where fireworks where being used illegally, they have the potential for easily igniting all the vegetation behind us. >> at 5:00, concerns about
5:01 am
illegal fireworks ahead of the july 4th holiday, including one weekend fire possibly linked. ahead, the latest on that investigation and a new warning from firefighters. hoping to avoid a repeat in travel chaos. some travelers wonder if their trips home will be as hectic following a record-breaking travel weekend. we're live in washington with the new white house push to ease congestion. and extreme heat will finally move out of the bay area, but how are the skies tomorrow night? we're tracking your pre-fourth forecast. this is "today in the bay." i remember as a kid, the day before the fourth, going to buy fireworks. we have limitations here. >> all the illegal fireworks. >> good morning to you on this monday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kyra clapper. laura garcia is off, probably not buying fireworks because she's a safe, rule-following
5:02 am
citizen. let's start with a look at the forecast. we'll get to mike in a second. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. it was hot this weekend. >> who are you telling? it was hot, i didn't do anything. we just stayed in the air-conditioning. the good thing is as we approach the holiday it's going to be much cooler. take a look at our live view right now over san jose, with a full moon overhead and also a mostly clear sky. once again, it won't be as hot. we're reaching 86 degrees. so that's still going to be warm during the middle of the day, reaching 90 in livermore and 88 degrees in concord, upper 70s and low 80s for much of the north bay. that looks better. we do continue to cool offs with we go into the day tomorrow. your fourth of july in hayward only reaching 77 degrees. we'll see a high of 88 in morgan hill and 66 in san francisco. the thing is, we'll have to see if the fog rolls in in time for the fireworks. i'm watching the visibility,
5:03 am
as well as the temperatures in the microclimate forecast. mike, you're tracking issues for the roads. >> we have fog and that is one major concern. even though folks across the golden gate bridge are used to dealing with some fog, but chp says it's a lot denser today. it doesn't show up on the road weather index. a smooth ride. we're looking at a lighter traffic flow. we were watching a crash, had almost all the lanes of northbound 880 blocked, but that has cleared in the last few minutes and traffic is back at speed. there's more fog along the coast for highway 1. back to you. >> mike, thanks. we begin with breaking news. a police shooting in the east bay. at this point authorities are confirming just a few details, but we do know surrounding streets are shut down due to incidents at two locations. one is at liberty street and 163rd avenue near interstate 580 and the other is two blocks away
5:04 am
near calypso. we know alameda county deputies and chp are investigating. the incident happened sometime after midnight. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is monitoring that situation in san leandro and he'll have an update at 5:30. extreme temperatures and possibly fireworks leading to two close calls over the weekend. one led to a grass fire along the bay front trail in hercules yesterday afternoon. firefighters say strong winds pushed the flames and it burned about five acres. >> this fire and another one overnight are too close for comfort. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san bruno where safe and sane fireworks are legal, and, ginger, we hear the warnings about fireworks time and time again. we were talking about it at the beginning of the show. are people listening? >> reporter: good morning, kyra and marcus. you hope that these warnings don't fall on deaf ears.
5:05 am
they're warnings that are echoed not just by fire crews but the companies that are selling the fireworks. we're here in san bruno in front of one of those booths. if you go on the company's website there's a long list of rules and warnings to abide by, things that fire crews are saying time and time again across the bay area in hopes of avoiding scenes like this. you're taking a look at footage from a fire from pittsburg, it's taken from a park west of the marina. fire crews responded to reports of a fire in the grass area. when they arrived, they found large trees that caught fire. now, this happened overnight. they believe suspects playing with fireworks set fire to an arbor shade close to vegetation at the park. six full length palms went up in flames, among other trees. >> we did find some fireworks next to the pergola, but we don't have anybody. >> reporter: you're also looking at what was left of the
5:06 am
fireworks. one of those was found near the trees. that's what's leading investigators to believe that fireworks were involved in that specific fire. but as mentioned, a long list of warnings and rules to abide by, if you are looking to celebrate the fourth of july and those rules aren't something that you can work through or abide by, then you can also just leave the fireworks to the professionals and watch from a safe distance. it's one of the safest things to do. >> i agree with that. thanks so much, ginger. fireworks safety will, of course, be a huge concern over the next 48 or so hours. a new consumer product safety commission report finds last year 11 deaths were tied to fireworks. more than 10,000 people were injured. and between 2006 and 2022, fireworks injuries climbed 25%. there's some tips when it comes to fireworks in places where it is legal. light them away from people, homes and flammable materials.
5:07 am
never, and i mean never point or throw those fireworks at people. never attempt to re-light a firework, and keep some water nearby just in case they fail to ignite. we're going to take a live look at sfo this morning, where thankfully, things did improve this weekend for travelers compared to last week. this morning flightaware reports that at sfo just a handful of delays and three flight cancellations. it follows a hectic week last week at airports across the nation, mostly because of severe weather elsewhere. yesterday sfo experienced 123 delays, but only nine cancellations. the weekend cancellation rate nationwide, surprisingly, was less than 1%. that's some good news with air travel expected to return to near full capacity later this week. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is monitoring the developments live in washington.
5:08 am
good morning. travelers must be crossing their fingers there's no repeat of last week. >> reporter: that's exactly right. good morning. air travel records were already broken at the start of this holiday weekend, but severe weather in parts of the country this week continue to put -- or could put a damper on travelers' plans this week. millions of travelers are hitting the airports over the july 4th holiday, the tsa screening more than 2.8 million passengers on friday alone. the high volume comes after a rough week of cancellations and delays. >> most passengers understand that no one can control the weather, but anything that's under the control of the airlines and anything that we can do on the fa aside, we need to continue pushing to make sure there's there's the smoothest experience for passengers everywhere. >> reporter: the biden administration is working to help reduce travel troubles.
5:09 am
>> as we're holding the airlines accountable, we're also partnering with them at the operational level to solve tactical problems that can come up hour-by-hour when you have a thunderstorm, staffing issue. >> reporter: airports nationwide ramped up staffing and are taking measures to prepare for the holiday rush. >> we're still certainly up from the pre-pandemic times. >> reporter: aaa says despite passengers paying 40% to 50% more for flights, bookings are not slowing down. >> we also know people are looking to take more generational trips with families, take some of those larger trips that maybe they had to put off. so across the board it's a good sign, certainly, that travel is coming back. >> reporter: the summer travel season is off to a busy start. and aaa predicts that air travel will set a new record for the independence day holiday. the previous record of more than 3.9 million air travelers was set back in 2019. >> that's one of the rare perks
5:10 am
of working the holidays, we don't get stuck at the airports. brie, thank you so much. well, speaking of vacation and food, happening tomorrow on the nation's birthday, america's best known eating contest returns, with south bay's top dog ready to defend his title. we could only be talking about san jose's joey chestnut. when it comes to competitive eating, he is the g.o.a.t. forget about grazing, he will be scarfing down hot dogs, shooting for his 16th win at nathan's hot dog eating contest. chestnut holds the record for the most hot dogs eaten within -- 76 within ten minutes. >> wow. get ready for the first fully electric flying car, with one silicon valley startup getting the green light to start

summer. the next one is going to be august 1st and then august 30th, and then september 29th. so plenty of time to catch it. >> enjoy the brightness of the moon. i noticed it because the light was coming through the blinds. you're waking up, oh, it's super bright out there. >> and at 1:00 in the morning, that's shocking. we are going to see a lot of clear skies across the bay area today and it won't be as warm as it was over the weekend. let's head over to martinez where it's 67 right now, kind of warm to start our day. we may cool off another couple of degrees, but then as we go into today it's going to warm up a lot more slowly than we've seen the past few days. sunshine in the forecast, and here is something to check out, if you have the day off. the marin county fair is still happening today and it's going to be beautiful there, with temperatures in the upper 70s. mike has a look at where you can find lower gas prices. >> we're back on the leaderboard for the state. san jose shows up with $3.99 at

the 76 on redmon avenue. concord's best at $4.29. many spots are also at that same price. costco on monument boulevard is the one we call out today. in marin county, same price, $4.29 at hq fuels on shoreline highway in mill valley. you can all share prices through gasbuddy.com so we can take advantage of it. the roadways, the maps are showing green pretty much everywhere. we did have an earlier crash in fremont, northbound 880. i believe everything is off to the shoulder with no injuries. back to you. twitter sphere on fire. users are heated over a new crackdown announced by elon musk. we're going to tell you about the new limits for account holders musk argues is absolutely necessary. one recently unveiled apple headset making a new set of headlines before it even goes on

good monday morning. if you're about to head out the door and go to work in brentwood, it's still going to be hot. just not in the triple digits. we're going from 69 in the next hour to 92 at noon. we are still looking at some of our inland valleys, feeling the heat today.
5:17 am
we'll get a look at cooler temperatures ahead coming up. we're looking at the san mateo bridge where traffic is light, yet even for this hour there are a fewer lights than i usually see at 5:00, 6:00 in the morning. we're pre-holiday, probably a lot of folks working from home or not at all. let's check in with silvana. >> thank you, mike. good morning. wall street is set for a mixed open as the markets kick off the second half of the year. stocks are coming off a stellar first six months, driven by gains in mega cap tech and everything related to artificial intelligence. the nasdaq surging nearly 32% for its best first half to a year since 1983. the s&p 500 jumping roughly 16% for its best first half since 2019. the dow lagged, climbing just about 4%. now, in focus today we get data on manufacturing and it's also just a half day of trading ahead of the fourth of july holiday with the markets closing at 1:00

5:19 am
sales will grow about 50% per year for the near future. for the company to reach that mark, it will have to sell nearly 2 million vehicles per year. that's a lot of teslas. >> that's a lot of teslas. >> we see a lot around here. >> you guys have a ton of them. >> we do. >> thanks so much. 5:18 right now. speaking of elon musk, check this out. so new details, backlash from twitter users. this is after the social media giant placed a new temporary cap on the number of tweets users can view each day. over the weekend ceo elon musk tweeted unverified users could view a maximum of 600 posts per day. this is with verified twitter blue subscribers able to view 6,000. those numbers later moved to 1,000 and 10,000. musk cites extreme data scrapping and system malfunctioning, and insists that the changes will only be

5:22 am
it's 59 in san mateo, and as you step out the door in san jose it's 62 degrees. a little bit milder, but it will heat up again for the alameda county fair that's still going on today. gates open at noon. we're going to see temperatures in the upper 80s. still very warm today. at least we're not talking about highs over 100 degrees. in san jose, it will reach 86 degrees and 75 in san mateo and in oakland. and in novato, santa rosa, reaching 81 degrees. tomorrow we're still looking at those 60s near the coast and in san francisco, with our inland valleys reaching into the mid to upper 80s. and then on wednesday it continues to come down several degrees. as you see at the bottom of the screen, temperatures cool down further as this high pressure moves away and we'll get a low dropping into the pacific northwest, with the counterclockwise wind flow, it will push the ocean breeze into the bay area and cool temperatures much lower than we typically see for july. we're going from extreme heat to
5:23 am
nice, cool weather in time for this upcoming weekend. so whatever you didn't get to do this past weekend because of the heat, make plans to do that this weekend. we're rescheduling a lot of events. but it's going to be a nice one as temperatures continue to come down. mike, you've been watching a couple of things and now a crash? >> we're going to update one crash, the one i thought was completely off the roadway. it turns out chp says they do have one lane blocked. traffic is still light, past the crash we don't have to worry about much slowing. just the activity at the scene. then out of the altamont pass, another crash and this should be off to the shoulder. the slowing i saw has completely cleared, so i think all activity must have cleared just around greenville. back to you. >> thanks, mike. next on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> the company tells a viewer her check is in the mail, and yet it's nowhere to be found. i'm consumer investigator chris

some nearby streets still closed. we're live at the scene with new details revealed in the last few minutes about what happened. plus, widespread power outages and sweltering heat. thousands of homes left in the dark over the weekend. we have an update on pg&e's efforts to turn the power back on. and i heard kari say the temperatures might be a few degrees cooler, so you might want to head outside. we have some warnings for you if if you're headed out for a hike. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. laura garcia is off. >> and i'm marcus washington. well, we've been talking about that weather. let's get a look at it this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. and you say cooler than we experienced this weekend? >> yes, big changes for the inland valleys that had to deal with triple digits over the weekend. we didn't see as much of a change in san francisco with the low clouds and the fog drifting in at times, and we're seeing that again this morning as we're getting started with milder
5:32 am
weather. nice little breeze and the temperature is 59. as we go into today we're staying in the 60s with a mix of sun and clouds. compare that to the inland areas like concord hitting 88 degrees after seeing triple digits over the weekend, and morgan hill reaching 91. so feeling a little better in some spots. the good news is that it does continue to cool off in time for the fourth of july. so we'll have more on that in a few minutes. back to you. >> kari, thanks. breaking news this morning, east bay, police are saying a struggle with law enforcement officers led to a deadly shooting. >> within just the last few minutes, authorities gave their first update. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live near the scene in san leandro. what are they telling you happened? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. chp tells us that around 2:00 this morning we were chasing a car that was speeding on eastbound 580, and as you can see in the video that car eventually got off the freeway and crashed not far from where
5:33 am
i'm standing at 163rd and liberty. it turns out that car was stolen, that there were three men inside. they all had ski masks on. it's not clear what they were up to. that's part of the investigation. the men took off on foot with the chp officer running after them. when they got a couple blocks down the street, two of the men attacked the officer. they tried to disarm him. around this time an alameda county sheriff's deputy also arrived on the scene in response to the crash, saw the struggle, and according to the sheriff's office that deputy and the chp officer fired several shots and killed one of the men involved in the struggle with the officer. the other man was taken into custody. deputies then deployed a drone equipped with an infrared camera and they were able to detect the body heat of the third suspect. that person was hiding nearby. they took him into custody as well t. alameda county sheriff's office hasn't identified the men, but the lieutenant says she thinks they were maybe in the

age range of 18 to 20 years old. the officer and alameda sheriff's deputy were not hurt, and as is standard with any officer-involved shooting, the alameda county district attorney's office will be investigating. reporting live in san leandro, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of updates there. thanks, bob. 5:33 right now. firefighters are trying to learn what sparked this overnight fire in san jose. this happened near a homeless encampment a little before 4:00 a.m. briefly it forced a closure of part of highway 87 due to smoke. all lanes are now open again. we have new details this morning, pg&e crews appear to be making headway in restoring power that went out for thousands of bay area customers over the weekend. here is a look at the current outage map. most are in green, which means fewer than 50 customers are affected. but some larger outages are still an issue and last night the numbers surpassed 10,000.
5:35 am
one of pg&e's largest outages impacted central contra costa county. we spoke with an orinda fish store owner forced to purchase a generator to keep his fish alive and swimming. >> i was surprised that it happened, just because yesterday was way hotter, so i didn't expect something like this to happen today. >> and in the heat. yesterday's outage also knocked out power to the orinda theatre during a showing of the new "indiana jones" movie. that left about 160 moviegoers suddenly making alternate plans. movie theatres are the best place to go when it's hot outside. cold and dark. >> not when the power goes out. >> what a bummer. new this morning, while the coming days may be calling you to the outdoors, there are some things you may want to consider before you head out, especially in the east bay. >> it's part of nature. "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is here with warnings, everything from algae to rattlesnakes. >> so the weather has been hot,
5:36 am
as you well know. that means algae blooms and rattlesnakes are more active. but don't let that stop you if you want to head outdoors. just follow this advice from the east bay parks folks. they say avoid hiking alone, and as you are out stay on the trail. make sure you can see your feet and hands. scan the ground ahead of you. keep a close eye on your kids, keep them on the trail. keep your dogs on a leash. if you see a snake on the trail, leave it alone and then move away slowly. that might be challenging. but if a rattlesnake does bite, you will know it because of the sound and you will feel an intense burning. in that case, the advice is to stay calm, call 911 and keep that bite lower than your heart. if it's your legs, keep it lower, arms, lower than your heart. experts say don't waste time doing the tourniquets that you remember from boy scout days or trying to suck that venom out. they say get to professionals as quickly as possible.
5:37 am
if you are bitten by another kind of snake, you can wash with soap and water and then seek medical attention. those won't be quite as painful. if you were hoping to beat the heat lakeside, be aware at the beach in oakland and the niles swim area at fremont's horseshoe lake are closed because of a blue-green algae bloom. it can give you and your pets some serious tummy trouble, along with skin rashes. you can still swim at richmond's miller knox shoreline and livermore, but don't swallow the water and rinse off as soon as you can. no need to call 911 if you feel sick. just make sure you call your doctor if you don't feel well after swimming. we can expect more toxic algae blooms as well as the temperatures are surging. >> i feel like this is one of those stories recurring as it's
5:38 am
gotten warmer. >> as we know here in the newsroom, we have new parents, we have cycles of parents, so it's like, oh, this didn't apply to me a minute ago and now i have a dog and i'm going hiking. >> it's a good reminder. >> i remember when i just moved here i went to alum rock to hike. i ran, but then i went back, let's see, you can see it slithering. oh, yeah, i was back. i'm done, i'm out. >> they're very dangerous. the other snake bite will just hurt but the rattlesnakes you have to watch out for. >> i like the advice, keep everything below the heart. and speaking of toxic algae blooms, if you are one of the many planning to celebrate the fourth of july out on the water, california's office of emergency services has some reminders. always have a safety plan in place before you head out, make sure everyone is fitted with a

life jacket when in or near the water. designate a water watcher, that means taking turns with other adults to be responsible for watching the children. avoid alcohol. don't drink and boat. a live look in san francisco this morning. and a new look at the issues raising the most resident complaints these days. so this comes from a new "chronicle" analysis of the city's 311 hotline since 2022. residents have called most frequently about trash and dumping, with loose and bulky garbage behind most of those calls, one in four. complaints about graffiti are also more common, followed by overflowing trash cans and parking related issues. not surprised about the parking. any minute a rare plant in san francisco's conservatory of flowers is expected to bloom, causing a big stink in the process. >> we have a live look for you
5:40 am
at the conservatory inside golden gate park. it's one of the few spots to feature the rare corps flower. experts say the flower should bloom today after failing to do so last night. people lined up on sunday to get a look at the flower and a whiff. the flower gets its unofficial name from the awful smell it emits when it blooms, described as like rotting flesh. the smell is so strong, it even reaches outside the building. >> it smells like a very large dead something, like the strongest smell of a mouse times a thousand. >> it's just fascinating. nature is fascinating. >> once the flower does bloom, it's only open for two or three days and the conservatory expects a big surge in visitors. here is how it looked when one
5:41 am
of the corpse flowers last bloomed in june of 2022. i don't mind looking at it just from tv. i don't need to smell it. >> i'm like all of those people, i kind of want to smell it. >> okay, to each their own. >> i saw a mask and i don't think it was for covid. >> the experience. >> something to experience, right. we're going to have cooler weather as we enjoy our holiday. if you're getting up and heading to work this morning, i'm going to get you ready with a look at these temperatures. right now in walnut creek it is clearing out already and we're starting out with nice, cool temperatures. you may be heading to the alameda county fair today, gates open at noon. there in pleasanton, temperatures today reaching 90 degrees, much better than the heat we had over the weekend. we are looking at some cooler weather all around the bay area, reaching 66 in san francisco, san mateo headed for 75 degrees, and 79 in napa. i know you want to know about the fourth of july. it does continue to cool off,
5:42 am
especially in the inland valleys. mike, you had a crash at the bay bridge? >> we did. reported just east of the toll plaza, hov lanes. there's the hov lanes. watch as folks travel through the area at speed, they are not moving or changing lanes or having any problem. looks like everything is clear as you get to the toll plaza. no metering lights. so light, it's 5:41. that's the only thing on the grid. no slowing for highway 37 or out of the altamont pass. we do have the giants playing at oracle park, so keep that in mind for tonight at 6:45. and we did have the manzanita parking lot with some flooding. king tides are in place and the lower lot is closed. >> mike, thanks. brand new technology coming to the rescue for one hiker trapped in southern california. it happened after she was injured in an area with zero cell phone service, buttress skewers say her phone still
