5:02 am
at the trez er island approach. this was jammed up. the building blocked our view and there was barely any traffic flowing. chp did give the clear, all lanes are now clear on the bay bridge. that was the first alert getting into san francisco. no metering lights and that should recover nicely before the bulk of the commute comes in because we do have light traffic right now throughout contra costa and alameda counties. the other alert is in alameda county, southbound 880 around hacienda avenue, a big rig involved in a crash. we had three lanes blocked, now one is blocked. but a lot of activity and just off the castro valley y. so still slow from 238 toward a street. anywhere south is still fine. traffic is still moving. we'll watch as the morning commute buildings. over to you. as we take a look at our weather, it is starting out
5:03 am
cloudy, a little bit of mist and drizzle as you head out in the east bay with a live look outside in oakland. we are seeing a cool morning but our usual start. temperatures in the mid-50s. you may have to turn on the windshield wipers a little as we're getting drizzle coming down. we'll see a mostly cloudy morning through about 9:00 and then gradually clearing out. it's going to be another mild day. take a look at the high temperatures only headed for 68 degrees in hayward and 71 in dublin for a high temperature again today. it's a cool start to the week but gradually it will be heating up. so i'll have more on that coming up in just a few minutes. ginger and laura? >> thanks a lot. police are clearing up a three-car crash in morgan hill that happened late last night. five people, ranging from kids to adults, were hurt. in this video you can see a helicopter had to land on the road to take one person to the hospital. now, at this point officers say two of those people are in critical condition. the crash happened around 9:00

5:05 am
military wagner group fighting in ukraine. nbc news has learned that u.s. intelligence officials knew of his plans to challenge russia's military leaders and briefed congressional leaders on the matter last week. >> when you have one armed force threatening to go to war with another armed force and they're both supposed to be loyal to you, that's bad for vladimir putin. >> reporter: the armed ra bell yen and the deal that ended it exposed deep weaknesses inside the kremlin and raises uncertainty about putin's grip on power. >> it's internal, when you're being challenged from within, as putin has been over the last few days, that also raises profound questions. >> reporter: world leaders are sorting through the fallout of the revolt and its impact on the ongoing war in ukraine. >> vladimir putin has bitten off a lot more than he thought possible when he marched into ukraine. >> reporter: president putin called the rebels' march toward moscow a stab in the back and treason. as part of the deal to stop the

5:08 am
float. we had a go pro video and it gives you a good view of how many people lined up on the streets for the parade. it was fun and a nice day for it. >> it started out a little cloudy in san francisco yesterday, but totally opened up. is that the same thing that's going to happen today? same thing today. we'll start out with clouds. it was misting a little early this morning and you may have that as you're driving around the bay area. once we start to see the clouds breaking apart, it's going to clear out and be a nice and mild day. over the past 24 hours we've had some mountain shower and thunderstorm activity farther to the north and some of that moisture lingering around the bay area this morning. we are also headed for some afternoon sunshine. we will have a pleasant week ahead as it gradually warms up just a few degrees each day, but it's going to be hot this weekend and this is what we're going to be talking a lot about, some of our inland temperatures heading for the 80s and 90s by
5:09 am
the end of the week. still cool temperatures today as you're heading out in morgan hill, mid-50s to start and the sun will peek out around 9:00 to 10:00. the rest of the day clear and sunny and temperatures headed for 79 degrees. we'll talk more about that warm-up in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> we're starting this week where we ended last. south bay's lead is $4.09 at the chevron in morgan hill. it's on monterey street. $4.09 is the best in alameda county, safeaway on dublin boulevard. in san francisco, let's be proud about the $4.39 on gearey boulevard. these are prices you reported through gasbuddy.com. we talked about the two incidents we had, they've both been cleared in the last minutes and speeds have recovered. south through hayward, off of castro valley y, south 880 just past the hacienda over-crossing. our view from emeryville, look
5:10 am
at the taillights carefully. they are barely moving. but that's recovery. you can see closer to the tunnel, it will take a while for the cars to move. there's recovery on the bay bridge as well, the two alerts have been cleared. now we're lining up for the morning commute. we'll track that. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:10 right now. expanding user experience. the new gaming product youtube is reportedly working on and how it aims to change the world of gaming. >> over the weekend we saw a crisis in russia. a lot of people turned to twitter to try to figure out what was happening, but it was twitter. >> also, more than five decades later, a peninsula family is finally getting closure after the long lost remains of a bay area pilot killed in combat are finally coming home. stay with us. you're watching "today ithe you're watching "today ithe bay."n - you ok? - there's a flex alert today

good monday morning. the time is 5:13, as you head out in the east bay we're taking a look at the morning trend for martinez. 55 degrees, cloudy and a breezy wind. a cool start but shaping up to be a very comfortable day as we head for the mid-70s. a look at all of our microclimates coming up. a look at the bay bridge, look how quickly the recovery
5:14 am
happens. the disabled big rig on the other side of the treasure island tunnel, the backup moving more smoothly. recovery on the incline out of oakland should be recovering. we'll check the chp blotter again. it's always active. good morning. very happy monday to you. we are almost to the halfway point, half the year behind us. it's been a very good year for the nasdaq, up 36% for the year, even if it did fall back on friday. the s&p 500 has gained about 13%, so this puts it above the threshold of a bull market. watch novo nordisk, they make drugs like ozempic and wegovy. a paper published this weekend says pill forms are as effective as injections. easier to take and easier to make at a time when it seems everybody wants ozempic. the big news over the weekend
5:15 am
was the wagner group marching on moscow and then turning around. it could have been a perfect time for twitter. the first major worldwide crisis where you need the best information from the most knowledgeable people since elon musk took over, and you wanted to depend what you were reading was true. but of course that's not what twitter is anymore. verification badges are for sale. so it's hard to tell who is who. a badge and a ukrainian flag doesn't mean that person was anywhere near ukraine. >> the "washington post" says it's gotten its hands on documents, video meetings from twitter where execs sat and talked the day before the violence at the capitol on january 6th, 202 #. so meetings from january 5th. the post says the documents come from the house select committee and in the notes and videos, twitter executives discussed the possibility of upcoming violence
5:16 am
but decide not to censor the postings. this is despite accusations twitter was working with the government to police speech. the post says there's no evidence of that. do you remember the picture of the girls doing their homework outside a central valley taco bell because it had wi-fi? the white house today will announce $40 billion in new grants for broadband access throughout america, part of the bipartisan infrastructure package. we're going to find out how much california and all the other states get later this afternoon. >> long time coming. >> long time coming. now, i will say the next day the school administration gave them a wi-fi hot spot so they could do everything at home. but obviously we can't do that for everybody, or can we? that's what this is going to be right? it's the attempt to get wi-fi into every home at broadband speeds throughout america. >> and i think in silicon valley we're so used to having everything at our fingertips, you forget about these communities right here in
5:17 am
california. >> absolutely. >> you look at the tenacity of the kids just trying to get it done. >> i was going to say, you kind of throw it back a little bit, and wrout the luxury of wi-fi, without the ease of technology, sometimes you've got to go on pure motivation. that's why that image was so impactful. >> we should follow that little girl, all of the places she'll go, right? >> until she's our boss. >> exactly. which could be soon. thank you very much. 5:17 right now. youtube is testing a new program for online games. the "wall street journal" reports youtube's parent company google invited employees to start testing out that product. it will be called playables, it means people will now have access to youtube games on phones or computers. this marks youtube's efforts to move away from just livestreaming videos of people playing video games. youtube has not announced when playables will be available to
5:18 am
everyone. one bay area woman finally has answers after her husband was reported missing while fighting the vietnam war. >> scientists were able to identify his remains in vietnam 54 years later. can you imagine, laura? my goodness. this is joyce desoto, who married ernie and they had three kids together before ernie went to serve as an air force fighter pilot in the vietnam war. once the war ended, desoto never came back. he was presumed dead but joyce never got his body or any news of what happened. this was until 2021 when a u.s. recovery operation in vietnam found one of desoto's bones. it took more than a year but sign activities were able to use dna to confirm the bones belonged to desoto. >> it means a lot. it means a lot. just to put him to rest so that we can feel better about him not
5:19 am
being tortured or any of that awfulness. >> some of his remains are coming home. this friday the family will hold a funeral at the golden gate cemetery. this will include a military flyover. ernie desoto got a purple heart for his service. >> a little bit of closure, but all those years of mystery. >> we thank them for the service, the families as well. we forget that it doesn't end on a specific date. so now they have another chapter. >> and beautiful pictures of that family, too, right? >> what are the chances that they find a bone and then they're able to then use the dna. >> amazing to see. it's 5:19. monday morning, here we go. >> we're going to see a lot of changes, especially for the inland valleys that have had mild temperatures. today is going to be a great day for enjoying time outside, going
5:20 am
for a hike. here is a look at your east bay forecast, starting out cloudy, temperatures in the mid-50s. we're going to gradually warm up and head for the mid-70s as we go into today. mostly sunny skies and breezy winds. at times it may get very gusty, especially in san francisco. take a look at our wind speeds, at 3:00 this afternoon we have 20 to 30-mile-per-hour winds and it may be even higher in san francisco. so expect it to be windy throughout the afternoon into the evening, as we still get this push of some slightly cooler than normal temperatures all across the bay area, headed for 75 degrees in livermore, 66 for a high temperature in oakland today, and 75 in novato. and then as we go into tomorrow, some of those temperatures in the inland areas go up a degree or two. so santa rosa hitting 79 degrees, and we're seeing upper 70s for los gatos, low 70s for san jose, and then we see temperatures trending upward as
5:21 am
well, heading into wednesday, and that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen shows your microclimate and how warm it's going to be by the end of the week. so we're going to start to see this large area of high pressure that's finally going to bring in some heat for the inland areas, but we have enough of an ocean breeze to keep the coasting areas cool. we're going to see a wide range in temperatures. take a look at how hot it's going to be this weekend in a spot like san jose, farther inland, where we'll see temperatures going from the low 70s to the low 90s this weekend. get ready for that, make sure the pool is cleaned out or you know someone with a pool where you can visit. take a look at these numbers. we're going from low 70s to upper 80s and low 90s, while san francisco won't see as much of a drastic change, we're going from low 60s to low 70s by the weekend. mike, you're starting to see a ripple effect for the morning commute? >> i was very excited because the big rig had been cleared from the bay bridge, the backup
5:22 am
was just starting to form. i thought, okay, we've missed a problem for the morning commute. but it ripples back to the bay bridge, just as the rig was clearing, there was enough backup where they needed to turn the metering lights on. this is about a half hour earlier than we would normally see this backup on the oakland side. so if you're leaving oakland to san francisco, you will have a delay before you get onto the span. this is creating good recovery on the span so the metering lights are serving their purpose for the bay bridge. out of oakland you will see a backup and it may be alarming to folks. chill out, because things are moving better. the backup is at the toll plaza but the metering lights should speed up. it's 5:22 now and that's not much earlier than the backup and slowing if you get there in the next few minutes. there is a crash coming into novato southbound 101. we'll check on the details from chp coming up. the rest of the bay, south of the bay bridge, everything is
5:23 am
moving smoothly. we see slowing south 680 on the southbound side. back to you. >> thank you. toxic algae posing a threat to sea life off the california coast. coming up next, the reason experts are now getting worried it could have an impact on the seafood we eat. much more ahead. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:26 am
new video this morning as crews work in the late night hours to contain a wildfire near corona. this happened south of the riverside freeway around 8:40 last night. about five acres were burned when crews finally got it contained about an hour later. fortunately, no one was hurt. turning to our climate in crisis, a microscopic menace is in the ocean off of the coast of california. >> toxic algae blooms in southern california have been filling dolphins, sea lions and seals by the hundreds. experts say they expect hundreds more are sick because of the toxins in their systems. it affects the brain and heart and can lead to seizures, disorientation, aggression and death. >> i've never seen anything like this to my recollection. this is the largest amount of animals we've had in the mammal

what you need to keep in mind before you hit the roads. this is "today in the bay." good morning. i'm ginger conejero saab. marcus washington has the day off. >> good to have you. i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast for this monday morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. it's been mild recently. it's been mild and we're going to continue with a few more days of mild weather before we have big changes. we're taking a live look outside in san jose, starting out cloudy, maybe even misting as you're driving to work. we're going to see it clearing out as we head into late morning into the afternoon. taking a look at the trend for oakland, we're going from 53 degrees at 6:00 to about 63 degrees at noon as we start to see a lot more sunshine, high temperatures there staying on the cool side, in the mid-60s today. as you make your way inland, mid-70s for livermore, upper 70s for morgan hill and up to 80 degrees for fairfield.
5:32 am
so still wide-ranging temperatures. we'll get a look ahead to the rest of the week's forecast in a few minutes. mike, you've been tracking a few issues and the ripple effect. >> a ripple from the earlier disabled vehicle on the bay bridge span that caused an early backup which caused early metering lights. this is a bigger backup than you would normally expect at 5:31 unless you've been watching us since 5:00. a look at the maze, just before you get to the 880 crossing, things will not get better necessarily but they will be back to the typical backup i think over the next half hour. we don't see anything else outstanding except for southbound 680, before highway 4 on the right side, there is a disabled trailer there. there may be a trailer fire. we'll track that as you're coming down into concord. the san mateo bridge we did have some flashing lights. it looks like they cleared from the flat section. i'll check as the volume builds.
5:33 am
back over to you. >> thank you very much. happening today, lawmakers are scrambling to find ways to save bay area mass transit system. the transit systems collective by face a $2.5 billion shortfall over the next five years. >> today a bay area lawmaker is set to introduce a plan that could raise nearly a billion dollars, but it's going to cost drivers more to cross the bay area's toll bridges. "today in the bay"'s thom jensen is live at the toll plaza in oakland. what is this going to mean for commuters? >> reporter: well, good morning to both of you. what that will mean is the tolls right ou on the bay bridge and other bridges are $7. that would be with the $1.50 increase, $8.50 at each of the toll gates here and all other bay area toll bridges, with the exception of golden gate bridge. more than 220,000 cars per day go through this bridge toll plaza on the bay bridge on average daily, so the rate hike
5:34 am
would raise at least $330,000 daily just here. senator scott winer and josh becker are introducing a bill this afternoon. transit systems across the region face a $2.5 billion shortfall over the next five years and senate bill 532 will bring in nearly a billion over that time period. winer said losing the transit agencies would be devastating for the bay area. the increase would apply to the bay bridge, the san mateo bridge, the richmond bridge and dumbarton, carquinez, antioch bridges, all would have the $8.50 toll. we'll hear more from the press conference later this afternoon at about 11:30. we're live in oakland, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> i remember when it was a dollar no cross the bay bridge. i'm dating myself. >> oh, my gosh. >> how things have changed.
5:35 am
>> thank you very much. 5:34 right now. happening today, the three family members accused in the death of a 3-year-old family member during an exorcism ritual are expected in court for a plea hearing. the grandfather and the uncle and child's mother all face charges. authorities say the girl suffocated during an exorcism-type ceremony. investigators say her family told police they were trying to drive an evil spirit from her body. the church where the 3-year-old died is the same one that was searched last year after a 3-month-old baby was kidnapped from a san jose home. we are working to learn more about this crash that sparked a brush fire in the east bay. the chp says this happened along kirker pass near clayton. now, a car hit a tree, sparking a fire. you can see that car fully engulfed in flames. take a look at that.
5:36 am
now, the fire growing to two alarms at one point. as of 12:30 last night, concord police tweeted that kirker pass was expected to be closed for several hours. we are working to learn what led up to the crash and if anyone was hurt. there's an urgent call for blood donors during what hospital workers call trauma season. the nonprofit blood donation organization is urging people to donate blood this summer. workers say blood donations are the lowest around july. at the same time, more blood is needed in the summer because injuries from outdoor activities increase. they are hosting different donations centers during july. a donation truck will be at st. agustin catholic church on july 2nd, on the 2nd at st. peter's catholic church in pacifica, on july 5th, westfield oakridge shopping center. there will be donation centers through the rest of july.
5:37 am
you can see the rest of the locations or find one near you on our website, nbcbayarea.com. san francisco's 2023 pride weekend is finally in the books. now, pride organizers estimate a quarter million people headed to the city for the annual parade and festival. mayor london breed and house speaker nancy pelosi were among the attendees. many are calling this year's festivities a huge success with a positive economic impact on the city. after the parade, thousands stuck around at the civic center for free concerts. attendees told us the events felt safe and welcoming. >> it's our first pride together, so for us it's magical. it's wonderful that i get to spend it with my wife. and my daughter and her best friend. >> pride organizers say this
5:38 am
year's events cost close to $3.5 million. to a live look at sfo this morning, where it could get busy. aaa is predicting the fourth of july holiday will be the busiest ever for travel, both in the air and on the roads. more than 50 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home. a majority of those people expect to drive, 43.2 million people. analysts say it has to do with lower gas prices compared to last year. the national average is $3.60 per gallon, which is more than a dollar less compared to last year. 4 million americans are expected to fly, which is up more than 10% compared to 2022. developing this morning, a severe thunderstorm ripped through parts of georgia yesterday and left one person dead. the storm tore down trees and power lines and thousands are out of power in atlanta. a 53-year-old man was walking
5:39 am
his dog when he was hit with a falling tree. he later died from his injuries. meteorologist kari hall is tracking where that storm will be headed next. what does it look like? unfortunately this time of year it's very common to have these kinds of thunderstorms develop between spring and summer. you have the daytime heating and we start to see complexes of thunderstorms cause convective complexes and they develop in the daytime with the heat and humidity. there were three of them across the region that caused hail, straight-line winds and even tornadoes. we're going to be continuing to monitor as we go into today, although in georgia, parts of the atlanta metro area, we are going to see the weather calming down there. taking a look at the bay area, we've had really nice conditions, comfortable temperatures and slightly cooler than normal for a lot of spots. we're going to start out with some morning clouds and then head for some afternoon sunshine, and a pleasant week ahead for much of the bay area.
5:40 am
but our temperatures will be gradually warming up. by the weekend, our inland valleys will feel some hot temperatures, reaching into the 80s and 90s, and we're going to see heat toward the end of the week. so we're still enjoying the nice weather today with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s across many of our microclimates, and then once again gradually warming up. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you've got an early day out of the east bay. >> we expect the metering lights to be turning on right about now and the backup to be forming over the next 20 minutes, but it's formed in the last 20, 30 minutes. the backup is because there was a backup on the span and this makes things on the span itself better at the oakland side. the backup is clearly visible. speed sensors are starting to build on the incline. this is better than you would see on a typical 5:40 report because the approach into san francisco is actually better. net gain, net loss, everything
5:41 am
is about equal. coming off of the maze. people who will be leaving for the evening commute, if you're heading to treasure island, the exit is on the right and there's no more exit on the left. so keep that in mind. we have a trailer on southbound 680 blocking one lane as you're going toward highway 4. i believe one lane is blocked. there's no fire. it's a horse trailer. no injuries reported in the area. 101 slows at ralston southbound for a crash distraction heading northbound. back to you. >> thanks a lot, mike. new video of a hiker rescued in the north bay coming up. how chp crews were able to hoist the hiker to safety. >> all eyes are on russia as the american intelligence agencies try to figure out what's going on. >> plus, recent grads, listen up. we'll break down the best cities that could possibly help you kick-start your career.

the time is 5:44. let's head to the north bay with a look at napa. we're starting out at 55 degrees, cloudy, maybe even drizzling. as we go into the rest of today, clearing out and another nice and comfortable afternoon. we're going to see things changing throughout the rest of the week. we're going to talk more about
5:45 am
that coming up in a few minutes. we're looking toward fremont where traffic looks fine. the nimitz is moving, predictable. we have no problem out of the tri-valley. we do have the issue at the bay bridge, the early backup and there may be a new crash somewhere near the toll plaza. we'll bring you the latest coming up. 5:45. chp had to rescue a hiker in sonoma who was injured while hiking. this was on the grape stomp trail. it's new video of the chp rescue, and you can see how first responders here are treating the hiker. the chp used one of their helicopters to hoist the hiker out and take them to an ambulance at the start of the trail. first responders say the hiker fell on the trail and needed help. my goodness. the hiker was taken to a hospital and is expected to be okay. >> that is always such incredible video. they find them and then the rescue.

it's good to see. well, the u.s. coast guard is launching a marine board of investigation into that titan submersible implosion. investigators are trying to determine where the submarine experienced a catastrophic failure which killed five people onboard. as part of its investigation, the board can make recommendations to pursue civil or criminal sanctions. the submersible disappeared june 18th on a mission to survey the wreckage of the titanic, which is 900 nautical miles east of cape cod, massachusetts. the whole world, including the white house, is watching to see what happens now in moscow. >> scott mcgrew joins us. president biden has spoken with ukrainian president zelenskyy. >> yes, they spoke on sunday. it seems like world leaders were just as surprised as the rest of us that one of putin's loyalists would march on moscow. the president gets his daily brief at 11:00 a.m. our time,
5:47 am
he's being constantly updated on the situation. last year president biden said of russian president putin, that man cannot remain in power. we're all watching what's happening in russia, wondering what's next. the russian ministry of defense released this video without sound of russia's defense minister meeting with officers. we don't know how new this video is, but the idea here seems to be showing him still in charge. here is our secretary of state, antony blinken, on "meet the press" sunday. >> 16 months ago, russian forces were on the doorstep of kyiv in ukraine, believing they would take the capital in a matter of days and erase the country from the map as an independent country. now what we've seen is russia having to defend moscow, its capital, against mercenaries of its own making. so in and of itself, that's extraordinary. >> indeed, it is.

former u.s. ambassador to russia, michael mcfaul, will be live from his offices later on the "today" show telling us what he's hearing coming up at 7:00. to the campaign, a new nbc news poll of republican voters taken shortly after trump was indicted on federal charges show trump pulling ahead of his competitors. most notably, florida governor ron desantis. 22% support desantis. that's a drop from 31% last month. as one pundit put it, the more people get to know desantis, the less they like him. these are not all the candidates for republican nomination, but the most popular. former president trump campaigned in michigan over the weekend, a state he lost in 2020. he spoke out against electric cars. >> electric cars will kill more than half of u.s. auto jobs and decimate the suppliers, they're being decimated already, it will
5:49 am
decimate the suppliers and decimate your jobs and decimate more than anybody else the state of michigan. >> decimate, one out of ten, it's entirely possible that's true. the trend toward electric cars may cause job losses or job changes because electric cars use far fewer moving parts. you don't need a team working on a carburetor design or a tailpipe system if the car doesn't have one. >> president biden will announce billions of dollars in grants for states for broadband internet, part of the bipartisan infrastructure package. we'll talk more about that as we talk business coming up in about a half an hour. >> we'll check back with you. thanks, scott. new this morning, it's graduation season and many college graduates start looking for their first jobs. >> welcome to reality. >> exactly. a new report has ranked the best u.s. cities to start those careers. welcome to adulting. >> still working on it.
5:50 am
just kidding. the new report rated u.s. cities based on job growth, percentage for remote workers, commute time and income rent gap. austin, texas, tops the list with job growth and remote work, and next in seattle, washington, then salt lake city, then san jose rounds out the list at number ten. look at that for the south bay. and trending this morning, well, there's a new ugliest dog in the world. >> and the dog received the title in petaluma. this is scooter, a 7-year-old chinese crusted from arizona. scooter's legs are deformed so his joints are backwards. his original owner took him to be euthanized, but an animal rescue group saved him, and now scooter uses a cart sometimes to get around. scooter will be on the "today" show this morning. for so many years, that

particular bleed, chinese crested, always traditionally wins. sometimes their tongues are hanging out. they're very unique. >> i wanted to give my dog that haircut. >> a mohawk. >> yeah. >> too much product. >> maybe he put some sunscreen in his hair. >> they don't have a lot of hair. is scooter going to fare space well today? >> this afternoon it's going to warm up. we're headed for more sunshine. as you're heading out in the east bay, it's a cool, cloudy and maybe drizly morning. in union city it's 56 degrees and we'll drop another couple of degrees over the next few hours and then start to see it warming up and clearing out. i think we'll see a lot more sunshine by 10:00 to 11:00, and then as we head toward the afternoon we're going to see it clearing and become mostly

sunny. the temperatures in hayward reaching 68 degrees, as you make your way to much of the north bay it's going to be in the mid to upper 70s. san francisco, we're staying in the low 60s today and then tomorrow we're going to see more of the same. but then we see some of our valley temperatures going up a few degrees on wednesday, with santa rosa reaching 82 degrees. we'll see low 80s in concord as well. so the trend this week will be for warmer temperatures to come in as high pressure builds, and finally we're going to get some hot weather in the inland valleys, while there will be just enough of an ocean breeze to keep the coastal areas cool. take a look at the next ten days. i don't know if you're ready for this, brentwood. a little shock there. we're going from low to mid-80s to 103 degrees on saturday. so, yeah, make friends with someone with a pool, clean out your pool if you have one. expect some friends over. it's going to be hot this weekend, while most of our inland areas will be up to about

90. mike, you're checking out reports of a crash at the bay bridge. >> we had the early backup and we're on regular pace, maybe a little heavier than you would expect at 5:52. i see some flashing lights on the left side of the approach but the right side there are reports of a big rig and a dump truck off of the roadway. the activity is off of the main approach to the bay bridge. the backup is not that bad, actually, highway 37, highway 4, typical slowing. the north bay we do have good news. south 101 at san antonio, the earlier crash causing a backup out of petaluma. that has cleared. back to you. thanks, mike. happening now, animal shelters across the bay area continue to be over capacity and say they need to clear it before they start euthanizing. the oakland animal shelter currently has 73 kennels and 98 big dogs. now, if those dogs don't get

adopted by tomorrow, they could be put down. last week bay area shelter directors reached out to the public urging adoptions so they won't have to euthanize any dogs. they're also looking for people who can foster. we're also celebrating a bay area war veteran, not just any veteran. one of the very few left who served in world war ii. we'll have ahead what is trending on that, and we'll also take a look at a veteran that was celebrated in a very unique way, fighting in the vietnam war, finally bringing some closure for his family. >> at 6:00, new rules take effect in some of the areas most at risk for wildfires. ahead in a live report, the action being taken to boost safety during the summer months. and a quick reminder, you can watch nbc bay area news whenever you would like. we're 24/7 on roku and other streaming platforms. you can watch live breaking news, news conferences and news, news conferences and repeats of our newscasts flex alert! flex alert!
