mutiny this weekend. pictured overseeing the ukraine operation. he also controls russia's nuclear arsenal. the row is mute and doesn't say when it was filmed. other images have not been widely broadcast here. russians cheering for the leader of this weekend's aborted rebellion, even taking selfies with yevgeny prigozhin. his insurrection bringing them to the brink of chaos, his mercenary troops closing in on the capital of moscow before an unprecedented deal with president putin brokered by the president of belarus. apparently allowing the man behind the insurrection to go unpunished and into exile. overnight russian tv commentators declaring a senseless massacre was avoided with maturity. beijing saying it supports russia maintaining national stability. while the u.s. and ukraine

"how can one in a situation where we are in conflict with another country have an internal war as well, this man says. vladimir putin's power challenged like never before. on saturday, the president called it a stab in the back. how will he and russia respond

now? so far there seems no change on the front lines. ukraine saying russia fired more missiles and drones overnight. nbc news learned that they were aware that prigozhin was planning a challenge to the russian military leadership, but as to what happens now, frankly, that's anyone's guess. >> absolutely. >> let's get more perspective from the former u.s. ambassador to russia. michael mcfall, nbc news analyst. mr. ambassador, my question is simple. what just happened? >> well, a set of extraordinary events, the greatest challenge to vladimir putin's rule since he took over in 2007. prigozhin, this private army fighting in ukraine suddenly decided that the leaders of the russian armed forces were not doing a good job, and he wanted to march to moscow to overthrow them to

support putin, not to overthrow putin. and along the way, he got cold feet and they did a deal. what happens next i agree, it's still too soon to know what the final implications of this -- this attempted coup, this attempted mutiny will be for vladimir putin. >> isn't there a mystery about this deal? here he's on his way marching towards moscow and suddenly says, it's fine. we'll deescalate. and now he's going to belarus, which is a russian satellite state. does it seem like there's more there there that we aren't privy to? >> oh, there certainly is. there is lots of rumors about the details. i'm not sure he will be allowed to retire in belarus. i can imagine a bunch of other scenarios for him.

but i think both sides blinked. that's important to understand, too. putin, after mr. prigozhin announced he was going to moscow, got on national tv and told all his citizens that this is a betrayal, a stab in the back. it sounded like it was going to be a major crushing of this mercenary group. but instead, he did not back -- did not escalate. he cut this deal to avoid bloodshed. both prigozhin and putin, i think, are the losers in this conflict and most certain putin today, 48 hours later, looks a lot weaker than he did just before. >> and this group, this wagner group, which is this brutal band of mercenaries who were fighting in ukraine and fairly effective, how does this now effect the war in ukraine? >> well, immediately i don't think very much. they had already pulled back, the wagner group. they were in ukraine, but they were no longer fighting. but in the long-term, think about it. if you are a soldier sitting in

the trenches of ukraine fighting not successfully and you are listening to all this fighting amongst the commanders, you are listening to prigozhin saying you were lied to to go fight this war, i have to believe the morale of those soldiers is not robust right now. i think this will be a much harder war for putin in ukraine. and, secondly, this is all from the war in ukraine. i think that's really important to understand. had putin not invaded ukraine, you wouldn't be having this war in russia. the longer it goes on, the more likelihood, you will have similar breakdowns like we had this weekend. >> thank you. appreciate your perspective. also this morning, communities across the country are recovering after a weekend of severe weather, including damaging tornadoes and

ship leaving port canaveral. luckily the cruise line says there were no serious injuries, and the ship set sail as scheduled. as this summer of severe weather shows no signs of slowing down. right now there are around 450,000 people without power throughout the country. in texas we aren't seeing any major outages here in texas. but the power grid operator here has issued a weather watch saying they are expecting record high demand this week. they are saying they do believe they will be able to handle that demand. but i will tell you already it is 82 degrees out here right now. so it is going to get very hot. i might need to take another pass through the water before things get going here. >> that splash park will get a lot of work today. thank you so much. we have al tracking the dangerous heat today and these dangerous storm threats. >> good morning to you. we are looking at severe weather developing. we have basically this stagnant system. low

pressure over the great lakes. so the heat wave will continue, but we have this severe threat that the most damaging situation happening right now. we're looking at showers and thunderstorms rotating through the great lakes. severe storms through the lower gulf, severe warnings, i should say severe thunderstorm warnings. tonight an advancing cold front will be advancing from upstate new york all the way to the carolinas. for tonight we have the enhanced risk of severe storms. we are looking at tornadoes, damaging hail, winds possible. tomorrow additional bands of storm will develop. that threat goes from new england all the way to the carolinas with this marginal risk. strong wind gusts, few tornadoes possible and some heavy rain by wednesday. we're talking about upwards of four inches of rain from pennsylvania all the way to new england. as you heard from priscilla, from the southwest to the panhandle of florida, 33 million people impacted by heat warnings, heat advisories. we will look at this in detail

submersible "titan." >> the board will first and primarily work to determine the cause of this marine casualty and the five associated deaths it can make recommendations to the proper authorities to pursue civil or criminal sanctions as necessary. >> reporter: authorities say they're reviewing data and voice recorders from the mother ship which chartered the sub to the launch point and conducting interviews with crew members research services who helped in the research effort sharing these images of its remotely operated service, calling the "titan" recovery mission remarkably difficult and risky now they are focussing on the carbon fiber hull. amid allegations tha its owner, who was among the five killed, apparently ignored repeated warnings about the vessel the company, which is closed indefinitely, says they have no additional information to share at this time. >> they didn't have any governmental bodies overseeing

and if anyone was hurt. the warm weather ahead, an increased risk of wildfires is happening. cal fire is suspending burn permits today in multiple north bay counties. burn permits will be suspended for both napa and solano counties starting today. and according to cal fire it's about decreasing wildfire risks. the agency says the high volume of dead grass in the area could fuel wildfire activity with hotter conditions which have expected toward the end of the week. the permits may be temporarily allowed for public health and safety reasons, such as land management or fire training. the agency is reminding people to take care of defensible space, clearing out at least 100 feet of defensible area around your home or building. similar restrictions will be put in place in sonoma county next monday. it's time to take a look at the weather from meteorologist

>> as to counts 2, 3, 4 and 5, murder in the first degree -- >> reporter: a legal battle over evidence playing out between bryan kohberger, working to clear his name in the murder of four university of idaho students, and the state, fighting to prove his guilt. in new court documents, bryan kohberger's attorneys accusing the state of trying to hide the kay by seeking information about the genetic genealogy investigation they say led to kohberger. >> the state is using a relatively new kind of dna technology this is exactly the kind of thing the defense will argue they need because if this is emerging technology, they need all the facts they can if they are going to challenge it. >> reporter: in a court filing earlier this month, prosecutors said that his dna is a statistical match. it was found on the knife sheath at the scene in the filing, his lawyer said two additional males' dna wa found within the house, as well as an unknown male's dna on a

glove found inside the house days after the murder, also writing that the police were investigating many suspects, adding that many of them provided dna and at least one had his dna taken from a discarded cigarette. the judge entered a not guilty plea for bryan kohberger after he opted to stay silent at his arraignment. he's accused of murdering the four students as they slept in an off campus home in moscow, idaho on march 13th an expansive gag order blanketed the case since january, challenged by the media and one of the victim's family's lawyers. the judge allowed attorneys in the case to comment on matters like scheduling and correcting misinformation about their clients. tomorrow both sides will face-off in court again as bryan kohberger's lawyers argue for the release of materials they say they need to defend the suspected killer bryan kohberger's lawyer also went even further in the court

now to a frightening incident in florida. an alligator attacked a 13-year-old boy in a local creek there. the teen had been swimming with his brother when the alligator latched on to his leg. it is one of several incredible close calls involving alligators sam brock with more in florida. good morning what's happening here? >> reporter: gabriel is a regular at hallow creek in winter springs, florida, and didn't think twice about grabbing a rope swing and jumping into the water on a sweltering summer day last tuesday. but that swim took a terrifying turn when a gator grabbed on to his leg and wouldn't let go. >> the gator just grabbed me from there and once he wrapped his jaws on me, i knew there was no getting out. >> reporter: gabriel says he fought back, repeatedly punching the alligator in the head. >> i just hit it with my hand and i just kind of like took a

big fist and i tried to hit it on its head. >> reporter: incredibly, the reptile let go and gabriel was able to swim back to shore the 13-year-old went to a nearby house where he calmly called his mom and then 911. >> i just got bit by a gator >> okay, what part of your body was bit? >> my right hip. i can talk and i can stand i'm fine. >> okay. i have the paramedics on the way. >> reporter: once at the hospital, he received stitches for the wound and a bandage from his hip to his upper thigh, even snapping this photo from his hospital bed while the teenager is home now, he's not completely out of the woods yet. >> we talked with infectious disease. they said about ten days until we're out of the woods because of how deep the wound was and the creek water. >> reporter: florida fish and wildlife trapped a large alligator a few days later they say they're fairly confident it is the same one that bit gabriel, but there is no way to be 100% sure meanwhile, further up the coast in south carolina.
