right now, san francisco getting help from the feds. the announcement to try to tackle gun violence and the drug crisis. and the giants are down at dodger stadium but it's the crowd outside of the stadium that's catching attention. a controversy about pride night. and they don't want to repeat this. how bay county fairs are stepping up security to make sure it is fun and that there is no fighting. they want it to be a joyous thing. good evening. we start with breaking news out of the north bay. that's it right there.

fire crews battling a large grass fire in napa county. cal fire tweeted this showing the air drop. you can see it on the flames. this is pope valley, an area in the mountains 40 miles north of santa rosa. we just got the update. forward progress has been stopped so far about 103 acres burned. >> here is another look. this is video from the wildfire cameras in the area. cal fire said they have several crews on site. no word of any injuries or damage. cal fire's website said evacuations are underway and there is a threat to power lines and structures. cal fire said the terrain and weather are not helping. let's check in with jeffrey. pope valley. this is a sot we are talking about. and the fire danger has been pushed back because we had all of that rain through winter and early spring. of course those numbers are beginning to warm up.

those temperatures there's pope valley. that's where the fire is burning as we said at least 80 acres, 0% contained. temperature 72, winds light out of the southwest at 6. we could get gusts here tonight 10 to 15. a closer look at the fire location on the 1100 block of snell valley road in pope valley you know that. again that smoke is blowing from the south and the west off to the north and also the east. they are putting a lot of resources on this fire. i wanted it show you this. already, since this fire started, just tonight. 18 fire engines, two takenners, two helicopters, three water tenders, three hand crews and four dosers. looking ahead in the forecast the thing i'm worried about is the wind picking up. tomorrow is 10 to 25. by sunday, we could see gusts

up in that area of 30 to 40 miles an hour. good bet they have all the resources. they know the wind is coming in as we head into sunday. >> very good point. we know that wind will be a problem. thank you. we are tracking this fire very closely. our team is sending out alerts by our free nbc bay area app. it's a great resource. we are posting updates on the website. the other top story. the fight against fentanyl. the feds are now stepping into help san francisco. >> today congresswoman nancy pelosi announcing the department of justice has added san francisco to its operation over drive program. what does that mean? >> reporter: some of the bay area's most prominent political leaders gathered for a rally to end gun violence in the south of market district. this after several recent shootings in the city. >> let's bring up the speaker of the house.

my home girl, nancy pelosi. >> reporter: nancy pelosi talked about the efforts other democrats are leading in congress to curb access to assault weapons and high capacity magazines but the former speaker also had been pushing for help with another crisis here at home. announcing that new law enforcement resources will join the crack down on the city's fentanyl crisis. >> i'm so proud of the biden administration for the leadership role they are playing and the attorney general for recognizing that violence and drug use in our community needs to end. >> reporter: the announcement is something that the mayor and other city officials had been pushing for and the help can't come fast enough. new numbers show in the middle of the current crack down the city set a new record for fentanyl deaths. 63 people died in may, the most in any month since the city's medical examiner started

tracking overdose deaths in january of 2020. federal authorities could be important in breaking up drug dealing operations in part because they aren't bound by certain city policies. >> we know that there are a number of undocumented immigrants who are street level drug dealers. sometimes that's a flash point in san francisco politics but it's not an issue for federal authorities because they aren't subject to that. >> reporter: this week the governor also touted the additional help he dispatched from the california highway patrol, chp officers say they have taken 4.2 kilos of fentanyl in the past six weeks. one case worker said he has seen the increase in people in san francisco's jail since the chp and others arrived. he is skeptical of stepping up arrests to deal with the overdose problem. >> and we are kind of just putting a band-aid on it because these community members will come back out and they don't have skills that they learned in there.

they don't have further education and they are still the l aps e in services. >> reporter: in san francisco. >> san francisco is on track to set a record for deadly overdoses. 63 deaths were tied to fentanyl but overall the city investigated 74 accidental overdoses just last month alone. it was the deadliest month on record since san francisco started releasing the data in 2020. at this pace san francisco could be headed for its deadliest year ever when it comes to drugs. 346 people have died so far. that's a 40% jump compared to this time last year. on that note the mayor put out a post saying she wants the city to be safe and just and the lengthy post she said the focus on public safety and the priority is growing the police force. she said police staffing levels have dropped and it's impacted

the ability to provide coverage. she said it's not just about the police themselves. she said it's also about moving nonlaw enforcement work away from police officers so they can focus on crime and safety. she wants to expand efforts to support small businesses. she wants to expand street cleaning and she wants to deal with the issue of homelessness. tonight a long time berkeley hills resident and one of the vietnam war's most prominent figures has died. daniel ellsburg leaked government documents known as the pentagon papers which cataloged secrets about the ongoing war and that leak triggered a scandal that led to the president resigning. >> reporter: daniel's family said he died peacefully in the east bay after a brief battle with cancer. his famed decision to leak the pentagon papers made him a hero

and villain but everybody agrees it likely altered the course of history and the vietnam war. those papers cataloged government doubt and deceit about the vietnam war. >> i think he will have a mini legacy but for us, for me looking at his legacy i think, you know, giving other people the feeling that they can stand up and tell the truth to is something that he wanted and supported in so many other people. >> reporter: cindy is director of the electronic frontier foundation. >> i met him around 2012. >> interest in the justice department. >> reporter: in the early 70s he revealed himself as the source of the pentagon papers leak. a well placed member of the government military elite who like many had deep doubts about the reasons for the ongoing war

in vietnam and whether it could be won. >> aware that while he was thinking about whether he should go public with the papers which, you know, revealed that the government knew that it could not win in vietnam that people were dying every day and i think -- so i don't think he thought of himself as a hero. >> reporter: barbara lee released a statement saying in part, i'm heartbroken at his loss but i know he has inspired countless people across the world to stand up for what is right. an open letter from daniel's family sums up how so many will remember him saying he was a truth teller, an anti-war activist, a loved husband, father, grandfather, a dear friend to so many and an inspiration to countless more. he will be dearly missed by all of us. christy smith, nbc bay area news. the president arrives in

the bay area next monday and he has a busy schedule. it's about fundraising. on monday he plans to stop in los gatos. the president is also expected to attend a fundraiser in atherton on monday, co hosted by steve wesley. on tuesday he hasan event in marin county. he and the governor will appear at a fundraiser. a handful of migrants who were unexpectedly flown to california and left in sacramento are talking about their experience tonight. as you remember florida delivered 36 undocumented migrants to california. faith leaders said the group had no idea where they were going. many arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs. today a man from one of those first two flight is talking about his experience. he didn't want to be identified but said he had come to texas to seek asylum.

>> he says that he thought they were going to get all sorts of documents and that he was going to be here in an approved way. florida's governor said they helped organize the flights saying sanctuary states like california should help shoulder the responsibility. five of them have connected with their families here in californ 31 are still in sacramento where lawyers are trying to help them with their upcoming asylum cases. the giants are playing the dodgers tonight in la but much of the focus has been off the field. for the last few hours more than a thousand people have been protesting outside dodger stadium. at one point the protestors blocked the main entrance. the religious group called catholics for catholics is taking issue with the dodgers

pride night. before tonight's game they gave a group a community hero award. the organization was formed in san francisco. the organization describe themselves as an activist charity group made up of transpeople who dress as nuns. the catholic group said it's mocking their religion. the dodgers disinvited them earlier this month from the pride event after complaints from religious groups and conservatives but backlash led them to invite them again. volunteers in san francisco brought back a special pride installation on twin peaks the pink triangle can be seen as far as 20-miles and represents what is now a symbol of pride for community. it was once a symbol that the nazis used forced gay people to wear in concentration camps. it is made up of three 220-foot

long sail cloth borders. it'll be on displace through the rest of the month. a san francisco man accused in a deadly house explosion is facing murder charges. darron price was arrested yesterday on suspicious of murder. prosecutors say that he operated a drug lab inside a home n february it exploded, killing his wife and damaging nearby homes. price is facing manslaughter, a spokesperson for the da said prosecutors changed the charge to murder after coming across new evidence in the case, though they aren't saying what it is. okay check the calendar. this is a sure sign that summer is arriving. this is opening night of the alameda county fair. they expect more than 400,000 visitors. after recent issues at another local fair visitor safety is a hot topic. >> the county takes this event

very seriously. in fact alameda county area is ranked among the top 50 in north america. it's a tradition for many local families who say it's a sign of summer. >> we get the season passes right away. we get the wrist bands. >> young is taking his kids to the fair for years. >> just going on all the rides. they get to eat all the food. as much as they k. >> as the parent of two young children is he aware of what happened last month when a series of fights broke out at another county fair. things got bad enough that's fire put in a chaperone policy for teen guests in response to the issues. young said he understands the chaos at big events like this is something you have to prepare for. >> just in the climate we live in now you have to be aware of what you are surrounded by. anywhere you go. fair, supermarket. >> with more than 400,000 expected to attend the fair over the next three weeks,

organizers said that security will be a top priority. >> we have a great relationship with our alameda county sheriff and they are here from open to close and you know they are here to support us, support the community and it's just a family environment. we are all about making memories. >> the fair is also underway this weekend and while they are expecting much smaller crowds, closer to 30 to 50,000 guests they are partnering the county sheriff's department. however, neither fair plans to put in a chaperone policy. >> we want to make sure there is security in place so if there is a problem that we can handle it right here on the ground. >> for young, knowing there is a security presence gives him the peace of mind to create more memories and keep the county fair tradition going with his kids. >> kind of settles my nerves seeing police walk around. if it's like a police officer walking around. someone you would assume would think twice about doing something stupid.

would have been more consequences if the city had a so-called strong mayor form of government. damian has the fall out and it continues. >> it does. you know san jose has what's called a weak mayor form of government meaning that mayor cannot hire or fire department heads. as you mentioned some are wondering if things would be different. if the mayor had the same power as other mayors from big cities. the video from last october raised a lot of eyebrows and questions at san jose city hall. the mayor said heads must roll after watching the video. he said he chose those word was a specific purpose. >> to show a strong message that i expect strong discipline. > he said he was surprised

when we said only the captain was disciplined. he wonders if things would have been different where all the major departments answer directly to the mayor including the police and fire chief. it is a model many big cities use including san francisco and oakland but in san jose that power is given to the city manager. >> to give the mayor the ability to be able to take action in those kind of situations. >> most large cities do that. san jose does not. >> if you give the mayor a few more powers like being able to hire and fire department heads and the city manager that is just really going to give him a lot more authority to carry out his agenda. >> there are pros and cons to both models noting that a city

manager is a nonpolitical manager but they feel the discipline didn't go far enough leaving the current mayor to answer to criticism. >> a lot of people would look to the mayor and say, hey, why aren't you doing something about the fact that these firefighters have turned a fire truck into a frat party? >> they believe there will be a day when san jose adopts a strong mayor form of government. it takes a majority vote by voters to change the city charter. we are live at san jose city hall. nbc bay area. >> thank you. a shooting investigation is underway in san leandro. it happened last night in the night. investigators say that when the deputies arrived they found a man had been shot. he did die at the scene. the coroner is working to identity him. our wealthy peninsula cities finding a loophole and

skirting affordable housing laws? the san mateo civil grand jury has found wealthy cities, found a way to avoid low income affordable housing without breaking the rules. the cities are using adu's to meet the affordable housing targets. you may know them as grammy units or small apartments on the property of a larger home. they are normally used by family members and inlaws. there is no regulation to ensure they go to low income renters. that's the key. the report finds cities like atherton, and woodside plan it meet as much as 80% of their affordable housing targets through backyard adu's. busy day for public work crews. you see what they are doing? they do this all the time. they have to bring in heavy equipment to get rid of wind blow sand that builds up along the great highway. they leveled sand dunes, pushed back the fine minerals. something they have to do every year to maintain the ocean

beach shoreline. they will continue to do it over the next few weeks but don't worry. not on the weekend because it's always so crowded on the great highway on the weekend. that's not something that you want to see. >> and the beach might be crowded this weekend as well. >> chilly. remember to bring that jacket if you are headed out to the beaches. the other thing i want to start off of course is the news we brought you at the top of the show. that is the fire right here in the north bay. this is burning to the south and the east of middle town. right here in pope valley, now, current conditions, winds are relatively light here out of the southwest at six. tomorrow a warmer day up to 80 degrees and wind gusts of 15 to 25. it is at least 80 acres but the latest news we have heard from firefighters is forward progress has been stopped. the exact location on the fire if you are smelling that smoke is right here on snell valley road and the 1100 block.

again, forward progress has been stopped. according to cal fire. we will continue to give you updates of course on this throughout the hour and later on tonight at 11:00. now when it comes to the weather this weekend, it's all about high pressure here. bringing in that warm air. at the same time we are going to see some fog at the coastline and that will keep it chilly at least for beaches. we will start it off here with that fog, some areas of drizzle and then through the afternoon we get in on lots of sun here through the north bay, east bay, south bay and peninsula. then as we move through tomorrow, because we have the fog and the coastline it'll keep temperatures out of the 90s and 100's so we will be kind of in that sweet spot here. look at these numbers. 82 in coopertino. 81 in san jose. for the east bay up to 74 in vallejo. 76 in redwood city. if you are going to the beaches 60 in half moon bay. san francisco, 60 in the

marina. downtown 66 and for the north bay up to 89, sonoma 81. now beyond this on sunday, i -- this is -- certainly something that the firefighters are concerned about. why they have put so many resources on that fire in the north bay. we will see a system come on in and even though temperatures will cool the wind is going to pick up. by sunday night we could see gusts of 20 to 40 miles an hour and the same thing as we head into monday's forecast. sunday and monday, looks like that wind is coming in along with cooler weather. 60s here in san francisco. next seven days. 73 on sunday and we will hold onto 70s. saturday best day to be outside. >> that's tomorrow. >> i don't have to write it down. >> thank you. later tonight we will continue the conversation about race in america. we will tell you the story of a

if you are just tuning in, we are following our live coverage of the united states open so here we are. >> its been two days since flames and explosions destroyed part of a public storage facility. tonight smoke is still rising. >> and a lot of looming questions about how this happened. were fireworks involved what happened to those people whose belongings were destroyed? >> reporter: today arson investigators returned to a public storage facility hit by fire in san jose. they are trying to find a cause and point of start for the fire as well as figure out how

fireworks and someone arrested as a person of interest fit into what happened. meanwhile steady stream of people who rented storage units in the building including doug and kara came by today, still in a days. >> still dealing the fact that my life was in that 10 by 10- foot storage and now it's gone. >> reporter: they said they had a chat with a public storage rep. >> start talking insurance and i said we only have $5,000 coverage through your company or whatever company you required us to sign up through. he said up to $5,000. i'm thinking this is -- it's well beyond that. >> reporter: about 70 firefighters responded to the blaze that included explosions by fireworks though they don't know if those were a cause or in a storage unit. it caused a children's summer camp to be canceled for the day at a community center nearby as members waited to see if their

building would catch fire too. >> it's a little daunting. definitely. >> reporter: did you think that the facility was affected? >> we didn't know. we were hoping that it wasn't and thankfully it wasn't. of course the smoke is a little scary for the kids. >> reporter: they did not provide new details on the person arrested as a person of interest but doug said he wants them to check into why so many people were allowed to abuse their rental unit privileges. >> people rebuilding their engines and their cars inside of units and some people being around a lot like maybe they are living in and out of it. >> reporter: public storage is still keeping a low profile. a manager declined to comment on the situation but to say the company is cooperating with investigators. in san jose. robert honda. nba bay area news. >> we want to tell you about that breaking news. that wildfire burning in napa county. cal fire said the fire has burned just over 100 acres.

the good news, cal fire said the crews have stopped the forward progress. itburning in pope valley in the vaca mountains about 40 miles northeast of santa rose a it's near the lake. this is video of cal fire showing one of several afternoon air drops on the flames. no reports on injuries or homes being destroyed. tonight we are learning more about a suspected murder in fremont. first responders were called to an apartment just south of lake elizabeth. inside they found the body of a mother and her two young children. police believe it was a murder suicide. at the request of the father they released the names of the victims. the father said he wanted the names released to raise awareness about the importance of mental health services when people are in crisis. tomorrow a memorial service

for alexis gabe whodisappeared last january. her partial remains were found in a remote part of amador. it's believed her ex boyfriend, marshall jones killed her. he was then shot and killed by police trying to arrest him. gabe's family is inviting the public to the memorial at the diablo valley cremation. the covid vaccine this fall won't be the same as the one you got before. the fda recommended manufactureerns make a single strain shot that targets subvariants xbb1.5. it is the dominant strain and the most immune evasive variant to date. the warriors making a big move today. they have a new gm. they actually promoted from

the department of justice has released the findings of a federal investigation into the minneapolis police department, launched after the murder of george floyd. today's report paints a picture

of a city and police department mired in a pattern of excessive force and racial discrimination. here is alice barr. >> three years after george floyd was murdered by a minneapolis police officer touching off protests and demands for policy change the united states department of justice today releasing a report finding that the minneapolis police department and the city itself engaged in a pattern or practice of excessive force and racial discrimination that violates the constitution. >> mpd stopped black and native american people nearly six times more than white people in situations that did not result in arrest or citation. >> the officers involved in george floyd's death were all fired and charged but the doj found other incidents of unjustified deadly force, unreasonable use of tasers and officers routinely disregarding the safety of people in their

light out of the southwest at six but tomorrow we go back up to 80. we could get into wind gusts here at 15 to 25 and potentially some stronger gusts by sunday and monday. thatly detail here in a minute and a half. as we roll into the weekend forecast tomorrow is the last day of some of this 80-degree weather through the inland valleys from this area of high pressure. we will still keep that fog at the coastline. classic california day with our micro climate in full effect. temperatures from the 50s to the 80s for those daytime highs. through tomorrow morning, if -- you don't have a lot on your list, you don't want to set at alarm clock. this is good weather to sleep in. we will have more of those low clouds back here for tomorrow morning and some spotty drizzle and then right here through the afternoon we get a lot of sunshine. santa rosa, napa, concord, oakland down to san jose and if you are going to the beaches we get that typical foggy weather back with us. morning numbers starting off

the coolest after a marin, napa. we will be down to 53 in santa rosa. we are a little bit milder here for the south bay with 59 in san jose. daytime highs for tomorrow we have a few isolated 80s coming in. right back here toward livermore. 85, concorresponded, some low 80s san jose and morgan hill. going to the coastline. you are right here at 66 in san francisco and 60 in half moon bay. cooling temperatures down. a big drop for us on sunday and pushing in the wind. i do think this wind could be a problem up toward parts of the northern coastline. from 20 to 45 miles an hour.
