thanks for the latest. parents and teachers in the south bay are demanding one district do more to protect lgbtq+ students. dozens of parents rallied during a san jose unified school district meeting yesterday, they want to create an lgbtq+ advisory committee so students can get more rights and have a liaison on every campus. board members were supposed to vote on a resolution recognizing pride month but the president pulled it off the agenda to revise it. >> there's a culture of fear in the district, there are so many students who use pronouns that are not he or she and are constantly misgendered. >> their minds are still developing, they have a special innocence to them. and i think to confuse them with, you know, the pride and the trans, i don't think that's a good thing to do. >> the board president says he
5:07 am
expects the revised resolution will get a vote in august. well, tomorrow 1,600 students will graduate from santa clara university. >> that includes a 14-year-old who is not even old enough to drive. "today in the bay"'s bob redell joins us now. i understand he'll be the youngest person to graduate from santa clara. >> correct. he is a 14-year-old boy from pleasanton with an iq that is ranked in the top one-tenth percentile of the general population, while most of his peers just graduated middle school, tomorrow he will receive a bachelor's degree with a job already lined up at one of the country's top space companies. at age 9, his parents had him tested and found him to be profoundly gifted. >> at a very early age he was recognizing advanced mathematical models that i was very impressed with, but i thought, okay, this is normal.
5:08 am
>> reporter: but it was not. at age 10 a pediatrician recommended college to keep up with his accelerated learning. after one year in livermore and three years at santa clara university, the 14-year-old will graduate with an engineering degree and a job as a software engineer for space x, a highly competitive company with an acceptance rate of less than 1%. >> there's a conventional belief that i'm missing out on a noble vision of childhood but i'm here to tell people that's not true. outside of academics, i have a fairly normal life. >> this path invites a lot of vitreal, especially online. but we try to keep our head in the long game, meaning what does kairon want to do, what is best for kairon and how can we best guide that path that our son is

yesterday. thousands of households are without power this morning, mostly in the northeast section. 56 people were also injured. several shelters have been opened in that area for those who are now displaced. we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. just a devastating situation. that tornado came, a lot of damage quickly. how long are we talking about here that the severe weather -- the system is going to last? >> it's going to continue to move off to the east. but when you have a tornado, it's only on the ground for a few minutes and it causes so much damage. what happens is the next day the national weather service goes out there, they look at the damage and then they determine the strength of the tornado based on the damage they saw. but this is north of amarillo. yesterday we saw severe storms move through and it happened so quickly, the system is still continuing to move and it's already moving into parts of alabama this morning, after moving into mississippi yesterday. so it was moving quickly. it's already cleared the area
5:12 am
and today they'll continue to assess what happened and also get a determination of how strong that tornado was. so we'll be watching that. as we get started this morning, we can see the low clouds over san francisco. we are starting out with another cloudy morning with our usual june gloom that we see to start out each day, with that marine layer coming in. it clears out as we go late morning into the afternoon, and then going into the next few days we're going to see more of the same weather, where temperatures spread out with low 80s inland and 60s near the coastline. cinthia, you're tracking the roads. how is it looking? >> we're still down in the south bay where we have that fire on graystone lane by the high school right there and the roads get a little windy. chp has been called out to control the residential streets out there. we are seeing reports of some wires being down. so just avoid the area as a whole if you can and hop on almaden expressway if you need

good friday morning. it is 5:15. let's get a live look outside in oakland. as you get ready to head out the door, it is cloudy, it is cool, 59 degrees currently, and we'll see a mostly cloudy morning and another day very much like yesterday where we start to see more sunshine and a really pleasant afternoon. we'll talk about the weekend forecast in a few minutes. also cloudy and cool over here on 580 in dublin, but traffic is still running pretty smoothly at this hour, as people maybe work from home on this friday around the bay area. tri-valley drive time, grant line to 680 about a 20 minute commute, while it will take you around ten minutes to get to 680. we'll take a look at more bay area traffic coming up. happy friday. shares in cava doing well after a big ipo this week. cava is a restaurant a bit like

5:18 am
have been using computers for decades but they're running into a problem. there's a ton of good data but their computers don't talk to each other. in some departments the automatic license plate reader can't be referenced with the past 911 calls or shot spotter records. all of that has to be done by hand and the officer in the field needs it now. in "press here" we look into possible solutions. >> it's possible the data exists but it's unavailable when the officer needs it. what we find is so often the officer needs that information in near real time. >> we will also take a look at the business of mommy blogging, influencers making high six figure incomes talking about their lives online. diverse subjects at 9:00 a.m., right after "meet the press." >> i should have done that in the height of -- people had so much interest in the triplets and raising them.
5:19 am
i didn't have time, i was raising triplets. >> and working. >> i know you well enough to know you would. >> in a heartbeat. >> thanks, scott. this weekend kicks off a host of celebrations across the bay area, honoring juneteenth. the federal holiday commemorates the emancipation of black americans who were enslaved in texas two years past the emancipation proclamation. san jose african american service agency is hosting it's 42nd annual festival and this year they'll have a host of local black businesses and the marching 100 band from the florida agricultural and mechanical university. this year's musical guest is award winning center michelle. while the festivities are about celebration and joy, it is also time to educate about america's
5:20 am
past. >> freedom is for all, but we know within the black community, that freedom came with a price of our ancestors. so as we educate not only our leaders, students and educational facilities and their wonderful teachers to share what juneteenth is and we do that in the community, it is imperative that we continue to talk about, educate and reassure all that freedom is something that everybody can get involved in. >> it's really a fun family event. if you have time, make sure you get out. all three major bay area cities hosting juneteenth festivals tomorrow and they are all free. so in san jose it is in downtown on first street between san carlos and reed street. in san francisco, the festivities will cover fillmore district and in oakland it will take place at the lake merritt

amphitheater area. it is always fun. i posted the one in san jose for many years. always fun, a family event, and the music and food, oh, it is great. >> there's one in antioch this weekend, too. >> which is great. so no matter where you are in the bay area. >> a lot of cities host them. >> and the weather is going to cooperate? >> it's going to be beautiful this weekend. we're expecting it to warm up a little more for the inland valleys but not so much. we're just talking about a couple of degrees here. so as we start to look live right now in san rafael, we are at 50 degrees. it is a cool morning start and we are also going to see our sky clearing out as we go into today. lots of sunshine as we go into the afternoon. upper 70s for the north bay. this is basically the way it was yesterday as we continue to see temperatures reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s. and as you take a look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, we are going to see more mild weather. so when we talk about a warm-up,
5:22 am
i'm only saying 83 in san jose. nothing extreme here. and in san francisco there won't be much of a difference as we keep the marine layer and clouds holding down those temperatures. but by sunday, father's day, heading out to the golf course or maybe taking dad out for dinner, it will be in the low 70s in san jose. noticeably cooler and windy as we see a cooldown across the region. we're going to continue to see cooler temperatures going into the first part of next week, but then we are also going to see more cooler than normal weather continue. so here is a look at what to expect with our seven-day forecast, our temperatures in the low 70s for father's day and then juneteenth in the low 70s, going into next week only some modest warming. we're still looking at cooler than normal temperatures, even as we lead into the first day of summer. cinthia, you've been watching the bay area commute. is it friday light? >> it is so far. there's only one issue we're keeping an eye on down here in the south bay. it's south san jose on graystone

5:32 am
ahead to the weekend coming up. cinthia, you have something new in the south bay. >> the south bay is keeping us busy this morning. this is for people trying to get out of the south bay on 85 and saratoga. we have a couple lane blocked. there was a car that might have gone off the road. still getting details sorted out from chp. they had their lights out. so a dangerous situation as they try to figure out exactly what happened. if you want to avoid this, you can get on 17 and then rejoin 280 up there and avoid this mess altogether. otherwise, we're still looking at that house fire on graystone lane. avoid the area as chp is out there trying to get all the wires situated as they put out this fire over the next couple of minutes. back to you guys. we're going to continue to talk about that house fire. it is breaking news this morning, where crews are working to put out a two-alarm house fire in the almaden valley area. >> those downed power lines causing some concerns.
5:33 am
ginger conejero saab is live there at the scene this morning. what have you been able to learn? >> reporter: well, a bit of good news that we've learned this morning, marcus and laura, is that progress has been made in fighting that two-alarm residential fire on graystone lane. you can see it up the road from where we are. but we've got the intersection of graystone and santa teresa because chp told us we can't get any closer to that fire because there's concern of downed power lines. now, earlier this morning pg&e reporting over 1,000 customers were without power, the very latest update on that is that power has been restored to those customers and that power lines have been neutralized. but the chp says they first got word of the fire at 3:00 this morning. when fire crews arrived, there was concern about a pole on fire and the possibility that power lines will fall. because of that, the roads around the area were closed by
5:34 am
chp. now, the wires did at some point fall and come across the driveway, but we are told now the latest from pg&e that those power lines have been neutralized and those without power, their power has also been restored. we are waiting to hear official word from either the fire department or from police how the progress on this fire is and what the extent of the damage is. we'll be bringing you updates throughout the morning. live in san jose, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest, ginger. 5:33 right now. and in san jose authorities are saying very little so far about that person now in custody in connection to the fire that destroyed a public storage facility. this started wednesday night on blossom hill road. firefighters only getting this under control early yesterday morning. arson investigators are being cautious in looking for the cause of whether that fire was set intentionally.
5:35 am
firefighters do confirm that fireworks were found in the debris and witnesses say they heard large explosions they believed were from the fireworks when the fire broke out. to a story you'll only see on nbc bay area. an east bay family is still in disbelief after getting horrific news from the hospital saying their child had been killed. but only to later find it was a mistake. the brown family says they got the call earlier this week from san francisco's zukerberg hospital that their 30-year-old son had been shot and killed. after an hour of grieving, the father called the hospital after he just felt something was wrong. he says the hospital never gave him an initial description of their son during the first call. soon, they realized the man who died was not their loved one, but someone who had their son's license. the other young man who is 4 inches taller, weighed 50 pound more. >> whatever protocol they had,
5:36 am
what they did was not okay. >> every time i talk about it, i'm shaking now, but there's something -- you verify. >> zukerberg general hospital did apologize for the mixup. the brown family says when they finally got ahold of their son, he told them he had lost his wallet. labor issues heating up in the south bay as workers in santa clara's largest union have authorized a strike if a new contract cannot be reached. workers representing regional medical center and offices including county parks and maintenance, 911 dispatch, and the assessor's office are all in talks to reach a new deal before the contract expires june 25th. union leadership says the majority of workers this week voted to authorize a strike. depending on how talks proceed, leaders will determine if and when a strike is necessary. happening today, get ready for funnel cakes, pig races,

wearing their orange, especially in dodger territory. so kari, we're talking about an amusement park type event and the weekend weather. there's so much going on. >> so much going on. we're going to start out with fans who will be traveling down to cheer on the giants in l.a. we're looking at temperatures there in dodgers stadium at about 56 degrees, so it's going to be cool at first pitch at 7:10 this evening, and we'll continue to see temperatures going down a few more degrees, reaching into the mid-50s later on this evening. also mostly clear there. here is a look at the forecast for the alameda county fair. now, this is going to be a great thing to check out not only for this weekend, but the next couple of weeks as it continues until july 9th. today with gates open, we'll be in the upper 70s. i don't know if you'll want to get weather this nice for the next several weeks, but this is definitely a great one to check out and enjoy. now, also for some cooler

5:40 am
with dad. maybe your gift to dad is your graduation from santa clara university this weekend. we might see some traffic piling up along el camino real, so just avoid that area. give those parents a nice way to get smoothly to their kid's graduation. i want to let you know about the shutdown in effect for caltrain for the 17th and 18th, so tomorrow and on sunday there will be no train service between san francisco and millbrae, so just make sure you have an alternate way to get around the city and the peninsula if you do have any weekend plans with dad this weekend. another thing i want to let you know about in the east bay, ac transit for juneteenth, they will be running their sunday schedule. so stay up to date with the website to get wherever you need to go on juneteenth. >> coming up, the u.s. reaches out trying to repair some relationships. >> and a testament showing hard work actually pays off. a dream job one bay area woman

5:46 am
against the former president. the day after that trump lost that first case, he went on cnn and called carroll, among other things, a whack job. carroll then amended the current lawsuit to reflect trump's new comments, which a judge allowed. that trial starts in january. >> as we talk about the times donald trump is or will be in court, it's important to remember there are still two other blockbuster investigations out there, one by the state of georgia alleging election interference, a felony, and a separate investigation led by special counsel jack smith looking into trump's actions on january 6th. there are grand juries involved in both and it's our understanding the georgia grand jury has finished its work. finally, the latest candidate to join the race spoke at the reagan library in southern california last night, miami mayor francis suarez, using reagan-esque language. >> i believe america is still a
