>> and the record-high temperatures showing no sign of letting up more than 30 million americans facing heat alerts today some temperatures could reach as high as 120 degrees. >> and this coming after a weekend of record holiday travel that also saw nearly 25,000 flight delays. we will get to the holiday forecast let's start with nbc's blayne alexander. she's down in atlanta. the weather has been hot, hot, hot. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. you're right hot doesn't begin to cover it. on days like today, people are looking for any way to stay cool outside. here in atlant just looking at the fountain is really refreshing. but the weather has been giving us a one-two punch between the dangerous heat and the severe storms all of it comes as millions of passengers are taking to the skies and dealing with flight delays

already this morning, we have seen 400 flight delays all of this ahead of the very busy holiday from severe storms to scorching deadly heat. in these first few weeks of summer, mother nature has been unforgiving. this holiday weekend is no exception. in chicago, grant park's nascar street race came to an unexpected halt when record rain fall caused a delay. >> the amount of rain is severe that visibility would be nearly impossible and the standing water would be impossible to race in. >> in upstate work, a massive flood caused families to evacuate their homes while in st. louis, the storms turned deadly, uprooting a tree and killing a woman in her car and in alabama, winds top 60 miles an hour, knocking down trees, power lines and the canopy of this shaved ice business elsewhere, it's the heat that's taking the toll. the national weather service in

sacramento summed up the triple digit highs with a single word, hot. >> yeah. i do not like this heat. >> reporter: in arizona, nine counties are under an excessive heat warning through the 4th with tucson and phoenix expected to reach record setting highs. the heat and dry conditions are forcing some cities to spark a new tradition, opting for a 4th without fireworks. instead, drone flights. >> it's going to be put to patriotic music. >> reporter: it comes as a soaring number of travelers hit the skies. on frida the tsa screened 2.9 million passengers, the highest number ever in a single day for passengers on the nearly 25,000 delayed domestic flights over the weekend,'s been a turbulent ride at airport after airport, stranded luggage tells the frustrating story. >> and we just got to houston, and they can't find a captain or our plane. like i cannot do this anymore.

stronger storms tomorrow, shifting back into the northwest including minneapolis, including omaha. stretching into kansas, too. here's the setup we have the warm front move through. if you are on the east coast, you know how humid and stifling it feels then you have an approaching cold front there will be pop-up type thunderstorms, but keep an eye to the skies watch for dark cloud listen for the rumbles of thunder and get indoors until those storms pass because they could be severe. then the cold front will clear the area as we go into tomorrow. 4th of july looks better, less humid and lesser chance of storms as for rainfall, we could se three inches of rain across new england. and especially tomorrow with that second round of storms, we could see three inches of rain that could lead to flooding concerns, too. >> thank you so much we'll check in in a few minutes with the full forecast. also this morning, breaking news from the occupied west

bank israeli forces going after terrorist infrastructure attacking the palestinian city of jenin overnight folks there awakened b explosives, awakened by heavy gunfire. holly hunter has been following us overnight molly, what do we know at this point? >> reporter: it is one of the biggest raids we have seen in years in the northern occupied west bank. it has been the focal point for nightly israeli raids, craig it is one of the few places where there are organized palestinian militants. huge gunfights after the israeli military went in around 1:00 a.m. with 2,000 soldiers and dozens of armored vehicles, an drone strikes from the air to clear the way as they entered. the israeli military is calling this is a focused operation that could last one to three days last month we saw the first israeli drone strike in 20 years. today it marks another serious

escalation that the health ministry says eight people were killed most of those militants, dozens injured, many by live ammunition that death toll likely to raise becaus some of those issues very critical bulldozers were blocking main roads getting in and out we saw video of that making it hard for ambulances to reach the injured and evacuate the bodies of the victims a spokesperson this morning says if this aggression does not stop, the palestinian resistance will be announcing something shortly. we are watching these next few hours closely. >> this operation could last one to three days. what should we be looking out for in the next coming weeks is there a chance we see this violence escalate? >> reporter: yes we are watching prime minister netanyahu very closely netanyahu has been under serious pressure from the right-wing factions of his government to

launch a serious full-scale invasion in the occupied west bank is this the start of something much bigger? the other thing we're watching for in the next couple of hours is that gaza border. will they fire rockets into southern israel? we are all over this story. >> molly, thank you. we want to turn to another tragic mass shooting at home this one in baltimore over the weekend at a holiday block party.nd 20s. two people are dead and more than two dozen are injured. nbc's george solis is in baltimore with the latest on this. george, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, kristin. a lot of heart break and frustration this morning. an 18-year-old woman and 20-year-old man dead as a result of the shooting. also upsetting to many members of this community, half of those wounded are just teens. police continue to investigate as the search for answers is just beginning. in baltimore this morning, heartbreak after violence ripped through a community block party.

>> i got another gunshot victim unresponsive. >> reporter: the celebration descending into chaos as gunfire erupted. this 18-year-old killed and this 20 -year-old killed in the attack that shorts say left 28 others wounded. half of the victims under the age of 18. >> we don't know if they were targeted or if they were just shooting indiscriminately down the street. >> reporter: a manhunt is underway for the shooter. >> we will not stop until we find you, and we will find you. >> she was shot there. shot somewhere up here. she just kept screaming. i just rushed through this. i have children, and i would have wanted somebody to do that for my child if she was in dire need like that. >> reporter: a short time later another mass shooting in wichita, kansas. 7 people wounded in a nightclub. all are expected to survive and police have one suspect in

custody. there have been a staggering number of mass shootings this year. 338. >> this is a societal problem that we're dealing with. this is insanity. this cannot, cannot be the society that we are expected to live in. >> reporter: baltimore's weekend shooting now the second highest victim count so far this year. >> enough is enough with this. we're losing our children. these are babies. we're losing them to gun violence. >> reporter: now, police say they believe there may have been at least two shooters. still no word on a motive or suspect. many in this community say this is an annual event that typically draws a large police presence. why that didn't happen this go-around police say will be part of an ongoing investigation. >> so painful we are talking about yet another mass shooting. thank you so much for that. police in washington, d.c., are searching for a suspect this morning after three businesses were damaged by explosive

devices. surveillance cameras capturing the suspect, as you can see there, wearing a light-colored hoodie and black pants. police are looking for that gold colored acura. a bank, a shoe store and a super market were all hit early yesterday. fortunately all three businesses were closed. also fortunately no one was hurt. we want to turn to washington where sharp division is growing over recent supreme court rulings. hot button issues related to gay rights, college admissions and student loans all in the spotlight. and republicans with their eyes on 2024 applauding the court's decisions from the campaign trail. senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell is live at the white house with more. kelly, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, kristin. some of those notable issues that closed out the term for the supreme court are right on the fault line of american politics, highlighting divisions among the parties, candidates, and

bay. authorities confirm with us one person is dead, two suspects are now in custody. investigators say the shooting was the result of a physical confrontation after a car chase involving three people. the incident led to street closures at two locations in san leandro near interstate 580. and firefighters are still trying to learn what sparked an overnight fire in san jose. this happened near a homeless encampment a little before 4:00 in the morning. briefly it forced closure for part of highway 87 due to smoke. lanes are back open now. meteorologist kari hall is here with our july 3rd forecast. >> it's looking much cooler than what we had over the weekend, so instead of seeing highs in the upper 90s and up to 100 degrees, it's going to reach 90 today. so it's still pretty warm but the comfortable air continues to roll in as we go throughout the week. the fourth of july, we'll head for about 85 degrees. look at the end of the week with

plaza. a lot of folks will celebrate the 4th of july in the city, taking advantage of the long weekend. we will get outside for a minute. >> looking forward to saying hello to them. they're fired up about the fireworks. >> we are less than 24 hours away from the fourth a lot of americans will be packing beach bags, heading to the water. but a recent group of shark attacks has officials on high ls alert. in miami sam brock has more on this. >> reporter: good morning. it is definitely worth pointing out it is exceedingly rare for there to be an unprovoked sharp -- shark attack. one marine biologist sai the odds of it are like winning the lottery. but as you point out, craig, there has been roughly three of them in a week that includes a 12-year-old girl that needed 50 stitches and a

paddle boarder who was followed by a hammerhead shark. for all the fun and frolics at beaches nationwide, sharks. >> i really like going to the beach, especially with my family and it is kind of scary the fact of the shark attacks happening we stay in a group we don't go as far. >> reporter: despite the highly unlikely shark scenario, there were only 41 unprovoked shark attacks in the u.s. all of last year. florida has been struck by three incidents in a little over a week that includes this 12-year-old visiting from philadelphia who foun a shark latched on to her leg, requiring 50 stitches. >> it hurts like incredibly bad. it was really, really painful. and i wasn't expecting it. it was so scary. >> reporter: and a freaky following. >> come to the side. >> reporter: whose 80-mile

just about anywhere. since 2013, the average number of unprovoked bites is 74. guys, that's a number we have been below the last couple of years. this year we're on pace to beat that. >> sam, if you are going to head into the water at some point this summer, anything you can do to scan for sharks >> reporter: yeah. there is a few things that are actually common sense, but you should definitely do stay in clear water so the sharks can see better. if you see fish jumping or birds diving, it means there could be a predator lurking nearby. try to avoid swimming near piers. or areas where people are fishing. that, too, can attract the bait. but guys, the smithsonian and expert say the odds of a shark seeing you and passing you is 99.9% so you and your family should feel safe this weekend. >> my favorite tip for surviving a shark attack, stay out of the

and fury 325 and all of its rides undergo daily inspections. >> how did it get to this point and people are on that ride. >> reporter: it is putting the spotlight on ride safety just as amusement parks are starting the summer visitor crush last year, this 14-year-old fell out of a drop tower seat and died in orlando. but despite the harrowing incident, the president of premier ride says safety measures are rigorous. >> the same types of tools used in aerospace engineering are used in the theme park industry. >> reporter: for jeremy wagner, he says his family won't be worried to get back on when it is fixed. >> i would like to think there are safety protocols and fixing the issue would be secure enough >> reporter: nbc news reached out about that photo taken in late june, but they did not late june, but they did not directly address it.

>> reporter: gary adler is the director and counsel for ticket brokers. what are some red flags when it comes to ticket scams? >> the big thing is for people to do their homework make sure they're buying for a reputable reseller do your homework on pricing the tickets. >> reporter: use a credit card instead of a peer-to-peer payment app and ask if they reseller offer a return policy. a 200% money back guarantee. >> double your money back. >> reporter: before clicking buy, popular sites like stub hub, vivid seats and seat geek offer money back guarantees. >> if you are hesitant about it, go with your gut. >> reporter: erica learned the lesson a hard way after sh and her cousin tried to buy tickets to see suga. while the social media site prohibits the sale of unauthorized tickets, someone was offering two tickets for

$440 she agreed to transfer the money through zelle. >> they actually sent video of the tickets on ticketmaster, so they seemed legit. >> reporter: after they sent the funds, she and her cousin were blocked by the seller. they never received the tickets. >> i lost the money, and now i can't go to the concert. >> reporter: they reported it to zelle. 2 it doesn't offer a protection program. the company recommending sending money only to friends, family and others that you know and trust. other expert tips when buying resell tickets, avoid ads. don't click on the first search result you see only work with sellers who share the location of seats before the purchase s you can verify they exist at the venue. also, check the date and time on the tickets. and if you can't have immediate access to them, make sure the sellers discloses when they will ship or when you can pick them up advice to help you shake it off when it comes to scams and if you, unfortunately, do fall for a scam, you should
