illegal fireworks lit up the skies in several parts of the bay area in bay area neighborhoods. what firefighters are saying about the possible links to late-night fires. this is "today in the bay." wednesday, july 5th, the day after the 4th. >> i put ear plugs in, finally, at 10:00. >> i tried and it didn't work. the fireworks were vibrating the walls. >> boom. what? >> did you block your alarm clock? >> i thought they would fall out. i slept very well. it was really nice sleeping weather. >> it's nice to not have the blasting air-conditioning. we're starting out nice and

cool. i want to show you the forecast in belmont, right now in the mid-50s, it's going to eventually clear out and reach into the upper 60s by late morning into the afternoon. a lot of our peninsula temperatures are going to reach into the 60s and 70s for today. you head across the bay to oakland and it's going to reach 69 for a high this afternoon, while livermore will see a high of 82. we're in the upper 70s in san jose. still cooler than normal temperatures continue today and tomorrow, as well as the end of the week. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, so far everything looks calm. >> it is calm. we don't have slowing right here in san jose. i did see slowing sensors for a couple of minutes. we're looking for the source of the traffic, which sometimes originates in san martin and that has been going on heading toward morgan hill for quite some time, starting just south and making its way into the south bay. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we have this backup. another crash just past this

around the metering lights did happen on the right shoulder. the activity is off of the lanes. that may have slowed down the metering lights further and that may be why we see a bigger backup. another change from earlier this week, we have slowing on vasco road and on 580 out of the altamont pass. so there is more traffic out there for you. back to you. >> thanks, mike. lots of people across the bay area, us included, still talking about the fourth of july fireworks that we saw and heard last night. you can be sure not all of the fireworks were legal. in fact, illegal fireworks are being linked to several incidents, not to mention keeping early birds and pets awake late into the night. "today in the bay"'s ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. ginger, no matter where you were, you probably heard them last night. we were just talking about how i had to sleep with ear plugs in. how did you sleep? >> reporter: i was going to say, i wish i borrowed some of those ear plugs, if you had extra lying around.

it was tough. you could definitely hear them if you didn't see them. my kids had some terrible sleep, even staying asleep, because wherever you were you did have a big chance of hearing those big fireworks from our part of san francisco last night. this was the scene, some of those illegal fireworks. once the sun went down it felt like the fireworks went up. at one point you just had to choose which direction to look and you'll see a fireworks display. this is also video from san francisco last night. take a look at this. this is a rapid fire show from the mission district. now, it's shooting off fireworks from a handheld tube and you can see that person is in the middle of the road, just shooting off fireworks from that handheld tube. it continues for nearly 30 seconds after the video starts. pretty incredible stuff there. across the bay bridge, this was

the view from nbc bay area sky ranger over oakland. all over the city you can see colors flying, obviously those are not legal. anyone caught with illegal fireworks faces a $1,000 fine. police and fire departments have been trying to crack down on illegal fireworks leading up to the fourth of july, but obviously it was not that easy. this is also from last night, some ground video from a fire burning in walnut creek. contra costa fire says this likely started from illegal fireworks near whitecliff way. the good news is that crews were able to stop forward progress and no one had to evacuate. if you listen to some of the advice that was put out there for those who left the work up to the professionals, they were not disappointed in san francisco. the weather cleared up just enough for almost a full half hour of spectacular fireworks along the city's waterfront. now, thousands came out.

some for the first time to enjoy those rockets blasting from barges in the water. they exploded in the air and left a trail of color and magnificence. the pyrotechnics team had to adjust the height of the fireworks to work around the fog layer, but the good news, it worked. >> i love it. it's my first time. i'm enjoying it so far. >> just enjoy the show. >> reporter: well, as of last night, no big security reports from where the fireworks show was. there was a bit of trouble getting out of the city after so many people came to see the fireworks. but this morning we'll be seeing the cleanup from the aftermath. we'll be keeping an eye out for that. >> thank you very much, ginger. well, developing right now, multiple people are injured

after a late-night gunfire at a home in hayward. it happened about 10:30. this is when some fourth of july events were still going strong. now, our nbc bay area sky ranger was able to capture some of the aftermath. take a look at this. this is at that home on ranker place. this is also near saint rose hospital. police will only confirm several people were shot. all are expected to survive. so far, there's no word about possible motives or potential suspects. breaking news this morning out of louisiana where three people were killed in a shooting, six others injured near shreveport. this is new video just into our newsroom and you can see a lot of police investigating on the scene. so far, no word on a motive or how this came about, or possible suspects. and it's not just hayward and shreveport. police in washington, d.c. say nine people were injured last night in a drive-by shooting,

and philadelphia and dallas fort worth reeling after deadly mass shootings over the holiday weekend. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson is live in washington. i understand the president is even responding to this. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. good morning, marcus, kris. president biden is once again urging congress to do something to strengthen gun laws after a spat of mass shootings during the extended fourth of july weekend. a violent and deadly july 4th weekend across america. >> everybody use caution, we've still got somebody out there firing shots. >> reporter: five people were killed and two children injured in philadelphia monday night. police are using this surveillance video as part of their investigation. authorities say the 40-year-old suspect, wearing body armor, walked down the street with an ar-15-style rifle and a handgun, firing randomly.

manufacturers' immunity from liability. marcus, kris. >> brie jackson in washington this morning, thank you. happening today, students supporting affirmative action plan to hold a protest at stanford. organizers tell us students from at least seven northern california schools do plan to attend. the rally is happening in reaction to last week's supreme court ruling which overturned affirmative action used in deciding admissions at colleges and universities. this rally is scheduled to begin at 4:00 this afternoon. 6:09, we take a live look out in san jose. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the temps for us today. and, kari, what are we looking at today? >> a nice view this morning of san jose. starting out with a few breaks in the clouds. it's going to clear out quickly. let's head to morgan hill with a look at how the morning will shape up, mid-50s to start. you do need a jacket for now. it's going to warm up as we head toward late morning into the afternoon. overall a really comfortable day compared to what we had recently

lights. so far, a consistent backup at the toll plaza. a number of reports coming from the south bay. we'll sort some of those out coming up. that is a big traffic jam. good morning. happy wednesday to you. despite all that traffic, should be a fairly light week for the stock market. many companies here in silicon valley have the whole week off. we get the minutes from the latest recent fed meeting today, where they talked about interest rate hike pauses. a federal judge in louisiana has issued an order restricting the biden administration from contacting social networks to influence what those networks do and do not allow online. the order comes from the district court of western louisiana, but has effect nationwide. the judge says the cdc, health and human services and fbi should not talk with social networks like twitter and facebook about, quote, encouraging, pressuring or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression or reduction of content containing protected free

speech. now, in the past, various agencies like the surgeon general have worked with social networks over false claims about vaccines, though far short of the coordinated effort some conservatives, including elon musk, have claimed. but this is one of those rare situations where the claims of the right to free speech actually apply. most of the time when people get their posts taken down, they claim it violates their first amendment rights, but twitter doesn't have to respect your first amendment rights. they're not a government. but the case in front of the federal judge, the government allegedly tried to influence twitter, so that is a first amendment issue. treasury secretary janet yellen will head to china this week. the u.s. is both trying to tighten ties between america and china, but at the same time further restrict china's access to technology. the "wall street journal" reports the commerce department is considering new restrictions on china's access to cloud

computing, like amazon web services. facebook is set to release its threads app tomorrow. this is supposed to be similar to twitter. there have been a lot of twitter knockoffs like blue sky. lots of people are eager to find a twitter alternative. they don't like twitter the way they used to. the problem is these little tiny startups aren't ready for that many people to move from twitter. so you get on some waiting list and you kind of forget about it. but meta, they can handle it. so we'll see. >> i heard one was in a bait da beta form. >> it's one of those where the line is too long. i think meta will be able to handle it. >> we'll see. i just downloaded it. we'll see what it looks like tomorrow. i went to the app store and said put me on the list. i didn't get waved in. i'm not an "it" girl. new this morning, an urgent

call for blood donations, because summer is what hospital workers call trauma season. the nonprofit blood bank is urging people to donate because this is when donations are at the lowest point because some people are heading out of town. also, at the same time t blood is at a premium because there are more injuries as we head out for outdoor activities. >> here in the bay area we need at least 500 donations per day to help meet the needs of local patients. whether one person needs blood more than another person, or if they can wait. those are choices we don't want doctors ever to make so we're encouraging everyone to take the time, donate blood. >> as he said, we need 500 donations here in the bay area, so if you want to be one of those 500, the group is setting up a mobile unit at westfield oakridge shopping center on blossom hill road.

san jose. we are going to get sunshine. as you're heading out for your morning walk in foster city, it's going to be mostly cloudy for the next hour or two and temperatures going from the upper 50s to the upper 60s. and eventually reaching the low 70s today. martinez will hit a high of 75. these numbers look so nice. hopefully you have a chance to make plans to get outside and take a lot of this cooler weather in. especially for the inland valleys that had to deal with sweltering heat over the weekend. 78 in livermore and 78 as well in concord. in the north bay, we're looking at upper 70s and low 80s on friday. as we go through the next ten days, we are going to settle into a cooler than normal weather pattern. we don't always get this for early july. but then look ahead, there will be some heat starting to ramp up by the end of next week. so take a look at the seven-day forecast. our inland temperatures will stay in the 70s through at least saturday and only 80 on sunday. but then it will start to jump

nbc bay area responds to an east bay man whose brought outlook for solar panels went dim. >> he went months trying to spark action and turned to consumer investigator chris chmura's team for a jolt >> good morning. darren in castro valley paid better earth about $60,000 for that solar panel system. he says a few months after installation the panels started producing less power than promised so his electric bills were higher than expected.

and in novato expect it to reach a high of about 75. in dublin, 79, all of these numbers cooler than what we've had recently. and this cool air hangs around for a while. we'll get a look at that and the rest of the week's forecast coming up in just a few minutes. new overnight, the streets were taken over by that side show in the east bay. >> in this case, on top of the fireworks, law enforcement really had their hands full. "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live this morning in the east bay where it took some time for the police officers to break up all of that. that looked like it could have been really dangerous and scary out there. >> reporter: correct. we don't know of anyone being hurt, but it's very dangerous, illegal activity. this taking place in antioch. we gave you a glimpse of the video. this is video into the newsroom. there was a large crowd of people in the area of lone tree

way and blue rock drive in antioch. you can see they were watching the cars burn rubber and spin out in a dangerous activity known as a side show. we spoke with a deputy chief from con fire who tells us this went on for an hour and 20 minutes until antioch police finally arrived and broke it up. we have reached out to antioch police to see if they've made any arrests and get their take on what happened. people were setting off illegal fireworks. at one point someone set fire to debris in the middle of the road. con fire says firefighters at station 82, which is nearby that side show, they actually had to find another way to respond to an unrelated call because the side show was blocking their normal route. and it was a busy night for firefighters. con fire says they respond to do 58 fires last night, including this brush fire that they tweeted out pictures of. of those 58 fires, 50 were fireworks related, according to

con fire, and one person was also seriously injured by fireworks last night, according to the fire agency. reporting live in the east bay, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> tough night for all those firefighters. thank you so much, bob. it wasn't just there. new overnight, that long night for a lot of more bay area firefighters who had little room to rest. san jose teams responding to dozens of 911 calls last night. here is video of a install grass fire near harry road. firefighters were able to keep it from spreading. but in san jose firefighters had their hands full as well with this grass fire at bailey and santa teresa road. in this case, close to 40 acres burned. no structures were damaged here. now, for the north and alameda county, firefighters tackling a grass fire in castro valley. six acres burned here. the cause of each of those fires

still not clear. and we do know illegal fireworks lit up the skies in parts of the bay area, in neighborhoods. here is a view from nbc bay area sky ranger over oakland. you can see the colorful flashes flying above much of the city. none of this legal. violators could face fines up to four figures. check out the cameras in san francisco, what they caught. you see right here in the mission district, someone there shooting off fireworks from that tube in the middle of the road, and it continued for at least 30 minutes there. >> that is such a bad idea. a fan stabbed during a chaotic scene inside levi's stadium is speaking out. emmanuel diaz believes that he easily could have died when he was stabbed sunday during the gold cup match at levi's stadium. he says the knife just missed his heart and neck.

it happened when he and his friends got into a heated brawl which surrounding fans captured on video. here are his words translated from his hospital bed. >> reporter: he explains right now he's focusing on his recovery, but his attacker had the clear intention to kill him and he wants justice. >> police are looking for the two people on your screen. the man there they're calling a suspect, the woman, a person of interest. doctors do expect that diaz will make a full recovery. it is not clear at this point how somebody was able to make it past stadium security with a knife that size. we will continue to bring you the latest both on air and online. you can watch the full interview right now at nbcbayarea.com. happening today in the south bay, the man police say mma star cane velazquez targeted in a shooting returns to court. the judge may set a trial gate

for harry goularte, who has pleaded not guilty to molesting a child related to velasquez. velasquez out on bail awaiting his own trial. investigators believe he shot into a truck, injuring one of goularte's relatives also in the vehicle. this was early last year. bay area family members are fearing the worst for their loved one last seen sunday afternoon in yosemite national park. hayden klemenok was backpacking with other people near a waterfall when he disappeared. nbc bay area spoke briefly last night with his father, who tells us the search mission is now a recovery mission. klemenok grew up in the north bay and played baseball at santa rosa junior college. let's take a live look at the bay this morning. at 8:30 this morning, listen up, sausalito's mayor will start a chilly and challenging journey. she plans to swim from angel

island, one of my favorite places to hike, to her home city for a good cause. the mayor is actually raising money to repair sausalito's popular sea lion statue, which sustained storm damage over the winter. she's actually an experienced distance swimmer, so don't try this at home. she's already conquered the english channel. >> it looks likening land out there. that's chilly. we know the water is going to be cold and it looks gloomy. >> the water temperature is at about 51 degrees right now and the air temperature, only a few degrees warmer. >> she's experienced, though. good luck to her. >> absolutely. we're seeing low clouds and fog in san francisco. that's going to linger for a while today. but it was nice that it lifted enough for those fireworks last night, and then we're going to continue to see the fog rolling by today. it's also only going to go from upper 50s now to low 60s into the early afternoon, with that

breezy ocean air transporting inland, and it's going to even cool it off in spots like pleasant hill. so you're in the upper 50s as well, that marine layer moving in. once it clears out we'll see some breezy winds, sunshine and temperatures there reaching into the upper 70s for this afternoon. we'll talk about the cooldown continuing coming up. mike, you're seeing slowing and what's coming up later. >> we'll get a little chance for predictive traffic. we'll have some slowing which we anticipate over there. south 880 coming toward hayward, more traffic than the first couple of days this week. not as much as a typical wednesday. the san mateo crossing is just fine over the bay. we'll get a chance to look in the south bay and tell you about a concert at shoreline amphitheater there will be congestion off the exit that takes you to amphitheater parkway. that's about the same time the giants play, they start an hour earlier in the city, but there will be congestion before and after the game.

white powder found in a common area of the white house has tested positive for cocaine. >> the president and his family were not home at the time, but it's still a headache for the president. >> it certainly is. good morning. it was a preliminary field test done by the secret service according to a source familiar with the investigation. no indication who that drug may belong to. it was found in a common work area in the west wing. now, keep in mind nearly 2,000 people work directly for the white house, upward of 500 at a time in the west wing. president biden not there when the powder was discovered. he was at camp david. it actually led to a brief evacuation of the white house. this is video of the bidens hosting a fourth of july barbecue. more about the discovery ahead on the "today" show. >> reporter: lab tests are being done but a field test came back positive for cocaine. this bag was found in a common area of the west wing, where many employees and guests pass

forecast. it's nice to have a break in the valleys after a very hot weekend. this upcoming weekend won't be anything like what we just had to experience. so you may be wondering, when is the heat coming back? it is july, after all. as we take a look at santa rosa, we're going from low 70s to upper 70s for the weekend. look at that for the middle of next week. 90s will be back in the forecast. we know it's coming eventually. as we settle into the 70s, enjoy it the next several days into the weekend. san francisco keeping the clouds and fog and the cooler weather there, but highs in the mid-60s. mike, do you think the bay bridge is looking a little better? >> yeah, i do. i know it's kind of -- well, inches instead of feet because a lot of times i'll look at this and go, look, there's movement. but i have seen from time to time all of these lanes go back to just about mid-parking lot. i think they may have slowed the

metering lights a bit. i've seen slowing, which typically happens after a holiday. we see the early commute kick in stronger and then things ease off a little later. we do have slowing that showed up in walnut creek 680 southbound, but it happens to be smoothing out. back to you. >> thank you very much. happening now, bay area rents are the lowest they've been in three years, according to realtor.com, which finds the median costs are down 4%. researchers also found that rental prices are falling across the bay area, but the bay area is one of the most expensive places to rent, with costs higher than they were before the pandemic. same report forecasts that rents will continue to decline about 1% over the rest of the year. next, a quick look at top stories, including that breaking news out of louisiana. another mass shooting. this happening during fourth of july celebrations. what police are revealing about that investigation.

6:56. welcome back. we are moving you forward this morning with a look at our top stories on "today in the bay." >> three people are dead, six more are injured after a mass shooting in shreveport, louisiana. this is video just into our newsroom. there was a massive police response, but so far no word on a motive or possible suspects. the "today" show will continue coverage of that violent holiday weekend we saw in moments. that's coming up right after "today in the bay." multiple people injured after late-night gunfire at a home in hayward. this happened about 10:30 when fourth of july events were still going strong. you can see nbc bay area sky ranger was able to catch the aftermath of the home on ranker place near saint rose hospital. police will only confirm several people were shot and all are expected to survive. so far, there's no word about possible motives or potential suspects.

new overnight, the streets were taken over by that side show in the east bay, and firefighters say it went on for almost 90 minutes until antioch police arrived on scene. we have reached out to police to see if they made any arrests. people could also be seen setting off illegal fireworks at one point. someone setting fire to debris near an intersection nearby, and firefighters say some first responders on other 911 calls had to detour because of that side show street closure. con fire says crews responded to 58 fires last night, all but two of them, they believe, were sparked by fireworks. illegal fireworks lit up the skies in some bay area neighborhoods. here is a view from nbc bay area sky ranger over oakland. you can see the colorful flashes above much of the city. none of them legal. violators face fines that could reach four figures. firefighters say illegal fireworks likely started a grass fire in walnut creek.

this is near whitecliff way. they did get to it in time before it caused any major damage. firefighters in san jose also had a long night after several 911 calls. this one is a small grass fire they put out near harry road. they did keep it from spreading. near south san jose firefighters had their hands full with a grass fire at bailey and santa teresa roads. in that case, almost 40 acres burned. no structures were involved, though. in alameda county, firefighters tackled a grass fire in castro valley, there six acres burned. the cause of each of these fires is not fully clear. >> good thing we didn't have strong winds. that's scary. we are going to have more of a breeze the next few days, cooling our temperatures down. for the inland areas, we're looking at upper 70s. a little cooler than we usually see for july. as the fog continues in san francisco, we may also get mist and drizzle into the wen.
