and good morning, i'm jessica lateen >> glad you are with us, i'm frances rivera we begin with the extreme weather gripping the south as of midnight nearly half a million customers were still without power from texas to tennessee. some of the worst outages are in oklahoma with over 200,000 in the dark the recent severe weather has been linked to at least five deaths across the south. governor greg abbott toured the damage in perry town, texas, an ef-3 tornado, he signed ato disaster declaration and said he had never seen a level of decimation to a town like this >> well, the people in this area have gone through over the past couple of days, it's nothing short of horrific. >> today parts of texas and louisiana remain under excessive heat warnings, cooling centers opened up in houston and new orleans. the heat index in some areas could reach as high as 116

degrees. another holiday weekend disrupted by gun violence across the country. just west of chicago one person was killed and at least 20 people were shot in the suburb of willow brook. shots were fired into a crowd that had gathered for a juneteenth celebration no suspects have been identified. one person of interest is in custody in st. louis where teenagers were having a party in an office building and a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed, nine others were hurt, they range in age from 15 to 19. >> ten of our babies shot downtown and a young life lost it's every parents worst nightmare tenfold. two people were killed and three injured at a music festival in washington state on saturday police say a suspect shot randomly into the crowd at a campground before being taken into custody. five people were killed in a horrific car crash in minneapolis. police say a speeding driver exited a highway, ran a red

light and slammed into a car with five young women inside all five were pronounced dead at the scene. the suspect ran from the crash scene before being taken into custody. a homicide team is investigating. as republicans are forced to reckon with the legal challenges of former president trump president biden took to the stage for his first campaign rally. we go to brie jackson in washington what is the latest from the gop. >> reporter: good morning. the contenders for the republican nomination for president continue to deal with the fallout from last week's second arraignment of the party's front runner former president donald trump trump's one time running mate former vice president mike pence sat down with nbc's chuck todd on "meet the press" over the weekend where he criticized his former ally as having abandoned the principles they ran on together >> look, in 2016 donald trump promised to govern as a

conservative, and i'm proud to say that we did for four years under the trump/pence administration, but he makes no such promise today >> reporter: meanwhile, a renewed emphasis on the question of other candidates' support for the former president as his legal troubles continue to mount. while multiple gop contenders have already promised to pardon trump if they were to take the white house, former arkansas governor asa hutchinson on sunday warned of the possibility that trump could pardon himself. notably in 2018 trump even claimed he had the absolute right to pardon himself. vocal trump critic chris christie on sunday criticized the republican national committee and their requirement for candidates to pledge their support to the party's eventual nominee, calling it a useless idea earlier this year christie made his own pledge to never support donald trump again all right. brie, we want to turn to the other side, it's been two months since president biden announced

his campaign for reelection. what can you tell us about the early stages of his next run for the white house? >> reporter: so president biden held one of the first events for his 2024 campaign over the weekend. after touring the collapsed section of i-95 in philadelphia on saturday the president headed to the pennsylvania convention center for a campaign rally, populated by union members biden who often tauts his presidency as the most pro-labor administration in history took the stage to reaffirm his support for america's unions just a day after he received the endorsement of the afl-cio the country's largest union. later today the president will travel to california where he will attend a number of campaign receptions and push his administration's actions on combating climate change. >> brie, thank you. the u.s. celebrates juneteenth today, two years after it was recognized as a federal holiday. over the weekend the country held coast to coast events in honor of the day that

commemorates the freedom of enslaved african americans despite the celebrations retired civil rights leader reverend william j. barber ii cautioned americans against acknowledging the holiday with what he called jumping around and drinking, instead saying it should be a day of inquiry and activism. the emancipation proclamation will be a permanent fixture in the national archives rot rotunda. the document written in 1863 by president lincoln is currently on a temporary display to celebrate juneteenth. >> in a between a national archivist called the decision a historic day for all americans it will be displayed alongside the declaration of independence, the constitution, and the bill of rights. north korea has commented publicly on their failed military spy satellite launch about three weeks ago. state media reports officials at a workers party summit harshly criticized those involved with the launch preparations.

offensive which has really seen modest progress but not the kind of overwhelming momentum that many of ukraine's allies had hoped they would see from this long promised push by ukraine to retake territory the defense ministry in ukraine saying it's about 43 square miles that ukraine has been able to liberate from russian control in their counteroffensive so far, but president zelenskyy in his evening address describing this as a real methodical campaign, saying step by step, inch by inch, mile by mile they are working to retake this territory back from russia, frances. >> josh, we understand there are new theories about how the cdam was destroyed. >> reporter: there appears to be a car laden with explosives prior to the destruction of that dam. that dam was under russian control.

evan leak from our lexington affiliate is in the kitchen. >> fresh wheat, turn the mill on >> reporter: bob perry has been on the culinary grind for the better part of 40 years, 17 of them as the chef in residence for uk's college of agriculture. >> my tenure at uk has been the best of all. i've been involved in lots of different stuff, involved in bourbon, neuro gastronomy now and it has taken me into space. >> reporter: it's an opportunity that is truly out of this world. >> they grow organic garlic, they bring it in here, we slice it, put it on these trays, dehydrate it, it takes about a week and then i grind it into garlic powder. >> reporter: chef perry is on the cutting edge of innovating how to get higher quality food to astronauts when they go into space. >> we are looking into the mars mission, seven months to get there, a year on the planet and seven months to get back nobody has ever been in space longer than three weeks without being resupplied

what neuro gastronomy is looking at as far as space goes is everything else involved in eating and food. >> reporter: chef perry has worked and brainstormed with some of the top names in nasa to break down food on a near molecular level from how to get fresh medicinal herbs to astronauts to condensing food to fit the needs for space travel. >> anything that goes on has to be weighed they know exactly to the tiniest fraction how much everything weighs on the space station. a lot of their food is dehydrated it's been fun playing around with this to make different foods for different applications. >> reporter: it's as much play as it is work for chef perry, letting him view food in a whole new way while helping those getting a glimpse at the final frontier. >> it's an education for me, too. that's the beauty of working at a division i universities is lots of cool people around doing lots of neat stuff and for my part everybody eats. >> our thanks to evan leak for that report. he is hoping that everybody will be able to eat well.
