tomorrow. talk about that coming up in about 15 minutes. kira, back to you. >> all right. cinthia, thanks. we begin with breaking news out of los angeles county where eight people have been shot at a home in the city of carson. police got the call just after midnight early this morning. six victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance. another two took themselves. the sheriff's department says they have no information on a person of interest. our los angeles sister station knbc is on the scene. we will bring you more as this story develops. back here in the bay area, a deadly shooting early this morning in oakland. it happened around 3:15 this morning on 39th avenue and mara street just outside of the campus of the global family elementary school. police closed 39th avenue from that street to carrington street as the investigation continues. also we're learning more about a crash this morning.

menlo park fire says one car crashed into three parked cars, and left a building damaged. it happened on fifth and waverly in redwood city. you can see this photo here. the car slammed into that building. crews say two people were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. utilities are shut off and building inspectors are en route to inspect damage on that building. chp will handle the investigation. and the search is o f the driver who hit and killed a pedestrian last night in the east bay. the hit-and-run happened around 7:00 p.m. nea foothill boulevards and vicksburg avenue in oakland about a block from horace mann elementary school. so f we know the victim is an adult, and died at the hospital. if you have any information on the driver you're asked to call opd. happening today, a memorial service for alexis gabe. the 23-year-old vanished in

january of 2022 after leaving her oakley home to visit her ex-boyfriend in antioch. one year later her partial remains were found in january of this year during a volunteer search in amador county. an autopsy and forensic test completed earlier this month. investigators say gabe's ex-boyfriend marshall curtis jones killed her, but he was shot and killed when officers tried to arrest him near seattle. the public memorial for alexis gabe will be held at diablo valley funeral home on monument boulevard in concord. it begins at 3:00 this afternoon and there will be a mass at 6:30. a san francisco man accused of a deadly house explosion earlier this year now faces murder charges in the death of his wife. he was arrested again thursday on suspicion of murder.

back in february he rass was arrested after the house he lived in exploded killing his wife, injuring her caretaker and damagening a nearby home. he was operating an illegal drug lab at the home in the outer sunset district. he was already facing involuntary manslaughter charges along with child endangerment and other charges. the district attorney's office says prosecutors added that murder charge after come ago cross new evidence in the case. price will be held in custody until his next court appearance next week. now to a story you'll see only on nbc bay area. there were moments of panic on an alaska airlines flight as the plane was about to land at sfo. a passenger tells "today in the bay "about the frightening encounter as airline officials tell her it's no big deal. >> reporter: more than 1,000 flights go in and out of sfo. thursday night --

>> awful. >> reporter: avery described this flight returning from l.a. in final descent. >> all of a sudden, the most abrupt maneuver occurred in which the front of the airplane, the nose of the airplane, just went way up, and the jets went full force. at that very second that it started, the lights went out. >> reporter: lieberman said in all about a minute but felt like an eternity. back in may two close calls at sfo ar pilots spotted a southwest airlines jet passing across a runway on which other planes were cleared to land. close calls, faa announced earlier in the year it would invest 100 million in airport improvements though not at sfo reducing numbers of runway incursions. >> felt like a fighter

experience. >> reporter: the airline said they needed to do a go-around. the faa says these are safe and routine procedures in which the pilots and air traffic controllers are working together to make sure that an unsafe condition doesn't occur. doug rice is a retired airline pilot and looked at the records for this particular alaska airline's flight. >> the aircraft involved higher than expected and a little faster. he got a little too close to a large aircraft that was in front of him. too close was probably three to three and a half miles away from an aircraft that was landing in front of them. and they might have needed four miles or something on that order. so you're not talking about a critical situation. >> reporter: in a statement alaska airlines says the go-around was done as a safety precaution because of congestion and added at no point was safety of the flight compromised. commend pilots for quick thinking. >> i think it's watered down quite a bit. somebody has to get to the

bottom of this before next time -- before the next incident isn't just a close call. >> reporter: reporting for "today in the bay." developing now, a wildfire in napa county. this is video of the snell fire. it's currently 103 acres and 30% contained. firefighters are strengthening their containment lines and putting out hot spots. this is in poke valley. that's an area in the mountains about 40 miles northeast of sant rosa. we have another look at this time lapse video from wildfire cameras in that area. calfire says evacuations are ounder way. no word of injuries or damage. san francisco will now be getting federal help in the fight against fentanyl. congresswoman nancy pelosi announced yesterday that the department of justice has added the city to its "operation

overdrive" program. that means new federal law enforcement resources will be added to the fight against the city's fentanyl crisis. >> and i'm so proud of the biden administration for the leadership role they're playing and the attorney general for recognizing that violence and drug use in our community needs to come to an end. >> it's something the mayor and other city officials have been pushing for. new numbers show the city recently set a new record for fentanyl deaths. in may, 63 people died. that's the most deaths in any month since the medical examiner started tracking overdose death fls 2020. later today, former speaker nancy pelosi is being honored for her work on serving people who struggle with aids. the national aids memorial grove is commemorating pelosi for her service in congress more than 30 years. the grove, you might know, is a public space dedicated for millions of americans who

struggled and ultimately succumbed to aids. pelosi is planting a tree and serving as guest speaker in their honor. the event starts at 9:00 a.m. in golden gate park. the alameda county fair is back. it is ranked one of the top 50 fairs in all of north america. it attracts hundreds of thousand hs of fairgoers every year, but after problems at another bay area fair, safety is now a top concern. "today in the bay's" tom jensen was there and tells us about the plans to keep people safe. ♪♪ >> reporter: con function opened the concert series friday night and after the sun went down -- the sky came alive with the fireworks and drone show on the fair's opening night. organizers expect close to 425,000 visitors over the next three weeks and hope it avoid the teen fighting that disrupted

other fairs, like the contra costa county fair last month, and finally enacted a chaperone policy there for minors to avoid more fighting. in response the contra costa county fair enacted a chaperone policy for teens saying safety will be a priority. >> a great relationship with alameda county sheriffs. they're here from open to close and here to support us, here to support the community and like i said, a family environment all about making memories in the community here. >> reporter: we saw sheriff's deputies spread across the fairground today. same with the smaller solano county fair, which also opened today. >> primary goal, security any place so if there's a problem we can handle it right here on the grounds. >> best of los angeles. totally get it. you know? just got to be careful. >> reporter: mary and her brother home for father's day weekend and taking in the fair for the first time ever with their friend who hasn't been since the start of the pandemic.

welcome back. it's 7:14 on your saturday morning. cloudy skies over the oakland colosseum. 70s expected across oakland today, and we're showing you this view, because we do have good news. the a's are staying in oakland. at least for one more season. that's according to a new report from a las vegas review-journal. a source tells the newspaper the team will play out its lease at the oakland coliseum. the lease is up in december of 2024. after that, no word where the a's might play while they build their billion dollar ballpark in las vegas. that in vegas ballpark won't be ready until 2028. league owners, by the way, still need to vote to approve the a's move. pride night in los angeles was met with protests at dodger stadium last night.

this before the giants/dodgers game. more than 1,000 people marched to the stadium calling it a "prayer procession." they lined the sidewalks at the main entrance holding religious signs and flags. at one point the group was in the street blocking the main entrance to dodger stadium. catholics for catholics organized the demonstration and opposed the dodgers inviting the sisters of per pech woo indulgence to pride night and giving out the community hero award. the sisters, by the way, was formed in san francisco and describe themselves as an activist charity group made up of trans and queer people hoop who dress as nuns. the catholics say they mock their religion. >> i have kids i'm a parent and don't believe in that. i just believe, they should dress in other costumes or stay united in other ways. >> because it's really important we stand up for what we believe

in, and somebody is not being nice. >> earlier this month the dodgers uninvited the sisters for the pride event after complaints from religious groups and conservatives, bupt you may recall backlash from lgbtq groups and others led the dodgers to reinvite them and honor them with that award. back here locally, the pink triangle is back on twin peaks in san francisco. volunteers worked to put out the outline of a huge triangle yesterday. this is video here from yesterday. once a symbol of nazi forcing gape people to wear that pink triangle now represents pride for the lgbtq+ community. organizers expect to finish that build today. once it's up the triangle can be seen for about 20 miles. it will be up for the rest of pride month. and happening today, african american heritage will be on display in the streets of downtown san jose. all part of juneteenth

celebrations. the african american community service agency is hosting its 42nd annual juneteenth homecoming event. this is video from last year's festival. south first street in san jose filled with music, food, all sorts of vendors. the festival starts at noon. president biden, by the way, made juneteenth a national holiday back in 2021. and trending this morning, a reality show is coming to the nbc family of networks. the show is called "the big d" with the "d" referring to divorce. the reality show looks to give those who are divorced a second chance. ten divorced couples will come together on a special island retreat. while their ex is present on the island, they will try to find love. the show's host wanted a reality show with people who are divorced because it's a thing not a lot of people talk about. >> there hasn't been a reality dating show that's really talked

the tri-valley, south bay, getting plenty sunshine mixing out to that cloud cover out along the coast. if you have any plans to take dad out there, make sure that he's bundled up, because it's going to be chilly as the day goes on, and we'll see high clouds return going into the evening hours. speaking of evening hours, perfect opportunity to get out there to the alameda county fair in pleasanton. peaking in the 80s. wear the sunscreen, hats and drink plenty of water as you enjoy the fair. far as the rest of the bay area, 60, along the coast. 70s parts of the north bay and peninsula. see 82 in fairfield with 84 down here in morgan hill. today is the last day of those warm temperatures we've seen from middle of the week onwards, because tomorrow we have some major changes ahead. look at how those temperatures drop. anywhere from about 10 degrees plus, and this is because we have a low pressure system. yes. this time of year dropping in from the pacific northwest.

we'll see areas of oregon, washington, if you have plans to go see dad up there, they're going to see that low pressure system start to dip, and we will see that cloud cover and the wind start to pick up. even as we go on into this afternoon. i know we've put out the plants to get plenty of sunshine. that patio furniture. you might want to buckle it down, because as we go into tomorrow, look at these wind gusts. san francisco upwards of 40 mile-an-hour winds as we go on into the second half of the day on sunday. those father's day plans tomorrow, those picnics, yeah. they're going to be breezy. make sure you hold on to those dad hats out there. even along the coastline into parts of livermore and down here in san jose, going into monday. i think monday those winds won't be as strong, but the temperatures will definitely start to dip, because look at we go into our long-range modeled. seeing temperatures, these conditions stick like that for the west coast, but if you have any summer plans going on into maybe the south, going to see very high temperatures there.

in about an hour from now 1,600 students will graduate from santa clara university including one very special 14-year-old. he's not even old enough to drive. "today in the bay's" bob redell has more with the youngest person ever to graduate from the university. >> reporter: kira, talking about kairan quazi. a 14-year-old boy from plerchten with an iq ranking in the top 1 percentile in the general population. most peers just graduated middle school today he receives his bachelor's degree with a job already lined up at one of the country's top space companies.

kairan quazi was speaking full sentences at just 2 years of age. age 9 his parents had him tested and found him to be very gifted. >> very early age recognizing mathematical modules i was impressed with and thought, okay, this is norm. >> reporter: but it wasn't. a pediatrician recommended college to keep up with his accelerated learning. livermore and three years at santa clara university, kairan just 14 years old graduates with an engineering degree and job as a software engineer for spacex, a highly competitive company with an acceptance rate of less than 1% a. conventional belief that i'm missing out on some sort of noble vision of childhood, but i'm really here to tell people that that's not true. again, outside of academics i've had a normal life.

it's currently at 103 acres burned and 30% contained. firefighters say they're strengthening theirinment lines and putting out hot spots. this is in an area in the mountains about 40 miles northeast of santa rosa and we have another look thanks to this time lapse video from wildfire cameras in that area. calfire's website does say evacuations are under way and there is a threat to power lines and structures. so no word of any injuries nor damage. arson investigators spent several hours in san jose yesterday at this public storage facility that went up in flames wednesday. they're looking for evidence trying to determine the cause and the fire's point of origin. during the fire you could see and hear explosions going off. we now know those were caused by fireworks. investigators don't know if the fireworks caused the fire, though. they have arrested a person of

interest in connection with that fire. the man who leaked the pentagon papers has died. daniel ellsberg was a prominent figure following the vietnam war. his family says he died peacefully at his east bay home in kensington after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. during the vietnam war ellsberg released the so-called "pentagon papers." those 7,000 pages revealed government doubt and deceit about the war. >> for me, looking at his legacy, i think you know, given other people the feeling that they can stand up and tell the truth, too, is something that he quantitied and really supported in so many other people. >> after the war, ellsberg continued to support other whistle-blowers and also became an anti-war activist and author and paved the way for decades of investigative journalism. daniel ellsberg was 92 years

old. researchers say there's potential progress against a type of brain cancer that currently has no cure. clinical trials of a vaccine for glioblastoma are under way and so far giving patients precious extra time. nbc's anne thompson reports. >> this is the glioblastoma? >> that's it. what you see is in part, tip of the iceberg. >> reporter: glioblastoma is the deadliest form of brain cancer, survival rate of 14.6 months. grim news this doctor delivered for a quarter century. >> the problem is that that will eventually come back. >> reporter: microscopic cells remain even after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. now early results from an experiment cancer vaccine showed potential to delay recurrence and double life expectancy. >> it's what 14 to 16 months for

sanctuary, designed to pudge religious leaders to do more to address abuse and protect their congregations. just last month our investigative unit exposed how sexual violence within the aapi community often goes unreported. this woman will be one of the panelists who's with the nonprofit freely in hope, working to equipped survivors with sexual abuse with education and counseling. she says she herself was abused buys a lieder in her church at 19. >> i went to, you know, other leadership in my church and said look what are you doing about this? this person is doing this, and everyone was, like, there's no way he could do that. you probably seduced him. so as a 19-year-old i probably seduced think man? probably me. probably this is now -- because everyone would defend him.

sunshine while we have it. the warriors made a big move hiring a new general manager to replace bob myers and promoted from within. a familiar name for warriors fans, mike dunleavy jr. dunleavy was drafted third overall by the warriors in 2002. he played five seasons with the team before getting traded to the indiana pacers. dunleavy jr. came back to the warriors in 2018 in the front office, and has been working his way up the last five years. the warriors tweeted the good news and will formally introduce dunleavy on monday. the giants/dodgers rivalry was in full effect last night with an extra inning thriller as more than 45,000 screaming fans watched. at dodger stadium we saw tennis legend billie jean king. part of the dodgers ownership group. her brother randy moffitt pitched for the giants in the 1980s.
