this, after an early-morning altercation with police in the east bay. we have new details we're learning as the investigation gets under way. where fireworks are being used illegally, they have the potential for easily igniting all the vegetation behind us. >> concerns over illegal fireworks ahead of the july 4th holiday. we're live this morning with one incident firefighters are already pointing to as an example of the potential problems. and the airports calm once again, but holiday travelers are bracing for more chaos after a record-breaking weekend. we are live with the growing worries over return flights later this week. this is "today in the bay." good morning. thank you so much for joining us on this july 3rd. i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the commute coming up in just a bit. on this first monday in july, meteorologist kari hall has a little cooldown from this weekend. >> yeah, it was so hot in the inland areas.
6:01 am
we stayed cool in san francisco, but this is the reason why. take a look at that beautiful shot. >> gorgeous. >> in the city you can't see the sun rising, that's because it's above the fog. take a look at that little point there, that's the salesforce tower sticking up above the fog. this is looking from our sutro tower camera. beautiful start to the day, already clear in the inland valleys. and this is where temperatures will be warm, just not as hot as it was over the wen. we have a nice, mild start to our day, temperatures in the upper 60s at 8:00, at noon it's 80 degrees. we may need a little air-conditioning, just not blasting like it was in temperatures were in the triple digits. we continue to get slightly cooler air for spots like martinez, headed for low 80s, upper 70s and low 80s for much of the north bay and we'll get a look at the fourth of july forecast coming up. mike says it's been pretty smooth. >> look at this. there's no need for metering lights. we barely see any headlights.
6:02 am
we have a smooth flow of traffic at the bay bridge. i think a lot of folks seriously are looking at the tuesday holiday, extending it from the weekend. we'll see how many return on wednesday after the fourth of july holiday. reports of a roadside fire eastbound 80, getting away from the bay bridge, around university. reports of a tree fire. it's not affecting the freeway as far as lanes blocked but it may be a distraction. another crash north of golden gate park there is still going on for 19th avenue. but no major issues as far as the rest of the freeways around the bay. back to you. >> mike, thanks. we begin this 6:00 hour with breaking news and a police shooting in the east bay. in just the last hour, authorities confirmed with us one person is dead, two suspects are now in custody. investigators say the shooting was the result of a physical confrontation after a car chase involving three people. the incident also led to street closures at two locations, one is at liberty street and 163rd
6:03 am
avenue near 580 in san leandro t other about two blocks away, also on 163rd. so we do have a live look for you at the scene right now in san leandro. alameda county deputies and the chp are both investigating. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is monitoring the situation. at 6:30 he will have a live update. extreme temperatures and possibly fireworks leading to two close calls over the weekend. you can see one of those involving a grass fire. this is in front of a trail in hercules yesterday afternoon. firefighters say the strong winds pushed the flames and it burned about five acres. for neighbors, this fire and another one overnight, just too close for comfort. ginger conejero saab is live for us in san bruno where safe and sane fireworks are legal. we hear these warnings time and time, year after year. >> reporter: we do hear these warnings time and time again,
6:04 am
marcus. hopefully they're not falling on deaf ears. they're warnings that are echoed by fire crews across the bay area and even companies that sell the fireworks themselves, kind of like the one behind us here, it's not open yet, this booth will open at 10:00 a.m. this morning and stay open until 8:00. if you go on their website, you can see a long list of rules and warnings that people using their fireworks should abide by. these are the same warnings that fire crews are saying and repeating because they want to avoid things like this. you're taking a look at video of a fire that break out in pittsburg west of the marina. now, this happened overnight here, where a pergola caught fire, along with six full length palm trees. >> we did find some fireworks next to the pergola.
6:05 am
>> reporter: investigators believe that suspects were playing with fireworks and they set an arbor shade close to vegetation at the park on fire. you're seeing what was left of the fireworks that were found near one of those trees. here in san bruno, safe and sane fireworks are legal and they are sold at booths like this. but no fireworks, whether or not they're safe or sane, are allowed in certain designated areas. you want to make sure you are not using those, if you are caught using or possessing illegal fireworks, you can face fines up to $50,000 and possible jail time. another very safe and simple option is to leave the fireworks to the professionals and watch from a safe distance. that's always another way of celebrating the fourth of july holiday. back to you. >> leave it to the professionals. ginger, thank you. well, fireworks safety, of course, will be a big concern over the next 48 or so hours.
6:06 am
a new consumer product safety commission report finds last year 11 deaths were tied to those fireworks, more than 10,000 people were injured between 2006 and 2022. firework injuries climbed 25%. there are some tips when using those fireworks in places where it is legal. they say light them away from people, homes and flammable materials, and never point or throw those fireworks. also, you never want to attempt to re-light a firework that didn't go off and always, always keep some water nearby just in case they fail to ignite. from fireworks to holiday travel, a live look at sfo, where thankfully this morning things improved, at least the last couple of days, compared to last week. this morning flightaware reports just a handful of delays and four flight cancellations at sfo. but it follows a hectic week last week at airports across the nation, mostly because of severe
6:07 am
weather. yesterday sfo experienced 123 delays, only nine cancellations. the weekend cancellation rate nationwide was less than 1%. and that is great news with air traffic travel expected to return to near full capacity later this week as people are returning from their fourth of july holiday. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is monitoring the developments live in washington. brie, travelers must just be relaxed on their vacation and then stressed about going back to the airport because of the mess last week. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. and travelers, some of them have their fingers crossed that things run more smoothly this week. so air travel records were already broken at the start of this holiday weekend, but severe weather in parts of our country could cause some headaches as more travelers hit the roads over the next couple of days. millions of travelers are
6:08 am
hitting the airports over the july 4th holiday, the tsa screening more than 2.8 million passengers on friday alone. the high volume comes after a rough week of cancellations and delays. >> most passengers understand that no one can control the weather, but anything that's under the control of the airlines and anything that we can do on the faa side, we need to continue pushing to make sure there's the smoothest possible experience for air passengers everywhere. >> reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg says the biden administration is working to help reduce travel troubles. >> as we're holding airlines accountable on customer service, we're partnering with them at the operational level to solve those tactical problems that can come up hour-by-hour, when you have a thunderstorm, a staffing issue or anything like that. >> reporter: airports nationwide ramped up staffing and are taking measures to prepare for this holiday's rush, including at chicago's two airports. >> we're still certainly up from the pre-pandemic times. >> reporter: aaa says despite passengers paying 40% to 50%
6:09 am
more for flights, bookings are not slowing down. >> we know people are looking to take more generational trips with families, take some of those larger trips they maybe had to put off. so across the board it's a good sign, certainly, that travel is coming back. >> reporter: the summer travel season is off to a busy start. and aaa predicts that air travel will set a new record this independence day holiday. the previous record of more than 3.9 million air travelers, that was set back in 2019. >> wow, so back to pre-pandemic levels. brie, thanks so much. well, i want you to take a look at this. how beautiful is that? so our own scott budman delivering this beautiful photo of last night's full moon, a gorgeous sight. and the beautiful sights in the sky will continue today. we saw this morning the supermoon, which also is known as the buck moon. it's about 7% larger and 15%
6:10 am
brighter than a full moon. and if you weren't awake, driving at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. and you didn't catch it, we are scheduled to experience three more supermoons this summer. the next is on august 1st, then august 30th and then september 29th. >> i'm sure scott budman will capture all of them. he always takes the most amazing pictures. >> he really does. let's get a look at the clear skies that we're seeing across the bay area this morning. as you wake up and head out in san jose, maybe you're heading to work this morning or maybe if you have the day off, you're just relaxing and hanging out with us for a little while. our temperatures start out at 60 degrees and we can see the trend that it's still going to warm up today, but it just won't be as hot as it was yesterday afternoon, as we reach into the mid-80s. one thing you can check out is the marin county fair to enjoy some cooler temperatures, breezy winds, sunshine and our temperatures there reach into the mid-70s. in novato it's going to reach 81
6:11 am
today, these numbers are not in the upper 90s or over 100 degrees. 90 today for livermore, still hot in los gatos, reaching 91, san mateo reaching 75. we'll talk about the cooldown that continues in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at lower gas prices. >> i congratulate all of us, we're back on the leader board for the entire state. san jose represents the bay area with $3.99. it's the lowest price we have at 76 on redmon avenue. concord's best is $4.29, we're going to call out the costco on monument boulevard. in marin county, the same price, $4.29 at hq fuels in mill valley on shoreline highway. thank you for sharing your reports through gasbuddy.com. >> traffic flows smoothly. we have green sensors all around, no metering lights on at the bay bridge. this crash has been showing up, i want to show you surface

right now at 6:14, as you're making plans for this 3rd of july, we are still going to have some hot temperatures in some of our inland spots like brentwood. not as hot as it was over the weekend, but still dangerous heat with highs in the upper 90s. you're planning your day around those temperatures. we'll get a look at the fourth of july forecast in a few minutes. we're looking at some haze around the palo alto area. also, very little traffic on this portion of 101.
6:16 am
we're looking at no problems on this freeway, the bayshore moves smoothly. we may have an issue on university. we'll see what we can find from the camera. if there's something there, we'll show you coming up. wall street is set for a mixed open as the markets kick off the second half of the year. stocks are coming off of a stellar first six months, driven by gains in mega cap tech and everything related to artificial intelligence. in focus today, data on manufacturing and it's also just a half a day of trading ahead of the fourth of july holiday, with the markets closing at 10:00 a.m. pacific time. and new backlash from twitter users, this is after the social media giant over the weekend placed a temporary cap on the number of tweets users could view each day. over the weekend ceo elon musk tweeted unverified users could view a maximum of 600 posts per day, with verified twitter blue subscribers able to view 6,000. those numbers later moved to

valleys that were baking over the weekend. let's take a live look outside in san rafael, waking up to sunshine. it's nice that we do have cool mornings to help us cool off. we're going to see temperatures heating up in the valleys once again. for the alameda county fair over the weekend, it was over 100 degrees. if you're going today, how about 90? and we will have those fireworks or the drone show going on later this evening, so temperatures will be cooling off and nice weather there. we're closely watching san francisco, because this is always a spot that has to contend with low clouds and fog in time for the fireworks. it looks like that will be the case again. temperatures in the upper 50s. visibility may be an issue. we'll continue to monitor that as we get ready for those fireworks tomorrow night. and in oakland today, expect it to reach 75 degrees, really nice. but still pretty warm for some spots like the inland east bay, fairfield as well hitting 91 today. and once again, the cooldown
6:22 am
continues, just a few more degrees tomorrow. we'll all really start to feel that on wednesday as most people are heading back to work. so hayward reaching 73 and 75 in novato. what's happening here is the high pressure that brought that big spike in temperatures is moving away. we're going to see this low dropping down the coast, and for the pacific northwest it's going to be definitely cooler. but for us it brings back that ocean breeze and we may trend a little cooler than we typically see for this time of year. take a look at morgan hill. still hitting the low 90s today. look at the weekend. whatever you didn't get to do over this past weekend because it was too hot, plan for it this weekend. we're talking upper 70s and low 80s for the inland areas. for san francisco, we're going to see at times some low clouds and fog, but we're staying in the 60s near the coast. so far it seems like it's been pretty quiet? overall the freeways are moving nicely, off rout 109 or

temperatures starting out in the mid-50s and then headed for the mid-80s as we go into late morning into the early afternoon. we're still looking at highs reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s, but we're also going to have coastal temperatures in the 60s. we'll take a look at our fourth of july forecast coming up in just a few minutes. breaking news right now out of the east bay, where a struggle with law enforcement officers led to a deadly shooting. a short time ago authorities gave us their first update and "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live near that scene in san leandro. bob, what are they saying led to this deadly shooting? >> reporter: good morning to you, kira. this started as a car chase around 2:00 this morning on eastbound 580, chp saw a car that was speeding. they started chasing that car, and you can see in the video that car ended up crashing not too far from where we're at, they crashed at 163rd and liberty here in ashland, an
6:33 am
unincorporated part of san leandro. the car was stolen, there were three men inside, young men, they were all wearing ski masks. they ended up taking off on foot after the crash with that chp officer running after them. when they got a couple blocks down the street, two of the men attacked the officer, they tried to disarm him. around this time an alameda county sheriff's deputy also arrived on scene in response to the crash. according to the sheriff's office, that deputy and the chp officer fired several shots and they killed one of the men involved in the struggle with the chp officer. the other man was taken into custody. that's two of the people. there's the third that was still outstanding. deputies deployed a drone equipped with an infrared camera and they were able to detect the body heat of the third suspect hiding nearby and took him into custody as well. the chp officer and alameda county sheriff's deputy we believe were not hurt.
6:34 am
chp is investigating the crash. the alameda county sheriff's office is investigating the shooting. as is standard with an officer-involved shooting, the district attorney's office will be investigating the shooting. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob, for that update. new overnight for you, firefighters are trying to learn what caused a fire overnight in san jose. this happened near a homeless encampment a little before 4:00 a.m. it forced a closure of part of highway 87 due to smoke. now all lanes are open again. and we have new details this morning, pg&e crews appear to be making headway in restoring power that went out for thousands of bay area customers over the weekend. fewer than 50 customers are still impacted this morning. some larger outages are still an issue. last night the number surpassed 10,000. one of pg&e's largest outages
6:35 am
impacted central contra costa county. we spoke with the owner of a new fish store in orinda who was forced to purchase a generator to keep his fish alive and swimming. >> i was surprised that it happened, just because yesterday it was way hotter. i didn't expect something like this to happen today. >> yesterday's outage also knocked out power to the orinda theatre during the showing of the "indiana jones" movie that left about 160 moviegoers suddenly making other plans. new this morning, while the coming days may be calling you to the outdoors, there are some things that you really want to consider before you head out, especially in the east bay. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is here with lovely news from algae blooms to rattlesnakes. i'm going to try not to -- >> it's not a lot of our cup of
6:36 am
tee, but the weather has been hot and that means algae blooms are in effect and rattlesnakes are more active. don't let that stop you, though, from heading outdoors. just follow this advice from the east bay parks. they say avoid hiking alone, and as you are out and about stay on the trail and scan the ground ahead of you. keep your kids close and keep your dogs on a leash. if you see a snake on the trail, leave it alone and move away slowly. kira, don't run. [ laughter ] >> if a rattlesnake does bite, you will know it because of the sound, of course, and it will be really painful. you will have two puncture wounds and it will be an intense burning that you will feel. so in that case, stay calm, call 911, keep the bite lower than your heart. experts say don't waste time on tourniquets that you might have learned during your girl scout or boy scout days or trying to suck out the venom. just call 911. if you are bitten by another
6:37 am
kind of snake, it will be less painful, you'll want to wash it with soap and water and seek medical attention. if you were hoping to beat the heat, the swimming beach in oakland is closed, as well as niles swim area at fremont's horseshoe lake because of a blue-green algae bloom which can give you and your pets some serious tummy trouble, along with some rashes. you can swim at richmond's miller knox shoreline and livermore at the park, but don't swallow the water. rinse off as soon as you can so you don't get a rash. no need to call 911 if you feel sick, just call your doctor. we can expect more of this activity as the temperatures continue to be warm. they're coming down a few degrees, it's still hot, it's summer. >> it's best to find a pool. you were saying some of those risks, it sounded like a commercial for some of those new

drugs. risk of this, risk of that. >> death, yeah. >> friends at the pool might stop answering your phone calls after a while. >> i need a friend with a pool. >> look on google maps, the aerial view. >> show up with cookies. >> exactly. >> nice to meet you. can i go in your pool? thanks for the warnings, i guess. >> the outdoors is still good, definitely. >> thanks, kris. it's 6:37 this morning. developing right now out of baltimore, maryland, police are searching for the shooters at a saturday night block party. authorities are telling us they have identified two people who died, a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman. we're told up to 30 people were injured here, with three said to be critical. this all happened a little after midnight as neighbors gathered in a cul de sac. the mayor promising justice will be served. >> this was a reckless, cowardly
6:39 am
act of violence that has taken two lives and altered many, many more. and as i said earlier, we will find those who are responsible and we will not stop until we do so. >> the victims range in ages from 13 to 32 years old. police are still uncertain how many people fired. back here locally, a new closure to tell you about on highway 1 near big sur after a new sinkhole formed one mile south of nacimiento-fergusson road, anyone traveling through that area is advised to look for alternate routes. and now let's take a live look out in san jose with that sunrise looking beautiful this morning. summer is here. so is meteorologist kari hall with a look at that forecast for us. we're coming up on the fourth of july, a lot of folks want to get outside and enjoy. the weather should be enjoyable. >> it should be great this week.
6:40 am
i'm glad that we don't have to deal with that valley heat we had over the weekend. it's starting to look much nicer. we're seeing low clouds and fog in san francisco, beautiful way to start the day. here is one of the things you may want to check out today to enjoy the nice and mild weather. the marin county fair continues today, temperatures in the 70s throughout the afternoon, with a nice breeze and sunshine. just don't forget the sunscreen. for the inland valleys, we were dealing with triple digits over the weekend. how about 91 in fairfield today? it's better than what we had over the weekend, with san jose reaching 86 degrees. we're headed for 81 in santa rosa. tomorrow we'll see those numbers coming down a couple more degrees, but still pretty warm in the inland areas. then san francisco will continue to see highs in the mid-60s. we'll take a look at the rest of the forecast coming up. mike, you have a few things on your list. >> i do, very few incidents or

slower spots. we're looking pretty nice on the freeways. we don't have the metering lights on at the bay bridge. highway 37, highway 4, no sensors other than the green. we will look toward san francisco, north 280, around mariposa, we don't have a direction, reports of a disabled vehicle. chp hasn't talked about any problems. no lanes blocked from what i can tell and no slowing. just north of there, that's where we'll look ahead. there will be slowing perhaps around oracle park after work or maybe no work for some folks today. there's a game tonight and there will be crowds in the area and we'll watch for the pedestrians crossing back and forth from the ballpark there. in the north bay we had a parking lot that was closed since friday last week and it will continue until friday this week because of the king tides. there's oftentimes flooding that happens in lower parking lot. we're looking at the fog as
