5:02 am
downtown san jose, you'll notice we have some clouds there. but this is all that cooling from the system. now, this is a dry system, which you can see here satellite/radar, if i zoom this in, we have activity to our north. this is causing the cooldown and the kick-up in the winds as well. not a lot of fog, novato 55, santa rosa, 50. look at the wind speeds. i took this time stamp forward to about 7:30 because overnight we saw winds gusting up to 45, 50 plus, especially for the higher peaks. at 7:30, we still have some 20-, 30-plus-mile-per-hour winds, and advancing through the afternoon, the winds are expected to remain pretty gusty pretty much for the remainder of the evening before they taper off. i'll take you through that timing in just a second. but first, we have to get a look at how that traffic is doing with mike. >> it's going smoothly, but it's also going, well, back and forth
5:03 am
as far as the camera goes. on the san mateo bridge, we can see the impact of the wind that vianey is talking about. the drive is all right, still well populated. remember, this is a holiday weekend for many businesses. we'll have fewer xhultders early in the morning, but we saw a good flow there. the map showing you the yellow highlights throughout the altamont pass, oakland, and san francisco. we're seeing these area where is the weather index says you might get blown a bit over the mountains. no problem across the san mateo or the bay bridge with a smooth drive. golden gate bridge also smooth. but less impact from the wind right now. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking this morning, san francisco police are still looking for some of the people involved in a chaotic rolling shoot-out. this is between two cars. >> it started out with one of the ti's most popular tourist areas around fisherman's wharf as many enjoyed father's day outings. police say it started a little l before 7:00 last night.
5:04 am
that's when people in two cars started firing at each other near popular pier 39 at beach street and the embarcardero. it ended when one of the vehicles crashed at howard street. in between, investigators say the gunfire continued. in all, six people are injured, two victims are young girls police believe were struck by one of the cars while crossing the street. four were injured by gunfire, including two believed to have been involved in the gun battle, one whom survived life-threatening injuries. one witness says he was walking near pier 35 where the two young girls were struck as they walked their bikes across the street. he shared photos of the aftermath saying he saw one suv speeding about 60 miles an hour, striking and injuring members of the same family. >> we saw a girl get hit by the black suv as he was going in the middle section of the road where the tracks are. but they hit the girl and she just flew over the car.
5:05 am
she started staggering up and tripping all over the place. all of her family wasdispersed over the street. >> the gun battle was not random and the people in the two cars knew each other. so far, no arrests have been made. but, again, we know at least two of the gunfire victims are believed to have been involved. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is talking with police. he'll have a live report at 5:30. stick with us on nbc bay area as we continue to bring you the latest on air and online. pete suratos is at the scene and will have that live update in 30 minutes. download our free nbc bay area news app to get updates sent to your phone. and today, president joe biden is making a stop in the bay area to talk about climate investments. >> right on his heels, a republican who will certainly want to replace him also expected to make a stop in the
5:06 am
bay area. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez will be at the field when the president arrives. she joins us in studio this morning with more on the president's trip. >> we expected the president is going to talk big money to address climate change. the president will arrive at moffett field later this morning, then head to palo alto's lucy evans preserve. he'll talk about the $600 million he wants to help communities adapt to climate change. we're talking about things like rising sea levels and storm surges but also protecting the power grid and other infrastructure from extreme weather events including wildfires. one environmental leader says the president needs to make this a bipartisan issue. [ no audio ] >> the president may also be pledging more money to address climate change, but he's also
5:07 am
helping to get money for his re-election campaign. he'll attend a los gatos fund-raiser founded by reed hoffman and microsoft chief technology officer kevin scott. tickets start at $6,500. he'll attend a fund-raiser in atherton. tomorrow, governor newsom joints the president at a fund raiser in kentfield. the bay area's deep pockets will also draw florida governor ron desantis. the mercury news reports he will attend a fund-raiser in woodside in the bay area. we can confirm that sacramento real estate developer steven eggert is hosting a private fund-raiser in sacramento. the republican front-runner is still former president donald trump. according to a survey, more than 2,000 people, 45% said if the election were held today they would vote for donald trump. 39% said they would vote for biden.
5:08 am
15% said they were not sure. those numbers are different from just about a month ago. >> the thing about it, too, a lot of those candidates are coming to california because they have to get so much money to stay in the race, right? >> we have a lot of money here in political circles. we're called the atm of america, right? and this is really -- my goodness, campaign season is heating up. we've got a little bit of everything right here in the bay area. >> right. that sacramento visit could get really interesting because this is the first time that ron desantis will be in california since that transport of 36 migrants to sacramento, dropped off there, and later his office admitted they were involved in that. so that could be very interesting. >> well, you will be keeping a close eye on that. thank you so much. as the campaign season heats up, you can get the very latest judgment dates on our website. we are posting the latest details there and the president's visit online. head to nbcbayarea.com and click on the clink in our home page.
5:09 am
for the first time in three years, the shadow cliffs regional recreation area in pleasanton is finally back open for swimmers. it's another sign that drought conditions have improved. the lake just refilled with water over the past couple of weeks. the east bay regional parks district says it started an agreement in may to buy extra water to bring recreation back to the lake. swimming and boating there stopped three years ago. the first was all due to the pandemic, but then the conditions continued due to severe drought. >> everybody was happy. it's a warm day. everybody wanted to come out and barbecue. we're all happy. >> i went a little bit there. it was nice. we were there for quite some time there. >> fishing from the shore is allowed, but boating not just yet. the park district expects boating to resume later on in
5:10 am
june. entry is free. in honor of juneteenth today, there are several events in the bay area. park rangers at some regional parks in the east bay will lead nature hikes this morning. this includes marshall regional park in concord and big break regional shoreline in oakley. marin city will host a juneteenth festival starting at 9:00 this morning. in san jose at the children's discovery museum, there is a juneteenth celebration for arts and cultures. and a concert in the castro district will celebrate allies from the lgbtq community. that starts at 7:00 tonight. >> juneteenth, a lot of festivities and festivals. this weekend, the weather was nice. a little cooler than-in san francisco. how does it shape up for us today? >> the cooler weather is going to remain because we had a cold front last night. but it was a drier system, no rain out of it. but the temperatures, that's the reason why it was a little cooler. but also the wind. probably the most noticeable aspect of this weekend.
5:11 am
and we will continue to see that wind again. we had a chance of drizzle early on, but it looks like now the factor will be the wind. let's look at san francisco. beautiful live look right now. you can see that sunrise not just there yet, but hour-by-hour forecast for the morning, we'll bake up in the 50s. you're also going to notice we'll stay breezy, especially near the hills, gusty winds in through the afternoon, and daytime highs today are only expected to see 60s by noon and you'll notice upper 60s, low 70s by the time we get to 3:00. definitely below seasonal for today. i have a look at your extended outlook in a few minutes. first a check of gas prices. mike? >> trying to get the best prices we have. the best price in santa clara county. $4 clnt 17 at the shop on los gatos boulevard. a&a express on amador valley.
5:12 am
but on the peninsula, the best is up to $4.35 at a&a. i don't know if there's any relation. thank you for sharing. we talked about the wind registering, the pale yellow. discovery bay impacted by the wind but not by any slowing. the altamont pass is the only area you have slowing and the windmills there. looks like they're well placed. this is richmond. it's in the east bay. we'll show you both. richmond bridge no problem but maybe breezy. back to you. a revolutionary step in health care. next on "today in the bay," the new artificial kidney one bay area scientist has invented and how it could potentially help chp thousands of lives. and a bay area ceo says he wants to be more like elon musk, and his employers and users not happen. i
5:13 am
5:14 am
5:15 am
good morning. it is 5:14 right now in san jose, 54 degrees. the temperature trend will only max out in the upper 60s, low 70s for most of the bay area, expect clearing and sunshine. we'll have the full forecast in few minutes. and this is dublin. there we go. traveling westbound toward the dublin interchange, dublin in the distance. we expect lighter traffic for the early commute because it is a holiday off for many
5:16 am
businesses around the area for juneteenth. we'll see if the bay bridge is back up just yet. good morning, mike. it's a holiday so the stock markets are closed today. juneteenth became america's newest federal holiday in june of 2021. it was too quick for the stock market to address, so they did trade that year, they stayed open. starting last year, they closed like they do today. a ceo gave an interview over the weekend where he said he was inspired by elon musk's handling of twitter. many reddit users are angry at steve huffman and this made them angrier. it's his task to make them profitable as they eye a public offering, probably causing huge layoffs. musk cut so many, he had to ask some to come back, and he's refused to pay rent on some twitter offices as well.
5:17 am
he's throwing his support behind joe rogan after he demanded a prominent doctor engage in a debate over vaccines. rogan's bosses at spotify if told rogan not to broadcast false claims about vaccines. they've taken down about 100 of his podcasts. he did it again with an interview with robert kennedy jr. when a doctor objected to the false claims they were making. rogan said he'd pay $100,000 to the doctor's favorite charity if the doctor would come debate. the doctor, who's been on the podcast before, refused saying a debate would be pointless. elon musk, who had absolutely no involvement in this argument, then amplified many of rogan's and kennedy's claims. musk told his twitter followers the doctor, who's a professor of virology at baylor, is afraid to debate. many twitter users are pointing this out, if you have a debate with buzz aldrin and a guy who thinks the moon is made of
5:18 am
cheese, how do you even have a debate? there is nothing -- >> right. >> there's nothing to debate. that's why this doctor is, like, no, i'm not going to come on and debate this. >> did he lose his check? >> yeah, almost the opposite. >> sometimes he's given people checks just to make them mad. we'll see. thanks, scott. new this morning, a bay area scientist has invented an artificial kidney that someday might work in humans. as you can see in this video, the implantable device is the size of a smartphone and made of silicone wafers that are used in semiconductors. the device, which has been implanted in pigs, has been successful in mimicking the key functions of a kidney transplant by producing europe and removing waste and toxins from the blood. the doctor from ucsf who developed the artificial kidney says depending on the funding it could be a number of years
5:19 am
before one is available for humans, but a device like this could save thousands of lives. right now there are more than 3 million people worldwide who haven't received a live kidney transplant and must rely on dialysis to survive. >> i feel very confident that's what's going on around the country, as we get the patients, as we get the researchers, as we get information, as we get society to focus on this area, that kidney failure doesn't have to be a death sentence. you can get better treatment than dialysis. you have you can overcome the scarcity of kidney transplant donors available. and we'll be able to deliver a device that a nephrologist or a transplant surgeon is able to provide to their patient when needed. >> dr. roy says no batteries are required. his artificial kidney would run off the person's blood pressure. and there would be no need for anti-rejection drugs, which are
5:20 am
required in live transplants. big step. 5:19 right now. a big letdown at the box office over the weekend for both "the flash" and pixar. this is as ciderman dominated for a third week in a row. >> spider-man continued to attack ticket buyers at father's day weekend at the box office. it brought in another $27 million, tallying almost $490 million globally since the june 2nd release. although warner brothers' "the flash" came out on top, that film was anything but flashy, hauling in just $55 million in its opening weekend. pixar's latest release, "elemental," came in at number two at $29.5 million. it expects to have the second lowest opening in the studio's history. a lot of animation taking over.
5:21 am
>> we went to the drive-in, first time for kids. they said it was great, it was fun. "spider verse" is what we saw." we enjoyed the movie. i want to see it in the theater again because i couldn't see. >> yeah. a lot of people i was talking to want to go to the movies today. >> i still want to see the little mermaid. >> i saw it. it was good. >> how was the weather at the drive-in? >> it was great for us. looking closer around this part. >> if you have a convertible and you're going to be out tonight, the wind will mess your hair and your popcorn will probably get everywhere. >> popcorn forecast. >> i think you'll be all right. let's take a look in san francisco. this is such a beautiful shot. i mean, look at the colors and the sky. current temperatures are going to be in the 50s, but i do want to get you started with your hour-by-hour because if you notice by 7:00 a.m., we're still going to be in the 50s, but we have that cold front that swept
5:22 am
through late last night, bringing a little bit of rain up to the north and also just to the east of us. so primarily a dry system. but it did definitely kick up the wind. we saw wind gusts upwards of 50 plus. we could see that again, especially today for the altamont pass later into this evening. if i push this time stamp forward to about noon, mostly sunny. you don't have to worry too much about the cloud cover today. we'll see nice clearing and the temperatures will remain in the 60s for most of the bay area. we have a couple 50s near half moon bay but even through the interior, the warmest we'll get in through the tri-valley will be the low 70s. as that wind continues, keep that in mind, 45-plus, especially for some of those corridors and wind values as well. every else through the evening, once we max out in the 60s, the satellite/radar will remain pretty calm. that system will stay to our north and our temperatures right now, although we have some 50s, let's look at the wind speeds
5:23 am
because even in through about 3:00, 4:00, it still looks pretty windy. santa rosa, marin, into richmond. time stamp forward to about 7:30. right around dinnertime, bodega bay, 36-plus, the coastline, too, 36-plus miles per hour. it doesn't completely taper off until maybe tomorrow afternoon because even in through early tomorrow we're still going to see those breezy and gusty conditions at times as well pretty much for the entire bay area. if you missed any of that early on and you're just tuning in, here's your now and your next and what to expect. windy again tonight, mild temperatures continue, mostly 60s and 70s. then because of that cold front, we get that cold air mass behind it, some 40s in our future. that will be interesting. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> you said wind. is that's what we see for folks across the bay bridge. sun is coming up. watch that sun bouncing off the buildings as well as that sun
5:24 am
changes angles. no major problems across the span but wind registering on both sides of the bay, oakland and the san francisco side. that will be a factor. we showed you the camera movement. on the peninsula, a couple crashes reported for palo alto area. nothing visible on the live camera. i'll double-check and see xwa's going on. back to you. next on today today, "nbc bay area responds." i'm consumer vestigator.in

5:26 am
5:27 am
let's talk about how to protect yourself, your electronics, and your food. first, make sure you have a flashlight handy. ideally, it's part of your emergency go bag. you have one, right? next, charge your smartphone until it's full and leave it plugged into the charger until the power goes out. if you have a backup battery, grab it. make sure it's charged. remember, your car can charge your smartphone, so make sure it has a full charge or a full tank of gas. don't let your car get stuck in the garage when the power goes out and your opener might not work. move it out before the power outage starts. next, protecting your electronics. prior to an outage, pg&e says turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment, and gear because power may return with momentary surges or spikes that may cause damage.
5:28 am
next, let's talk food, because a fridge full of groceries is a lot of money. we get it. the good news is pg&e says your fridge might keep cold four hours without power. as for your freezer, it might be able to stay cold as long as 48 hours if you keep the doors closed and you stock it full. there's no reason to rush out and binge buy cheap frozen pizzas to fill the space. water-filled bottles will do the job, cheap and effective. police still looking for suspect in a shooting along the embarcardero. i'll have the details on that shooting coming up. ayu're watching "tod

breaking at 5:30, a rolling shoot-out in san francisco along the embarcardero leaves six injured. a live report from the scene on the unfolding investigation, and overnight re-evaluations from police. this is "today in the bay." good morning. i'm ginger conejero saab. laura garcia has the day off. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll if the to the breaking news in just a moment, but first the forecast. vianey arana is in for kari this morning. coming off a nice weekend, but certainly a windy start to the morning. >> absolutely. and we saw some really gusty conditions, especially around the coastline and some of those
5:32 am
corridors as well. altamont pass expect to see the possibility for another 40- to 50-mile-per-hour wind gust as well. in san jose, not as windy, but we'll notice that kicking up. temperatures will bump up, but notice by 12:00 only in the 60s. we'll max out in the upper 60s. that is not the dublin camera behind there, but it is the dublin temperatures. 53 degrees right now. you'll notice clear skies. the winds from the west-southwest at about 16 miles per hour there. but here's a look at what it looks like around 8:00 a.m. notice it does continue pretty gusty, especially up through petaluma, santa rosa, san francisco, mount diablo, the winds are tapering off. it's been a tough morning. mike is following some power lines down. >> it's because of a crash. we're looking for injury information, but the milpitas police told us, taking it closer to the screen, you see the crash basically at 680 where they
5:33 am
change names there. you see this on the east side of the freeway. avoid that area. mim pea tas police told us to advise our viewers, that's you, to avoid that particular area, cropley to the south is an option but it won't take you to the on-ramps for 680. you have to get up towards 237 for the on-ramp there. other side of the peninsula, we saw three crashes reported in the palo alto area. none are blocking lanes, no injuries, so that's good news. the wind registering in oakland and san francisco as the commute is building. back to you. >> thanks, mike. still in san francisco, we continue to follow breaking news from overnight. a car-to-car shoot-out taking place along san francisco's embarcardero. at least six people were injured, and police are still searching for some of the suspects. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live near where that shoot-out started on fisherman's wharf. the police chief says investigators were working throughout the night to get more information and get to the bottom of what's going on here.
5:34 am
what do we know about this hour? >> reporter: the scene is clear near pier 39 so we know the investigators have wrapped up this portion of their investigation, gathering the information needed to move forward to hopefully find these suspects. we'll show our viewers video from last night's scene when it was a bit more active in the area. the pd says this was a car-to-car shooting beginning just before 7:00 p.m. near stockton and beach streets in san francisco not far from where we're standing. they said both cars traveled south along embarcardero before this car-to-car shooting ending roughly around howard street. let's talk about some of these jurps. they say two victims have gunshot wounds when it comes to those injuries. one is life-threatening. three injured from glass shards as a result of this shooting. all those are nonlife-threatening. then the chief pointed out there was a 10-year-old and a 16-year-old apparently walking their bikes at a crosswalk. one was injured, but those
5:35 am
injuries are nonlife-threatening. the other young person in this didn't have any injuries at all. here's chief bill scott giving that update last night about the incident. here's what he had to say. >> first of all, there will be accountability. as i have said to you all, i have every confidence in our officers and our investigators. we are seeing these cases resolve. i am confident we will resolve this case. the message is clear -- you cannot and will not come to this city and commit these types of acts and walk away and get away with it. >> reporter: a couple points from the chief, he said it appears to be an isolated targeted shooting, so this does not appear to be a random case. the chief says they also have a lot of evidence that they're coming through, a lot of surveillance video along the embarcardero, so they have that information. hopefully that will help them locate the suspects. if you have any information to help with this case, contact
5:36 am
sfpd. >> thank you for the update. we sent out a push alert of when the news first broke. download our free nbc bay area news app. new overnight, an investigation continues after a stabbing in san jose. this happened at the intersection of bassett and terraine streets around 10:45 last night near san jose university in downtown san jose. the man suffered life-threatening injuries. so far, no arrests have been made. one person is dead and at least 22 others are injured following a shooting in illinois. it happened yesterday in willowbrook, about 20 miles from chicago. more than 200 teens were attending a party in a parking lot when shots rang out. witnesses say they heard between 20 and 30 shots fired. police have not released a motive, and so far no arrests have been made.
5:37 am
a san francisco church is the latest to wade into what's become a national debate, generating its share of controversy drag queen bible story hours. calvary presbyterian church held an event yesterday providing its own unique take on the drag queen reading stories from the bible. past events elsewhere have drawn criticism. the reverend admits some church members were less than enthusiastic about holding that event, but he believs it was important. >> we're hoping to offer a little balance to all the hateful rhetoric in the country and especially coming from churches and politicians who are using churches and using trans people and drag queens as their props. >> recent bay area events have seen some major pushback, and similar events elsewhere have led states like tennessee to launch legislation trying to restrict drag performances that courts later ruled were unconstitutional. crews in the north bay are making progress in the fight
5:38 am
against the snell fire. it broke out friday night in napa valley about 45 miles northeast of santa rosa. it's not growing, but flames have burned 103 acres. that hasn't changed since saturday morning. containment is up to 90%. cal fire crews are keeping an eye on the windy conditions in the forecast for northern napa county. insight on the wildfires in the north bay this year. cal fire lmu covers calusa, napa, yolo and other counties. crews say so far this year they've seen 83 fires in their territory that have burned just 29 acres. that does not include the snell fire. but last year in the same six-month period, they saw a different number, 176 fires that burned close to 1,800 acres. that is a big difference. cal fire says despite the tremendous rain and full reservoirs, there is still a lot of high grass that is quickly
5:39 am
turning into potential fuel for a fire. things to keep an eye out for, the windy conditions we don't like to see when we talk about fires, vianey. >> absolutely. three things we have to consider -- the temperature, the humidity, and the wind. thankfully for us, we had a record winter, so i've been speaking with, you know, the san jose fire weather lab and scientists. they say the moisture level of a lot of our vegetation is really good, so that's helpful in a way. but with wind, it can quickly spread a fire. that's where things can get problematic. if you look at the current temperatures right now, we're in the 50s, so the temperatures are okay. even the wind speeds, now, these are sustained winds, which are the continuous ones, the ones you kind of consistently see throughout the day. notice in through parts of the north bay, napa right now about 12 miles per hour. but then we get the wind gusts, and that's the one period to where a big wind moment comes
5:40 am
through and this is what we're expecting to see, even through the 6:00 a.m. hour. notice the wind speeds through tonight in through santa rosa 20-plus. once you start getting above that 20-, 30-mile-per-hour wind gust, things can get really dangerous. by 5:00, napa at about 22 miles per hour. temperature-wise, we beal okay, but i also of course want to take a look at not just the wind, let's take a look at our humidity. our moisture content with that cold front that swept through is going to start decreasing into that less than 30% mark in through napa. so we have to still pay close attention. typically we get a nice humidity recovery overnight before sun comes up and begins to dry things out. that's when the grasses and things like that will potentially be problematic. let's get a check on traffic with mike. we're expecting a lighter volume of traffic overall. we don't see as much of a backup forming. about 540 is our first slowdown, barely showing up on the
5:41 am
sensors. milpitas pd says avoid this area, montague, they change names at 680, and that's whether there is a crash taking down power lines. avoid that area. if you need to get on to 680, use calaveras or 237 to the north or hos stet ler to the south. two good options and accessible with the lighter traffic. we have the winds dying down, but it will be out there for a while as vianey was talking about, still affecting san francisco as far as that road weather index goes. lighter volumes at the toll plaza, right now just starting to build a bit. later on, in san francisco, a holiday, so maybe more folks will be headed toward oracle park for tonight's game, 6:45. the crowd will start growing about an hour and a half before that game. impact to transit today because it is juneteenth, there are service changes for this holiday service, some reduced schedules,
5:42 am
either a sunday or a weekend service. in fairfield, there's no service for fast. back to you. coming up on "today in the bay," president biden clearly launching his re-election bid. he's coming to california not for the votes but for the money. and an incredible hours-long arrest after a crash. the quick-thinking actions that helped save bay area horses trapped for hours. and bikes for kids.

5:45 am
it is 5:44 right now. in walnut creek, waking up to the 50s. the temperatures today will be a lot cooler than what we saw last week when we saw 80s. today expect upper 60s, low 70s, and breezy and windy conditions at times. we'll have the full-week outlook coming up. >> look at that beautiful drive through oakland, our live camera showing the b.a.r.t. tracks as well as the overpass. no problem in this part of the bay. we'll show you how things are. we expect to the backup but things might be different today. 5:45 right now. near bodega bay, a big accident involving horses led to an hours-long rescue mission. it happened late yesterday afternoon just south of the bodega bay. a large horse trail we are six horses inside crashed down an embankment on highway 1. two large rescue teams and 25
5:46 am
personnel responded. remarkably, the animals survived with only superficial injuries. three were even able to walk up to the hill themselves. three others had to be pulled with ropes, harnesses, and a makeshift traction system. the horses belong to a local business that rents them out for children's events. two people were also hurt but are expected to be okay. president joe biden will be in the bay area in just a few hours. >> scott mcgrew, he's coming to california. >> and also ron desantis. we all know politicians come to california, they come for the money. the president's not going to be for the votes. president biden is confident he'll win a primary here. and the general election and california's 55 electoral votes. kris sanchez has the full who, what, where, when on mr. biden's bay area visit coming up in just a few minutes from now.
