good morning to you on this friday. thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. as we mentioned, triple digits are on the way. we've got team coverage tracking the heat. we're going to start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all week what we can expect so we can plan. >> yes, and the heat advisory begins at 11:00 this morning and continues through sunday evening. it's for all of these areas shaded in orange that are away from the coastline and the inner bay. a lot of our valleys are going to be feeling the hottest of those temperatures across the bay area. take a look at walnut creek, so you can plan your day and when you should avoid being outside during those hottest hours. we're right now in the 50s and 60s. at 10:00 it's 75, still mild. but getting warm at noon and headed for the 90s today as the sunshine continues. some of our hottest temperatures will be in concord and morgan hill reaching the triple digits today, and even hotter for

tomorrow in some spots in the inland valleys, with fairfield reaching 103 degrees. san jose will reach 95 degrees and we'll see upper 70s for san mateo. but we are still keeping the mild weather along the coastline, as well as a lot of parts of san francisco where temperatures will be cooler. so now we head to "today in the bay"'s bob redell in livermore with ways that we can deal with this extreme heat. >> reporter: good morning to you. in livermore, another hot area expected today through the weekend. national weather service has issued a heat advisory for this part of the bay area and for most of the bay area, for that matter. you can see the temperature sign right now, 61 degrees. doesn't sound like much, but it is 6:00 in the morning. so you get a sense we're going to be approaching a lot hotter temps later in the day, the high 90s today in livermore, 100 degrees tomorrow. not quite as hot as fairfield, 103, but at that point who cares?

the difference between 100 and 103, it's just going to be really hot. you compare this to earlier in the week, that's a 20 to 30 degree difference. this means there's an increased risk of wildfire. this is video of a brush fire overnight in san jose on fuller avenue, not far from 280 and 87. the fire department was able to put it out before it spread to any homes. not clear what caused this fire, but the battalion chief has this warning and reminder as we head into the fourth of july holiday. >> fireworks are illegal in the city of san jose, people shouldn't be lighting them off. there is a code to report fireworks on the city website and that's available for people to use during the fourth of july fireworks. >> reporter: with this heat advisory in effect for most of the bay area, a reminder to stay hydrated when you're outside, wear sunscreen. if you don't have air-conditioning and your house is going to be too hot, there

are a number of cooling centers that will be opening up, a place where you can go in and get air-conditioning. go to our website, nbcbayarea.com, get a list of those cooling centers and hopefully you can find one near where you live. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you so much. as you mentioned, our website is a great idea. another resource is our nbc bay area app. we have an entire section focused on weather and you can get a personalized forecast for your neighborhood. you can download the app for free. today the supreme court is expected to release rulings on some key cases, a key issue is the supreme court student loan forgiveness. that decision will likely come today. president biden announced a plan last year to forgive up to $20,000 in loans for about 37 million americans. that plan quickly faced several legal challenges, two of those lawsuits made their way to the supreme court. another major case, whether businesses can refuse certain services for lgbtq customers.

it revolves around a colorado website designer who refused to design wedding websites for same-sex couples. we're tracking those cases and we'll have a live report from washington coming up for you in the next half hour. happening today, the man charged in the half moon bay mass shooting will return to court. zhao was accused of shooting and killing seven people back in january. the san mateo county da says it started because of a workplace dispute over a broken piece of work equipment. in a court hearing in february, zhao waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing. the shooting happened at california terra garden and concord farms earlier -- in january, but earlier this week cal osha issued fines for both farms. this morning two san rafael police officers are facing misconduct charges, accused of unlawful assault and making false statements. the district attorney's office says after going through

evidence which included body cam video, eyewitness accounts, as well as medical records and reports from the san rafael police department, it concluded there is sufficient evidence to prove the charges. we need to warn you the body cam footage is difficult to watch. here is a look at that arrest that happened on july 27th of last year. court documents say the victim, julio jimenez lopez, was accused of having an open beer container. lopez was standing while saying something to the officers, and that's when officer brandon nail and now former officer daisy mazariegos allegedly tag him down and beat him. both officers are scheduled to appear in court on august 11th. let's take a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning where, beginning tomorrow, those tolls will increase. fas trak account holders will see rates increase 35 cents, from $8.40 to $8.75, while other drivers are going to have to pay

$9. the golden gate bridge district says the increase will bring an estimated $100 million in over the next five years. new video of a house fire in santa rosa that started just after 8:00 yesterday on sullivan court. the flames started near the carport and spread to the back of the house, as well as into the attic. firefighters got that fire under control in under 40 minutes. one of the homeowners had to be taken to the hospital for minor burns. firefighters say hot ashes in the trash can near the house caused that fire. 6:06 right now. taking a live look across the bay area this morning. it's noise now, but the intense heat is expected to move in later today. get that exercising in early. meteorologist kari hall is tracking our microclimate weather alert. >> we are going to have a heat advisory beginning at 11:00 this morning, and it's going to be something that we haven't yet had a chance to get used to. so it's really going to feel hot and you want to make sure you're staying hydrated, as los gatos

hits 96 degrees today, san martin reaching 98 and concord, one of the hotter temperatures we'll see, up to 100 degrees today. 82 in oakland and 73 in san francisco. so you can see the temperatures will be wide ranging depending on where you are, and a short drive can really change those temperatures drastically. i do think a lot of people are going to be going to the coastline this weekend because there we're looking at 70s in the forecast, while fairfield hits 103 degrees, we'll see a high of 101 in morgan hill tomorrow and novato reaching 93 degrees. it's still going to be pretty hot on sunday, but we're getting relief early next week. i'll be tracking that as you make fourth of july plans. that's coming up. do we have slowing in the try valley? >> there's the reveal, northbound 680, slowing north of bernal heading toward the dublin interchange. overnight we were down to one lane. they should be clearing crews. we did see the traditional

slowing. i think they have to give the all clear for this section. closer to the interchange, that may be where the traffic breaks. southbound is just fine but they may close one more lane today. typical construction out of san ramon. we're looking out of the altamont, 580 westbound does show slowing. there's a disabled vehicle as you approach north 1st. even the distraction is enough to slow things down just a bit. lighter flow of traffic around the bay as you would expect for a friday and a friday before vacation. a lot of folks have sometimes monday and tuesday off next week. the backup is not really showing at the toll plaza, even though the metering lights are on. the backup is forming very slowly and that's an indication of lighter traffic. >> that's good to see. thanks, mike. 6:09 right now. when it comes to rising costs for nike, the company is saying just do it. coming up next, the reason you'll be paying for more shoes and clothing. one of the south bay's most famous attractions is celebrating a milestone.

it's been a really good june for the markets. the s&p is on pace for its best month since january. the nasdaq is headed for its fourth straight positive month and the dow was on track for its best month since november. the nasdaq is also set for its best first half of a year since 1983, up nearly 30%. i first found out about this clothing company online. you may have heard about shein, the chinese online store. it's denying reports that it's filed for a u.s. ipo. reuters reported the listing could happen by the end of this year. founded in 2012, shein is recently valued at more than $60 billion. it's also been accused by lawmakers of exploiting trade loopholes to import goods to the u.s. and avoid tariffs. new this morning, you'll be paying more for nike soon. the company is planning for price hikes over the next year, this despite nike and stores offering discounts to boost

sales and reduce inventory. nike says it's spending more on labor and shipping, so it's passing on those costs to consumers. it's time to talk about a centennial celebration. this weekend is winchester mystery house celebrates 100 years as a tourist attraction in san jose. >> and the big celebration is kicking off in just a few hours. joining us live to talk about it all is winchester mystery house executive director, walter magnussen. thank you for waking up early to talk to us about this. it's a fascinating place, opened its doors in 1923. it has welcomed guests from around the world to experience its para normal mysteries. what are the big plans for this milestone, walter? >> yes, june 30th, 1923, you said it, that's when we opened our doors. this is a little different for us, the centennial celebration, because with this celebration we're really putting a spotlight a little more on us as an attraction, and less on sarah

winchester, which is obviously the story we tell. this is a brand new exhibit which opened yesterday, and it actually details our history and our story going back to our founders, john and mamie brown. this house would not be here if not for them and they were truly our first caretakers, and it was their vision and their passion that got this place open to guests 100 years ago today. >> when you think about it, 100 years is a long time. some companies can't stay open five years but you've been able to do it with tourists. i want you to talk about that because it's a worldwide attraction. and despite changes of landscape and things we've seen throughout the city change, that house is still standing and growing as you have the new exhibit. what do you think it is that makes it so alluring to so many people? >> i think it has fascinated people from sarah winchester's

time. silicon valley builds up around us, we have buildings going up and santana row, yet this place still resonates. it's an incredible story. we know some of the reasons why she did what she did, but there's still a lot of mystery and people come from all around the world and leave inspired. >> that's great vision, as you mentioned. the browns, do they own the house? because it's interesting to think of a tourist attraction back in 1923. >> yes, well, john brown actually was an amazing pioneer in the amusement industry. he designed roller coasters. and the vision for this area was going to be winchester park where there was going to be a roller coaster, a pool, a bandstand, and the house was sort of a supporting act. but quickly the house bumped right up to headliner. >> it looks like stepping back in time. it's great. >> i don't know what the permits look like in that area, but a roller coaster, i think i would

knew. >> definitely. let's get a look at the forecast. we keep talking about the heat. >> it's all about kari. >> and taking care of the kids in this heat. we're going to have temperatures ramping up. staying hydrated, all of that stuff. it's already clear in san jose and all this week at this time, we were still seeing clouds. that is not the case. those temperatures will be heading up very quickly. now, we don't have much visibility here at the golden gate bridge in san francisco, but also showing another level of how our weather is changing as the fog gets compressed down to the surface, and that's reducing the visibility there. now, here are some things you want to watch out for. the effects of heat on your body, pay really close attention to not only yourself, but those around you. if you are feeling dizziness or thirsty or you have heavy sweating, rapid heart rate or weakness, that could be signs of heat exhaustion.

the step up would be heat stroke, where you feel confusion, you stop sweating, red, hot, dry skin, a rapid strong pulse, as well as loss of consciousness. that's when you need to get to the emergency room. with heat exhaustion, you may still have time to turn things around before it heads to heat stroke. you want to make sure you're being really careful with yourself and your pets as well. think about this. if the air temperature is 86, hot asphalt could be as hot as 135 degrees in direct sunlight. even at 87 degrees, the asphalt is 143. so do not take pets out walking during those hottest hours of the day. and we're talking about temperatures even beyond that, with livermore reaching 97 today, we could see a high of 100 in concord, 90 in napa this afternoon, and 93 tomorrow. this will be the peak of the heat where we start to see triple digits shifting around, morgan hill hitting 101 degrees, fairfield up to 103. it's still pretty hot for

sunday. where you can find some relief will be near the coastline, san francisco temperatures will reach into the 70s. so much nicer there. and also, for all of the bay area, we start to cool off for the fourth of july, with some of our hottest temperatures in the low to mid-80s, san francisco will have 70 throughout the weekend, but for the fourth of july the fog rolls in and it will be up to 65. mike, how light is our friday light? >> sunlight light. the biggest deal at the toll plaza is that the issue may be eastbound because of the light on your windshield. as we're looking at the metering lights, the impact on the toll plaza, not really here. there's a little slowing up the incline, very light traffic. slowing down the eastshore freeway and also a crash that's been reported around gillman. it's a distraction for the westbound commute. that's about the only issue right now. the metering lights are on. back to you. >> thanks, mike.

stalled, but our team poked through. good friday morning. we delivered results for viewers at both nbc bay area and telemundo 48. let's start at telemundo 48 responde. consumer investigator arlen fernandez recently helped out oscar in hayward. he researched a life insurance policy but says he didn't enroll. turns out the company charged him $75 a month for 36 months, that is a total of $2,695. oscar says the company refused to refund his money, so he asked arlen to throw him a lifeline. she did and got oscar his full $2,695 back. next up, richard in los gatos. the headline, his newspaper delivery stopped when his delivery person retired. he claims he called almost daily, but still no paper. so he called nbc bay area responds. we pinged the publisher and richard's deliveries resumed.

is back. the marin county fair starts today, as the temperatures heat up we're tracking what you can expect. this is "today in the bay." expect a lot of stomach aches. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. before you head out to the fair, let's check in with the forecast. i know a lot of you have been hearing about it. kari, you've been talking about the extreme heat across the bay area and we're going to see triple digits. >> temperatures are going to heat up quickly. morgan hill, right now it's a cool 55 degrees. whatever you have planned, try to get it in before temperatures heat up. we see the trend already at 70 degrees at 9:00. it's 82 degrees at 11:00 and 91 at 1:00 in the afternoon. we're headed for 100 degrees there today. and concord also reaching into the triple digits, but we are still seeing some areas getting some relief from that heat. san mateo staying in the 70s today, hayward reaching 82, and

we're still in the low 70s in san francisco. tomorrow we reach the peak of the heat, santa rosa reaching 95, but it could be as hot as 103 degrees in fairfield, and we are going to have more triple digits on sunday as well. we've also been talking a lot about this, nationwide there have been storms rolling through. as of now, due to weather, there are no airport delays. but we've been keeping a close eye on our airports here locally because people will be traveling through the weekend. for more on the travel chaos, i'll send it back over to you. >> good to see that board now because we know travelers this week certainly have been feeling it. likely today, too. some of those delays and cancellations affecting thousands of flights. some of those people left with little to no options. they've actually been stranded at the airport. >> some for days. all of this in the lead-up to the fourth of july weekend travel, which is expected to bring over 150,000 passengers to sfo alone today. conejero saab is live at sfo this morning with a look at how things are faring this morning. has there been any sign of improvement? look at all the luggage behind you that needs to get connected with passengers. >> reporter: that's right, they need to be reunited with their owners. good morning, marcus and laura. we're here at the baggage claim now, united terminal 3 at sfo. in the last hour we were upstairs and we saw what looked to be promising signs on the departure and arrival board. but if you come downstairs, this is where you see the effect of those delays and cancellations in recent days. you can also see that the line there behind us, or what was behind us at the baggage claim help desk has only gotten longer since we've been here in the last hour or so. i spoke to one gentleman saying he was supposed to leave on wednesday for nicaragua. his trip almost completely

ruined. that gentleman is trying to get his bags for an 11:30 flight. other passengers have had similar experiences and shared those with us. >> i got delayed and then they kept pushing it back. a couple hours went by, we're just waiting to get more staff. then eventually at 3:00 in the morning they canceled it. >> i have to say delta did a lot of in terms of recovery, they were super responsive in terms of getting me on a flight that i needed, the soonest nonstop. there were a couple of snafus and they have refunded some money that i had spent in terms of upgrading. >> reporter: now, while most airlines have recovered from this week's weather-related issues, united airlines has still been struggling. yesterday they canceled 14% of their flights. now, aaa projects over 4 million americans will be flying to their destinations this weekend, 150,000, as mentioned, expected to pass through sfo.

here at the baggage claim, we see employees working hard to try to sift through what they can and help passengers. there's also a qr code flashing which is posted around this area, it's also there on that screen, passengers can come back and try to scan the qr code. hopefully that will help them locate their baggage if you put in your information. so there are definitely efforts to try and bounce back from these recent days, but so far there are still people waiting to get on their flights and to really get their baggage, see some improvement. it's not just about traveling in the air this holiday weekend. a lot of americans are also taking to the roads this weekend, over 43 million people, according to aaa, will be taking to the road, dodging all these airport delays. aaa suggests that there are some better times that you can be on the road, those worse times to hit the road is today between

10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., which is a pretty big gap. tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. if you're coming back on july 4th, try to dodge the roads in the afternoon, as well as on july 5th. but to take a better look at gas prices and how that will fare this holiday weekend, let's go to mike. crazy delays over there, air travel. you don't want to have delays that you don't necessarily have to have, like running out of gas. hopefully a better price. we have $4.06 in the north bay, it's at costco on plaza drive. then next in the south bay we're going to call out cupertino with the best deal, $4.15 at cupertino car wash. same price there, $4.15 in hayward, head to costco, two choices, and they're going to check i.d.s. get on the roadways, it's our friday card, playing with a

lighter traffic flow overall, and of course pre-holiday as well. we see an easy flow of traffic. there is a crash in the westbound direction. that's why we have westbound slowing approaching gillman just off of richmond. everything else moving smoothly. we take a look at 680, that's cleared from overnight construction crews. better for the tri-valley. back to you. happening today, san francisco leaders will host a virtual town hall, this is to discuss a recent deadly police shooting. that shooting happened last thursday in the richmond district, when officers arrived to that home, they found an 84-year-old man hurt. while helping that victim, that's when they came in contact with the suspect attempting to stab the officers. officers then fired their weapons, killing that man who was armed with a knife. during the investigation, officers found a 76-year-old woman in that home dead, along with her dog. police have not confirmed the connection between the people at that home, but neighbors say they were a family.

the town hall begins at 3:00 this afternoon. happening today in oakland, a mother accused of killing her 10-year-old daughter will face a judge. rosa suarez is facing homicide charges after allegedly stabbing her daughter to death in their oakland apartment. officers say the girl who died lived with her mother and her mother's boyfriend at the time. police had responded to calls for help in the past. her court hearing is scheduled for 9:00 this morning. moving you forward, a new vaccine for rsv will be ready for older americans this fall. the cdc signed off on rsv vaccine approval last month by the fda. now, the cdc says people 16 and older can get the new rsv vaccine first, but should speak with a doctor before doing so. people with chronic heart or lung disease, weakened immune systems and living in long-term care facilities are at higher risk for rsv. the marin county fair opens today and this year's theme is

electrifying. the theme is supposed to represent marin county's drive to be a clean and green fair. doors open today at 11:00 at the marin county fairgrounds. today's opening day is free for kids under 12 and seniors over 65. opening day is the director's favorite part of the year. >> literally thousands of kids lined up waiting to get in, and they are just so excited, their energy is palpable, and i do a countdown with them. it's really a moment that just gives me goosebumps and makes me realize how important what we're doing is, actually. >> the fair ends on july 4th, so get in and enjoy it. tickets are on sale for about 25 bucks. you can see all the animals as well. it looks like a lot of fun. meteorologist kari hall joins us. it's going to be hot this weekend. >> i love the season, but sometimes you have to deal with the heat, trying to go out and

enjoy the fair. but at least in marin county we have milder temperatures compared to some of the other events around the bay area. and of course in time for fireworks temperatures will be coming back down. when the gates open at 11:00, we have temperatures around 70 degrees, really nice here, and reaching 80 degrees in the middle of the day. wear the sunscreen and hat, you'll be just fine. where we will have high heat will be the alameda county fair in pleasanton. in the middle of the day today, it's up to 95 degrees, and even as we go into the evening t's still hot. we also have the stars and strides run this weekend for tomorrow morning. the time the race begins, it will be 68 degrees. thank goodness it's early in the day because quickly temperatures heat up. by 10:00 we're already at 80 degrees, as we head for the mid-90s. where you can find cooler

a microclimate weather alert as we deal with hotter temperatures today. in martinez as you're heading out the door, it is 58 degrees. nice and cool now. but you can see how quickly those temperatures will be heating up as we head for the mid-90s later today. we're going to take a look at all of our microclimates and where temperatures will be reaching over 100 degrees in a few minutes. in oakland, we're looking at the nimitz, close to 66, you see the over-crossing. farther north around 29th, reports of a roadside fire. maybe smoke visible from the freeway. it doesn't look like there are any buildings involved, but we're going to check on the effect, if it's impacting traffic coming up. >> thank you so much. it is a quarter until 7:00 right now. new this morning, yosemite park rangers are warning visitors will coming to the park. you know that yosemite national park is very popular during the summer, and right now traffic is said to be so bad people have been waiting almost five hours just to get into the park.

the long waits are because last year rangers stopped requiring people to reserve a spot to get inside. intense snow from the winter caused a lot of damage to the park, and forced some of it to close. park rangers suggest people take yosemite area regional transportation or yarts instead of driving. a federal judge will not dismiss e. jean carroll's lawsuit against president trump. he asked the judge to drop the lawsuit but the judge decided trump's arguments for dismissing the lawsuit are without merit. the ruling follows a series of recent twists in the legal battle between trump and carroll. carroll filed the first defamation suit against trump in 2019 and filed a second civil suit against him in 2022. the case is set to go to trial in january. taking a live look in washington, d.c. this morning,

this is where we're expecting the supreme court will wrap up its final day of ruling this year. now, on docket is a number of key cases, including student loan forgiveness. president biden announcing his plan last year to forgive up to $20,000 in loans for 37 million americans. another major case, whether businesses can refuse certain services for lgbtq customers. this revolve around the colorado website designer who refused to design wedding websites for same-sex couples. this all comes one day after justices issued a 6-3 decision banning the use of race conscious admission programs at schools and universities. rapid heart rate. you want to make sure if you're feeling some of those symptoms, you're getting hydrated and getting to a cooler area. it could turn into heat stroke, which is a more severe case where you could have confusion, no sweating, red, hot dry skin, as well as a rapid, strong pulse and loss of consciousness. that's when you need to get to the emergency room. so we are once again watching out for ourselves and our pets. you don't want to take them out walking during the hottest hours of the day. if the air temperature is 87 degrees, the asphalt in direct sunlight could be 143 degrees. that could cause some burns there. so be really careful this weekend in not going out during the hottest hours of the day. concord reaching 100 degrees today. we could see how hot those temperatures will be away from the coastline. san francisco still nice and mild, but the temperatures peak tomorrow at 103 degrees in fairfield, and still pretty hot on sunday. our seven-day forecast shows cooling just in time for the

yesterday on sullivan court. the flames spread to the back of the house and into the attic. firefighters got the fire under control in under 40 minutes. one of the homeowners was taken to the hospital for minor burns. firefighters said hot ashes in the trash can near the house caused that fire. to a live look outside, this is in livermore, where the temperature is not too bad right now. they are expected to reach 100 degrees tomorrow. the national weather service has issued a heat advisory through sunday for most of the bay area, and this hot weather also increasing the risk of wildfires. we already saw one brush fire break out overnight on fuller avenue not far from 280 and 87. the fire department put it out before it could spread to any homes. not clear what caused the fire, but a battalion chief reminds everyone not to set off fireworks as we're inching closer to fourth of july celebrations. >> it's going to feel like july, finally. we are going to have hot
