story. a widespread devastation after a tornado tore through the texas panhandle town of perryton. >> residents there given a four-minute warning before it ripped through. you can see there just some of the damage it left behind. the trailer park in the area taking a direct hit. streets littered with debris. the death toll in perryton is expected to rise. dozens are hurt, including several people in critical condition. >> yeah. the storm is part of a massive system that's causing damage across a large part of our country overnight, and it is still on the move. so we will talk to the fire chief in perryton. and al will have his full forecast on what we can expect. but we will begin with sam brock. sam, what's the latest? >> reporter: hoda, this is the embodiment of devastation. i'm standing on main street, first and main. look over my shoulder.

this building used to be a gym. restaurants and bars are gone. the police station and the fire station are housed in city hall right down the street here. that is wiped out as well. in terms of the latest figures, hoda, we're looking at a situation with 75 to 100 people injured. three confirmed fatalities and one person missing as the task force is on the ground right now looking for possible signs of life. >> reporter: for the people of perryton, texas, their town and their lives have been changed forever. >> come to the station for rescue. >> reporter: a panorama of heartache and pain after two tornadoes. two or possibly three touched down in this small town. video showing one barrelling across fields and crossing a highway. the storms ripped apart dozens of mobile homes, leaving this downtown area completely unrecognizable. prompting a frantic search for

survivors who might be trapped under the rubble. >> missing four people in this location. >> reporter: texas governor greg abbott deploying emergency resources, including more than 100 members of a texas a&m search-and-rescue team who are set to touch down in a few hours with at least ten k-9 units. their goal, wide area searches. >> we're without power, and we are trying to get everything we can done to restore power to our community and help those in need. >> reporter: it comes as the whole region has been under siege from severe weather. overnight, west florida dealing with severe flash flooding. the national weather service calling it a life-threatening situation. residents in that area waking up to a foot of rainfall. 30 million people across texas, louisiana and southern florida are also under heat alerts today. the scorching temperatures expected to last for days and break records. but this morning, a nation's thoughts anchored firmly with

the people in this small, tornado-ravaged town, still waiting to learn the true depth of their loss. we've learned this morning that there are 15 critical care patients that were transferred to larger hospitals for treatment. we do not know what their status is this morning. there were 100 homes that were damaged, half of them are trailers. all of their things that they owned in life were in those homes. >> sam, thank you so much. joining us now is the perryton fire chief. it is good to see you this morning. thank you for taking a moment from your busy moment. i know you are on a search-and-rescue mission. can you tell us where things stand at this hour. >> yes. currently, of all of the homes that we have searched, all of the occupants are accounted for

except for one. and so our main priority this morning is going to be going back over that area and re-searching it and following the debris field and seeing if we are able to find that one person that's still unaccounted for. >> chief, we can see some of the destruction behind you there downtown can you describe for us the extent of the damage in and around town that you and your teams are seeing there >> yeah. this one building is just absolutely just one of the many downtown area has many of the store fronts totally wiped off building collapsed or partially collapsed.

the path of this storm, there are a lot of conventional construction homes that are completely destroyed the trailer park that the tornado first hit, there is probably 25 to 30 of those homes that are completely destroyed as well and then the path across town, there is probably going to be 150 homes, as of my rough guess. 150 to 200 homes that will be destroyed. >> small community, chief. 8,000 people we can talk about the destruction of buildings, but i can only imagine what it's like to be a resident as someone that lives there and loves this community. tell me how people there are coping. >> you know, you just keep hearing people say, we'll rebuild. we'll be back.

and, you know, the small community, we will and that's the hope that we have and, you know, our biggest regret right now, you know, is the loss of life we do have three confirmed fatalities and, so, that's our biggest concern in trying to help those families carry on. and, you know, it is such a tragedy all of the stuff that behind me, you know, it can all be rebuilt but those lives that we've lost is really the tragedy of everything. >> well, fire chief, know there is a whole nation of people with you holding hands. we wish you the very best this morning. >> thank you, chief. >> thank you, hoda. >> dealing with a lot down there. al, can you give us more on these tornadoes and also where they may be headed. >> yeah.

good morning to you, folks the flooding, the extreme heavy rain that's going on in western florida is a big problem there it is still flash flood emergency in western -- just western pensacola. they could pick up another 6 inches or more they already have a foot of rain we have severe thunderstorm watches, severe thunderstorm warnings stretching from texas all the way into florida we will be watching what happens here a mid-atlantic threat will be developing in the afternoon. so folks traveling along the i-95 corridor have to be careful. we're talking about damaging hail wind gusts of 60 miles an hour tornadoes possible we move on tomorrow. we have a risk from oklahoma city, wichita. afternoon storms develop along the front range. looking back down pensacola, western florida, more 1-inch hail in diameter or more and we move into sunday.

the threat now from the ozarks all the way to the central gulf. damaging wind gusts the main storm hazard we can't rule out a tornado or two. we've got that heat. records stretching from new orleans, dallas, brownsville and right on into the weekend and we are talking about triple digits. these are air temperatures not just the heat indexes, but air temperatures that will be in triple digits up to san angelo. >> al, we'll come back to you in a few minutes. meanwhile, an encouraging update on the health of pope francis. the pontiff released from the hospital after a week after underwent abdominal surgery. kelly, first of all, how is the pope doing >> reporter: yeah. he's said to be doing well his doctor says he's better than before the surgery pope francis back this morning after waving to well-wishers

outside the hospital today he was smiling, appeared in good spirits. when asked how he was, he said, i'm still alive. the pope took a moment to pray at the basilica before heading back to the vatican. the pontiff, who is 86, underwent abdominal surgery last wednesday to repair a hernia his medical team says he recovered successfully his hospitalization initially sparking concerns over his health the pontiff was admitted earlier this year for a lung infection and two years ago he had part of his colon removed. the vatican says the pope spent most of his time in the hospital resting and recovering, but he did find time yesterday to visit the children's cancer ward seen in these pictures, thanking the children for their letters, drawings and messages of support. >> it is good to hear that the pope is certainly on the mend. does that mean, kelly, that he is fully cleared to get back to work >> yeah.

so the vatican says the pope is already back at work and plans to recite his noon prayer on sunday also resume private audiences. he will be only be skipping next wednesday's general audience his surgeon says he's well enough to travel or should be by this summer and that he should be a stronger pope. >> good news all around. kelly cobiella for us. thank you. we are learning that several government u.s. agencies have been hacked. officials say it was part of a broader cyber attack that hit dozens of companies and organizations in recent weeks. cyber security experts say they're still investigating the scope of the attacks they do say the hackers exploited a vulnerability in a program called move it it is a popular tool for transferring files quickly it is not clear whether the stolen files are sensitive or r hackers just disrupted some

it's proving to be a challenge and zelenskyy says if ukraine prevails, they will win the war. we are now in the early days of this long-anticipated counter offensive. how is it going? >> translator: i cannot give you all the details. there are both offensive and defensive actions. things look not bad. i would say it's generally positive, but it's difficult our heroic people, our troops, who are now at the front of the front line, are facing very tough resistance and we understand why. because for russia to lose this campaign to ukraine, i would say actually means losing the war. >> reporter: volodymyr zelenskyy also had a dire warning. he blamed russia for blowing up a dam, flooding dozens of villages

he tells us the next target is is the zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. president zelenskyy said he's aware that some republican candidates are expressing doubts about american support for ukraine. >> translator: yes, we are concerned about the this yes. i believe it is a great risk for ukraine. we are not worried about a new person in power. but a change in the policy of the united states, that's what we don't want. and i believe it won't happen. >> reporter: defense officials from nato countries are meeting in brussels today to discuss possible membership for ukraine. it is something russia deeply opposes. president zelenskyy says ukraine must have a clear path to membership with security guarantees craig? >> our chief foreign correspondent richard engel there with the exclusive thank you.

we have a lot more to get to, including a parade more than a half a century in the making the denver nuggets celebrated the first ever championship. while the event was festive, it was also marred by several unfortunate incidents including a shooting steve patterson joins us with more. >> police are still searching for a suspect involved in that shooting remember, this is the second shooting in less than a week following a nuggets' celebration. the police chief says he takes this very seriously. and based on how many active cameras were in the area, he believes they will make an arrest very quickly. it was supposed to be a big victory party in downtown denver, a parade for the nuggets, capping their historic first-ever nba finals win. hundreds of thousands of fans packing the streets. but shortly after the celebration started to wind down, gunshots rang out. police say the suspect, an unidentified male, started

firing, wounding two people who are both in serious condition. denver's police chief saying all involved likely knew each other. >> we believe this was a targeted incident. >> authorities say the shooter is still at large but with multiple security cameras in the area, they're confident he will be captured. on monday, ten people were injured after gunfire broke out. police characterizing that mass shooting as a drug deal gone run. celebration marred by senseless acts of violence >> here we are again, having to talk about someone endangering the lives of people who came to celebrate. >> meanwhile, in a separate incident during the victory parade, a veteran denver police officer was badly injured after a fire truck accidentally rolled over his leg authorities say the decorated s.w.a.t. sergeant was trying to

scene of a two-alarm house fire in san jose. we have a live look from the scene. it's happening on graystone lane in the almaden neighborhood. the fire started just after 3:00 this morning. police say roads are closed in that area because there were downed power lines. also breaking this morning, the warriors have already found their new general manager, minutes ago the team tweeting out that it reached a deal with former warriors player and current vice president of operations mike dunleavy jr. he'll replace the outgoing bob meyers, who stepped down after 11 seasons as gm. dunleavy played five seasons with the warriors after the team drafted him third overall back in 2002. he's been in the team's front office since 2018. let's get a look at the friday forecast with meteorologist kari hall. >> we have some great weather leading into the weekend, even though it's starting out cloudy this morning for the inland areas, it does clear out quickly and we'll see temperatures reaching into the low 80s. about the same weather tomorrow

it is the latest accident of its kind that has some travelers on high alert this morning, this upscale resort just outside cabo san lucas is now the site of the investigation into the deaths of an american couple. >> it is just devastating. >> reporter: family members say 28-year-old abby lutz and her boyfriend, 41-year-old john heathco were vacationing together at the resort authorities saying two americans were found unresponsive inside their room by hotel staff at the rancho pescadero hotel where rooms can cost near $1,000 a night. over the weekend, the family says the couple started feeling ill after they arrived and headed to the hospital to seek treatment. >> he got really sick. he thought it was food poisoning. >> he spent the night getting ivs and things then they felt better. they went back to the hotel and spent the day at the pool. when they went to bed, i guess

they didn't wake up. >> reporter: on a gofundme page, we have been told it was due to improper venting of the resort and could be carbon monoxide poisoning. >> they just thought it was food poisoning. they had no idea none of us thought about that because you can't smell carbon monoxide. set in part >> reporter: the hotel, owned by the hyatt says, we are refraining from speculation from the cause, adding there's no threat to guests safety or well-being al this time. sadly, deaths like these are far too common in october, three americans appeared to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning in an upscale airbnb in mexico city. last may, three u.s. tourists were found dead at a sandals resort in the bahamas, also killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. a tragedy in paradise for a

now at 8:44 with the "today" exclusive. craig, you shared a very, very important conversation with an nba legend >> yeah, tony snell had a lot of success in his career. last year at the age of 31, he was diagnosed with autism. now tony snell is coming forth for the first time to share his story and show others living with the disorder that the sky is the limit >> thank you >> reporter: at 31 years old, tony snell is living his dream he's come a long way from growing up in south central, los angeles, and has denied the odds again and again. >> i could have easily joined in some gangs or there is all negative things back then. but basketball kept me on the straight and narrow and kept me on a path that i wanted to be

in. >> reporter: that focus evolved with hard work and determination landed tony in the nba where he played for nine seasons. but it's the family he's building off the court he says d has changed him the most last year, tony and his wife ashley noticed their little boy carter was starting to miss some developmental milestones. >> by 18 months, he still wasn't talking. he was doing a lot of stemming so it's like this kind of movement always has to have like six or seven toys in his hands. usually one is always a basketball so the doctor was like, well, we need to get him tested for autism. >> reporter: for tony, his son's autism diagnosis was a lightbulb moment so he gets diagnosed at what point did you think, you know what, huh, i can relate to some of this as well maybe i should get checked out. >> i was always independent growing up

always being alone i just couldn't connect with people in the personal side of things and i'm like, you know what, if he's diagnosed, then i think i am, too. that gave me the courage to go get checked out. >> reporter: at the age of 31, tony was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. were your surprised? >> i was not surprised because i always felt different. it was just relief like, oh, this is why i am the way i am. so much sense. it was a it just made my whole life make so much sense. it was a clarity, like putting some 3d glasses on >> reporter: autism in the black community is -- first of all, it is not talked about a whole lot. >> right. >> reporter: and it's underdiagnosed considerably. why do you think that is >> you know, we don't have much knowledge of it. and i think some people are nervous to open up people got a lot of stuff going on individually, and it's hard

to open up to things that you -- people might not know about. >> reporter: how do you think your life might have been different had you been diagnosed when you were carter's age >> i think i would have probably been limited with the stuff i could probably do. i don't think i would be in the nba if i was diagnosed with autism autism you know they would probably put a cap on my abilities. >> people don't talk they're definitely not going to tuck about problems in the household, and they're definitely not going to talk about something being different with their child there is already so many factors that are hard enough adding that diagnosis, the resources are not there as easily so where do you even go to start? >> reporter: now tony is making it his mission to stand up as a role model for his son and others, partnering with the special olympics to show that everyone is capable of greatness. >> i want to change lives and inspire people

i want my son to know i have his back you know, like i was a kid and i felt different but now i can show him that i'm right here with you. you know, we're going to ride this thing together. we're going to grow together and we will accomplish a lot of things together. >> great story. >> fascinating conversation. >> tony snell just did a lot of good that's the reason he came forward. tony and ashley struggled to get testing and therapy both for tony and their little boy carter wait lists are often months long with insurance, testing can run upwards of a thousand dollars. so through the tony snell foundation, they're working with groups to help minorities on the spectrum get access, especially those in the inner cities. >> it was fascinating how he said if he was diagnosed as a little kid, he may not be the man he is today.
