the bridge deck. look at san francisco. you finally managed sunshine and mid-70s today. we had a high during the 6:00 hour of about 76 degrees in san francisco. earlier, 100 degree temperatures in the dry valley. a little bit cooler now, in the low 90s. 108 degrees with a high there today. 105 degrees in concord. san jose is in the mid-90s. san francisco did make it into the mid-70s. we are going to see a warm evening. probably the warmest evening of this heat wave that will carry through for one more day tomorrow. same areas under the heat advisory, several locations in the north bay, east bay, and south bay. one more day of 90s for a chance of temperatures climbing close to 100 degrees again tomorrow inland. cooling is on the way as we approach the fourth of july. some high temperatures will be trending 20 degrees cooler than today. we will give you the countdown to the cooling trend in the forecast in a few minutes.

heat. >> reporter: christie smith, nbc bay area news. today's heat slow down the commute for trains. they ran slower speeds because of the high temperatures. the slowdown added at least 10 minutes to travel time for most people coming into or out of the east bay. >> it's a little bit of a delay. we had a wedding to go to. >> trains started running at normal speed about two hours ago as the temperatures cooled down. there are predictions this four day fourth of july weekend will set travel records. delays and cancellations are improving, that's good news, after a week of chaos and cancellations nationwide. so far today at sfo there have been 147 delays and nine cancellations according to flight aware. there is a jump from our last update at 5:00 p.m.

they say it's much slower than what they have been seeing the last couple of days. cancellations are spread out across multiple airlines and not as concentrated with united airlines as we saw earlier in the week. united is apologizing for those mass disruptions. it announced today it would give 30,000 miles to effective travelers. especially those that were delayed overnight or never got to their destination at all. it may also have to reduce its flight schedule going forward. the ceo today said that much of the issue was newark international airport, new jersey. it's a major hub. the ceo predicted gridlock would continue there. there is no limit on how many tweets twitter users can read per day. 10,000 tweets for anyone who pays eight dollars a month for twitter premium. all other users have a limit of 1000 per day. the announcement came from the twitter owner, elon musk. it has been the hottest topic sense. emma, why is twitter imposing this limit? >> reporter: i spoke to the

cyber security experts about this. they say it is a strategy that is meant to boost revenue for the company, which we mostly believe is struggling financially. elon musk tweeted that he is limiting tweets to stop ai companies and data scraping. which means taking users data for free. he is also limiting users to viewing 600 tweets a day, or 6000 if you are verified with twitter blue, meeting a paying customer. throughout the day he raised limit, first 800, and then to 1000 tweets for unverified users , and 10 times that amount for twitter blue subscribers. a professor taking about ai genetics explains that this is a strategy to balance twitter's budget and -- three quarters of twitter staff. he claims it was necessary to prevent the company from going bankrupt.

why would a company say, use us less? >> just like any other business. it's actually quite common among internet companies. they have to balance their cost. a chocolate chip cookie maker has to sell a cookie for more than it costs to make them. more than ingredients, more than running the oven. this is where twitter is at. >> reporter: the risk here is that people may quit using twitter altogether, which would reduce use for advertisers and ai companies will look elsewhere if they decide it is not worth paying for twitter. reporting live in the newsroom, nbc bay area news. a man is fighting for his life tonight after being shot in oakland. police say it happened before: 4:00 p.m. when officers arrived they found a man in a car with at least one gunshot wound to his

head. that man is in critical condition at a hospital. a new group of asylum- seekers arrived from the mexican border. the 48 migrants are from eight different countries, including cuba, guatemala, and venezuela. the group rode a bus from texas to saint anthony's croatian church in los angeles. the planned journey was organized by several immigrant trade groups. unlike the recent case -- of sacramento unexpectedly with the promise of jobs and lodging. city officials and other leaders were on hand to welcome the group. >> these people are coming from incredible, difficult situations. a lot of times the united states, due to foreign policy, is involved in the difficult situations of these countries in latin america. as a country that is built by immigrants, created by immigrants, we have to make sure that in these moments of difficulty we live by our principles and our values.

>> asylum-seekers have family in l.a. and some were able to reunite right away. let's take a look outside on the bay bridge tonight. traffic is slowing much better after a busy day on the roads. here is what it was like on the bridge this afternoon. bumper-to-bumper traffic. you can see a big crowd headed into and out of the city. it costs drivers more to head into san francisco today. the tolls increased on the golden gate bridge. users will see rates go from $8.40 to $8.75. you can find a full breakdown of the fares on our website, nbcbayarea.com. there are also changes taking effect at the pump. filling up this fourth of july weekend will cost you a little more. that's because california's annual gas tax increase kicks in today. the extra four cents at the pub will be used for -- statewide, the regular cost for unleaded, $4.83 a gallon.

it was $1.30 more than the national average. it's the first day of july. some new laws are taking effect today. one of the laws, california is the first in the nation to allow somebody to permanently seal all prior criminal convictions if the person meets certain criteria. this new law does not apply to individuals convicted of serious and violent felonies, or any felony regarding sex offender registration. another law taking effect today will formally recognize juneteenth as a state holiday, already a federal holiday. but this means all community colleges and public schools will be closed on the holiday and it will be a paid day off for state employee new laws are affecting everything from bounty hunting to housing. it's quite a range. we have a full list in the trending bar on our website, nbcbayarea.com.

a big change for many folks working in san francisco. the minimum wage for the city is getting a one dollar per hour boost. starting today the minimum wage is $18.07 per hour. this is the largest minimum wage increase in nearly a decade. san francisco is not the only bay area city with the increase. check this out. this shows six bay area cities where wages jumped up today. emeryville is number one. it now has the areas highest minimum wage.

$18.67 per hour. starbucks workers were on strike today joining a large strike at stores across the country. employees of this starbucks location walked out of the job and onto the picket line. they said that they want to send a clear message to all store managers that pride month decorations are welcome. there have been many instances of flags and other items taken down this june according to workers. workers also say that they voted to unionize in april and starbucks refuses to negotiate with them. they did not yet have a contract. >> equal wages, higher wages. better hours. there are full- time workers that need those hours to survive. as well as trans healthcare. >> they said the union's claim about pride decorations are false.

no immediate comment on today's strike. the company has previously said they support their workers rights to demonstrate and have their voices heard. helping the on housed through this heat wave. the on house response group visited several homeless camps in san jose today. the main goal was to help people with their pets, especially cats. they were spayed, neutered, got their shops. the group then returned the pets to their owners. >> i can't afford to have my cat neutered. for them to provide the service, to come get the cat, bring it here, and bring it back to us, that's great. a lot of us don't have vehicles. we don't have means of transportation or money to take the bus, light rail, or anything. >> the group also had passed out water icicles to cool people down. a rescue team found a person unconscious on marshall's each. they flew the victim to a trauma center with a helicopter . this is not that video, but

they are on the hot beach and you jump in. it was startling but it probably felt good today. and maybe tomorrow. but not for long. >> san francisco and the interbay will warm up. we had 70s and 80s instead of a foggy 60. it seems like since the start of the year it has been that way. but we did get up to 90s earlier in san jose. now cooling into the low 80s. what a night out around south bay. we have the stadium, california klesko and earthquake. l.a. galaxy, the weather is now cooling off. nice temperatures around south bay. technically that's clear. san rafael is starting to cool off. now the fog is pouring back in. look at that climbing over the land with the cool marine air. it is right at the bridge deck level. it has been squished down by high, strong pressure. today was expected to be the

heat wave and high pressure did exactly that. they will bring those former temperatures down closer to the interbay and surface. we are still hanging on to the 90s inland. the warmest we will see for this holiday weekend is happening outside right now. by this time tomorrow we will see more wind in that area and the marine air will climb back up again. notice the wind speeds. technically this is onshore. but we will likely get to mid afternoon to early evening tomorrow has a lot more of that wind. the wind will be stronger tomorrow and it will eventually have low clouds. the low cloud cover will start to come back up which will lead to more widespread going by monday and tuesday. tomorrow morning is going to start off very similar. 60 solo 70's. patchy, dense fog along san francisco. temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. and for one more day, mid to upper 90s. a chance to see some temperatures close to 100 there

. kelly will be on the way. wind is picking up into late tomorrow. by monday watch how the low clouds filling as we head toward tuesday morning. that will be the one punch that really drives temperatures down. by monday afternoon, upper 80s to low 90s, just in time for fourth of july. look at that. 80s inlets for your outdoor plans. there are patchy low clouds and fog closer to san francisco. this summer -sized ridge of high pressure starts to give some ground. the strongest high pressure we have seen since september. you guessed it, low-pressure, more ocean air, and cooling in the seven-day forecast. san francisco, briefly in the 70s for a couple of days. back into the low 60s. valley high, upper 90s to 108 degrees. back into the 80s and 70s for wednesday, thursday, and friday. overall, pretty good timing. nice and comfortable for the fourth of july. >> just a couple more days in

thank you for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. it has been 10 years since 19 firefighters known as the granite mountain hotshots lost their lives. battling one of the deadliest wildfires in united states history. the fire had been burning for two days after it was ignited by a lightning strike. the 20 man crew became trapped while fighting the fire on june 30th, 2013. only one survived. the names of the fallen crew members were read at a special ceremony in arizona.

the only surviving crew member read the same prayer he recited at the memorial service 10 years ago. out of the north bay tonight police are asking for help -- a woman's death at a motel. this happened after 1:00 a.m. on north texas tree off of the road from oakmont plaza. fairfield pd said they were called and were told a woman was possibly dying inside of the motel. by the time officers arrived they found a 25-year- old woman dead. police haven't said how the woman died and she has been identified. they are asking anyone with tips to give them a call. a community in southern california is pushing to protect marine life this fourth of july. marina del ray is pushing to cancel the fireworks show at the beach because of the toxic algae bloom that is killing hundreds of dolphins and sea lions.

some sea lions are being treated just yards from the spot where fireworks will be launched on tuesday. this will cause further stress to the already six sea lions. experts say this is the most severe algae bloom they have ever seen that could have reached the bay area in the next room week or two. the coastline is between santa barbara and san diego where more than 100 dolphins have died. san francisco's twin peaks is back to normal today after hundreds of volunteers packed up the trying though. it's been a pride month tradition for nearly 3 decades now. this year it was the largest it has ever been as a political statement against anti-lgbtq laws being passed by conservatives and parts of the country. happy birthday to one of the youngest cities. -- is celebrating its 40th anniversary today. we kicked off the morning at 9:00 with a parade route through town. after that it has been an all-

welcome back. an unexpected side effect many of us are seeing in this heat. more bugs indoors. >> pest control companies say they are seeing an uptick in calls for help with this heat wave. alyssa explains why this big warm-up and the rain this winter is combining for some summer problems. >> reporter: pest control companies tell us that if he you feel like you are baking in the heat of the bugs are probably feeling that too. and they are probably looking for a little refuge inside of your home. several pest control companies tell us they have seen an increase in calls for help with bugs over the past few days. everything from cockroaches to black widows. and to pincer bugs. pest control operates around the bay area and say they have seen a spike in calls over the past couple of days in the

about nine months ago we had temperatures this high caused by a similar sized ridge of high pressure. right now we've got temperatures around the bay area at 100 degrees. concord, 105 degrees today. 94 in san jose. even san francisco, relatively speaking, above average. 76 degrees. really from the heat meant -- and the coast. but after the hot day we are still seeing upper 90s out toward fairfield based on the schooling that we are seeing now. we are likely to see 70s and 80s through 8:00 tonight. another heat advisory for one more day tomorrow. inland valley, especially the inland east bay, upper 90s to about 100 degrees for another day. but cooling changes are just around the corner. we will see more sea breeze pick up extra low clouds returning, leading to cooling changes arriving just in time for the fourth of july. we will give you an outlook on cooler temperatures around for your fourth of july plan and

the rest of your seven-day forecast is coming up in a few minutes. >> you can keep track of the temperatures with the nbc area they news app. airlines may also soon see a new source of potential problems. here is a live look at sfo. the new 5g system will be powering airports, like that one, tomorrow. there are some concerns that signals could mess with older aircraft navigation equipment. so far telecoms have delayed activating 5g systems near the airport so that they would have time to upgrade their planes. most major u.s. airlines say they are ready for tomorrow's change, with one big exception. delta says they still need upgrade equipment on 190 of their planes. the carrier says they do not expect to have to cancel any flights over the issue. new details on how the oakland diocese is trying to -- sexually abusing children.

we learned two of the accused priests are active and currently working in the east bay. here is our investigator reporter. >> reporter: oakland diocese attorney say that names of accused priests should be sealed to protect their privacy during this ongoing bankruptcy process. victim advocates say the identities need to be public to encourage potential victims to come forward, and because some of the priests may pose a present a danger. >> it started when i was nine and 10. >> reporter: in 2021 john was the first to file a lawsuit and publicly accuse john mccracken of sexually abusing him as a child. before mccracken's death in 2012 he was one of the east bay's longest-serving priests. >> you would have me come in his office and tell me that i've been a very good boy. that turned into taking my clothes off. that turned into him having his way with me in every way he wanted to do.

>> reporter: we are not revealing john doe's real name because he is an alleged victim. since you have come forward at least three additional accusers of mccracken have also come forward to file lawsuits. >> i'm very moved and encouraged by it. i really thought i was alone on an island. >> reporter: the civil cases against mccracken and remains pending. despite being accused by multiple people his name does not appear on the open diocese on list of credibly accused clergy, which accused -- determined by the bishops internal review board. in fact, mccracken is one of more than 60 newly accused east bay clergy whose names don't appear on that list. the oakland diocese declared bankruptcy in the -- recent sex abuse lawsuits. attorneys for the diocese requested to seal the names of accused priests, arguing that

at least some of them should remain confidential during the legal process. they will avoid scandal and harassment. plaintiff attorneys responded, saying that publicly naming alleged perpetrators helps potential victims come forward. >> there are so many people that have not come to terms with their abused. >> reporter: this is john doe's attorney. she has this message for the church. >> practice what you preach. do the right thing. do the right thing for these victims. >> they are not doing that now. >> reporter: on a legal call with creditors last week the diocese revealed two of its recently accused priests are still working at east bay parishes. the investigative unit has confirmed records that one of them is father george -- he is currently a priest at santa maria parish. in this 2022 legal complaint father mobile is accused of sexually abusing a teenage altar boy in his parish and at other locations in the

mid-1970s. he said, quote, i categorically deny any allegations of abuse. i have never abused anyone in any way, at any time. i have never been involved in any disciplinary action, criminal case, or civil matter. i have never been accused of assault or wrongdoing in my lifetime. i am deeply saddened and distressed by this -- of my name and reputation. oakland bishop michael barber sent us a statement as well, saying he directed a formal federal prosecutor to conduct an investigation which found the allegations against him not credible. and he continues to support his priest. as the bankruptcy case slowly moves forward alleged victims say so does their healing process. >> it's been up and down, just like my whole life has been, after suffering from traumatic abuse. >> reporter: the diocese are expected to submit the response

here too. we have heat here, but not humidity. let's not mistake the fact that it was 20 degrees hotter than the average high that you typically get this time of year. san jose was in the mid-90s earlier. not too bad now. 82 degrees. but the spot that did go, 21 degrees hotter than average. average high was 87 for this day. 108 degrees, still slowly cooling at 92. now cooling to the mid-70s. earlier san francisco did manage in the 70s. 65 now. eventually we will see more low clouds ramping up in the inland. take your pick, 60, 70, 80, 90. we have everything on the map here. likely tonight, if you tune in at 11:00, we will see 70s and 80s outside of some of those inland valleys. the wind speeds right now are not too strong. they are onshore and will trend stronger tomorrow.

that will be one of the reasons why temperatures probably won't get quite as hot as they were today. we are still talking about seeing more upper 90s. the temperature slightly above 100 for at least one more day on the inland valleys and morgan hill. 50s and 60s to start the morning. just like today, lunchtime temperatures inland will be climbing to the 90s. and for one more day the heat advisory through 9:00 on sunday. lots of 90s on the map for the sunday forecast. the low clouds will deepen up on monday and start to surge inland into tuesday morning. that will really bring inland temperatures down. the marine air is deepening up and going to coastal hilltops driving temperatures into the 80s and low 90s by monday. just in time for fourth of july. that looks more comfortable inland, with 80s around the board. let's take you on the fourth of july outlook. we see highs on tuesday in the 80s. more comfortable around the tri-valley. upper 80s with mostly sunny skies in livermore. looking
