expected to release its ruling on student loan forgiveness. tens of millions of americans are awaiting the key decision. we're tracking the latest on the issues for president biden. and you won't be able to escape. the bay area is heating up. meteorologist kari hall is tracking where triple digits will hit this weekend. this is "today in the bay." and good morning to you on this friday. a hot one, indeed. >> i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. >> as we mentioned, triple digits are on the way. we've got team coverage tracking that heat. let's start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been really tracking all week what we can expect. >> yeah, we've been talking about it a lot and we are going to see temperatures starting to ramp up today. it's at least nice and cool now, as you get ready to head out the door. temperatures in the low 50s in san francisco, it's 61 in dublin and 57 in fremont. and then as we go into today,

we're already seeing clear skies in san jose, a different pictures compared to this time yesterday morning. we're at 58 degrees, but we are going to see temperatures warming up quickly as we go toward late morning into the afternoon. we'll be in the upper 70s at noon and headed for the low 90s today. while we have highs over 100 degrees in some spots, the coastal areas in san francisco will be in the 60s and 70s for today, as well as the next several days. that's where you can go to get away from that inland heat. i think it's going to be a popular destination this weekend with people trying to get away from those really hot temperatures. now we head over to bob redell out there live. and you've been tracking what people can expect and maybe some ways to beat the heat. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, kari. we're here in livermore where there's a heat advisory in effect for livermore and much of the bay area. if you go further east in the central valley, that's where you have the excessive heat watch as

well. as you can see behind me, the temperatures right now, a balmy 63 degrees. it is 5:00 in the morning and we already see these kinds of temps. we expect this temperature sign to be reading in the high 90s later today, 100 tomorrow in livermore. this is a 20 to 30 degree jump from earlier this week. it's definitely a noticeable change. that means there's an increased risk of wildfire. we know here in the east bay firefighters are fighting a five to ten acre wildfire and this is video of a brush fire overnight in san jose. this is on fuller avenue not far from 280 and 87. the fire department put it out before it spread to any homes. not clear what caused it but the chief has this warning and reminder as we head into the fourth of july holiday. >> the city of san jose, people shouldn't be lighting them off. there is a code to report fireworks on the city website,

of a workplace dispute over a broken piece of work equipment. in a court hearing in february, zhao waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing. it happened at california terra garden and concord farms. earlier this week cal osha issued fines for both farms for health and safety violations. this morning two san rafael police officers are facing misconduct charges. they're accused of unlawful assault and making false statements. the district attorney's office saying that after going through evidence, which included body cam video, eyewitness accounts, medical records and a record from the san rafael police department, it concluded there is sufficient evidence to prove the charges. we do want to warn you the body cam footage is difficult to watch. here you can see that arrest, july 27th of last year, the court documents there say that the victim julio jimenez was accused of having an open beer container. you can see him standing up

saying something to the officers and that's when brandon nail and former officer daisy mazariegos take him down and beat him. today the supreme court is expected to release rulings on cases, one for student loan forgiveness. that decision will likely come today. president biden announced the plan last year to forgive up to $20,000 in loans for about 37 million americans. the plan quickly faced several legal challenges. two of those lawsuits made their way to the supreme court. another major case, whether businesses can refuse certain services for lgbtq customers. it revolves around a colorado website designer who refused to design wedding websites for same-sex couples. we're tracking both cases and will have a live report coming up in our next half hour. yosemite park rangers are warning visitors about coming to the park, very popular summer

spot. right now traffic is so bad, people have been waiting almost five hours just to get in the park. long waits this year because rangers stopped requiring people to reserve a spot to get inside. intense snow is causing a lot of damage in the park, forcing some of it to close. park rangers suggest people take yosemite area regional transportation system instead of driving, to avoid that traffic. and taking a live look this morning at the golden gate bridge, this is where, beginning tomorrow, tolls are increasing. fas trak account holders will see rates increase 35 cents from $8.40 to $8.75. while other drivers will have to pay $9. golden gate bridge district says that the latest toll increase will bring in an estimated $100 million over the next five years. new video of a house fire in santa rosa, that started just after 8:00 yesterday on sullivan

court. flames started near a carport and spread to the back of the house and into the attic. firefighters got the fire under control in under 40 minutes. one of the homeowners had to be taken to the hospital for minor burns. firefighters say hot ashes in a trash can near the house caused that fire. with all of this hot weather, firefighters are worried about more fires sparking across the bay area, this as temperatures are going to get to some high levels we haven't seen in quite some time. >> all of the fires we have this time of year, manmade, man caused and you have to be careful as temperatures heat up. it's taxing on firefighters to have to battle flames when it's 100 degrees outside. >> with all that gear. >> absolutely. we're going to have temperatures really starting to ramp up today. we're taking a look at napa where we're headed for 97 degrees today and peaking at 102 degrees tomorrow. so really hot weather leading into the fourth of july holiday weekend, but in time for the

fourth we are going to see numbers coming back down, looking at milder temperatures by tuesday. area-wide, we have excessive heat warnings and heat advisories that start at 11:00 today and continue until 11:00 on sunday and some temperatures will reach over 100 degrees for areas away from the coastline and the inner bay. take a look at our highs this afternoon with concord reaching 100 degrees, we'll see a high of 94 in dublin and san jose reaching 91 degrees, morgan hill 100, while san francisco is going to be the place where you can go and escape the heat, in the low 70s and upper 60s in half moon bay. mike, you have fog and a closure to affect the north bay. >> that's right. the closure is not because of the fog but the fog is here. chp calls it out for the golden gate bridge, it's a little heavier than they sometimes see. the reason for the closure is not because of the fog. it's not because of construction, either. it is the parking lot, we warned you yesterday, they're going to

microclimates and where it will be hottest coming up in a few minutes. the temps near lunchtime, there may be more traffic on 92 closer to the midday. folks might head west. we're looking at a drive right now that's just fine. east bay, something is going on. i'll check out what's going on for the tri-valley approach. i've got a look at futures, in the green this morning. might be a really nice way to wrap up this month, quarter and first half of the year, as we await key inflation data. it's been a really good june for the market so far, the s&p is on pace for its best month since january. the nasdaq is headed in for its fourth straight positive month and the dow is on track for its best month since november. the nasdaq is set for its first best half of a year since 1983. new this morning, a crackdown on youtube. the streaming service is now

testing disabling videos for people using ad blockers. the company has confirmed that move to the website the verge, the company is using users to try youtube premium which is ad free. recently users saw a warning prompt. you'll be paying more for nikes soon. the company is planning more price hikes over the next year, this despite nike in stores offering discounts to boost sales and reduce inventory. nike says it's spending more on labor and shipping and sharing those costs with customers. so no matter how you look at it, 100 years is a long time, and a centennial celebration is happening in the bay area this weekend. the winchester mystery house celebrates 100 years of giving tours. >> the celebration is kicking off in just a few hours. joining us live to talk about it all is the general manager, walter magnussen. thank you so much for waking up

straight hours, which is a very big number around here, and we have a lot of special events this weekend culminating in a special brunch themed 1923 on sunday. >> 100 years later, it is such an icon in san jose. i know i love scary movies, but the interest is worldwide for the house this. so despite the change of the landscape, the city, the house is still standing. talk to us about what do you think makes this such an attraction for so many people for so many years? >> oh, my gosh. well, this has been a fascination for people, even in sarah winchester's time. i think there are so many questions that are still unanswered as to why she built this incredible mansion and what some of the features really mean and i think that resonates. it inspires people from around the world and we're more popular now than we've ever been. >> it's beautiful how it's kept up over all the years, very close to santana row, and you do

[ laughter ] we're going to leave the clothes on for now because it's still nice and cool. yeah, later on today we'll see what happens. let's get a live look outside in san francisco, where the fog still lingers this morning. low visibility and this is where temperatures will stay cool for today. we're starting out at 54 degrees, partly to mostly cloudy, and gradually we'll see a little more sunshine. take a look at that trend, staying in the 60s throughout today. if you're in an inland area like brentwood, head to the park early. get in the walk, the outdoor activities. make sure the kids have their time outside before noon,

because already at noon it's at 91 degrees, and those slides will be too hot for the kids to go down at 102 degrees today at 4:00 and 5:00 as well. it's going to be slow cooling down. here are things you should watch out for as these temperatures heat up inland over the weekend. you want to look out for signs for heat exhaustion or heat stroke, and it is important to know which one it is. with heat exhaustion, you feel dizzy, you're thirsty, you have heavy sweating and a rapid heart rate. more severe is heat stroke where there's confusion, you stop sweating, you have red, hot, dry skin, as well as a rapid, strong pulse, and also loss of consciousness. so this is definitely when you need to get to the emergency room. you do still have a little bit of time to turn things around if it's heat exhaustion. so watching out for that for everyone around us, as well as ourselves, as our temperatures heat up to 95 today in martinez.

in fremont it will be in the upper 80s, 100 in morgan hills. tomorrow is the peak of the heat. we could see it as hot as 103 in fairfield, while san francisco, half moon bay is in the low 70s. we'll see low 70s on sunday. we're starting to see some of those numbers coming down just a bit by sunday. take a look at concord and our ten-day temperature trend, temperatures reaching into the upper 90s today, 102 tomorrow and then a significant cooldown by next weekend. it will be nothing like we'll see this weekend. mike, it seems like a calm drive out there. >> it's pretty calm out here. we're looking toward the traffic, light commute expected. friday before a holiday weekend, folks are stretching it out until tuesday next week. overnight work northbound 680, blips here and there. last night they had one lane open. i believe it's the same situation right now. crews will be on the move.

morning for all of these areas shaded in orange. so it's not the entire bay area, but it is away from the coastline, as well as the inner bay. our interior valleys are going to have heat ramping up. take a look at these numbers reaching 90 in napa, martinez hitting 95 degrees. we'll start to see a few locations hitting 100 degrees like concord and morgan hill. but tomorrow is the peak of the heat and we could see other cities reaching over 100 degrees, like fairfield reaching 103, mostly mid to upper 90s. we're still in the 70s across some of the coastal areas and in san francisco. we've been talking a lot about airport delays, and so far things look pretty good. i know you have more on the travel chaos. that's right. travelers certainly have been feeling it this week, and likely today, those delays and cancellations affecting thousands of flights. some people are left with little to no options and they've been stranded at the airport. >> all of this the lead-up to

the fourth of july travel which is expected to bring over 155,000 passengers to sfo alone today. ginger conejero saab is live at sfo with a look at how things are faring this morning. any signs of improvement, ginger? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. things are looking promising, here at terminal 3 it's a bit quieter still. you can see the wait times for tsa under ten minutes there, looking good. but moments ago we just spoke to a passenger who said this is day three of their travel experience here, day three of delays and cancellations. they're flying to tokyo. fingers crossed they head out today. it's been a struggle for united airlines in the past days dealing with flight delays and cancellations. yesterday they canceled 14% of flights, making big impacts to passengers, like this passenger who had been stuck since wednesday.

he was supposed to land in minnesota for his niece's 15th birthday but his connecting flight was canceled. united only had a flight for sunday, forcing him to buy another ticket from another airline. the price tag was $724. his story is just one of many here at the airport, which may get worse today. tsa says it expects to screen more than 2.8 million travelers today. that's the most since thanksgiving of 2019. now, here at sfo, 150,000 passengers are expected to pass through, today the busiest day of the holiday weekend. >> we think that this fourth of july travel weekend will take us closer than ever before to pre-pandemic levels. we expect that by this fourth of july holiday we'll be at about 90% of what we saw back in 2019. so this is really great to see. it means that we're back almost to full strength in terms of the

level of activity, but with that comes the need for preparation. >> reporter: passengers could not have prepared for these delays and cancellations these past few days. this morning, according to flight view, there's still a slight delay in arrivals, something passengers and airport officials hope will not tricking down into the busier times of the day. now, aaa projects over 4 million americans will be flying to their destinations over the holiday weekend, over 43 million people total will be taking the road, dodging these airport delays. and if you are hitting the road, there are some better times to do that. the worst times to travel, we're told by aaa, is today from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which is a pretty big gap, tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. is not looking great. if you're coming back from the holiday, try to avoid july 4th from noon to 3:00 or in the afternoon on wednesday, july 5th. but speaking of hitting the

roads, i know, mike, you're taking a closer look at gas prices. we're trying to prepare folks for the road. $4.06, vallejo's best, at costco. in the south bay, cupertino with $4.15 at the cupertino car wash on north boulevard. there are two choices in hayward, they both have a price of $4.15. we know that because you've reported through gasbuddy.com. we have a lighter commute and in the middle of the day, the worst time to leave as far as volume goes, keep that in mind. prepare yourself. no major delays. just a little build in the north bay. highway 37. i'll talk more about the north bay and a closure coming up. happening today, san francisco leaders will host a virtual town hall to discuss a

recent deadly police shooting. that shooting happened last thursday in the richmond district. this is when officers arrived at a home where they found an 84-year-old man hurt. while helping that victim, the suspect attempted to stab officers. officers then fired their weapons, killing that man with a knife. during that investigation officers found a 76-year-old woman in that home dead, along with her dog. police have not confirmed the connection between the people at that home, but neighbors say they were a family. the town hall begins at 3:00 this afternoon. happening today, an oakland mother accused of killing her 10-year-old daughter will face a judge. rosa suarez is facing homicide charges after allegedly stabbing her daughter to death. officers say the girl who died lived with her mother and her mother's boyfriend at the time. police had responded to calls for help in the past. her court hearing is scheduled for 9:00 this morning. 5:37, and moving you

forward, a new vaccine for rsv will be ready for older americans this fall. the cdc signed off on rsv vaccine approval last month by the fda. the cdc says people 16 and older can get this new rsv vaccine first, but should talk to doctors. people are chronic heart or lung disease, weakened immune system and living with long-term care facilities are at higher risk for rsv. the marin county fair opens today. this year's theme is electrifying. it's supposed to represent marin county's drive to be a clean and green fair. doors open at 11:00 at the fairgrounds. every night the fair has concerts and fireworks. there are 31 different carnival rides. most with free admission. the fair is cashless, so people have to buy tickets online. today is opening day. it's free for kids 12 and under and seniors over 65. opening day is said to be the

director's favorite part of the fair. >> literally thousands of kids lined up waiting to get in, and they are just so excited, their energy is palpable, and i do a countdown with them. it's really a moment that just gives me goosebumps and makes me realize how important what we're doing is, actually. >> the fair ends on july 4th. tickets are still on sale for about 25 bucks, so get your corn dogs. meteorologist kari hall joins us. it's going to be a hot one. >> for marin county, it's a little bit cooler in that spot compared to some of the other fairs going on right now. let's get a look at the forecast, and especially in time for the fireworks, it cools down nicely for the evening. as things open at 11:00, it will be in the low 70s at noon and

we're headed for 80 degrees. so definitely much more comfortable. bring the sunscreen and enjoy that time there. if you're going to the alameda county fair in pleasanton, this is where it's going to be a lot hotter during the middle of the day. we're hitting 95 degrees out there, and you want to make sure if you are there at that time, you want to make sure you stay hydrated and drink lots of water. tomorrow we have the stars and strides run early in the day before temperatures heat up. at the time the race begins, it will be about 68 degrees, headed for the mid-70s by late morning. at 10:00 it's 80 degrees and temperatures do continue to heat up. so you want to be one of the first to cross the finish line. we also have mild weather in san francisco. this may be something you'll check out, the jazz festival happening for the first time since before the pandemic, and it's going to be temperatures in the low 70s during the middle of the day with sunshine, really great event to check out, with

the milder temperatures. you may wrap it up on monday with fireworks at oracle park. also great weather for that event. mike, you have one closure in the north bay. >> we knew about this, warned you about it yesterday. the lower parking lot off highway 101 where it meets with highway 1 in the area, sausalito, biggest landmark in the area, we're going to talk about tides possibly causing flooding in the parking lot. they closed it for the next week while tides are higher in the area. right now it's not a problem, just for folks who are doing the park and ride, the drive across the bay bridge, you have a little slowdown on the span. >> thanks, mike. new developments in the defamation case between former president trump and e. jean carroll. the reason the judge says the lawsuit can move forward. the deadline is ticking for the supreme court to rule on several major cases. we're live in washington, d.c.

ramping up quickly, with lots of sunshine today. really hot this afternoon. we'll get a look at what to expect for the weekend in a few minutes. right now low clouds right here in oakland and low volume of traffic. not a problem. this is right by the coliseum where the a's will play again tonight at 6:40. keep that in mind if you see slowing past the coliseum. we'll show you the heading to work traffic coming up. >> thanks so much. . a federal judge will not dismiss e. jean carroll's defamation lawsuit against former president donald trump. trump has asked the judge to drop the lawsuit, but the judge decided that trump's arguments for dismissing the lawsuit are without merit. the ruling follows a series of recent twists in the years-long battle between trump and carroll. carroll filed the first defamation suit against trump in 2019 and filed a second civil suit against him in 2022. the case is set to go to trial in january. let's take a look out at our

nation's capital this morning. this is where we are expecting the supreme court to wrap up its final day of rulings. the docket has a number of key cases, including that student loan forgiveness one. this is a major case and they're looking at whether businesses can refuse services for lgbtq customers. this comes a day after justices issued a 6-3 decision banning the use of race conscious admission programs at schools and universities. brie jackson is joining us with the intense fallout over thursday's ruling. i know president biden strongly disagreeing with that ruling. >> reporter: yeah, and president biden did have some harsh words about yesterday's ruling regarding affirmative action, meanwhile his political opponents, they praised it. mixed reaction to the supreme court's ban on affirmative action when admitting students at colleges and universities. >> today is a great victory for asian and all americans.

cup in santa clara. for sure, it will be a soccer-filled weekend in the bay area. back to you, marcus and laura. >> it's also going to be hot. we keep talking about the heat, kari. >> it's going to be hot and you have to make sure you're paying attention to signs of heat exhaustion. we're also monitoring air quality that may be an issue for people sensitive to a high amount of ozone or particulate matter, especially in the east bay where we'll see the worst of the air quality. santa clara valley also dealing with moderate air quality as temperatures go up. also limiting your time outside during those hottest hours of the day. think about your pets as you go out for a walk. if the air temperature is 87 degrees, the asphalt in direct sunlight could be as hot as 143 degrees. so do not take those pets out as temperatures heat up. and also making sure you're not leaving any children or pets inside vehicles.

we are going to see air temperatures heating up quickly today. dublin reaching 94 degrees, 95 in martinez, and 91 in novato today, while san francisco will see temperatures in the 70s today for today and tomorrow. but tomorrow is the peak of the heat with some valleys reaching over 100 degrees, morgan hill hitting 101, and 82 in oakland. even those temperatures are warm without air-conditioning. we'll start to see some relief near the coast and inner bay while the valleys will still be hot on sunday. as we take a look at our seven-day forecast, temperatures will be coming back down just as fast as they went up, in time for the fourth of july we're mainly looking at highs in the low to mid-80s and then mid-80s the end of next week. we won't see the heat all across the bay area, san francisco stays mild and those temperatures come back to what's normal for this time of year by next week. mike says so far the commute is pretty smooth. >> typical for a friday, which
