search and the sub itself. >> in a moment, we will hear from the coast guard admiral who is leading the search and rescue efforts. let's start with tom costello, who is in boston. tom, this is definitely a race against time. >> absolutely. we are at coast guard command here in boston. they are setting up and in charge of this in close collaboration with canadian coast guard command. they had a ship search for any signs of the submersible that may be in the water. the bottom line, as you mentioned, four days of oxygen when it went into the water. right now the clock is ticking. in the cold north atlantic, a search and rescue operation, looking for any signs of a submersible.

and the five people onboard missing since going to explore the titanic wreckage. >> it is a challenge to conduct a search in that remote area, but we are deploying all available assets. >> reporter: it is a 21 foot submersible named titan owned by oceangate, a private company that charters tours costing as much as $250,000. among the paying passengers, billionaire hamish harding, who dived to the mariana trench and a space flight on blue origin. he signed his name on the logo as he announced he would be diving to the titanic. also onboard a pakistan businessman and his son. overnight oceangate released a new statement. our entire focus is on the well-being of the crew and every step is being taken to bring the passengers back. they discussed the ongoing fascination with the titanic.

>> we have a number of people that come to us, people consumed by the titanic. it was just great to take them down. >> reporter: among the search efforts, u.s. and canadian c-130s. and dropping sonar buoys in the water listening for the sub. >> when something happens on the high seas, it gets complicated quickly because of winds, ocean drift, all that stuff. >> reporter: consider the world's most famous ship wreck. it rests at a depth of two miles. in recent years, other tourist submersibles have tried exploring the wreckage. now search teams are in a race against the clock for this missing sub. oxygen potentially running low. a canadian aircraft dropped a sonar to listen for sounds. i asked what specifically are you listening for. they're listening for tapping or voices because at this point

they may be the only clues they could have. >> oh, my gosh. there are so many complicating factors in the search and rescue. so what about the pressure of the ocean, tom? how does that play? >> reporter: this is intense pressure at 13,000 feet down. a typical u.s. navy sub, the best of the best, goes down two to three thousand feet. that's it. this is at 13,000 feet. no diver, of course, can go that deep. all they can use is submersibles if they can find this sub. but the coast guards don't have that technology to go down, so they're trying to rush that into the area. as we said, time is really of the essence now. >> all right, tom. thank you. joining us is admiral john mager. good morning to you. admiral, has the company involved here provided you any

information on where the vessel was at last contact, what mechanically may have gone wrong that led to this situation? >> savannah, our focus right now is really on the search capabilities, so we do have an understanding of where the vessel, the submersible was operating. and, so, we're prioritizing a search in those areas. the ocean gate expedition is actually leading the underwater search area because they know that site better than anybody else in terms of the underwater search. so we're working were closely with them to prioritize our under water search efforts and get equipment there that could be helpful for the search. >> are you optimistic that we will find these people alive? >> we're working very, very hard

to make sure we bring all assets to bear on this problem, to bring leading technical experts to understand what -- what capability is available and what capability we can get to the scene. and, you know, the thoughts of the crew members and their families really drive our crews forward. and all of the partners that have been working this complex case to make sure that we -- we can continue to find them. >> admiral, we wish you the best of luck in your important work. thank you for your time this morning, sir. >> thank you for your time. appreciate it. more breaking news unfolding. the president's son hunter biden reaching an agreement to solve a five year federal investigation into his finances. under the deal he will plead guilty to a pair of misdemeanor tax charges. and it also settles a separate gun charge. the u.s. attorney in delaware agreeing to recommend probation,

no jail time is part of the deal. kristen walker is joining us. and so walk us through what is in the plea deal. >> we're learning that hunter biden will plead guilty to two federal misdemeanor count of failing to pay taxes and also a separate gun possession charge and that charge will likely be dismissed. this investigation did take five years, it involved the irs, the fbi and was looking into other issues including hunter biden's business dealings and whether he failed to register as a foreign agent. we can essentially read this as dropping that part, those issues, the department of justice has decided that they weren't worth pursuing. the nbc learning the agreement means that the u.s. attorney will recommend probation if hunter biden and the charges likely won't result in any jail time. the white house responding just moments ago saying that the president and first lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life. we'll have no further comment.

>> of course this is a legal story, also a political story. this u.s. attorney was actually appointed by former president trump in 2018 as i understand it, and then president biden kept him on because he was overseeing this investigation into hunter biden. but many republicans will not be happy to see this resulting in no jail time for the president's son. >> and we're already hearing from former president trump. there will certainly be a massive political fallout from this agreement, no doubt about that. we're hearing from mr. trump, he is already out calling this a, quote, sweetheart deal. let me read you a little more of what he had to say. he post this had on truth social. he said that the corrupt biden doj just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by ghooifrngts a mere grifrngt system sf broken. sgleenchtsd comment freskt live, but he has defended his son. he said that he has done nothing wrong. undoubtedly those statements are

severe weather. and first let's get to blayne alexander in mississippi. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. you're right. this is one terrifying example of this storm's fury. look at this tractor trailer here. a gentleman in this area tells us it was clear down the street. it was picked up, thrown here during the storm. if you go several streets over, it is much the same story. homes are unrecognizable. and for so many people in the south, it was not over yet. this morning as millions across the south face record-breaking heat, heavy rain and no power, yet another round of severe weather and tornadoes are taking their toll. in mississippi, downing trees and power lines, ripping roofs

off homes and stripping the steeple from this church. >> i'm thankful to be alive. >> reporter: it is one of at least 18 reported tornadoes across the region in the last week, claiming at least six lives, including one in lewen, mississippi. >> felt like a giant was hitting the house with a sledge hammer. >> reporter: gary felt the storm's strength, an ef-3 tornado striking in the middle of the night, taking the life of 67-year-old george. >> where that black jeep at. >> reporter: right there. >> it's gone now. >> reporter: more heartbreak after 67-year-old wilbert was killed by a fallen tree. >> it hurts right now. >> reporter: down in florida, the storms also took a toll, with one confirmed tornado in the panhandle. heavy rain also caused heavy floods in southern alabama, turning streets in rivers.

this as 35 million residents swelter under blistering heat. >> it's like 94 inside. >> reporter: and that heat makes things all the more difficult for clean-up here when you consider the fact that people are in this heat trying to clean up with no power and no ac. now, the worst of the heat is expected to go through tomorrow. in fact, parts of texas are expected to see temperatures higher than 100 degrees. meanwhile, the threat for tornadoes for so many across the southeast continues today. >> all right. thank you. let's turn to al for more on the storms and what to expect today. >> good morning, everybody. we have this blocking pattern right now. all the way down to the texas/mexico border keeps the heat there. this upper level low will hang around. so we do have rounds of rain. five million people under risk of severe weather from texas to florida. isolated tornadoes. heavy rain. some places picking up with five

inches to seven inches of rain. stretching all the way down to east of atlanta. plus, that heat. 32 million people under heat advisories, heat warnings stretching from the southwest all the way to new orleans. look at these temperatures today. these are air temperatures, not feels like temperatures. could set a record in houston. wichita falls. and then we move into tomorrow. that heat stretches down. triple digits. and really no relief in sight. heavy into the weekend. upper 90s to nearly 100 degrees. corpus christi up to alpine and down to dallas. guys? we're learning more about the conversations that happened roughly this time yesterday during the high stakes meeting between secretary of state antony blinken and president xi. the two coming together in

espionage and taiwan, u.s. and china relations had been in near free-fall. add to it growing tension over a chinese spy base. >> of course, this is not something new. >> is the administration concerned about china making it more than a spy base? >> we always have concerns when they are physically taking a position that could turn into a military base of some kind. >> reporter: chinese officials have grievances, too, like u.s. export bans on technology and u.s. sanctions on several senior officials here, including xi's minister of defense. it is why china refused blinken's request to reopen military crisis lines, communication cutoff by beijing last year, despite dangerously close encounters between warships in the taiwan strait and military aircraft over the south china sea, something we saw in february onboard another u.s. navy plane intercepted by a

a.i. on capitol hill there is a bipartisan bill being introduced to establish a commission on artificial intelligence. >> the question is is it too little too late? let's turn to jacob ward good morning talk about this meeting today. this has washington's attention now. of course, the question is, you know, is the cat out of the bag? can regulators catch up with the technology >> well, today will be an interesting first step in trying to answer that question. we know that the president will be meeting, as you mentioned, with these industry leaders and academics at the same time that two congressmen are supposed to release this new piece of legislation that would establish a 20-member commission and have roughly two years to sort out some guard rails around a.i. what's so interesting about president biden's meeting with that group of industry leaders and academics is that this is not a group that's necessarily pro-a.i.

these are people who are making a life's work out of being critical of the technology, are going to be explaining to him how it can deepen problems for children, problems of discrimination and prejudice, the ways in which it could really get at the very heart of our ability to trust one another. it is a very different group than i think he's probably been meeting with so far, considering he's been meeting mostly with industry executives, the sorts of people who have been out in front trying to make money on this technology. >> it is a commission. and you did say two years, which seems like a lifetime when it comes to this technology in europe and england, they're making strides already what can the government actually do to put the genie back in the bottle >> it is interesting how europe is handling this is they have specifically laid out a frame work for understanding a.i. by risk so once they have categorized something as a very, very high thing and they put using a.i. to

establish some sort of credit score or using a.i. to establish your emotional state, that stuff would be off the table in europe according to people i was speaking with close to this new legislation, that could be part of the model this commission looks at i know two years sounds like a long time. it sounds like far too slow to be going after a technology that is moving so incredibly fast but you have to remember, it took us 50 years to get our arms around cigarettes or that gambling was a source of addiction. this is pretty fast in the regulatory world, considering this technology is moving week by week. it is a reflection of how fast that technology is moving. but an effort by lawmakers, these are two guys that do not have anything idealogically in common except this concern about a.i. >> a person pioneered this gene editing. that's a technology she basically declined to pursue, which some have recommended for

interstate 80 following a big rig crash that sent one driver to the hospital. sounds like that problem is going to be out there for a while. >> we have that activity right underneath that over crossing there that shows you the three lanes blocked. one lane gets by westbound 80 in through richmond. you see the crashed vehicles on the shoulder and clearly a distraction as we saw that calmer scene just from a live going on right now. that backup has gotten down to one lane, the traffic squeaking by westbound 80. we've had no updates since early this morning. this crash happened at 1:30 a.m. haven't had an update since before 6:00. now we still have that backup. in that backup, we've had two subsequent crashes. no major injuries.
