every year, so sometimes we get lucky. sometimes we don't. >> repor >> reporter: new york city's iconic macy's july 4th fireworks still hoping to light up the skies. they've done shows in the rain, we will determine what steps to take in the event of severe weather. meanwhile, 31 million americans are sweating it out with heat alerts impacting parts of the south and west temps topping 100 degrees. cities like las vegas and phoenix, again triple digits today. the extreme temperatures fueling fast-moving flames in washington state. with fears that risk of wild fire may increase during july 4th celebration. >> i'm south about five feet. >> in salt lake city, the first time they're replacing fireworks with a drones show flagstaff, arizona, a laser light show takes the place of

conventional pyrotechnics. the american spirit will find a way to spirit on the nation's birthday no matter what happens. >> it's the whole month. it's the whole year that we are the best country in the world. >> reporter: while mild air quality alerts will linger in the midwest and los angeles, here in new york city, air quality has finally returned to healthy levels after days of hazy skies from those canadian wild fires new york's governor encouraging people to enjoy and celebrate outdoors we'll just have to see to what degree the rain allows craig? >> emily, thank you. all right. and now everyone with the day off for the holiday wants to know, let's talk about the weather. dylan is in for al happy fourth. >> it is going to stay hot across much of the country, but it's the storminess that really affect yours plans outside we're going to see a line of storms develop after the midwest. also in the northeast, kind of like yesterday, you look outside. oh, the sun is out oh, it's pouring oh, there's a thunderstorm it's just going to be that cycle all day long today in the

northeast. but back from minneapolis, right back into denver, that's where we have our best chance today. especially this afternoon and evening of those storms developing that could produce wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour we could see hail an inch or more in diameter a low threat of tornadoes. it's really the wind and hail that's the biggest concern then tomorrow that whole threat shifts slightly farther to the east this time around including chicago, back to kansas city, dodge city, still includes denver, too. again, with this cold front moving east ward, it's just slowly going to bring these storms through the minneapolis area later this afternoon into tonight. so if there's fireworks in those towns around minneapolis, st. paul, keep that in mind. we'll likely get those storms right in time for the fireworks and that cold front moves to the east into chicago. because it's so humid, when it does rain, it rains a lot. we could see several inches of rain back to the midwest as much as three inches is possible in some areas >> thank you we'll get the full forecast in just a minute. philadelphia, the city reeling from a mass shooting overnight.

aheavily armed gunman wearing a bullet proof vest mowing people down in a residential neighborhood, killing five and injuring two children, including a toddler. nbc's george solice is in philadelphia with the very latest. >> reporter: good morning, craig. details still emerging as this investigation just begins. police initially saying four men were killed while a 2-year-old and a 13-year-old were injured we knew this morning authorities saying a fifth man was found dead they also believe is connected to this mass shooting. >> reporter: this morning, yet another community in america reeling from a mass shooting after a gunman opened fire in philadelphia shooting seven people, killing five and injuring two children police say the suspect was armed with an ar-15 style weapon handgun, carrying a police skaern and wearing a bullet proof vest

the suspect still firing as police were at the scene. >> as they were scooping up the victims and preparing them for transport to the hospital, they also heard multiple gunshots up the street. >> reporter: officers chasing down the suspect, finally cornering him in an alley. >> he was taken into custody without further incident. >> reporter: investigators say they currently do not have a motive for the shootings and do not know if the suspect is connected to any of the victims. police also taking a second person into custody. wshlgs we have another person that we believe acquired a gun somehow. don't know how, and returned fire in the direction of the shooter that we have in custody. >> reporter: this incident comes just one day after two automatic shootings in baltimore where a community block party descended into chaos as gunfire erupted killing two and injuring more than two dozen others. and in wichita, kansas, nine people shot and wounded at a nightclub. back in philadelphia, the mayor

israel's right to self-defense, but saying it is imperative to take all possible precautions to prevent the loss of civilian lives. >> molly, thank you. also this morning, some encouraging news for the american journalist who has been detained in a russian prison for more than three months now the u.s. ambassador to russia was able to visit him for the first time yesterday since april. nbc's kelly cobiella is in the eastern part of ukraine where the war with russia continues to rage kelly, first of all, any progress from that meeting >> reporter: well, craig, this was a significant development for evan gershkovich after the russians repeatedly denied access to the reporter the state department confirming that the u.s. ambassador to russia was able to see gershkovich yesterday. she said he's in good health and remains strong despite the circumstances. the state department adding that

>> reporter: hey, craig. well, it might be a bit alarming for the beach goers here at robert moses beach one of the attacks took place here the sign says swimming prohibited that's because the life guards aren't yet on duty this is one of the most popular beaches, public beaches in the new york city area it is likely going to be crowded later today. and this story could give beach goers pause. this morning fresh shark fears off the coast of new york, prompting new warnings for beach goers heading out to celebrate the july 4th holiday. >> shark attack at the life guard station. rescue has been notified. >> reporter: two incidents happening just seven miles apart. on monday, long island police responded to calls of a shark attack on fire island. police say a 15-year-old boy was surfing when he was bitten, puncturing his left heel and toes >> he was able to swim to shore where a good samaritan was ready

have to worry about it. >> is that for all pies? >> yeah. it is the best way to do it. absolutely take your butter and lightly toss it into the flour that will start coating it in. >> what kind of flour is that? >> just regular, all purpose flour. and then i'm going to use some buttermilk. >> of course you are. >> can you throw a little at a time just a little bit. >> and why do we do a little bit at a time? >> because you want to bring the dough together, okay, start forming a ball. >> so you make your own crust? >> oh, yeah. >> i could eat the crust all by itself >> now, if you don't have time to make it -- >> crust alone >> thank you come in to make a ball, okay then we're going to move on from that but you get -- when i start to make a ball, create a disk. >> a disk. >> uh-huh. and then you want to wrap it and refrigerate it two hours overnight to get it nice and chill. then when you get it nice and chill, then you start rolling it out.

it is a process. and then you want to roll it out to about a quarter inch thick. that will give you weight that holds the pie together. >> how do you know you've rolled it enough? >> i like to tell people just feel the pie all the way through and lift it up and look. look at that >> that's beautiful. >> do you see the thickness on there? then the next thing you want to do is it is time to put it inside the oven. >> what's the verdict, boys and girls? >> what do you think >> so many delicious things happening at once. >> so you want to start with dragging a little over your pie tin and rolling it right in. >> you're artist. >> you know what i mean. >> you have to get to the filling now. this is delicious. >> yep. >> i see we have blue berries. >> and then we put that in fresh blueberries, either one. you can use frozen put your blueberries in there. put your sugar and a little salt was in there you want to give that a little mix. >> how long are we cooking that? >> cook that until you get to a rapid boil once you get to a rapid boil, what i have here is corn starj slurry mix that in and that thickens

it. >> what is is that >> corn starch with water mixed together and that thickens it up once that boils. you'll see it come together and thickening then let it cool down. and then voila we have this. >> the magic of television >> next up, get your crumb topping because what's a pie without a top? in here, we already have brown sugar, cinnamon spices. >> brown sugar >> brown sugar. >> that was sheinelle's nickname in high school >> put a little melted butter in there, give it a good stir you want to give it a good stir. then look up for pea-size. you want to go between -- think a dime and a quarter are the size of the crumbs then when you get to your pie crust, i did a reverse crumb right here do you like that craig, do you like that? >> i love blueberry everything >> this is amazing >> this is why you're a james beard semitimist >> you could also use a fork to decorate your pie crust. you want to fill it up. >> that crumb topping.
