today. you're not going to get much warmer today in san francisco. meanwhile, the inland valleys continue to enjoy some beautiful weather with some low 70s in fremont and 75 in livermore. also 75 in novato. and we are going to start to feel that summer heat for at least the inland areas by the end of the week. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, the bay bridge will be a little more crowded than you would expect. >> this is probably the last report i'll say that because this view after 6:10, standard with the backup at the toll plaza itself. this formed early because of an issue on the span. that cleared quickly, before 5:00, but at 5:00 they turned on the metering lights. there was a crash reported at the toll plaza area but it looks like it's out of lanes. there may be another incident on the approach to san francisco, so i'm going to scour the reports. the rest of the east bay and north bay operating standard as far as the slowing patterns. south 680 extra low toward

highway 4 for the disabled horse trailer that may be blocking one lane. the south bay has a build for north 101 in san jose and traffic feeding in out of san martin, and of course the volume will build for the south bay as well. >> thank you, mike. cal fire has burn permits today in multiple north bay counties. >> "today in the bay"'s pete suratos joins us live to talk about what it means and which counties will be impacted. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, starting today you're going to have burn permits suspended in napa and solano counties, and of course this comes back to decreasing wildfire risks as we approach the warm months ahead in the summer. according to cal fire, they say there's a high volume of dead grass in these areas, so you combine that with heat that's going to increase the wildfire risk. that means outdoor residential burning will not be permitted during this time. temporary permits will be available but only for public health and safety reasons, so we're talking land management or

fire training. now, cal fire reminds people to create a defensible space around their homes, you want to create at least 100 feet of defensible space. sonoma county will get similar restrictions that will begin next week. cal fire says they have responded to nearly 2,000 wildfires this year. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, pete. cal fire says -- let's go to this story first. police are clearing up a three-car crash in morgan hill that happened late last night. cal fire says nine people, ranging from kids to adults, were hurt. take a look at this video. you can see a helicopter had to land on the road to take one of those people to the hospital. at this point officers say two of those people are in critical condition. now, here is where the crash happened. it happened around 9:00 last night at gallop drive and east

laura ginger. >> how is this impacting the support for ukraine? >> the biden administration continues to double down on its support for the ukrainian people. in fact, president biden and president zelenskyy did speak about this issue over the phone over the weekend, and president biden reaffirmed the u.s.'s support. >> a lot there. thank you so much, brie. also, happening today, golden gate ferry will begin operating on a new service schedule. take note. no trips are being canceled. the timings are just being slightly adjusted according to

golden gate ferry. the earliest ferry leaves larkspur at 6:35, leaves tiburon at 6:45 and sausalito at 7:00 this morning. some departure gates in san francisco will also be changed and an additional weekend trip between tiburon and san francisco will also be added. this change comes one week before fares are set to increase on july 1st. ferry service managers say these changes are all being made to better align with ridership demand. 6:08 right now. we're celebrating pride all month long at nbc bay area, and over the weekend major cities across the u.s. took a moment to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of lbgtqia americans. in seattle, organizers estimate nearly 300,000 people turned out for their parade. similar events were held in chicago, denver and minneapolis. we've got the view from the san francisco pride parade on market

street yesterday. our nbc bay area and telemundo family were there with a float. a lot of colors on that universal float, a lot of cheer, too. a lot of folks dancing to music and a lot of banners and fun. and we've got to get a look at how it actually looked from the float. we sped up a go pro video while the float was rolling down the street. look at all the people lining the streets of san francisco for that big annual celebration. nice to see everybody out and about. >> and we were mentioning look how beautiful the weather looks yesterday. >> yeah, nice and cool. >> that's right. that cloud cover is covering us this morning. >> it's covering us this morning but it's going to clear out again today. starting out cool across the bay area. keeping our temperatures down as well. so we are going to continue to head back to some mild weather after seeing some mountain showers and thunderstorms developing, and especially farther to the north. looping the past 24 hours, it's

the week. i'll show you the complete microclimate forecast in a few minutes. and we're looking at fremont's commute for southbound 880, headlights coming past tesla and toward the south bay. no problems here. it's slower into another portion of fremont, south 680 really showing slowing through the tri-valley. good morning. very happy monday to you. we're almost to the halfway point, half the year behind us, and it's been a very good year for the nasdaq, up 36% for the year. lost a little on friday, but 36% over the last six months. s&p 500 gained 13%, just above the threshold of a bull market. do watch novo nordisk, they make the drugs like ozempic and wegovy. a paper published this weekend in the journal "the lancet" says pill forms are as effective as injections, so those are easier

to make, pills are, at a time when it seems like everybody wants ozempic. the big news over the weekend, the wagner group marching on moscow and then turning around. a time when people turned to social media to find out what's going on, and it was the first major worldwide crisis since elon musk took control of twitter. but it was hard to determine online what was real. remember, verification badges on twitter are now for sale, so it's hard to tell who's who. many turned back to mainstream media to find out the latest. cnn's oliver darcy writing since elon musk took a sledgehammer to twitter's verification system, the platform is far less useful so people are depending on traditional newsrooms for verifiable information. >> the twitter executives talked a day before violence against

the capitol january 6th, 2021, so meetings from january 5th. the post says the documents come from the house select committee and twitter's executives discussed the possibility of upcoming violence, but decide not to censor postings. despite accusations twitter was working with the government to police speech. the government says there's no evidence of that. remember the picture of the girls doing homework outside the central valley taco bell because it had wi-fi? the white house will announce $40 million in broadband access across america and we're going to find out how much california and other states get so that this doesn't have to happen again, later this afternoon. obviously we're a very big state, so we'll get a nice chunk of it. but lots of rural states are having the same problem, oklahoma, nebraska, getting the broadband out to the very small communities out in the middle of

welcome back. turning to our climate in crisis, a microscopic menace in the ocean off the coast of california. >> toxic algae blooms in southern california have been killing dolphins, sea lions and seals by the hundreds and experts say they can expect hundreds more animals are sick because of the toxins in their system. the algae affects the brain and heart and can lead to seizures, disorientation, aggression, miscarriages and death. >> i've never seen anything like this, to my recollection. this is the largest pulse of animals that we've had, at least in the mammal response side. >> the marine mammal care center has been working to help what animals it can. in the past two weeks it has rescued 50 animals and officials are worried toxins are in the food humans consume. they are warning people not to eat sport harvested mussels, clams or scallops from santa barbara county. next, top stories we're

feel like we're in the first full week of summer. but, yes, we'll get there. so let's get you started this morning in the north bay with a look at petaluma, where it's right now only 50 degrees. it's cloudy, maybe drizzling a little bit. as we go toward late morning it's going to be clearing out. we have sunshine the rest of the day as our temperatures warm up in that area. we're headed for the mid-and low 70s from dublin to fremont, with san jose reaching 73 degrees. we'll stay in the 60s in san francisco, another cool day as it slowly clears out heading into the afternoon. so more on that in a few minutes. mike, you're taking a look at the drive across the bay bridge taking a little longer. >> it started this morning and continued. even though the disabled big rig cleared from the span, the issue is the taillights going away from us around the bend, still slow all the way into san francisco. the early backup at the bay bridge was formed because they activated the metering lights at about 5:00. there was a disabled big rig on the san francisco side.

that cleared from the span, pretty much around the same time, but they have residual slowing, the bay bridge remembers the slower drive. aside from that, everything looks like it's moving smoothly. i'll point out an issue for the tri-valley coming up. 6:31. happening today, lawmakers are scrambling to find ways to save bay area mass transit systems. the transit system collectively faces a $2.5 billion shortfall over the next five years. >> and today a bay area lawmaker is set to introduce a plan that could raise nearby a billion, but it's going to cost commuters some money and drivers to cross the bay area's toll bridges. "today in the bay"'s thom jensen is live at the bay bridge toll plaza in oakland. i don't know if this is good news for drivers. >> reporter: no, i can imagine, especially people who have to commute over the bridges every

day. right now it's $7, the bridge toll. bay area state lawmakers, senator scott wiener and josh becker proposing a $1.50 increase, which means bridge tolls will be going up to $8.50. more than 220,000 cars go through just the bay bridge toll plazas on average daily. so it would raise $330,000 each day. they'll introduce the bill this morning in sacramento. wiener says it could bring in near a billion dollars for the next five years, cutting the projected deficit in half. the toll increases would apply to the bay bridge, the san mateo, the richmond bridge and dumbarton, carquinez, and antioch bridges as well. all of them would have the $8.50

toll. the golden gate bridge is already $8.40, so that toll would not increase. all of the rest of them would. you're watching "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot, thom. we're still on some driver news, commute news this morning. we're learning within the last 45 minutes at kirker pass road near clayton is finally back open. it was closed for several hours after a crash sparked a brush fire around 10:00 last night. you can see that car that's fully engulfed in those flames. the fire growing to two alarms at one point, scorching at least 30 acres. we are still working to learn what led up to the crash and if anyone was hurt. happening today, the three family members accused in the death of a 3-year-old family member during an exorcism ritual are expected in court. the grandfather, renee hernandez, the uncle and the child's mother all face charges.

authorities say the girl suffocated during an exorcism-type ceremony. investigators say the family told police they were trying to drive an evil spirit from her body. the church where the 3-year-old died is the same one that was searched last year after a 3-month-old baby was kidnapped from a san jose home. a live look at sfo this morning, where it could get pretty busy. aaa is predicting this fourth of july will be the busiest ever for travel in the air and on the road. more than 50 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home. a majority of those people expect to drive, 43.2 million people. this all has to do with lower gas prices compared to last yeefr, analysts say. the national average is $3.66 per gallon, which is more than a dollar less compared to the prices last year. so 4 million americans are

expected to fly, up more than 10% compared to 2022. pride organizers estimate a quarter million people headed to the city for the annual parade and festival. mayor london breed and former house speaker nancy pelosi were among the attendees, following a slew of violence in san francisco that's really dominated headlines in recent months, many are calling this a huge success with positive economic impact on the city. after the parade, thousands stuck around for free concerts, including a llujt(q by artist haley. the attendees told us the event felt safe and welcoming. >> it's our first pride, so it's magical. it's wonderful that i get to spend it with my wife, and my daughter and her best friend. >> pride organizers say this year's event cost close to $3.5 million. there's an urgent call for blood donors this morning during

what hospital workers call trauma season. the nonprofit blood donation organization is urging people to donate blood this summer. workers say blood donations are the lowest around july. at the same time, more blood is needed in the summer because injuries from outdoor activities increase. a ton of different donation centers will be across the bay area during july. on july 1st the donation truck will be at st. agustin catholic church, on the 2nd at st. peter's catholic church in pacifica, on july 5th the truck moves to san jose at westfield oakridge shopping center. there will be more donation centers throughout the rest of july. you can see the rest of the locations, find one near you, on our website at nbcbayarea.com. well, laura, on monday, look at what's trending this morning. there's a new ugliest dog in the world. >> the dog received the title right here in petaluma. this is scooter, a 7-year-old

chinese crusted from arizona. scooter's legs were deformed so his legs are backwards, including his hind legs, but he still gets around. he uses a cart sometimes to zip around. scooter and his owner were on the "today" show this morning. his owner says scooter lives his life in a very innocent way. >> scooter, you know, he has no idea that he has a defect and he was born that way, and he is full of self-confidence. >> good for scooter. his owner, linda elmquist, says the competition is not at all about making fun of dogs' ugliness, it's all about loving all dogs, regardless of how they look and bring them together. a good time to remind you, kitten season, full swing, all the shelters, a lot of them in the bay area are very full, so they're looking for new forever homes. so get out there if you can do it. >> that's right.

scooter looks like he's found his forever home. >> got to take my dog for a walk later today, kari. can i make it early in the day, or all day? >> today is all day. as we head toward the end of the week, it's definitely during the morning when you want to try to get out there and spend more time. today we're starting out with clouds and a little bit of some mist and drizzle in some spots, but turning into afternoon sunshine. the rest of the week is looking pretty nice and gradually warming up a few degrees each day, especially for the inland areas. this weekend we're going to be talking a lot about the heat coming our way because we haven't gotten acclimated to the temperatures and what we're expecting as we go toward the end of the week. today in walnut creek it will reached into the low to mid-70s, so still pretty nice around the bay area. mid to upper 70s for some of our warmest spots inland, while the coastal areas will still be in the 50s and low 60s. mike, you've got a warning

about delays out of the east bay. >> we know the san mateo bridge is going to see more slowing around the toll plaza, start to change the feed coming off the castro valley y. we talked last week about the fourth of july holiday, it's going to be about 9% lower according to what waze reported. we expected a lighter build but we have more slowing through the tri-valley. south 680 is closed for work possibly all day and that distraction is causing folks to slow down off the castro valley y. that will slow you down south of there. everything looks smooth, but off of 84, the backup will have the build as well as you come down toward the 680 interchange. highway 13, you will have one lane closing in the next few minutes, possibly lasting for some delays through the piedmont area and oakland. meanwhile, the westbound commute is moving just fine. a new incident around the richmond bridge. so far, the speed sensors look

good monday morning. it is now 6:43, as you get ready to head out the door in the south bay, it's starting out cloudy but will clear out by 9:00. the rest of the day is sunny. it will also be another comfortable day as our high temperatures only reach the low 70s. enjoy it, because soon it's going to get really hot. we'll talk about that in the forecast coming up. we're looking at the richmond bridge, the toll plaza here, a crash was reported near the toll plaza, but everything is off to the shoulder. we do see some shuffling but no surprises as you're getting over from richmond into san rafael on westbound 580 right now. >> thanks a lot, mike. the chp had to rescue a hiker in sonoma who was injured while hiking.

this was on the grape stomp trail near bartholomew memorial park. you can see the first responders treating the hiker. now, chp used one of their helicopters to hoist the hiker out and take them to an ambulance at the start of the trail. first responders say the hiker fell on the trail and needed help. that hiker was taken to a hospital and is expected to be okay. the u.s. coast guard is launching a marine board of investigation into the titan submersible implosion. investigators are trying to determine why the submarine experienced a catastrophic failure which killed five people onboard. as part of the investigation, the board can also make recommendations to pursue civil or criminal sanctions. the submersible disappeared june 18th on a mission to survey the wreckage of the titanic, which is 900 nautical miles east of cape cod, massachusetts. the whole world, including the white house, is watching.

>> certainly so. scott mcgrew joins us now. president biden has spoken with ukrainian president zelenskyy. >> yes, they're watching over this russian incident that happened over the weekend. it seemed like world leaders were just as surprised as the rest of us that one of putin's loyalists would march on moscow, even if he did turn around. the president gets his presidential daily briefing at 11:00 a.m. our time, though he's constantly updated on the situation. last year president biden said of president putin, for god's sake, that man cannot remain in power. we're all watching what's happening, wondering what's next. the russian ministry of defense released this video without sound of russia's defense minister meeting with officers, that he's still at work. we don't know how new this video is, but the idea seems to be he's still in charge. here is our secretary of state antony blinken, on "meet the

press" sunday. >> think about it this way. 16 months ago russian forces were on the doorstep of kyiv in ukraine, believing they would take the capital in a matter of days and erase the country from the map as an independent country. now what we've seen is russia having to defend moscow, its capital, against mercenaries of its own making. so in and of itself, that's extraordinary. >> former u.s. ambassador in russia, michael mcfaul, is working at stanford now and we'll be on the "today" show telling us what he's hearing. his insight comes up at 7:00. a new nbc news poll of republican voters taken shortly after trump was indicted on federal charges show trump polling ahead of his competitors, most notably florida governor ron desantis. 22% support desantis, dropping from 31% last month. as one pundit put it, the more people get to know desantis, the less they like him. these are not all the candidates

for republican nomination, but they are the most popular. former president trump campaigned in michigan over the weekend, a state he lost in 2020. he spoke out against electric cars. >> electric cars will kill more than half of u.s. auto jobs and decimate the suppliers. they're being decimated already. it will decimate the suppliers and decimate your jobs and decimate, more than anybody else, the state of michigan. >> now, decimate might be right. it's entirely possible this trend will cause some job losses, maybe one in ten, or at least some job changes because electric cars use far fewer moving parts. you don't need a team working on a carburetor design or a tailpipe system if your car doesn't have one. president biden will announce, meanwhile, billions of dollars in grants for states as part of

a broadband internet push, part of the bipartisan infrastructure package, later this morning, and we'll have that on our 11:00 a.m. news. >> i'll be here for it. hope you join us then. drugmakers are really rushing to be the first to release an oral version of the popular weight loss drug ozempic. 2023 american diabetes association have been working on clinical trials to create a pill with the ingredient found in the diabetes drug, ozempic. researchers think a daily pill may be more appealing than the injectable version. it will not be on the market for a while. youtube is testing a new program for online games. "wall street journal" reports youtube's parent company google invited employees to start testing that product. it will be called playables. people will have access to youtube games on phones or computers. this marks youtube's efforts to move away from live streaming videos of people playing video

miles per hour. even for the inland areas, we're looking at wind speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, as we still get a push of cool air. high temperatures reaching into the low 70s for dublin and fremont, as well as mountain view. for the north bay, in the mid to upper 70s. tomorrow about the same, but then wednesday we're starting to feel some of our valley temperatures ticking up with morgan hill headed for 81 degrees, 82 in santa rosa, and we'll start to see an area of high pressure building across the region that's going to finally give us summer heat that we haven't felt that much over the past several weeks. the high pressure will ramp up the temperatures into the fourth of july holiday. if you've been looking to make some plans to head to the beach, take a look at half moon bay. we're going from 50s to upper 60s, while the inland valleys will reach into the 80s and 90s. it's going to be hot in the valleys while our coastal areas stay nice and mild.

mike, you have a view of the bay bridge toll plaza looking crowded. >> especially considering we have a light commute in most spots. here we have the backup. there was an earlier incident which caused a big backup on the span at 5:00 in the morning. they've slowed down the metering lights. we do see slowing down the eastshore freeway, also out of richmond. i think some folks might be doing that if we're going into the office, it's going to be today or tomorrow and trying to take extra time as we approach next week's fourth of july holiday. the south bay does show the build at 87, 101 and 280. >> it's interesting to see. happening now, animal shelters across the bay area continue to be over capacity and say they need to clear them before they sadly have to start euthanizing. the oakland animal services shelter currently has 73 kennels and 98 big dogs. if those dogs don't get adopted

6:57 on your monday morning. welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay." >> first, breaking news, the supreme court has ruled louisiana's congressional map must be redrawn to add a majority black district. the case could lead to a new map being drawn in louisiana in which black voters could have a chance to elect their preferred

representatives in two of the state's six congressional districts instead of one. now, the court order noted that the case should be resolved in lower courts. moving back home, kirker pass road near clayton is finally back open this morning. it was closed for several hours near hess road after a crash sparked a brush fire around 10:00 last night. you can see the car fully engulfed in flames. the fire growing to two alarms at one point, scorching at least 30 acres. we are still working to learn what led up to the crash and if anyone was hurt. police are clearing up a three-car crash in morgan hill that happened late last night around 9:00 at gallop drive and east dunne avenue. cal fire says nine people, ranging from kids to adults, were hurt. in this video you can see a helicopter had to land on the road to take one person to the hospital. at this point officers say two of those people are in critical condition. we do not know what caused the

crash. today lawmakers are set to proposal a bill meant to help fund bay area transit systems. the proposed bill would raise nearly a billion dollars by raising the toll on seven bay area bridges. the toll would raise prices to $8.50. state senators scott wiener and josh becker will introduce that bill this morning. time to get a check of our forecast before we go with meteorologist kari hall. >> yeah, starting out cloudy across much of the bay area. another cool day, also about the same tomorrow. but then we go through the week and temperatures go up several degrees every day and saturday temperatures peak at 90 degrees. not as much of a drastic change for san francisco. >> the bay bridge toll plaza is a little backed up. it's moving better now, but it is slow coming out of the maze. early slowing on the bay bridge led to more traffic.
