i'm jessica layton >> glad you're with us i'm frances rivera we begin with the deadly flash flooding slamming the northeast. a state of emergency has been declared for orange county, new york, where at least one person has been killed while trying to evacuate entire communities have been cut off as the rushing water leaves damaged roadways in its wake >> wow chunks of black top. street signs wow. >> the flash flooding also washed out streets across pennsylvania the red cross says dozens of people -- >> the northeast is expected to see as much as a month's worth of rain in just a matter of hours. the national weather service warning that the damage could be similar to the remnants of a hurricane. let's get an update on the severe weather now with nbc meteorologist michelle grossman joining us live now with the very latest. michelle, good morning what a mess. >> yeah, what a mess

we have the rain come fast and furious. and we're going see more of that today in spots let's take a look at what it looks like now this is radar showing us where the cold front is. it's a slow-moving front a lot of tropical moisture these two interacting are dropping a lot of rain down to the south, the bright colors is indicating where the heavy rain is falling. but also to the north where we have a the heavy, heavy rainfall yesterday into the overnight hours. still seeing very heavy rainfall this will be the bulls-eye in parts of new england, especially vermont, that will see the chance for flash flooding. the bright colors showing us the heavy, heavy downpours, the summer-like downpours. we do have a lot of rainfall we're expecting. locally up to 5 inches on top of what we already saw. the ground is very, very saturated. that's going to lead to the chance of flash flooding we could see intense rainfall rates of up to 2 inches an hour. as we see the cold front making its way towards the east also severe weather expected in portions of the plains we'll talk about that too coming up >> okay. we'll see you in a bit
