temperatures will warm up just a little more compared to yesterday, especially in the inland valleys with novato reaching 80 degrees and napa 79. still not too bad, 79 in martinez and fremont reaching 75 degrees, about the same in mountain view. tomorrow we'll see some of those numbers coming up, especially for our inland valleys and the south carolina, morgan hill hitting 90 degrees, 90 in concord, and mostly upper 80s for the inland east bay. mike, we heard about a fire in oakland. >> we located a crew just off the on-ramp. we saw the reflection in the building, the reflection is gone, the crew just cleared. good news, no major injuries and no major repercussions. bad news, i didn't have the thing i wanted to point out. 880 moves smoothly through this section. a minor crash as you're coming down westbound 80, no slowing.

i don't think there are any lanes blocked. we'll track that because it is an important route as people come off the carquinez bridge. a smooth flow around the berkeley curve. there's enough mist to build up from time to time and may be a factor on your windshield. historic reparations, it has been a headline topic in san francisco which has granted national interest for its list of recommendations, including cash payments for eligible black san franciscans. >> there was a report from the board of supervisors in the recent months, but does that mean anything? ginger conejero saab has more on where we are at this point. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. at this point, what does this mean, what does it mean for african american groups who have been pushing for this? symbolically, yes. does it have any teeth? not just yet. the board of supervisors has

voiced support for reparations and voted unanimously for a draft resolution in march but that was nonbinding. back in april, mayor breed voiced her opposition to creating an office of reparations for city hall which would be in charge of developing policy proposals and programming and investment criteria. now, just a couple weeks ago on june 9th, san francisco's budget and appropriations committee held a special meeting where they also did not support the $50 million price tag of creating a new office of reparations. supervisor walton who has been spear heading efforts, a amended his request but it did not get support. groups like san francisco african american reparations committee is making a push today at the city's budget hearing. that hearing, a very important one, takes place at 9:30. a final report will be submitted to the mayor and the board of supervisors and the human rights commission in a couple days. the deadline for that is on june

30th. we'll be watching that hearing at 9:30 and giving updates online at nbcbayarea.com. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> ginger, thank you. a developing story this morning, dozens of families forced out of their homes after an apartment fire leaves them with no place to stay. that fire started just after 5:00 at an apartment complex on east 14th street in san leandro. firefighters think it started in a unit on the third floor. now, they were quickly able to put it out, however firefighters still are looking into what caused the fire. all 52 units are red tagged, leaving more than 160 people without a place to sleep tonight. >> just a shirt, no shoes. it's bad, it's bad. it's very uncomfortable. i don't know how it started, but i know it started in her house and right next door to me. by god's grace and mercy, my house was spared. >> firefighters say they do not

fine and perfect. we did nothing wrong. this is a whole hoax. >> reporter: in the recording obtained by nbc news, trump is heard talking about what appears to be a sensitive military document, even acknowledging he did not declassify it when he was president. >> it is highly confidential, secret. this is secret information. >> reporter: the former president was indicted on 37 criminal counts related to his handling of classified documents. he claims the federal case has done more to help, not hurt his 2024 presidential bid. >> this wasn't in the playbook, but because the public is really smart, my numbers went up. >> reporter: a recent nbc news poll shows mr. trump remains the front-runner among republican candidates, some of whom are working to separate themselves from his policies and legal issues. >> president trump was almost singularly focused on our trade relationship with china. he was right about our trade

been waiting for more than five hours for baggage to arrive while others have been in the bay area since sunday night because of delays and cancellations. the weather problems started back east with thunderstorms, the faa also dealing with staffing shortages, especially at control towers. officials say 77% of airports across the country are understaffed. this comes as aaa is projecting the fourth of july holiday weekend could see more than 50 million people hitting the skies and roads. >> what people can expect on the roads, in the air or at the gas station, is a lot of company. we have never had a forecast like this one. it's an all-time record for us. >> before the peak of the travel season or this weekend, i should say, things are expected to improve, mainly because severe weather is expected to ease up. meteorologist kari hall joins us now. she's been tracking severe storms across the northeast. what's the system looking like this morning? >> we have a new system coming in and we are going to see more

showers and thunderstorms in different areas today. as we take a look at the national map and the high temperatures, it's also been extremely hot across the south and parts of the southwest, they're dealing with heat index values over 110 degrees. we're also seeing storms firing up and moving over toward spots like arkansas, as well as missouri, and then continuing to move off toward the east. so there may be some more travel issues today. as we go into the weekend, we're going to see changes in our weather and we're expecting some dangerous heat across the bay area. so we're issuing heat advisories for parts of the bay area, excessive heat watches for the central valley. and this weekend you want to make sure you're making plans to take it easy, reducing outdoor activities, drinking more water, as well as the increased risk of heat related illnesses will be coming in for the weekend. we're making sure that you're not leaving children in vehicles, as well as taking

next hour, hour and a half further up the peninsula coming up. good morning. happy wednesday to you. president biden will speak about the economy today, the ceo of fifth third bank, the nation's tenth largest bank, says it will no longer lend money for commercial real estate. we may see more banks do this. the ceo of microsoft will be in court defending his company's attempts to buy the video game company activision. the commerce department is considering new restrictions on chips sent to china, particularly chips from santa clara's nvidia. they're used for artificial intelligence. nvidia's stock may suffer this morning. canada is adjusting its immigration rules to quickly and seamlessly accept h1b visas from america. engineers, all kinds of smart people, if they lose their jobs

because of a layoff, their ability to stay in america vanishes. they have to pull their kids out of school, sell the house. it's a problem. it's a drain on the american economy. i've interviewed any number of immigrants who were here on h1b or student visas who created companies or contributed major scientific advancements who have to leave. canada did something similar during the global financial crisis of 2009. people were forced to leave america, but they could move to canada, so long as they could support themselves while they looked for new canadian jobs. speaking of jobs, there are layoffs to tell you about. the journal says robin hood will cut 7%. new relic and alumina have warned the state they'll head workers. a popular twitter account that tells you about conditions on the road to tahoe will go dark. twitter has cracked down on bots, automated accounts. laura, you tipped me off to this. >> i used that a lot.

the 27th. i'll come to work like -- [ laughter ] weather-wise out there, nothing scary about the weather. >> you know, it's been fair le cool across the bay area. today is another nice one and then we'll see temperatures heating up for the weekend. let's take a look live right now in walnut creek where we're starting out with clouds rolling by and eventually it's going to clear out, going to temperatures in the upper 50s at 8:00 and 64 degrees at 10:00. that's when the sky is all clear and we'll continue to see sunshine the rest of today. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. here is a look at our high temperatures, headed for 83 degrees in santa rosa and 71 today in hayward. so overall these temperatures are still pretty nice and we're feeling some comfortable air. but then tomorrow it does get a little bit more uncomfortable for the inland valleys, with concord reaching 90 degrees. also 90 in morgan hill.

san francisco is not going to see as much of a change, so we're still in the 60s here. as you make your way to spots like sonoma, napa valley, we're going to reach into the low 90s in time for the start of the weekend. you can probably tell at the bottom of the screen that saturday is going to be our hottest day and that's when high pressure is right over us. but it will continue to move on. the wind direction changes. by the fourth of july, our temperatures are already coming back down. take a look at fairfield and our temperatures that are going from low 80s to low 90s, to mid-90s on friday. then 99 degrees here on saturday, with some low 90s on sunday. look at the fourth of july. it's going to be only 82 degrees. so a lot of people as the temperatures heat up inland will be heading to the coastline. santa cruz is going to be so comfortable with low 70s and sunshine. great weekend for that as we enjoy this first full week of summer. we're also going to have a nice cooldown in time for the

one last day for the inland valleys to have some mild temperatures before that heat starts to crank up. so let's get a look at palo alto this morning, starting out cloudy, temperatures now in the mid-50s. as we go into today, we'll see it clearing out and still in the 60s at about lunchtime, headed for about 76 degrees for palo alto today. in san jose, it's headed for 77 degrees, so this is about what's normal for this time of year, maybe even slightly cooler in some spots, with concord reaching 82 and 79 in napa. we're going to talk about that weekend heat and that fourth of july forecast within view as well. mike, emeryville is where we've seen some droplets on the lens. >> off the eastshore freeway, we're looking at westbound. welcome, good morning. we're looking at this camera where sometimes the lens did build up with droplets. they ran the wipers so it's clean right now. just a note, as kari has been

talking about, things aren't completely without humidity. that's great, we don't like it too dry. we're looking toward highway 37, a little build. there's also traffic building. highway 4, typical patterns over here for a wednesday. we're looking at an early build and then things should lighten up a little later in the morning as we are in the summer months and approaching next week's holiday. coming out of the altamont pass, a smooth drive. vasco road, light slowing toward dalton. in the south bay, where it says san jose, that's the first slowdown for north 101, right around oakland road. back to you. >> thanks, mike. fourth of july less than a week away, and today a few cities across the bay area fireworks go on sale. >> they can be used in a handful of areas but officials are warning about the dangers. emma goss is live at one of the locations where they're selling fireworks this morning. it looks like they're still closed, but i guess they're ready for customers to come on

in. >> reporter: yeah, it is still closed, but soon enough. i'm at one of 15 fireworks booths in the city of dublin, in just a few hours they'll be selling safe fireworks. this is outside the safeway on dublin boulevard. they're run by different local licensed nonprofits. this one is run by the dublin high athletic boosters. in the city of dublin fireworks are only allowed to be used between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on july 4th at single-family residences and these four parks that you're seeing on your screen. other bay area cities allow safe and sane fireworks, union city, gilroy, san bruno, pacifica, and cloverdale. police will be stepping up enforcement against illegal fireworks and the penalty for anyone caught selling or using illegal fireworks could include

jail time and no fireworks of any type, even the ones that are safe and sane, are allowed at multi-family housing units, undesignated city parks, parks, businesses and schools. and these safe and sane fireworks booths will be open and selling fireworks up until noon on wednesday, july 5th. i'm emma goss. "today in the bay." police are searching for a motive and suspects after finding two men dead in a crashed car. police have not released much information. they were pound at 8:30 monday night off of lawyer street in vallejo. >> medical transported them to a local area hospital where they were pronounced deceased from their injuries. right now this is an ongoing investigation, and as i get more, we'll provide you more.

>> police have not released the victims' identities yet. this morning the santa rosa community is uniting to address an uptick in gang violence. this all follows two recent back-to-back shootings. police say on june 16th a 15-year-old was killed on corby avenue and most recently another 15-year-old dead this past weekend on blacksmith way. last night the santa rosa police department met with community members to address what's happening and shared some advice on how to stop kids from joining gangs. >> this isn't just a santa rosa issue, this is across the bay area and across california. but what is clear to me, we have to come together as a community and work toward solutions and it's going to start with education, it's going to start with intervention, with prevention, and also enforcement is a part of it as well. >> several arrests have been made in both cases. most of the suspects are teenagers, as young as 14. it's unclear if the two shootings are connected.

there is an urgent new warning from the cdc about malaria. the tropical disease transmitted by mosquito bites is spreading in the u.s. because of local cases for the first time in 20 years. there's four cases in florida, one in texas. while there's no evidence to suggest they're related, what they do have in common is there's no link to travel abroad. the last time malaria was transmitted locally in the united states was in 2003. all five patients are recovering, but the cdc is warning doctors to be on the lookout for symptoms as millions of americans prepare to spend their summer days outside. >> we need physicians to understand that they should have some suspicion for malaria and it's not difficult to diagnose and it's not difficult to treat. the people that die are people that do not get treated in time. >> the cdc is urging people to

limit mosquito bites by covering up, using repellant, and drain standing water which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitos. taking a live look at oakland, happening today, more money is going to bay area waters and wetlands. $52 million will be given to restore the waters and wetlands and the environmental protection agency, along with representative barbara lee and the east bay regional park district will talk more about it at the arrowhead marsh in oakland. the money will support project for the environment and underserved communities. this is the latest round of money from the san francisco bay area water quality improvement. taking a peek outside, sun is coming up over the bay area. enjoy today if you like the cooler temperatures. kari is keeping track of it all. we've got the warm-up on the way by the end, right? >> we know when we start out with clouds it's going to help keep those temperatures from warming up too quickly. so let's get a look out there in

morgan hill, where our temperatures start out at 55 degrees. cool morning. but then it does clear up by 9:00 to 10:00, and then we start to see temperatures ramping up. a perfect 70 degrees at lunchtime, so you might want to have that outside today. dinner outdoors, may be a little warm with highs reaching 82. we'll see some low 80s in concord, as well as santa rosa. not much of a change for san francisco, in the mid-60s today. then tomorrow we are looking at some slightly warmer temperatures and definitely hotter for the tri-valley, reaching into the upper 80s and up to 94 in fairfield tomorrow. so we'll get a look ahead at when those temperatures peak, how hot it will be in your microclimate in just a few minutes. mike, you're taking more of a minute look at the day ahead. >> that's right, because the day right now is looking predictable, just mild slowing for the first burst. lighter traffic expected this morning, probably after 6:00 things should ease up.

videos say he was shocked and turned his video over to italian police. >> i'm just flabbergasted. really, seriously? you're really doing this? he turns and gives me this smile that says, i have no shame at all. that was dumb founding as well. next thing i had to do, i found somebody to report him. >> more on the search to find the man in the video and the strict punishment awaiting him. 5:44 this morning. president biden will be in chicago today to talk up the economy. >> scott mcgrew joins us. the white house is calling it bidenomics. >> which was supposed to be an insult. the republicans came up with bidenomics as a way of criticizing the president, but we've heard the white house use the term several times yesterday talking about today's trip. indeed, we expect the president to use the term as well. that's because when you look at the raw numbers, the economy continues to steam along.

that recession we were promised has not shown up. more than 13 million jobs have been created during biden's term in office, though you have to take the pandemic into account. unemployment has remained low, wages are up. that message is not getting out, just 36% of americans think biden is doing a good job with the economy. a lot of that is probably inflation. at its worst point, prices were up more than 9% year-over-year. stimulus money put a lot of cash in the system. headline inflation is now around 3.6%. house speaker kevin mccarthy, meantime, redoubling his support for republican front-runner donald trump, a day after mccarthy seemed to waiver a bit in an interview with cnbc. >> could he win an election? >> yeah, he can. >> you think he can? >> the question is, is he the

strongest to win the election? i don't know that answer. but can anybody beat biden? yeah, anybody can beat biden. can biden beat other people? it's on any given day. >> mccarthy said trump would beat biden because trump is stronger, he said, today than he was in 2016. meantime, georgia's secretary of state brad raffensperger will be interviewed by federal investigators from special counsel jack smith's office. prosecutors are looking into donald trump's role in the january 6th attack. meantime, the state of georgia looking into trump's attempts to change the vote in georgia. there are audio recordings of that. a special criminal investigation also led by smith is looking into how trump handled government documents after he left government. those recorded on audio as well. here is nbc's lead justice reporter. >> reporter: pretty, i think, damning audio for him overall and it will be a major part of the prosecution's case going

by a passenger advocate organization. it ranked the list of worst airports based on the highest percentage of flight disruptions. harry reed international airport in las vegas took the top spot with about 34% of flights disrupted. sfo took the fifth spot with 27% of the flights delayed or canceled. denver international comes in third, while honolulu is at four. planning a summer vacation certainly is a big task and for some it's the least favorite part of taking a vacation. but artificial intelligence can help. >> google has a few ai tools to help you out. google's chatbot can create an itinerary for your trip, suggestions of what to do. another helpful tool is called search generative and this is an experience which uses ai to expand on a regular google search. >> let's say you've planned your itinerary and you're going for a

novato headed for 80 degrees and 71 in oakland. still pretty nice today. we're going to reach up to 80 in livermore. let's take it to tomorrow. the seven-day forecast comes up at the bottom of the screen. you'll see what to expect over the next few days as you make weekend plans. tomorrow we're still cool along the coastline with 60s. you head down the peninsula, it's in the mid-70s. across the bay, in the mid to upper 70s. then getting hotter for the inland east bay as well as the south bay, with upper 80s and even low 90s. then that jumps to upper 90s for concord on friday, 98 degrees, about the same in fairfield. santa rosa reaching 92 degrees. and we're still fairly mild near the coastline and in san francisco. so here is what to expect as we go into the weekend, dangerous heat ramping up. we will have a heat advisory most likely in effect starting on friday, continuing through monday, and much hotter temperatures across the central valley. as this high pressure moves in, the good thing is that it will
