2023, catastrophe at sea, the search for the missing submersible ends in tragedy. what we're learning about the victims who died on board. plus, new revelations that the navy may have known about the implosion days ago. under alert, dangerous tornadoes, damaging hails and punishing heat threatening millions of americans today. >> where the severe weather is headed this weekend. legal drama. the woman charged with manslaughter in the deadly "rust" movie set shooting now facing a new charges. why prosecutors accuse her of tampering with evidence. and roasted. starbucks workers at more than 150 stores are on strike today. why baristas say a dispute with the chain has left them with a bitter taste. we got a lot of news to get to. thanks for joining us. we're going to begin with the submersible tragedy in the north atlantaic. >> today the focus is on figuring out what caused the catastrophic implosion and thou recover that debris from the ocean floor. a source tells nbc news the coast guard has asked the ntsb for help with the investigation.
12:02 pm
the coast guard says the titan imploded on the way to the titanic wreck site killing all five passengers on board. the senior navy official tells nbc news, a noise consistent with an implosion or explosion was detected on sunday by an underwater system already in place. but it was not definitive. so the decision was made to continue with the search and rescue mission. >> nbc news correspondent ron allen is in st. john's, canada, where this fateful trip began. so ron, where does the recovery process stand right mow? do we know who will be leading this effort? >> reporter: well, it sounds like the u.s. coast guard and the ntsb are going to lead the investigation per se, to determine what happened, although this are several nations involved in this, canada, the u.k., france, and great britain, and so there's, that has to be sorted out. and of course, victims were of various nash analysises as well. it sounds like, we're still trying to get more details about this, that there are some private companies out there,
12:03 pm
that are involved in the mapping process, and potentially the recovery process of some debris. they're trying to figure out what is really doable. and that process could take the rest of the week or so. a week or so. before anything is hoisted. remember, it is two and a half, three miles down on the ocean floor. and a very, very difficult, unforgiving, is the way the u.s. coast guard described the terrain down there. so it is not an easy thing to do. it's a very complicated and very dangerous thing to do, that has to be done by remote vehicles, because it is too dangerous for individuals to go down there. so that's what's happening now. in terms of the recovery, and in terms of the investigation, as we know it, into the cause and what happened, to cause this catastrophe. >> officials are navigating these complications and the families are navigating their zbreef. we have been hearing from family members of the five passengers. what are they saying? >> reporter: well, especially from the dawood family, the

complications to all of this, as this tragedy continues to unfold. >> absolutely. just devastating. ron allen, thank you for that reporting. meanwhile, we are tracking another rounds of severe weather threats from wyoming, to texas, today, scorching temperatures across the southern plains. and it all comes as crews and residents sort through the rubble of wednesday's tornado in matador, texas. the national weather service says it is still investigating a twister that killed four people. and it plans to reveal how strong it actually was by tomorrow. nbc news meteorologist bill karins is tracking the forecast for us, but first, we begin with nbc news correspondent priscilla thompson, in a very, very hot houston, texas, so priscilla, you got the short sleeves on, hope you're staying cool. exactly how hot is it in texas right now? and houston specifically? land is the latest in the recovery effort in matador. >> it is about 96 degrees in houston here right now, with the temperature continuing to tick up. given the splash pad behind me a bit of a break, and there are a

dealing with there, after that tornado swept through not that long ago. we know there are officials on ground trying to determine just how strong that tornado was, there were four people who were killed, 15 people injured, nearly 30 homes and businesses that were destroyed, and today, folks are focused on those cleanup effort, as they are dealing with that very severe heat. and what we're hearing from first responders and rescue folks there, they don't need p water, they don't need food, they don't need clothes, right now they need donations, as they work to clean up and look ahead towards rebuilding that community. kathy? >> long road to recovery. priscilla, thanks. summer has officially begun to. put this in context for us, how unusual is this extreme heat and all of these tornadoes that we've seen and it sounds like there is more to come possibly. >> the heat is not widespread coast to coast. the heat is focused on central and southern portions of texas and there it has been extreme. as hot as anyone can remember. and june last year was the

hottest month texas had ever experienced, the hottest june. two junes in a row of this nonsense. the line of thunderstorms is probably the worst in the country right now. it moves through the oklahoma city area. we had 76 mile-an-hour wind gusts. it is continuing to push now away from interstate 35. and eventually, it is going to get out of here and head for mcalister, with still a threat of strong winds. this afternoon, we're going to see widespread thunderstorms developing. from wyoming, all the way into areas of nebraska and south dakota. and additional storms are possible, maybe an isolated tornado from lubbock, to amarillo. as far as the heat goes, now up to 22 million. whee heat watches issued from tucson, we are still under advisories in wichita and tuls yark and really from del rio to areas, especially toward the coast which is so humid that it feels really hot. and these temperature, no relief. it gets hot ther weekend and continues into next week. no end in sight yet. >> bill karins, thank you.

>> and pri sill la, run through the splash pad and cool off, thank you. the ongoing legal saga, the prosecutors overseeing the set "rust," and a new charge, alleging the person with gun safety has tampered with evidence. nialla charles has the latest. can you walk us through the new twist in the case? what exactly are prosecutors alleging? how are the lawyers for hannah gutierrez-reed responding right mow? >> reporter: prosecutors are essentially saying she tried to save herself, saying the same day the cinematographer halyna hutchins was killed, gutierrez-reed transferred drugs to another person in hopes of avoiding prosecution, and this comes just a week after prosecutors also accused her of being hung over that same day, saying that she often was drinking and smoking marijuana in the evenings, during filming.
12:10 pm
but here, where prosecutors haven't said, is what led to them to this latest charge of tampering with evidence. >> it's just incredible that we're still getting all of these new details two years into this case. i want to bring in the lawyer and legal analyst angela, why this new charge being added right now? >> frankly, it looks ridiculous for the prosecution, because we don't know there's been any new evidence that's actually going to lead to this charge. it's likely information they had from the beginning. so to the defense, to the public, it looks like they need to strengthen their case and perhaps their manslaughter charge is actually weakening and we need something to support, it as nialla said, there was reporting last week about low the prosecution said she was hung over at work, and so thus, she is a me nas. listen, the public response to that was everybody is hung over and that is not a criminal
12:11 pm
charge. so perhaps the prosecution is trying to go up with optics and trying to reframe the narrative, and say no, look, actually she was transporting drugs, it's a bigger issue than just her being hung over. but adding a charge this late in the game just makes the prosecution look like they do not have their act together. >> i mean what about alec baldwin? could he be facing new legal scrutiny with all of this? >> the prosecution has said that they will have about 60 days, i believe, from last week, in order to decide whether or not they will charge alec baldwin. but we think it's unlikely. they only brought this information up in response to the defense's motion to dismiss. this is relevant. because hannah gutierrez-reed, in bringing up this motion, really launched some high profile allegations against the prosecution. they said look, this is selective prosecution and they let alec baldwin go because he is a famous celebrity because he is rich, and targeting me, a young, frankly not well resourced human being targeted. so now, the prosecution has this
12:12 pm
burden to prove to the public, to prove to the courts, the reason why they let her go, or him go, is very different from why they are keeping her on. so i don't actually think they're going to bring back charges against alec baldwin but they raised it as a potential, in order to protect themselves from selected prosecution. >> we'll definitely keep our ice on this one. thank you, angela. thank you nialla charles. a major face to facebook in canada and a popular '90s toy is making a comeback. morgan brennan is joining us with the cnbc money minute. >> facebook and instagram users in canada will lose access to local news on those platforms. this comes after the canadian government passed a flew law requiring tech companies to pay content fees to local media outlets. the parent company meta says it is conducting product tests to have news availability in canada. recalling 7.5 million
