and then a deadly tornado in a small town overnight in texas. the cleanup efforts. not one, not twice, but three times. the san francisco business cleaning up after being vandalized again. the reason the owner says the attacks won't bring them down. this is "today in the bay." good to have you with us on this thursday morning. i am kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we will get to the breaking news and the commute with mike, but first we have to talk about the weather and the first full day of summer. >> yeah, we are keeping the good times rolling here in the bay. palo alto, still seeing june gloom this morning, and temperatures also a little chilly out there. only in the low 50s for palo alto. we are struggling to warm up as the day goes on. in the 10:00 hour, we are seeing a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures in the peninsula
6:02 am
only topping out in the mid to upper 60s. 68 in san mateo. 69 in mountain view, and only slightly warmer as we move into marts of concord and livermore, also in the low 70s. we will talk about all the microclimates coming up in a few minutes. mike, is it clear? >> clear as far as incidents go at the bay bridge. there's a big change for the lower deck, and we will talk about that coming up. i did want to point out the area i circled, eastbound 80 around cutting boulevard, and a disabled vehicle has been cleared from the lanes, and there was slowing in both directions, but now we are back to just the commute direction slowing. we are seeing more traffic building off the southbound 880 drive. and the build for 101 into san

josé, we will follow. back over to you. >> thank you. oxygen inside the missing submersible is believed to have been used up in the last two hours. >> the search is continuing this morning, and it's growing more and more desperate. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live for us in san francisco. i know you have been following this story. what is the latest on the search efforts? i know they have not given up. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and kris. the search efforts are centered in the east coast out of boston. we have seen reports coming from there this morning, but here in the bay area, people are waking up and still looking for updates because some of the passengers onboard do have bay area tides, and one reported to have san francisco roots. the anxiety and desperation growing this morning as oxygen expected to have run out just past 4:00 this morning. we spoke with a couple that knows this process very well. nbc bay area spoke with

explorers on the same expedition last year. mike reese says he and his wife, denise, were supposed to be on this expedition to look for the sunken titanic. he actually continued on to the exploration while his wife was left on the mother ship because she tested positive for covid last year, and denise had her own nervous waiting game as she waited for her husband. here's what the couple had to say about their experience. >> mission control that they have there that follows the sub, they could tell me where the sub was located and what was happening. i got the sense that mission control was in communication with the sub. >> there's no furniture inside the submarine.

there's a comfortable piece of carpeting, and it has the steel mesh walls that are curved, and we went from sea level to two miles down and back, and i never felt the pressure change in my ears, not even like a 10-floor elevator ride. >> reporter: mike said it was a long waiver he had to sign. the couple, just like the rest of the world, is tracking this massive search. they say they know at least two of the five passengers onboard. health experts have also been asked repeatedly about what bodies on the titan may be undergoing this many hours in, and we are told some organs at this point because of cold temperatures and lack of oxygen, they may already be starting to
6:06 am
fail. hope is not lost. so far this is still labeled as a search and rescue mission. just to point out quickly, there was a tweet earlier this morning from the u.s. coast guard that said french and canadian vessels have reached the ocean floor and begun its search for the titan. >> i know you mentioned hope a minute ago, and there was hope yesterday after the banging noise they heard, so any development there about the banging? >> the canadian vessel was using sonar technology for the search, and they heard the banging noises on tuesday and then wednesday with 30-minute intervals. the coast guard said there are many things that could possibly contribute to the banging noises
6:07 am
and those noises are inconclusive, and the ocean is a busy place, and at this point it's still very much a waiting game. >> ginger, we have a graphic up on the screen showing the perspective of how deep this wreckage is and how deep the submersible could be. can you talk about that? >> it's hard to wrap our minds around how deep the titan is or was trying to go. if you look at the screen, the max a scuba diver can go is 350 feet below sea level, and most divers can only go half that far. they say the newest navy submarines can only go 1,600 feet below sea level, and blue whales can go a little below that, and it's just a fraction of where the titan was trying to go, and the wreckage of the
6:08 am
titanic is very deep in there, and i was listening to reports yesterday that was making the parallel between the grand canyon, it's two times the size of the grand canyon is how deep they were trying to go to the ocean's floor. >> hard to sink that low. thank you, ginger. the owners of a san francisco restaurant are cleaning up the storefront after being vandalized for the third time in as many months. the burglary happened tuesday around 3:00 a.m., and the thieves were able to get into the restaurant by shattering the glass window and once inside they stole $650 in cash and $1,500 worth of equipment, and the owner says because of pride month the break ins are

targeted. the leader of the most populous country will meet with president biden today. >> brie jackson joins us this morning. this is the first time the india prime minister has officially visited the u.s.? >> yes, the two leaders are expected to discuss a variety of issues, including tackling climate change and the war in ukraine and india's relationship with russia. president biden welcoming indian prime minister modi to the white house, and the two leaders working hand and hand to strengthen ties. his visit comes days after

antony blinken's high-stakes meeting with xi jinping. >> we recognize we were in an increasingly unstable place in our relationship. i think this is the start of the process to put more stability into it. >> while both sides hailed progress, tension remains. the chinese ministry criticized president biden for calling their chinese counterpart a dictator. top democrats and the white house are backing president biden while republicans blast him. >> words alone will not deter the actions. >> i think what joe biden has done since his first day in office, he projected weakness. >> the biden administration is defending its actions against

china. >> we won't hesitate to call out areas where we disagree or to be blunt and forthright about some of the differences. >> preparations are under way for a state dinner this evening as president biden looks to reaffirm the country's relationship with india. later today prime minister modi will deliver a message to a joint session of congress. and then a deadly tornado swept through a small town in matador last night. the tornado destroyed at least 20 buildings. in a news conference less than an hour ago, emergency personnel said there's no power in the town. a rescue team is headed there from another town about 70 miles away, but debris from the tornado is blocking highways into town. cinthia pimentel has been
6:12 am
tracking the conditions there. my sister is in austin, far from there, but still feeling the affects of this weather system. >> yeah, to give people a perspective of where we are talking about, matador is north of texas, and the storms have rummaged through the town and as the storms continue, we have to wait for the crews to get out there and the national weather service to get out there and tell us how dramatic the storm was. as we go through today, i am expecting to see similar conditions with the severe weather, and strong winds and possibly the size of ping pong hail out there. we will continue to watch that. meantime, back in the bay area, temperatures still below normal and we will see a warming trend. i will talk about that in my full forecast, but for now, mike, you are helping people get around with the gas prices. >> yeah, concord dominates with
6:13 am
4.29. and then 4.33 in mountain view. and novato has the number here, 4.45, matt and jeff's. as we look at the map, we are talking about the changes we have ahead. the biggest deal is the bay bridge, the exit to treasure island is under way right now, and folks may be crossing the freeway to get to the lower deck. back to you. >> thank you. coming up next on "today in the bay," two east bay brothers are on the verge of nba history. they are expected to be picked up in tonight's draft. ahead at 6:25, they will tell us why this moment has been a long time coming. can't offer you a job in the nba, but there are 1 million open jobs in california.
6:15 am
6:16 am
it's 6:15. let's go to the east bay. pleasant hill, good morning to you. if you are getting ready to head to work this morning, bundle up. it's chilly out there. we are also seeing cloud cover keeping us in the mid to upper 50s through about 9:00 a.m. we will start to see more sunshine as we head into your lunchtime hour, but still breezy
6:17 am
conditions. we will track that coming up in your full forecast. we are tracking a backup at the bay bridge of course as your typical commute. the shift at the treasure island may cause folks to make last-minute changes, so we are warning you about that out of san francisco. california has a million job openings. the bureau of labor statistics just released state-wide jolts data, and that's job opening and labor turnover survey. despite all of our layoffs, there are more open jobs in california than any other state. 112,000 job openings added just last month. now, at the same time there's a childcare cliff coming. federal emergency funding for preschool and childcare put into place during the pandemic runs out in september, and many daycares say they will either
6:18 am
have to reduce the number of children in their care or increase prices, or both. we knew this was coming. the aid to daycare was the last help around. a left-leaning think tank came up with staggering numbers. in california, 84,000 kids could lose childcare because their parents could no longer afford it, and 13,000 childcare programs could close. if you are thinking to yourself, i don't remember getting a check for childcare. it didn't go to you, it went to the childcare facility to help keep prices low and keep employees in there. that goes away, and they will have to raise prices. doesn't matter what you are paying, almost certainly your
6:19 am
daycare will have to raise prices, if they have not already. >> very tough. and with a month to go, "barbie" fans are getting ready for the new movie. >> look at the promo. >> barbie is a doctor and lawyer and so much more than that. >> i thought we discontinued her. >> the new "barbie" movie means new barbie dolls, and they are selling out fast. limited edition dolls are inspired by the movie, and it's inspired by margot robbie. these dolls range from $25 for the ken doll, and $50 for the barbie doll. right now they are still available on amazon. experts say the dolls will sell out fast, especially when the
6:20 am
movie comes out. the collection is also going to include barbie dream house as well as the car. >> we have been talking about the movie so long i thought it was out already. >> next month. >> next month? >> yeah, you still have time to get all your gear and go see the movie together. >> let's get through the day first. >> yeah, the clouds are hanging on overhead. we are seeing it on satellite and radar. this prominent low pressure system sitting over the bay area and the central coast, and it's bringing us cloudy and cool conditions this morning. we have been getting used to the wind as the week goes on, and as the system makes its way out of the area, it will bring the winds out of the south. for your lunchtime hour, it will be breezy out there so hang on
6:21 am
to the napkins, your forks and stuff. in the afternoon, be careful for the 30-mile-per-hour winds as we make our way through the altamont pass through the central valley. let's look at our daytime highs. for today we are sticking to 60s along the coast, and mid to upper 60s along the shoreline. and then 71 in morgan hill. by tomorrow we are going to see the winds die down and the temperatures go up a little bit. we will inch closer to the temperatures rising. as we go into the weekend, take a look at the san francisco pride parade, looking great for sunday. warming ahead for the middle of the week. inland valleys, we will stay in the low 70s through about sunday where we will start to warm up nicely. by the middle of the week, we could see 80s return to the board, but right now we are looking at clear conditions out there right now. >> we talked about fog in some
6:22 am
areas, and we have the backup at the bay bridge, and those are standard things we deal with in the bay area. in the summer months we typically see a lighter commute. over here, the south bay looks great. a quick check of the san mateo bridge, and we see more volume. we don't really see, as we watch here, don't see much brake tapping. traffic is flowing westbound across the peninsula, and there's haze but visibility is fine. back to you. >> thanks, mike. next on "today in the bay," it's a big night for young men hoping to show off their talents in the nba. the nba draft is here but where do the warriors
6:25 am
welcome back. it's 6:24 for you this morning. tonight is the nba draft. >> i always watching this with my dad. tonight the warriors have big decisions to make regarding their roster. the new general manager will be running the show after taking over for bob meyers after losing the conference semifinals. they have the 19th overall selection tonight and it's their only pick. they could try and trade up or move down in the draft or work out a trade for an established player. the new gm says the key is
6:26 am
finding a player that fits the warriors' way. >> being able to play both ways, and defend your position and on the offensive end bringing somebody to the table. despite what people said, the future is bright and we know what we need to do to improve and it's our job to go out and do it. >> but they only have one chance. the spurs have the number one overall pick, and they are expected to draft french star, victor wembanyama. with the 19th pick, the warriors could have a chance to get one of two bay area brothers. >> these twins, brothers, amen thompson on the left, and ausar thompson on the right. those twins skipped college altogether and opting to play in a separate program based out of atlanta, and spoke with today's

bay area and the warm-up i think everybody will like, but for now, the san rafael bridge looks okay. >> yeah, we are looking at the backup that typically forms. i will show you the backup live and then the backup on the map. where it says 580, there's slowing approaching and it's lighter than we often see, and the bay bridge, the backup and the metering lights, of course, westbound. i circled 24, the off-ramp at martin luther king, jr. boulevard, and opposite your commute, it's looking lighter in both directions. we could have a new crash in san pablo, it looks like. we will follow-up on that. back to you. some city council members wants to change call in
6:33 am
comments. >> some of those calls are making anti-semitic comments. >> reporter: good morning, kris and marcus. we saw a similar incident like this happen a couple weeks ago at a city council meeting. you have one of the city council members condemning the remarks and saying he wants to find out a way to limit some of the anti-semitic remarks to keep it from happening again. two callers on tuesday calling in via zoom, and they were anonymous with the anti-semitic remarks, and one individual actually spoke at the last meeting and specifically targeted the jewish councilmember. some are now calling for changes. >> i am disturbed by the comments. i think i am inclined for us to
6:34 am
consider limiting comments by zoom if this is our future, because i don't want to be subject to that anymore. you want to come out of the shadows and stop being a coward, and make your comments in public, not anonymously if you are going to spew that vile, because i don't want to hear it. >> what i think is interesting, this hate speech, these hate groups that are so prideful in what they say is their own race, that they hide in the shadows, that they don't show their face on zoom, that they use anonymous names, and all they do is hide because they know they will be rebuked, they will be fired and ostracized. >> reporter: that was a councilman there speaking and he said he's received a lot of support from the community following the remarks, and we are live in walnut creek, pete suratos for "today in the bay."
6:35 am
>> thank you. two people are hurt, including a child, after a san francisco police patrol car slammed into a local business pinning a motorcyclist in the process. it happened around 5:00 yesterday afternoon in the mission district. there on the screen you saw a red car screaming by. police say it was speeding on 22nd street with an sfpd patrol car close behind. the motorcycle tried to turn at valencia and 22nd into the path and that's when the officer swerved to avoid the motorcyclists that ended up pinned against another car, and a child was thrown by the crash and the motorcyclists and child are expected to be okay. >> the officer made a split-second decision to avoid hitting the motorcyclist, and he could have gone into business.
6:36 am
a shooting happened just before 6:30 last night on 26th street. that's about a block away from the target store on broadway. when officers arrived they found one person who was shot. paramedics rushed that person to the hospital where they died. police are not identifying that victim, and they are still looking for the shooter we are now in the most critical hours. this is in the search for the missing submersible that lost contact while underwater. the five people inside have not been heard from since sunday, and the oxygen supply is believed to have depleted early this morning. >> the coast guard command center is in boston, and that's where jay gray is.
6:37 am
any word, jay? >> reporter: we do expect an update at some point here in boston. we know that this is still being called a search and rescue mission. it will be for the foreseeable future, according to those involved. we also know that they have reached a level where they believe the oxygen for the five men inside may have run out. this morning the unprecedented search and recovery effort is expanding and intensifying. >> i have never seen equipment of that nature move that quickly. >> reporter: the number of ships scanning the surface expected to double from five to ten, and several remotely operated vehicles will join the two underwater drones already looking for the missing sub near the ruins of the titanic. the coast guard in boston focused on an area where
6:38 am
canadian aircraft drop sonar buoys. >> i can't tell you what the noises are, but this is the most important part, we are searching where the noises are and that's the best we can do. >> reporter: and the oxygen on the submersible will run out this morning. >> that's just one piece of data, right, and there are a lot of pieces that we need to consider. >> reporter: crews working around the clock refusing to lose hope. >> it's a search and rescue effort, 100%. >> reporter: look, team leaders say they are in constant communication with the family members of those missing men, and they have assured them that this estimate on the oxygen won't define their effort, that they are going to continue a rescue mission for as long as

6:46 am
impeaching the president? >> no, happens to every president at some point. in 2013, a congressman from texas wanted to impeach president obama because he said he was not born here. and those that wanted to impeach president bush over iraq got to a full vote, and president trump was actually impeached. the house did censure california congressman, adam schiff. the decision was along party lines, republicans voting for and democrats against. the republicans said schiff lied to americans about trump colluded with the russians, and be the mueller report said that
6:47 am
trump did not collude. >> the resolution is adopted -- >> shame! >> the house will be in order. >> shame! >> democrats are yelling shame at mccarthy. the censure has no long-term affect. it's the legislative equivalent of a stern talking to, but politically it may work for schiff. remember, the only people that vote for schiff are californians and a vast majority of them are democrats and schiff is running for the senate from california. republican moderate and former texas congressman, will hurd, wrote in an op-ed, he recently announced he's running for president.

parts of l.a. first and then coming to us -- look at the calendar there, through wednesday into the second half of the week there. we could see the temperatures finally start to feel like normal down here in san josé. we will see the temperatures go from the low 70s to the upper 70s by wednesday. then looking to next weekend, finally pool weather, mike, where the temperatures will be in the mid-80s. right now, carpool lanes are the way to go. >> yeah, cool the carpool, but i like the cool weather and will watch for the changes. here, not much change. the backup at the bay bridge, and this is now summer, so we have fewer school commutes, i guess. over towards san pablo, i am seeing more slowing and still reporting the two left lanes are blocked and that's restricting about half the highway flow so it's a slow drive head into san pablo. you are okay getting down through berkeley and emeryville.
