6:03 am
that's your headliner for the start of the week. let's get a look at the roads with mike. overall, lighter volume with the holiday traffic. a little bit of slowing for north 101. typical spot shows a little more traffic usually on a monday. over here, this is spot to avoid, milpitas pd says, montague, 680, where they all meet. a crash took down some power wires, so avoid that area. the 680 access probably better off with calaveras or out in hofstetter. we have a roadside fire in fremont at the border with union city. we'll check that over there. and the bay bridge with light traffic right now. we'll see if the metering lights turn on in the next few minutes. maybe not. back to you. we have breaking news for you this morning. san francisco police are still looking for some of the people involved in what they're calling a chaotic rolling shoot-out between two cars. >> it started in a tourist area
6:04 am
around fisherman's wharf as many enjoyed father's day. police say it started a little before 7:00 last night. that's when people in two cars started firing at each other near popular pier 39 at beach street and the embarcardero. it ended when one of the vehicles crashed about a mile away on howard street. in between, investigators say the gunfire continued. in all, six people are injured. two victims are young girls police believe were struck by one of the cars while crossing the street. four were injured by gunfire, including two believed to have been involved in the gun battle, one of whom suffered life-threatening injuries. one witness tells us he was walking near pier 35 where the two young girls were struck has the as they walked their bikes across the street. he shows photos of the aftermath saying he saw one suv speeding around 60 miles per hour, striking and injuring members of the same family. >> we saw a girl get hit by the black suv as he was going in the
6:05 am
middle section of the road where the tracks are, but they hit the girl and she just flew over the car, then she started staggering up and tripping all over the place. all the family was dispersed over the street. >> in a late-night news conference chief bill scott said the gun battle was not random and the two people in the cars knew each other. no arrests have been made, but two victims are believed to have been involved. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is talking with police. he'll have a live report ahead at 5:30. rather 6:30. stick with us here on nbc bay area as we continue to bring you the latest both on air and online. pete will have updates at 6:30. download our free nbc bay area news app to get any updates sent right to your phone. today, president joe biden is making a stop in the bay area
6:06 am
to talk about climate investments. right now on his heels a republican who would like to replace him also expected to make a stop in the bay area. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez will be at moffett field when the president arrives. she joins us with more on the president's trip. kris? >> i'll be headed over to moffett in a couple hours, but we expect what the president is going to talk about, big noun address climate change. the president will arrive at moffett field later then head to palo alto's lucy evans bay lands nature preserve. there he is going to talk about $600 million that he wants to dedicate to help communities adapt to climate change like rising sea levels and storm surges but also protecting the power grid and other infrastructure from extreme weather events like the wildfires that we've had. one environmental leader says that the president needs to make this a bipartisan issue. >> i'm looking for president biden to stand boldly for a
6:07 am
working-class-led climate revolution. and the pieces are there, and if he wants to make this into an electoral issue, he should. i think it's a winning one because of how concerned so many people are. i think it's 72% or 73% of people in the california think climate is an urgent issue according to polling. >> the president may be promising more money to address climate change, but he's also hoping to get promises for money for his re-election campaign. later today, he will attend a los gatos fund-raiser hosted by lincoln founder lee hoffman and microsoft's chief technology officer kevin scott. tickets start at $6,500. he'll also attend a fund raiser in atherton hosted by steve wesley. and tomorrow governor newsom will join the president for a fund-raiser at kentfield. also florida governor ron desantis, the mercury neutral
6:08 am
zone -- "mercury news" will attend a private fund-raiser in woodside. but steven eggert is hosting a private fund-raiser. the republican front-runner is still former president donald trump according to a survey of more than 2,000 people. 45% would vote for trump if the election were held today. 39% would vote for biden. 15% say they are just not quite sure yet. >> those numbers are probably going to fluctuate. >> they have. they've kind of changed since last month, too, that gap between trump and biden. >> interesting where those 2,000 people lie, like, where? >> 2,000 is not a lot. >> not a lot. >> but you have to work with the numbers you have. >> interesting for desantis after what happened a couple weeks ago. >> this will be the first time he touch downs in california and in sacramento in particular where those 36 migrants were dr.ed. he admitted his office was
6:09 am
involved in that. so things could get interesting there. >> see if people will be protesting there. >> yeah. i'll be at moffett. >> thanks, kris. for the first time in three year, the shadow cliffs regional recreation area in pleasanton is finally back open for swimmers. it's another sign drought conditions have improved. the lake just refilled its water over the past couple of weeks. the east bay regional parks district says it started an agreement in may to buy extra water to bring recreation back to the lake. swimming and boating there stopped three years ago. at first it was due to the pandemic, but then it continued because of severe drought. >> everybody was happy. like i said, it's a warm day. everybody wanted to come out and barbecue, so we're all happy. >> the water is clear. i went in a little bit there. so it was nice. it's been quite some time. >> fishing from the shore is
6:10 am
allowed now, but boating still is not. the parks district expects boating to resume later on in june. the good news, entry is free. in honor of juneteenth today, there are several events across the bay area. park rangers at some regional parks in the east bay, they will lead major hikes this morning including at thurgood marshall regional park in concord and at big break regional shoreline in oakland. marin city hosts a festival starting at 9:00 this morning. in san jose at the children's discovery museum, a juneteenth celebration for the arts and culture. and a concert in the castro district celebrating allies from the lgbtq community. meteorologist vianey arana is joining us now. i know the forecast is shaping up to be a nice one. but we started off with windy conditions out there. >> we did. i think yesterday the weather was great despite the wind, but we are going to see the wind again. so you probably will notice your
6:11 am
allergies acting up as well with all of that tree pollen blowing around. san francisco, a live look right now. look at that, the sunshine peeking through the buildings. i want to give you a closer look as you're heading to work what to expect. richmond, we do have sunny skies. that's not going to be a problem in terms of how beautiful the day will be, but the temperatures will be in the upper 60s for most of the bay area. brentwood, you can expect to see some jumps into the 70s. but we're going to stay in the low 70s. no 80s expected for today, even into parts like gilbert, where it typically gets hotter at times. we'll see clearing skies about 12:00, 1:00, and expect to see a little cooler temp as well in through oakland. now let's get a look at those gas prices with mike. >> we have great gas, which has the best price in santa clara county, $4.17 at the top here. that's the shop on los gatos boulevard. tri-valley ties that price at a&a express on the boulevard in dublin.
6:12 am
on the peninsula, the best price we could find for san mateo county is up to $4.35 in burlingame on broadway. thanks to gasbuddy.com. it's holiday, so a lighter flow of traffic. but 680 southbound around vernal, there may be a disabled vehicle in the middle of 680 itself causing the slowing off the dublin interchange. there is a fire in alvarado, no injuries and it's off to the shoulder. a revolutionary step in health care. next on "today in the bay," the new artificial kidney invented by one bay area scientist and how it may potentially help chp thousands of lives. and a silicon valley ceo is inspired by elon musk and his customers aren't happy about that. and dad to the rescue. we'll show you one man's kind of

crazy climb to bring his daughter, who got stuck on a water slide.
6:14 am
6:15 am
it is 6:15 is right now. a live look at the san mateo bridge. notice the camera, live look. it's a little shaky. we have some of those winds. we'll see some gusty conditions as well, especially through the
6:16 am
altamont pass later this afternoon. mild in the 60s and 70s. we'll have the seven-day outlook coming up. >> no problems for 880 despite the roadside car fire. everybody is okay. no fire department needed. we are looking at an issue, san mateo bridge and a change at the bay bridge and a crash in the tri-valley. good morning. happy juneteenth to you. so it's a holiday. the stock markets are closed. juneteenth became america's newest federal holiday in june of 2021. it was too quick for the stock market to adjust, so they did trade in 2021. starting last year, they closed like they do today. a ceo gave an interview over the weekend where he said he was inspired by elon musk's handling of twitter. many reddit users are angry at steve huffman and this made them angrier. it's his task to make them profitable as they eye a public
6:17 am
offering, probably causing huge layoffs. musk, as you know, cut huge portions of twitter's staff, so many he had to ask some to come back. he's also refused to pay rent on some twitter offices as well. he's throwing his support behind joe rogan after he demanded a prominent doctor engage in a debate over vaccines. rogan's bosses at spotify have told rogan not to broadcast false claims about vaccines. they've taken down about 100 of his podcasts. he did it again with an interview with robert kennedy jr. when a doctor objected to the false claims they were making. rogan said he'd pay $100,000 to the doctor's favorite charity if the doctor would come debate. the doctor, who's been on the podcast before, refused saying a debate would be pointless.
6:18 am
elon musk, who had no involvement in this argument, then amplified many of rogan's and kennedy's claims. musk told his twitter followers the doctor, who's a professor of virology at baylor, is afraid to debate. that just isn't the case. many twitter users pointed out if i challenge, you know, a basketball star to a debate over whether he, steph curry, is better at basketball or i am and steph curry refuses to debate me, it doesn't make me a basketball star. i don't win. >> or steph curry any less of a basketball star as well. >> exactly right. >> that saying, not in particular but saying argue with a fool, after a while, people won't know which -- >> we were talking earlier, it would be like buzz aldrin, who's walked on the moon, debating someone saying the moon is made of cheese. you can't have a debate on something like that. yeah. >> all right. thanks, scott. >> all right. new this morning, 6:18 now,
6:19 am
a bay area scientist has invented an artificial kidney that someday might work in humans. as you can see in the video, the implantable device is the size of a smartphone and made of silicone wafers used in semiconductors. the device, which has been implanted in pigs, has been successful in mimicking the key functions of a kidney transplant by producing urine and removing waste and toxins from the blood. dr. roy from ucsf who developed the artificial kidney says depending on the funding it could be a number of years before one is available for humans, but a device like this could save thousands of lives. right now there are more than 3 million people worldwide who haven't received a live kidney transplant and must rely on dialysis to survive. >> i feel very confident that
6:20 am
as we get the patients, as we get the researchers, as we get information, as we get society to focus on this area, that kidney failure doesn't have to be a death sentence. you can get better treatment than dialysis. you have you can overcome the scarcity of kidney transplant donors available. and we'll be able to deliver a device that a nephrologist or a transplant surgeon is able to provide to their patient when needed. >> dr. roy says no batteries are required. his artificial kidney would run off the person's blood pressure. and there would be no need for anti-rejection drugs, which are required in live transplants. pretty incredible stuff. trending this morning, a superhero dad coming to the rescue of his daughter. >> this is after his daughter got stuck on a water slide in the uk. you can see right here the father said, you know what, i'm going to get my baby. climbing up that water slide.
6:21 am
after he arrived, they jumped on the float and they slide back down. let's see what happens here. okay, yeah. having some trouble there. but dad's doing his job. she's not alone, right? okay, dad is like okay, okay, here we go. hey, here we go. and there we go. >> all i know is he's, like, i have my daughter. >> right. a father's day weekend for them to remember forever. >> happy belated father's day. >> thank you. i did no acts of heroism like that one. >> you do on the daily. >> i would have. my heart was in it. >> that's right. >> it was windy. you pointed it out to me earlier because of the allergies. >> oh, my goodness. yesterday was horrific for people with allergies. >> i'm not sick, i just have allergies. >> because the pollen is just getting blown everywhere and the tree pollen is high too. >> please tell me we have a
6:22 am
break today. >> well, no. i'm sorry, girl. i'm sorry. the san mateo bridge showcasing some of that wind there, and you can see the camera a little bit shaky. but overall, our skies, we have the sunrise in san jose, a spider web. downtown san jose. also san francisco is going to be a beautiful day, but your hourly forecast for the afternoon, by 12:00, we'll keep the wind factor but you'll notice that the gusty conditions will be kicking up, especially around the corridor, altamont pass. windy into the afternoon. also, by about 3:00, so peak heat, upper 70s in through tuesday, but -- oh, my, the graphics are going crazy. maybe it's the wind. but we are going to be seeing those temperatures get a little warmer heading into tuesday. here's a closer look at the wind speeds. you'll notice some of these gusts, especially for santa rosa, bodega bay, breezy at
6:23 am
times. then into the afternoon, so later this evening, 2:00, 3:00, you'll notice the majority of the wind in the north bay, also san francisco. some of those interior areas, the wind backs off a little bit. your seven-day forecast for san francisco, here it is. a reminder, we have summer beginning this week, officially. we'll be in the upper 60s for san francisco. it is actually going to be a little warmer on the first day of summer, even for inland areas as well, upper 70s. but the wind will make a comeback again on thursday before we see partly cloudy skies for friday and morning clouds for the weekend. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> my kids on their screens will tell you it's already summer. towards the bay, definitely a holiday on the roadways but slow in the tri-valley, south 680, not a crash, a disabled vehicle. speeds are improving, you see it going from red to orange. they may have finally moved that vehicle to the shoulder after a
6:24 am
little delay. the metering lights are on but the backup is not really a factor. >> thanks, mike. next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> we never really know when the next power outage is going to take place, so we have to be prepared every day.
6:25 am
"the doctor will see you now." but do they really? do they y see that crick k in your neneck? that ache e in your heheart? will they y see that funny y little thihing that wasasn't therere last ye? a new bobounce in yoyour ste? the way yoyour reretinal scanan connectss to your blblood sugar?r? at kaiseser permanenente all l of us workrk together to care fofor all thatat is y.
6:26 am
6:26 now. it's now just a part of living here, power outages.
6:27 am
some are surprises. >> yeah, but sometimes you don't get that warning that the lights are going to go out. so you should prepare. we show you how. let's talk about how to protect yourself, your electronics, and your food. first, make sure you have a flashlight handy. ideally, it's part of your emergency go bag. you have one, right? next, charge your smartphone until it's full and leave it plugged into the charger until the power goes out. if you have a backup battery, grab it. make sure it's charged. remember, your car can charge your smartphone, so make sure it has a full charge or a full tank of gas. don't let your car get stuck in the garage when the power goes out and your opener might not work. move it out before the power outage starts. next, protect your electronics. prior to an outage, pg&e says turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment, and gear because power may return with momentary surges or spikes that may cause damage. next, let's talk food, because a fridge full of groceries is a lot of money. we get it.
6:28 am
the good news is pg&e says your fridge might keep cold four hours without power. as for your freezer, it might be able to stay cold as long as 48 hours if you keep the doors closed and you stock it full. there's no reason to rush out and binge buy cheap frozen pizzas to fill the space. water-filled bottles will do the job, cheap and effective. thanks a lot, chris. up next, the top stories we're following today including breaking news in san francisco. >> reporter: police are looking for suspects in the shooting along the embarcardero.

we'll to fand you and you will go to jail, so that is the message. >> breaking right now at 6:30, a rolling shoot-out between cars along san francisco's embarcardero leaves six people injured. the latest on the unfolding investigation and the overnight revelations from police. firefighters have now nearly fully contained one fire burning in rugged terrain in the north bay but not entirely. the conditions today still raising major concerns. this is "today in the bay." monday morning. good morning to you all out there. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm ginger conejero saab filling in for laura. we will get to that breaking
6:32 am
news in just a moment, but for now, we're going to get some traffic updates as well as oh my goodness, is there any improvement in those windy conditions from yesterday? i was one of those allergy victims, vianey arana. >> man, i can only imagine the amount of pollen swirling in the air right now, especially considering how gusty we got at times, winds upwards of 40, 50 miles an hour into the higher peaks. but it is really beautiful. at least we'll get sunshine. that will be good to see. 54 degrees right now in san jose. you'll notice the winds from the west-northwest at about 10 miles an hour. looking at the temperature trend, we'll only max out upper 60s and low 70s today. it is going to be feeling a little cooler, even though that cool front did bring a lot of rain, we saw activity to our north and our east. here's a closer look at the temperatures. we've got colder nights ahead, so it will be a little chilly at times. >> especially for un. chilly for june. >> yeah. 40s. >> looking here at the red, the
6:33 am
slow drive. looking southbound through the tri-valley, we have a disabled vehicle that had been pushed to the shoulder, i thought, over at bernal. there is some recovery, but i think there's a second traffic break, so more focus coming down stone bridge. that should recover if the reports hold steady. looking at the rest of the bay, a smooth flow of traffic throughout the east bay, lighter traffic with the holiday today. the metering lights were turned on at the bay bridge at 6:03. we haven't had the backup forming so that's a great drive into the city right now. we continue to follow breaking news from overnight. a car-to-car shoot-out taking place along san francisco's embarcardero. at least six people were injured, and police are still searching for some of the suspects. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos live for us near where that shoot-out started on fisherman's wharf. the police chief says investigators were working throughout the night to try to get to the bottom of all of this. what have you been able to find out at this hour?
6:34 am
>> reporter: good morning, marcus and ginger. we do know that the scene has cleared here near pier 39, so we know that investigators were here through the night, they have at least wrapped up this part of the investigation. so not as active this morning, but an active scene last night with a number of units there. we want to show our viewers some of that video. as far as the details from section -- police, it happened near stockton and beach near pier 39. both cars traveled south along embarcardero before ending at howard. that's where this car-to-car shooting eventually ended. as far as injuries go, there were two victims that suffered gunshot woundses, one life-threatening. three were injured from glass shards. those injuries were nonlife-threatening. and the police chief also told us there was a 10-year-old who was apparently walking their bike across the street that was caught up in all of this, but those injuries are also nonlife-threatening. here's chief bill scott talking a little more about this incident.
6:35 am
>> first of all, there will be accountability. as i have said to you all, i have every confidence in our officers and our investigators. we are seeing these cases resolve. i am confident we will resolve this case. the message is clear -- you cannot and will not come to this city and commit these types of acts and walk away and get away with it. >> reporter: chief scott also pointed out this appears to be an isolated targeted shooting, so this is not a random case of a shooting here along the embarcardero in san francisco. he also says they have a lot of evidence that they're combing through, plenty of surveillance video in the area, so they'll look for that as they try to locate these suspects. of course, if you have any information on this case, you are encouraged to contact police. pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> whenever these incidents happen, it's never a good thing. it's so saddening to see when innocent people are hurt. >> absolutely. >> all right.
6:36 am
pete, thank you so much for that update. we sent out a push alert when the news first broke. you can stay in the know on this incident and so much more by downloading our free nbc bay area news app. new overnight, an investigation continues after a stabbing in san jose. this happened at the intersection of bassett and terraine streets around 10:45 last night near san jose state university in downtown san jose. police are saying that the man suffered life-threatening injuries. so far, no arrests have been made. and developing now, one person is dead and at least 22 others are injured. this is following a shooting in illinois. it happened yesterday morning in willowbrook, which is about 20 miles from chicago. police say that more than 200 teens were attending a party in a parking lot when that shooting happened. witnesses say they heard between 20 and 30 shots fired. police have not released a motive so far and no arrests have been made. happening today, the

warriors will formally introduce their new general manager, mike dunleavy jr. he's replacing the longtime gm bob meyers, but he should be familiar to dove nation. he's been in the front office since 2008, but way back in 2002, the team drafted him third overall. dunleavy spent five seasons with the warriors before the team traded him to indiana. later today at chase center, he will address the media for the very first time in his new role. dunleavy will have a lot on his plate from the get-go. the nba draft takes place thursday and perhaps more importantly, the uncertain future for star draymond green. many expect him to opt out of his contract and become a free agent. but green said as recently as last month he still wants to spend his spire career with the warriors. the deadline for green's option is ten days from now. 6:37 right now. developing for you, crews in the north bay are making some

progress in fighting the snell fire. this one broke out friday night in pope valley about 40 miles northeast of santa rosa. those flames have burned 103 acres. that hasn't changed since saturday morning. containment is up to 90%. cal fire crews are keeping an eye on those windy conditions out there in the forecast for northern napa county. we're also getting some insight on the wildfires in the north bay this year. cal fire lmu cover kas lusa, lake, napa, sonoma, solano, and yellow counties. crews say so far this year that they've seen 83 fires in the territory that have burned just 29 acres. that does not include the snell fire. last year, the same six-month period they saw 176 fires that burned close to 1,800 acres. cal fire says despite the tremendous rain and full reservoirs that we have, there
6:39 am
is a lot of high grass. and that is quickly turning into potential fuel for those fires. meteorologist vianey arana of course here right now. we've been talking about the windy conditions, and that is a frightening thing when we have any fire in our area. >> absolutely. just because, you know, one ember can spread to another spot. you heard them talking about the grasses. that's kind of our bigger concern is the small brush and the grasses because they are a lot quicker to dry. the moisture concentration matters on the ground. even though we had a record went they are past year, that's going to help ease some of the fire outlook, still got to be mindful because once the temperatures heat back up, stuff gets dry. let's look at the three things we need to look out for when it comes to, you know, warnings or anything like that with fires. right now, the temperatures are good. we're in the 50s, so we don't have known heat that's else inially going to play into this. nchtd, we're running a few degrees cooler because we had a cold front sweep through last night. so that system is actually
6:40 am
responsible for also kicking up the winds, even though it helped cool us off. current wind speeds through this area, novato and that parks we have kind of a 15-, 20-mile-per-hour range. those are sustained winds. but it's the wind gusts that become problematic. that's what we saw a lot of last night. if you notice time stamp of-wise, it advances to about 10:30, 11:00, through apartments of santa rosa, petaluma, 20-plus, but in napa we stay breezy. we're going to see that continue at least through tonight into tomorrow. temperature-wise we'll be good, bumping up into the 70s with clear conditions expected in to napa county. let's look at the roads with mike. light overall volume, but we see some slowing across the san mateo bridge, a pretty difficult area, no surprises. but we have a good number of folks commuting this morning. we recovery from an earlier disabled vehicle. the hazard has been cleared from pleasanton, south 680. it spreads out between sunol and the dublin interchange.
6:41 am
surprisingly light. even though we have many businesses that are closed today, we may have more folks coming into the city for the baseball game tonight. we'll get crowds around oracle park and crossing back and forth on the bridge to the parking lot. for mass transit, some of these agencies reporting they have altered their surveillance as well for the holiday. sunday's service, saturday's service reduced surveillance depending on which you go through with golden gate transit. back to you. an incredible hours-long rescue. coming up, the quick-thinking actions that saved one group of horses trapped for hours. president biden lifting off, beginning his trip to the bay area. we'll have the latest. and apple's first-ever investor selling a large chunk of property in monterey bay.
