crews in canada recover pieces of the doomed titanic submersible. what investigators will be looking for now. day in court, kevin spacey in court. how longng he could spend behin bars if he's convnvicted. > with extended daylight and loads of activities, how to make sure your kid's sleep doesn't take an investigation. we begin with that triple header of weather-related threats. 69 million people are under heat alerts today. from california all the way to florida. as the relentless heat wave expands. >> temperatures are also rising in the midwest, but the major concern there is actually air quality. canada is having its worst wildfire season on record and smoke from those fires is pushing south and east. according to researchers, chicago, detroit, and minneapolis are now among the top five of major global cities with the poorest air in the

world. separately, severe storms are contributing to the thousands of flights cancellations and delays just as aaa is expecting a new record high for july 4th weekend travel. >> we're covering all of these angles. let's begin at boston's logan international airport. it's not just the weather creating the problem, what's going on there? >> reporter: here in the northeast, it's largely weather, this has been rainy summer already but they've had this string of thunderstorms that has kind of cascading effect, to give you a picture of what that looks like here, we talked to a woman earlier today, who has been sleeping in logan airport for three days because she's been unable to get a flight back home to amsterdam. but then in other areas we're hearing from experts that there are issues with air traffic controllers, a lack of staffing is contributing to some of the

issues. rising concern now of course, but according to hopper, we're looking at starting tomorrow, through july 5th, you know unprecedented levels of holiday travel of course, it's july 4th, people are trying to get out, about 24 million americans are estimated to taking flights out to visit family and friends. this cascade can have an effect for days now. recommendations from experts if you're trying to travel to celebrate the 4th you need to get to the airport early or build in an extra day for travel, kate. >> let's head to chicago, shaq brewster is there for us. let's talk about the air quality index, it's very unhealthy levels. tell us what you're seeing and most importantly what should people in the midwest know as they're dealing with these conditions. >> reporter: essentially to stay inside, to avoid the smoke as much as possible. when you look at that overall index you see chicago's sitting at that very unhealthy level,

this is a condition that you're seeing for much of the midwest, so they're aud vising folks to stay inside. you can see it behind me and smell knit the air, people are talking about feeling the impacts of the smoke. one person earlier today. >> i woke up and i felt like -- it really affects it, a reason i can't go running when it's like this. >> reporter: you have some city workers now doing remote work, some employees -- some employers giving employees the option to work from home to avoid this. stay inside, let the smoke pass us until the air quality gets better. >> thanks, shaq. let's bring in meteorologist bill karins. what do we expect for the smoke and all of that, but also the heat, i know you're tracking that, too. >> we don't have to worry as much as storms, not as many

organized thunderstorms and tornadoes. the heat is a huge concern stretching from california all the way to florida. the heart of texas into the deep south, that's where we're seeing the expansion of the heat and that's where we're seeing some of the highest numbers. 111 in little rock. new orleans, 110. pensacola, 107. it's hot and it's humid on top of it. the temperatures as we go towards the holiday weekend, you know it's going to stay very warm, especially areas like memphis but we won't see the 100-degree temperatures, in the 90s with the humidity, heat index a little lower than today. a slight improvement. the air quality, chicago right now is in the red at unhealthy. it's much worse in madison right now, much worse in indianapolis, you saw what it looked like in chicago. it didn't look good. that unhealthy air has moved into erie, pennsylvania,

also hearing today new allegations against the son of the current president. an irs whistleblower said he was given prefen shl treatment in a federal tax evasion case. the trump audio tape, what else is he saying about that recording? >> reporter: well, former president trump saying that that audio was illegally leaked and it's essentially amounted to election interference and as you mentioned he said that when he was holding up those papers that it was, quote, bravado and that the papers he was holding up weren't actually classified. take a listen. >> lots of papers and mostly newspaper articles, copies of magazines, copies of different plans, copy of stories having to do with many, many subjects. what was said was fine.

>> reporter: in one of those interviews he said those plans he was discussing there also included plans for a golf course, of course former president has pleaded not guilty to 37 federal criminal counts related to his handling of classified documents. >> gabe, let's move over to hunter biden now and the story there. this irs whistleblower making some allegations about the investigation into hunter biden. >> reporter: this is supervisory irs agent who said that the justice department prosecutors hindered the investigation into hunter biden. he says that the investigation uncovered text messages between hunter biden and the ceo of chinese fund management company where hunter allegedly said in those text messages that he was sitting with his father and was demanding payment. take a listen to what that irs whistleblower told cbs news. >> this was any other person they'd likely would have served

we saw him arrive at the white house behind me shortly before 10:00 a.m. he remain stoic, looking straightforward. saying not guilty, to criminally negligent manslaughter. penny's legal team stopping by the group of reporters out here this morning, before just for a brief amount of time, arguing that they believe that jurors will see things the way they are, he acted in self-defense as we heard penny speak earlier in pre-recorded statements from his team. they said manhattan, the case playing out in this city could be to their advantage, because so many people presumably and some of the jurors have riden the subway before and

we're back with breaking news. more than a week after the titan submersible imploded killing all five onboard crews in canada have recovered pieces of the wreckage and brought them to shore. joining us is ron allen. ron, walk us through what we're seeing in these newly released photos and do we know how the crews actually able to recover this debris. >> reporter: a crew on the salvage ship out there, using an underwater robotic device which they were able to find this wreckage. now they're able to work out a system whereby a ship can hoist these pieces of this titan

submersible back up to shore and bring it back to port here in newfoundland. to understand why this submersible imploded in a catastrophic way it was described. they've been able to lift it from the bottom of the atlantic, some 12,000, 13,000 feet deep from the bottom, near the wreckage of the titanic, which is 2.5 miles down or so. large pieces of debris, but they're relatively tiny that environment. there they are. they're brought to shore for investigators to look and determine the cause of what this deadly implosion that took the lives of five people. >> ron do we know who's going to lead the investigation, because you have canadian authorities involved in the search, u.s. authorities involved in the search, who takes the helm here? >> the united states coast guard said it's going take the lead. this is happening. in international waters, the united states have the capacity

to do this. they've convened a marine board of investigation which will look at potential causes, whether there was misconduct criminal activity, any civil penalties. it was a devastating thing as you call, five people lost their lives. lot of criticism of the pilot, the ceo of the company, stockton rush of this company that launched the submersible, saying it shouldn't be on this kind of voyage, something of an experimental craft. they'll look at that as well as they try to piece this together. the national transportation safety board is now investigating a big scare this morning at the runway at the airport in charlotte, north carolina. a delta flight had to make an emergency landing without the front landing gear. you can see it there. luckily no one was hurt. nbc correspondent blayne alex

ander is following this for us. what do we know about what happened? >> reporter: those pictures are definitely something. so what happened here is it really had to do with the nose gear the landing gear in front of the plane. all of the landing gears is supposed to deploy but for whatever reason the landing gear up front didn't. the pilots has to land the aircraft using only the back two sets of landing gear. what's interesting planes are the designed to be able to do something like this. this is a scenario that pilots train for. a very harrowing experience for all of those passengers. >> we got maybe 30, 50 feet from the runway, the pilot sped up and took off again, he didn't want to land the first sign of,

♪♪ hi, everyone. this is "the fast forward." i'm janelle wang. a construction site in morgan hills suddenly went up in flames last night. it spurred evacuations of local homes. it's a major setback for construction workers at that site. emma goss has more. >> cal fire says they are investigating the cause of this pretty large fire. take a look at the charred wood framing burning the first and second stories at this townhome construction side. look at these photos of the flames cal fire tweeted this morning showing the structure on fire. you can see more of it on surveillance video from a home remodeling company across the street. this happened a little after midnight, according to cal fire. you can see the bright burst of flames and shortly after emergency vehicles responded. >> i'm in the business. you hate to see three or four weeks' worth of work shattered. we don't know what's going on.

stop kids from joining gangs. >> to be frank, this isn't just a santa rosa issue, it's across california. what i'm very clear to me is we have to come together as a community and work towards some of the solutions. it's going to start with education. it's going to start with intervention, prevention. also enforcement as a part as well. >> several arrests have been made in both cases. most of the suspects are teenagers with one as young as 14 years old. it's unclear if the two shootings are connected. here are other stories you nied to know about. investigators are looking into a huge apartment fire in san leandro. oak land received funding to restore local wetlands. firework guidelines before the 4th of july. fireworks go on sale in a few cities across the bay area. these are the safe and sane fireworks where buying and using them is legal. they are in dublin, union city,

gilroy, dixon and cloverdale. everywhere else is a no go. police are stepping up enforcement. the san francisco bay water quality improvement fund is putting forth funding to help local waterways. it gave $52 million. the goal is to restore wetlands. it will protect the environment and benefit underserved communities. a fire in san leandro forces dozens of people out of their homes. it started at an apartment complex. all 52 units red tagged. more than 160 are without a place to sleep. building inspectors are trying to clear some of the units so people can move back in. firefighters think the fire started in a unit on the third floor. the cause is still under investigation. it's getting warmer by the day in the bay area. kari hall has sunny predictions in our forecast. >> here is a look at our high temperatures for today. as we continue with some great weather across the bay area.

found dead in their home. johnson withdrew from a race scheduled for saturday. crews in arizona are working to contain a fast-moving brush fire, called the diamond fire, scottsdale police estimate it's burned around 35,000 acres of land. at this point no one has been hurt and no homes have been destroyed. the latest sexual assault trial against actor kevin spacey began today in london. spacey faces 12 charges there related to incidents against four men that allegedly occurred between 2001 and 2013. he's pleaded not guilty. nbc news foreign correspondent joins me now from london. what happened in court today? >> reporter: hi, kate. well, kevin spacey showed up about two hours before the

hearing was due to start and the case itself didn't start today, today was jury selection, so the two sides went through which members of the jury they wanted to select and interestingly, kate, there are 14 jury members in this, two of them are spared because the judge said in case there's a con political of interest with any of the other juror members during the koufrs the trial and they need to replaced and it can be done very quickly. kevin spacey was shown into the courtroom and then into the dock which is a glass room right if middle of the courtroom, where he stood alone with a court guard and he only stood up to give his name, full name, kevin space fowler. then he sat down. he was there until about lunchtime when the court adjourned and he left with his manager, got into a london black cab and off he went the case isn't expected to restart again until friday, because there's such a backlog of criminal cases in this country and the judge said the case is probably going

to last four weeks, maybe even longer, as long that's cessary. the charges against spacey range in severity, there's sexual assault, indecent assault, but theore serious charges are the ones of causing somebody to engage in sexual activity without their consent and causing somebody to engage sexual penetration without their consent, and that's the most serious of the charges that spacey is facing and if he's found guilty of that last charge he could face 19 years in prison. now he's adamant that he's innocent. but that decision is going to fall to the 12 jury members in this courthouse behind me. and that will happen any time in next four, five weeks. and there's a lot of media attention on this case. it was packed with reporters here in the morning while he got here and packed with reporters when he was leave it can courthouse.

>> yeah, one could imagine. thanks so much. kate, new details are emerging from the fallout in terms of the revolt that took place inside of russia, "the new york times" is reporting that a senior russian general actually knew about prigozhin's plans to rebel against russian military leadership. questions are growing over how much the mercenary group leader had. also the wall street journal reports that he had planned to capture russian military leaders but he was forced to change course when the country's domestic intelligence agency learned about the plot. nbc news hasn't confirmed that reporting. nbc news foreign correspondent raf sanchez joins us now. any sort of reaction in terms of ukrainian response to these two latest developments? >> reporter: we heard just a

little while ago from president zelenskyy said ukraine is closely following the arrival of prigozhin in neighboring belarus. he said ukraine at this point is not seeing any indication that prigozhin has brought a large mercenary force with him. but ukraine will take precautions to defend its boarder. we spoke earlier to the man responsible for some of those precautions, the governor of this region and i asked him about prigozhin's arrival next door. take a listen. >> what's your message to prigozhin or to any other russian leader if they're thinking about trying to invade here again? >> translator: we'll kill you here, we'll defend our land, every meter of our land and the consequences for all russians who come to this region will be horrible. >> reporter: now, pretty harsh language there but there are

very bitter memories in this region of the russian occupation in the early weeks of the war, the governor told us some 700 of his civilians were murdered or tortured by the russians while they were if charge here and he said russian forces planted thousands of landmines which they'll be clearing up for years to come. >> also a couple of missile strikes that happened in ukraine in the last 24 hours or so, what can you tell us about those strikes? >> reporter: yeah, so at least 14 civilians killed in the last 24 hours, 11 of them in what you're seeing on your screen there, that's a strike in the city in the east, a russian missile hitting a pizza restaurant. 11 people killed there, among the dead there twine 14-year-old sisters, anna and julia, they were at that restaurant with their families, another three civilians were killed in the northeastern province of kharkiv
