strike, as other parts of the country today braced for more severe weather. mother nature lit up the nation's skies as millions from coast to coast dealt with a holiday full of extreme heat and severe storms. from the rockies to the east coast, scatters storms disrupted a host of independence day facilities, clearing out a beach in new jersey and pausing the hot dog eating contest. nearby, the new york fire department reporting two people were rushed to the hospital after a lightening strike. out west it was the scorching heat that put a damper on plans, fuelling wild fires in washington and arizona and canceling some nearby 4th of july events. at the nation's airports, more than 450 canceled. at one point, there were ground stops at all three of new york city's major airports adding to a week of travel chaos amid

took to the roads and skies earlier this month. pack your patience. >> just breathe. >> yeah. thank you. dylan is tracking where the storms are next. good morning to you. >> you said breathe. with the humidity out there, it is actually a little difficult. it is a very, very heavy feeling outside. because of that, we have the pop-up thunderstorms that will continue. most of the activity will be west of the plains and extending into the upper midwest and it will eventually move into the chicago area, st. louis, including amarillo, tulsa. hail could be an inch or more in diameter. tornadoes not as likely as these storms. ahead of it, it is hot and humid up and down the east coast. temperatures well up into the 90s. combine that with a cold front and we have a chance of thunderstorms. heat advisories through the west coast, through oklahoma and texas. up state new york, too, expecting those hot, hot

at a home in hayward. it happened about 10:30 when some fourth of july events were still going strong. nbc bay area sky ranger caught the aftermath at that home on ranker place near saint rose hospital. police at this point only confirming that several people were shot and that all are expected to survive. so far, no word on possible motive or potential suspects. illegal fireworks shows lighting up the skies across the bay area last night. this is a view from nbc bay area sky ranger over oakland. all over the city you could see colors just flying in the sky. obviously not legal. anyone caught with these could face up to $1,000 fine, as well as jail time. police and fire departments have been trying to crack down on illegal fireworks, leading up to the fourth of july celebrations, but obviously not so easy. also from last night, ground video from a fire burning in walnut creek. contra costa county fire says that this likely was started by

some hesitancy about getting into the water millions of americans, craig, were enjoying their july 4th weekend. it appears the sharks were not taking a break it is scary to see where a shark was making its way through an entire group of swimmers at the same time, a trio of incidents off long island. that makes five incidents in just two days. shark sightings along the east coast sending shockwaves in a familiar scene in florida, a shark in the pensacola area darted among swimmers as folks on the beach were screaming, get out of the water another ferocious fish spotted in the miami area. a hammer head swimming just feet from the busy shore.

further nonorth, threeee suspecd attacks, people packed the beaches of long island for the holiday. officials say two men in their 40s and a 50-year-old woman are the latest victims from separate shark bite incidents all three were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for nonlife threatening injuries spotting a school of sand tiger sharks in the water. this 40 mile stretch of long island's coastline, now the site of five shark attacks in just two days. >> come to the side. >> reporter: that comes less than a week after another close encounter with a hammer head between the floridas and bahamas, peaking paranoia for beach goers. despite the rising fears -- >> i don't go more than up to my waist because of the sharks. >> reporter: unprovoked shark

attacks are incredibly rare. florida still reports the most unprovoked bites in the u.s. but nationwide, both fatal and non-fatal shark bites are less common than in the past. still, some say more sharks have been swimming closer to shore. >> we're talking about shark attacks and shark sightings, sam, but meanwhile, there is another attack involving a different predator down south. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: yeah, craig tragically this was hilton head island, south carolina a 69-year-old woman left on the holiday with her dog for a walk. the dog returned, but she did not. authorities there locating her near a lagoon with an alligator guarding her body. ultimately, they were able to reach her and see she had not survived

this is the second time in 12 months they have had a fatal alligator attack. >> sam, thank you. now to the social media wars heating up with a new competitor stepping up to challenge twitter. meta is set to launch its own app tomorrow called threads. but some are already calling this one the twitter killer. erin mclaughlin is following that thread for us. >> reporter: that's right. the app will be available tomorrow, and it looks like users can link it directly to their instagram account. it is the latest battle between musk and zuckerberg get this they may actually physically fight each other it is the battle of the billionaires after elon musk recently challenged mark zuckerberg to a potential cage match and zuckerberg agreed, the two have yet to physically face-off but the source of their dispute, meta is now entering the ring to take on twitter.

office, walking down the street and somebody gets hurt or in a car accident and they're bleeding you need to stop the bleeding. there are a few things you can use for a makesh tourniquet. in the military i used tourniquets that are made for this, but you don't always have them with you. you might have a tie, a t-shirt, some socks give me this tie real quick. >> what's the goal here? >> the goal is to stop the bleeding you got a gunshot wound somewhere in the leg here. stop the bleeding within a few minutes because they can bleed to death very, very quickly. what you want to do is wrap something around people think belts belts do not work. >> belts don't work? >> belts don't work. they're too hard to twist. and the twisting mechanism is what stops the bleeding. >> twisting? >> one pin won't work. two pins work great. then twist and twist and twist as tight as you can until the bleeding stops

if i let go, it will untwist, so give me the shoe strings what you want to do is get the shoe string, tie it around and then secure that in place. the whole time you are doing this, as you are getting these instruments ready, have somebody else apply direct pressure because that direct pressure will stop this from bleeding. >> direct pressure on the wound. >> call 911, obviously even if it doesn't stop bleeding, you can go ahead and continue to apply direct pressure it will slow it down that's the important thing until help gets there. >> if you don't have a tie, you can use a stretchy sock. >> a t-shirt, anything sleeves of your long sleeved shirt. >> i just learned a lot there. >> let's go to another situation. you are with family, friends, even a stranger and you see they fall to the ground they're having a seizure what do you do >> it is an old myth that you want to put something in their

mouth to stop them from swallowing their tongue. those muscles that control the mouth, you will not get them open every muscle is tightened. you will just break teeth and cause problems. don't put anything in their mouth. essentially ride out the seizure. it will only last a few minutes. if they are somebody with seizure disorders. >> does that mean stand back >> you want to help. two things you want to do, most importantly, number one, protect their head give me that real quick. this is a sweatshirt, any kind of blanket or anything and put it down under their head and protect their head the other thing they will do is they will be moving around a whole lot and thrashing around you don't want to hold their arms still because you will not be able to, but you don't want them to get hurt, so clear out anything from the area. >> you don't want to hold them down, but also don't let them hurt themselves further. >> exactly that's the main point. just help them end the seizure just help them ride the seizure

out. once they are done - >> when they're stopped, when is it appropriate to engage. >> they will have 15 minutes of grogginess go ahead and just roll them on their side and let them sit there because they might throw up and you don't want them to choke on it. roll them on their side. keep assuring them they will be okay call an ambulance and then go from there. >> it is a good reminder to the other good samaritans to get engaged and call for help. >> help is important getting the whole community in there. you will probably never be at one place by yourself. with tourniquets, direct pressure, make sure that is applied and appropriate. people tend to panic, so if you are the one to take a couple breaths and slow things down, you can help >> that's good advice. >> just really quickly, how can you tell if you come upon someone that they're actually having a seizure

injured several people at a home in hayward last night. nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead the aftermath at that home near st. rose hospital. this happened about 10:30 last night when some fourth of july events were still going strong. police now say six people were shot, including the suspect who is now in custody. all of them are expected to survive. we are expecting more information in time for our midday news at 11:00. we want to get a look at the forecast because some of us need a nap after all the festivities. >> we are going to have cooler temperatures, i think that helps out a lot. also, breezy winds. our temperatures near the coast reached the low 60s, and upper 70s for the interior valleys with some of our warmer spots in the south bay reaching low 80s. we continue to enjoy cooler than normal temperatures for this time of year, at least through the start of the weekend. by early next week, it's going to be heating up, and our inland valleys will head back to 90 on
