today, tuesday, june 20th, 2023 scouring the sea crews are racing to find a missing vessel on an expedition to see the titanic what we are learning about the five passengers on board and the countdown to reach them before time and action run out. >> remembering tori bowie. we sit down with one of her former teammates plus, why doctors say even she could not outrun the crisis facing mothers in america. >> biden ananswer son h hunt striking a plea withth federal prosecutor the punishment he could face. and brr, it's cold in here summer heats up, offices are cooling down, way down why companies may want to reconsider how they set the thermostat we're going to begin this hour with breaking news. >> the desperate search
12:02 pm
unfolding in the north atlantic right now. a submersible vessel on its way to see the wreckage is still missing. the coast guard provided an update earlier today. >> our crews are work around the clock to ensure we're doing everything possible to locate the titan and the five crew members. to date, those search efforts have not yielded any results. >> reporter: it's happening in a remote area 500 miles off the coast of newfoundland, canada. 10,000 square miles have already been searched. a ship from france is on its way to help with rescue efforts, and the concern, the rapidly dwindling oxygen supply on board. it left with four days supply. that means it could run out thursday morning >> we are also learning about the five passengers on board the fifth passenger has not yet been publicly identified
12:03 pm
we have kristen dahlgren on this story in boston now. what more did we learn from the coast guard's news conference? >> right, i mean, a couple of the headlines is 38 to 39 hours now that they have left of usable oxygen on board, so time really, really running out here, and this is such a desperate search it is going on not just by the coast guard, but by the canadian coast guard. they're also asking for any help from vehicles that are out in the area there is a remote operated vehicle on a ship nearby it is diving as well trying to get some pictures, anything they've dropped those sonar buoys. they're trying to listen for any type of pinging, any type of voices they might be able to hear and they're asking for help. there's that ship coming from france, and france said there's a french national on board as well as that fifth person.
12:04 pm
that believed to be able to get down to 13,000 feet. there aren't many vehicles that can get down to that level and the coast guard was asked flat out, if you found it right now, would you be able to take that vehicle, to salvage it? and the answer was, i don't know so, a desperate search, and hopefully an ability to salvage that vehicle back to you. >> everyone is hoping for that miracle rescue kristen dahlgren in boston for us, thank you. joining us now david marcay, a retired u.s. navy captain and former submarine commander based on your experience, did anything stand out to you from the news conference? >> they haven't found them that's not good news. >> absolutely. every is worried about that, especially the oxygen levels on board. >> david, can you talk to us about the difference between a submarine, which a lot of people are familiar with, and this vessel, 21 feet, this submersible? >> both go under the water, both
12:05 pm
are designed to stay under the water for hour os day in the case of a submarine. but the submarine has a big propeller that can drive it out of port, out of boston, norfolk, hawaii, and go thousand of miles away a submersible needs to be toed this was toed from newfoundland and released in the vicinity of the titanic. it can drive down using thrusters, move around the wreck, and come back on its own. >> i do want to give our viewers perspective. the titanic wreckage is 12,500 feet below sea level. submarine can reach 3,000 feet, and a skaub diver, 130 feet. if this is under water, what are the biggest challenges of finding it >> the depth is the big thing, and these are pressures that we can't really fathom. at that depth, it's 380 times
12:06 pm
the pressure we feel at atmosphere when you send a spaceship in space, it's an easy problem. it's one atmosphere inside, zero outside. that's only a difference of one atmosphere this submarine is contending with 380 times what we design a spaceship for. and the water is freezing cold, and it's pitch black, and we don't know exactly where it is since it's not making sounds anymore, we don't know where to locate the search. looks like this have an rov, designed to go to a specific location in the ocean that we know, work on a cable, work on an under water well, and then move along it's doing the best it can, but you got a camera and you're like -- it's like going through a football pitch with a magnifying glass and trying to find the right blade of -- it's just a long laborious process. we might get lucky
12:07 pm
let's hope so. finding the ship is the first step in rescuing them. >> clock is ticking. retired navy captain david mackay, thank you so much. 5 million people crass the central plains and north gulf coast bracing for a round of severe weather in what's already been an active week of storms. the state of mississippi has been especially hard bill karens is tracking what's to come, but first let's begin with blayne alexander. she's in mississippi where that devastating twister touched down >> reporter: here in lieuen, mississippi, this is the violent aftermath of storm it blew through more than 24 hours ago, but look what it left behind that's one home on this street a man named derry lives here he and his wife were inside the house. it's almost a tale of two
12:08 pm
houses the front, completely destroyed. kitchen blown open the stove exposed he and his wife were able to make it back to the bedroom, the one portion of the house that's still in tact, and miraculously they were able to walk away unscathed. over here, this is just another piece a what we're seeing here house unrecognizable back there. just a pile of debris. really as far as you can see on this street, a couple of streets over as well we're talking about catastrophic damage keep in mind, it's not just here this is one of the latest stops on what's been a four or five-day almost tear of this same system of weather, producing the same storms across the southeast. we've seen eight fatalities so far, including in parts of texas. the other part of this story, while some people are dealing with the cleanup, the severe weather, it's also the heat. near record highs in a number of places and keep in mind
12:09 pm
many places are the same exact towns that have been hit by the storm, so we're talking about a lot of people without power, a lot of people without ac, all of that is making the cleanup efforts that much more difficult. back to you. >> blayne, thank you we want to bring in meteorologis bill karens. bill, what areas are you concerned about? >> still along the gulf coast. we've moved a little further to the west this area in yellow is where we have a slight risk of severe weather. maybe an isolated tornado, damaging wind, small hail. i think flash flooding may be more life then, than anything today. look at these bands. they're trailing and moving in the same locations rain total up to 3 inches around biloxi a lot of lightning with these storms, too, especially that one to the southeast of new orleans. thunderstorm running from i-10 from slidell to the waveland
12:10 pm
area we worry about the flash flooding heat is still a huge issue 250,000 without power. feels like 110 in dallas, 11 in san antonio, and corpus christi almost feeling like 110. this isn't going to end. going to continue today, tomorrow, and into the weekend. we're following breaking news this hour involving president biden's son hunter biden is expected to plead guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to pay his taxes. the plea is part of a deal he reached the federal prosecutors. he also faces a separate gun charge that will likely be dismissed if he meets specific conditions ryan riley joins us no to dig into this ryan, this investigation has been going on for five years what more do we know at this point? >> reporter: it is, and it's a pretty good resolution, i think, for hunter biden overall sort of an indication of what you can get when you follow the advice of your high-paid
12:11 pm
attorneys. there's also been a number of experts pointing out this is a charge that's rarely bought. the tax charges, misdemeanor tax charges aren't brought when somebody has paid back what they owed originally, the gun charge is brought forward went there's, say, a white supremacist the federal government needs to find a charge against because there's nothing on the books that fits the pattern of behavior and practices. it's commonly used in other gun cases when there's a larger sort of offense and there's nothing perfectly on the books so overall i would say this is a deal that there's going to be a lot of critics coming from the republicans. donald trump saying he got a sweetheart deal. based upon the facts, it's a reasonable outcome for this case overall. >> really important context given that he's the president's son. ryan riley, thank you so much. a major shake-up is coming
