5:32 am
yet again. >> i got to say, i like summer, but i also like cooler weather, so this is great for me. look at this beautiful view. look at the traffic, you see north 101 through palo alto is moving smoothly. speed sensors in and out of san francisco and south bay is where we see the change. north 101 shows the change. but not a big deal, just the start of the silicon valley. we'll check out the east bay coming up. developing for you right now in the tri-valley, a fiery crash splits a car in two. at least one person is dead. but the wreckage is so intense that there are still major unanswered questions. >> and kris sanchez is live in dublin. and what are you learning at the scene? >> reporter: i can show you where i'm standing right now and
5:33 am
the debris field extends all the way to the corner behind me. this was a very violent crash. and authorities believe that speed was likely a factor in this one. this happened about 10:30 last night here on the border of san ramon and dublin on doherty road near fallbrook drive. the video of the crash, you see there the vehicle is unrecognizable. after the driver hit the tree, it split in half, each half of the vehicle was then engulfed in flames. we did see the coroner out here at the scene and the alameda county fire department says it appears that the driver and likely one other person were in the vehicle at the time. the investigation continues, but at this point, shear impact of the crash point to speed as a factor. doherty road is a main thoroughfare here along this neighborhood, there are apartment complexes on one side.
5:34 am
it is open once again, to it shouldn't impact traffic. but speed limit is 45 and we've definitely seen people who are likely going faster than that. i'll remind you that according to the national highway traffic safety administration, speed is a factor in about a third of crashes. so slow down as you hit the road this morning. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> great reminder. and also developing now the desperate search in the atlantic for the small submarine that has disappeared three days ago gee. time is running out to find the craft which takes tourists deep under water to view the titanic. time is running out to find the craft which takes tourists deep under water to view the titanic. >> and as jay gray tells us, crews are redirecting to what may be sounds in that search zone. >> reporter: additional planes, ship, specialized equipment and rescue teams are rushing into a 7600 square mile search zone in

the atlantic, an area larger than the state of connecticut. >> what i can tell you is that there is a full press, full court press effort to get equipment on scene as quickly as we can. >> reporter: the mission pushing into deeper water using sonar and an underwater drone, but to this point, there is no sign of the oceangate submersible missing since sunday morning less than two hours after beginning a tourist expedition to explore wreckage from the titanic with five men inside. the pilot, an oceangate founder and ceo stockton rush, a british businessman and his son, and also a french diver and a billionaire adventurer. >> text i do the was hey, we're headed down to the titanic today. >> reporter: and that text from harding to his friend and astronaut just before the journey began. >> i would assume that they are stuck on the bottom in the mud or somehow entangled.

and share the data with law enforcement. >> so it will just help with investigative leads and so far the success rate in how fast the deputies locate the stolen vehicles is pretty impressive. biggest thing is get the vehicles back to the rightful owner. >> and already installed devices are credited for nine deputy arrests this year alone. those readers will be funded through property taxes. and a major new milestone for the millennium tower. it is now supported by 18 piles. and the tower currently leans more than 20 inches. much of the leaning was caused by the digging and other activities surounding the project that began in 2021. engineers hope that the steel and concrete piles will stop the tower from sinking further and
5:39 am
even reverse some of its tilt. while millennium management sees encouraging results, experts tell us that it is simply too soon to know for sure given much of the sinking and tilting was trigged by the fix work itself. and as we look out at san francisco, a beautiful start to the morning. and it looks good on the first day of summer. about two hours away from the official start. >> 7:57. and we're not expecting to see any rain today for the start of summer. just a lot of sunshine. but i figured that it would be a good moment to check in on how we're doing with our reservoirs because here is what it stands at right now. for the four largest in the state of california, we are still at 84% capacity after a record winter with a series of atmospheric rivers. we all remember that. but also lake oroville is now officially at 100% capacity, that is the second largest reservoir in the state of
5:40 am
california. shasta is first and that is at 96% of capacity. so a lot of these are pretty much either nearing or at capacity. and even that is good news because we'll see that shifting into june and july once we start to notice the warmer weather and of course a little bit less rain heading into june and july. great news there. always good to see our reservoirs nice and full especially after we had a drought that has been replenished. >> and over here we're looking at the bay bridge. changes there because they have just activated the metering lights. not a major issue. any are cycling pretty smoothly. span is doing pretty great westbound. eastbound coming up tomorrow morning, you will look at the exit off of the treasure island approach, lower deck, you have to shift over to the right side to get off there to treasure island.
5:41 am
that exit changes starting tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. we do have that change in place and that will be an adjustment because right now you would exit off the other side of the lower deck. so a that is a change tomorrow. tonight no change, but there will be congestion for the game. so for folks traveling past oracle, watch that tonight for more traffic. rest of the bay show as good drive. in addition to the slowing for north 101, typical at this time, we also have the orange line added to the disruption. crews continue do maintenance work for the overhead power lines. and so today we have for the next few days in fact orange line and green line have separate light rail disruptions. and blue rail back to normal service. 5:41. the giants are the hottest team this baseball.
5:42 am
5:45 am
brentwood, you will be one of our warmer spots for today. yes, 77 by noon. hello summer. we'll see a change this weekend as well. and this was pretty quick, metering lights turned on about three minutes ago and we already see about half the distance of the parking lot is filled in for these lanes. this is a wednesday, we expected heavier volume than yesterday, but we'll track the approaches on the east bay freeways coming in toward the oakland approach to san francisco. president biden called the president of china a dictator. >> and scott cgrew, chinese are not very happy about that. >> yeah, kind of rough timing. secretary of state antony blinken just left china after what was described as a very successful trip to ease tensions and furthermore talks, stabilize
5:46 am
an unstable relationship. the word came up as biden was speaking right here in the bay area where he was describing what he had learned about xi and that spy balloon. he said xi didn't know anything about the balloon and biden said, quote, that is a great embarrassment for dictators when they don't know what happened. now, is xi a dictator? he is indisputably in charge of a one party system which selects him as president every time. china used to rotate presidents, they had term limits. xi got rid of those limits. the chinese government said biden's comments were extremely absurd and irresponsible, seriously contradicting the basic facts. now, secretary of state antony blinken has left china, he is in the uk where he will attend a meeting of democracies who intend to help ukraine rebuild after the war whenever that is. but the planning is under way. president biden meantime will
5:47 am
leave the bay area from sfo just after 10:00 a.m. today. thom jensen is at the airport ready to cover that. thom says that the president may conduct a brief press conference before he goes. and merrick garland is wrapping up a trip to the hague this morning. moments ago he held a press conference where he was asked about the plea deal with hunter biden. this was just minutes ago. we are still waiting on the video. yesterday a federal prosecutor announced a plea deal with biden over unpaid taxes and falsifying a form to biden a gun. that seemed to wrap up a five year investigation by the prosecutor who was appointed by donald trump. garland asked about it again just minutes ago said he had nothing to say but reporters were free to ask the prosecutor who only had the case. >> thanks, scott.
5:48 am
and summer is getting off to a luke warm start, but the giants are sizzling hot. last night against the rival padres, a peterson home run in the eighth tied the game at three. and then in the ninth inning, for the second straight night they won on their last at bat. with the bases loaded, there was a walk giving the giants the 4-3 win. giants now have a nine straight game winning streak. >> love to hear it. and happening today, san jose's electric scooter prior is celebrating five years since reaching an agreement with the city. the leaders chose bird to be the sole prior of on demand escooters back in 2018 in part to provide order in what had really become a chaotic enterprise. bird says it is still expanding it presence in san jose. bird plans to hold an
