vegas. today in the bay's bob redell joins us now. they are saying it's still not a done deal. >> the owners of major league baseball teams, they must still approve the a's move to las vegas. that's not set in stone. but nevada's governor must sign the new stadium bill into law, and that is something he is expected to do as early as today. last night the nevada legislature approved an amended deal to use taxpayer money to help the a's build a new ballpark on the vegas strip, and as part of the deal the a's will commit 1 million to $2 million a year. >> before the team gets money handed out they have to put money into the community, because they are afraid you give

them money and then the team leaves. >> the a's put out this statement, we thank the members of the nevada state, and we are especially grateful for the legislators time. and oakland's mayor also put out a statement. whatever happens in nevada, our focus is on what is doing best for oakland and expanding economic opportunity for all residents will not waiver. can you see from the tweets, many a's fans, no surprise, they are unhappy with the potential move out of oakland into las vegas. tuesday night, 27,000 a's fans packed the coliseum which was to show their support and their demand to the billionaire owner to sell the team to somebody that would keep them in oakland.

reporting live, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. a person of interest in a bay area mass shooting now in custody. police say javier campos is a person of interest in friday night's mass shooting in san francisco's mission district. they say he's a known gang member with several outstanding arrest warrants across the bay area. nine people were shot during the drive-by last week at the block party at 24th street and treat avenue. all are expected to survive. in just a few hours the man accused of killing a woman in her san josé home will be back in court. he broke into the home of bambi larson and killed her. he's undocumented with a lengthy record. larson's murder sparked outrage

over the policy. today educators and advocates of san francisco's childcare community will rally again on the steps of city hall to reallocate the city's early education fund. this was the scene last week when hundreds gathered asking for leaders to keep proposition c the way it is. it allocates hundreds of millions of dollars to the city's early education department. this is not the first time prop c was challenged, and now it's up for yet another challenge. >> it's a long fight. early education is notoriously underpaid and you have the impact two times, the families

trying to pay for early education, and only some receive help with. a tentative deal is reached between ports and workers. unions are seeking a bigger share of the profits when cargo shipments surged during the pandemic. if approved by union members the contract will affect 22,000 dock workers at 29 points from california to washington state. and then fda advisors set to debate whether the vaccine, the

process is similar to updating the yearly flu shot that targets the most prevalent strains going around, but doctors say it must happen soon. >> covid, unfortunately, will never go away. it will be like influenza and it will be something like where we think about updating the vaccine based on what is circulating at the time. >> the panel will also decide if the new covid booster should be recommended for everybody and also when they will be available. happening now, firefighters still battling a fire in lake county. the henderson fire is burning on the edge of clearlake near clearlake oak. it has burned about 25 acres. it's 20% contained. cal fire is still concerned about spot fires. let's take a live look outside for you this morning in san josé. nice and calm there this morning. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking what we can expect weather-wise out there. kari, how is it looking? >> it's looking like what we have seen throughout the week,

where we start out cloudy and then clears out shaping up to be a nice day. mountain view, temperatures in the upper 50s this morning. jacket weather to start and then definitely short sleeved weather going into the afternoon as we make it into the 70s and even upper 70s in mountain view for today. dublin expected to reach 80 degrees, and we noticed some of the inland valleys are on a warming trend while you will not see that along the coastline. napa reaching 77 degrees. about the same in santa rosa and novato. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. right now, cinthia has a look at where you can find lower gas prices. >> we are definitely getting ready for the weekend and helping people find the cheapest gas this morning. this is all thanks to the numbers people report on gasbuddy.com. we have the arco in mill valley as you are traveling southbound 101 before you get to sausalito,

and that is coming in at 4.35 for a gallon of regular. and then costco on hesperia boulevard at 4.25 for you, and then in the south bay, the great gas has you at 4.19. let's go from the pumps to the roads, and checking out once you get past the bay bridge toll plaza, there's a crash and you can see sensors lighting up, and this has traffic backed up past treasure island and so you are in a wait as they clear the three cars that got into it. and then a car fire, and there was a u-haul that caught fire and chp said it should take another 45 minutes to clear some of the lanes. right now we have got three lanes blocked northbound 280 as they try and clear this scene.

more quickly for the inland areas and that's where the temperatures will warm up. here we are staying in the 50s for the next few hours. we will be at 60 degrees at 11:00, and that's when we will see the sun peeking outgoing into today with cooler weather there. for the valleys and parts of the south bay, it will be warmer today, reaching 82 in los gatos and in san josé. for the east bay, heading to 81 in danville and 71 in oakland. our high temperatures near the coast, no different than what we have seen recently. only mid-60s there. for half moon bay and daly city reaching 65. and for san francisco, mostly cloudy in the marina district, and we are staying in the 50s. also upper 60s for mill valley, and for ukiah reaching 89

degrees. we are getting another area of low pressure drop into the pacific northwest and that will bring rain for areas further to the north but shift our wind flow and bring back an ocean breeze that will bring down temperatures once again. the climate prediction center is saying for the next two weeks we will continue for lower than normal temperatures across the west and the bay area, and the south will be very hot, especially in texas. our rain outlook is showing the pacific northwest, once again that low will drop in and bring rain further to the north and that will keep it pretty soggy there. take a look at the temperatures respond to the changes. ukiah goes from near 90 degrees today and then 94 tomorrow and then back down. then we will only see a high of about 70 on juneteenth, so a big change over the next several days. we will see our valley

temperatures staying like what we typically see for the end of june, and then go back to early june or late may with those temperatures by the end of the weekend into monday. cinthia, you were seeing delays around daly city? >> yeah, this is northbound 280, and the sensors are picking up sensors around the hickey boulevard. it was a u-haul that caught fire and some of the lanes have been blocked so the police and ambulance can get there. we are keeping an eye on the crash as you make your way into san francisco. this is westbound 80 near 5th street. after the fremont street off-ramp, and the sensor is not red but is yellow all the way to treasure island and beyond into the bay bridge toll plaza. it will take about 20 minutes to make it across the span on the

welcome back. 6:26 right now. this is a live look at the international space station. right now astronauts are in the middle of a seven-hour spacewalk. they are working on solar panels on the outside of the station. since 2021 nasa is installing new panels and are expected to generate 30% energy expected to scientists. after the partial collapse over the weekend that happened in the area where the truck caught fire under an i-95 interstate onramp.

we will see sunshine at 9:00 and sunny skies for the rest of the day with highs reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s for this afternoon. up to 80 degrees in san josé, and 77 today in novato. a look ahead to the weekend forecast and events going on and i will help you make some plans, and that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. an investigation is under way as to what caused explosions and flames and smoke at a storage unit. >> ginger conejero saab is live. crews have been there throughout the night working to contain the fire. >> reporter: that's right, laura and marcus. they say the fire is not out yet as of this morning despite the hard work they have been putting into the fire to contain it throughout the night. take a look behind us. can you see they are still hosing water down on some of the units. there are active fires that i am

told they are working on, and they are being mindful of the wind that has picked up in the area, making sure that doesn't play a factor in a potential spread of the small fires. the cause of the three-alarm fire last night is still being investigated, but it was already sparking intrigue not just because of the flames and smoke but because of the sounds coming from the fire. you can clearly hear it, the popping and crackling of flames. it all started around 6:00 yesterday evening, and you can see the initial explosions caught on camera in the distance. it appears to be fireworks, and that's what people say the blast sounded like. the fire department says the cause is still under investigation and was not able to tell us if the fireworks we have seen around the scene, around the storage unit came

from that facility. >> it's a lot worse than i thought. on the news, they only showed the back end of it so i thought i was safe, and now, here seeing this now and it's still on fire, i know i'm done. >> reporter: that was from the small business owner who had a unit very close or around the units that seem to be hardest hit from the fire. he came this morning seeing it for the first time, you know, getting a little emotional because he says there's about 60 to $80,000 worth of water heaters in that unit that he runs his business out of. the fire captain last night said the arson investigator was on scene and there's the possibility of fireworks playing a factor in this, and, of course, none of that is confirmed as of yet. the good news is all of this is

camera video, from last july showing the police stop. this is when the officer determined the passenger was wanted on a felony report and then the man is resisting the officers as he tried to detain him. so about this time, as you can see right here, the man is getting pushed to the ground and then agreeing to be placed in the patrol car. but he then refuses again to get in, this time saying that he is fearing a panic attack. but that's when the officer is seen in the video kneeing the man in the stomach and even punching him. in a statement antioch's police chief says in part my hope is our community will see the actions of our personnel and investigate and bring this matter to my attention as an expression of their commitment

to accountability. the accused getaway driver is set to have a plea hearing at 9:00 this morning. the second suspect you see there on the right is accused of firing the shot that killed the home depot loss prevention worker. the shooting happened in april at the store on johnson drive. when investigators say she was confronted over stolen items. and then bankman-fried is due back in federal court and expected to ask a judge to throw out 10 of the 13 criminal charges he's facing, and those charges include fraud and conspiracy. the 31-year-old denies all those accusations. bart is expected to make cuts as it faces a budget deadline today, however the transit agency just got a lifeline from state lawmakers,

and $1.1 billion will go to help fund state transit, and the plan rolls back $2 billion in proposed cuts to transit capital projects. last month bart warned it might have to closed stations and eliminate weekend and night service if the state did not step in. even with the news of the funds, bart officials say they will still need to make some cuts. as of this morning, it's still unclear if governor newsom is onboard with the subsidy. a live look at sfo where today you can expect a lot of activity. today's actually expected to be the single busiest travel day since before the start of the pandemic. you can see it peaks today with

nearly 52,000 travelers. meteorologist, kari hall, is here now with an early peek of the weekend holiday forecast. sounds like we won't have to travel far to enjoy nice weather. >> yeah, we will have great weather, but people want to travel and go see dad and you have an extra day off. right now i am seeing a 30-minute delay on average for the washington, d.c. airport. we also have severe storms moving across the south, so that's another area we will be watching. a little closer to home, the flights are all on time and things are looking good and it's nice and dry and we are keeping the mild weather. maybe you are going to l.a. this weekend to cheer on the giants. it will be a cool evening, so pack some of the same clothes you might pack if you were going to oracle park. we are going to see a lot of events going on around the bay

area including the alameda county fair, and gates open tomorrow and we will see comfortably warm weather with highs in the low 80s. with something cooler today at the santa cruz beach boardwalk, free movies on the beach and it's going to be in the mid-50s late in the evening. cinthia, there could be traffic this afternoon in oakland? >> yeah, maybe you are staying put and going over to oakland. we have the athletics goinging on at 12:37 this afternoon. if you are taking a lunch break around that hour, 880, prepare to see backups as people make their way in and out of the ballpark. in santa clara and san josé this weekend we have the graduation ceremony going on for under grads at santa clara university. if you have coffee shops or breakfast places you want to go to, that could be backed up. and taking transit this morning,

take you about 10 or 12 men's to get from richmond in to marin county. the bay bridge backed up with the crash in san francisco. we'll take a look at that coming up. more than 40 migrants are receiving assistance in southern california after being bussed to an l.a. church under the orders of texas governor abbott. this is abbott's latest move to send busloads of migrants unannounced to so-called sanctuary cities. he tweeted out, quote, small texas boder towns remain over-run and overwhelmed because biden refuses to secure the border. governor newsom's office responded saying instead of demonizing asylum seekers we focus on working with migrants

and together we will make sure the children and families that arrive are safe and welcomed. earlier this month florida governor, ron desantis, ordered two planes carrying about 20 migrants to sacramento, all of whom he said consented ahead of time. washington will get an update on the number of people trying to cross the border this week. >> and scott mcgrew, that number has been falling. >> falling by a lot. good morning. and it's been off the news radar. yes, we have big problems to solve at the border, but the number of migrants custom and border protection deals with, they call them encounters, are down by 11% measured. the situation at the border and inflation going better for biden. the president will meet with heads of big ticketing agencies

at the white house, and they will announce they will tell you the actual price of the ticket from here on out. no hidden fees. that has been a big push for president biden. he calls them junk fees. another candidate for president on the republican side, miami mayor, francis suarez, will be at the reagan library in southern california tonight. he's super popular in miami. elected with more than 85% of the vote. not the first candidate from florida. for trump that's a strategic advantage, because the more candidates to split up the pie, the fewer each one gets in the primary. many of the candidates don't seem to be running against trump. they don't criticize him or his policies or offer different ideas. a republican strategists, a veteran of six presidential campaigns asked if you are not

willing to criticize him, ask yourself why you are running to defeat him? one candidate willing to criticize, trump's former vice president, mike pence. >> my son is a marine. my son-in-law is a navy lieutenant. the very prospect that what is alleged here took place creating an opportunity where highly sensitive classified material could have fallen into the wrong hands even inadvertently, that jeopardizes our national security and puts at risk the men and women of our armed forces. like i said, i can't defend what is alleged but the former president has a right to his day in court. >> indeed, lots more on the trump case coming up on the "today" show. laura? >> thank you, scott. happening today, u.s. health and human services secretary is

scheduled to make stops in oakland and sacramento where he is expected to announce the launch of the health workforce initiative. this is a nationwide initiative the second believes will help boost the health care workforce. he previously served as california's attorney general and before that represented los angeles in the house of representatives. now to the climate in crisis. five bay area beaches are listed among the post polluted anywhere on the west coast. the environmental group just revealed the top ten beach bummer list, and the five peninsula beaches are included, linda mar beach, and marlin park, erckenbrack park and pillar point harbor. that list is based on the amount of harmful bacteria in the ocean. and there could be something in the water at one virginia

hospital after what can only be called a unique baby boom. >> 12 women who all work in one neonatal intensive care unit are pregnant or have given birth this year in newport news. half of them are first-time moms, and the last due date is in november. by the way, if you are keeping score at home, so far six girls and three boys with the gender of the three babies not yet known. let me tell you, if they are nicu nurses, they are gifted in taking care of little ones. >> that has happened around here, i have heard, you know, where somebody gets pregnant. >> yeah, happened in our news room four or five years ago. something in the water. there were a few multiples. >> we have had a few back-to-back kind of here on our team, lately. >> yeah, i had them 60 seconds

apart. win big or go home. >> and you win big. it's friday eve. >> yes, and we are making plans for the weekend. the weather is still looking nice. we are starting out with clouds. even as we look south from san josé, we are seeing breaks in the clouds and some of our inland areas are going to clear up quickly so temperatures will be warmer. we are headed to 81 degrees in cupertino. for the east bay we are going to reach into mostly the low 80s, but it did get hot yesterday in antioch. heading back to the upper 80s. in oakland today we will see a high of 75. 79 today in fremont. for the peninsula, it's also going to be in the upper 70s from palo alto. staying cool near the coastline where the june gloom continues and we are seeing the clouds extending into san francisco with peeks of sun by late morning into the afternoon.

stories. an investigation is under way after a series of explosions as firefighters fight to battle a fire at a storage facility in san josé. we have a live look at the scene this morning where crews are still there. it's near blossom hill and coddle roads. the initial explosion happened about 6:00, and it was seen miles away last night. the fire grew to become a three-alarm fire. it appears the fire could be started by fireworks but san josé firefighters say it's too soon to know what caused the explosions. nevada assembly members last night quickly approving that $380 million las vegas stadium funding plan. it's followed the previous approval by state senators for a new ballpark on the strip, and it calls for the a's to increase the financial commitment to the local community.
