today, wednesday, july 12th, 2023, burning up. record-breaking heat scorching the west. temperatures surpassing 110 degrees. when we can expect some relief. targeted. a surgeon shot and killed inside an exam room. why police believe a patient is responsible for the brutal attack.. cooling off. whenen you'll see prices start drop. the boredom dilemma. we'll begin this hour with that extreme heat. >> it just doesn't go away. stretching from california all the way to east, to florida, right now 80 million people are under heat alerts. temperatures are hitting triple digits.

humidity is making it feel even hotter. people in nevada can expect temperatures over 100 for the next five days straight. >> at the same time, there's a slow-moving disaster unfolding near los angeles a landslide has caused at least 12 homes to come off their foundations, people living there only have minutes to evacuate and more homes there are in danger of collapsing. >> we'll get to steve patterson on that in just a moment. meteorologist bill karins will have the forecast. let's begin with the heat and tiffany lane from our affiliate in las vegas is here. you're baking for days, how are people handling it? >> reporter: good afternoon, thank you so much for having me on. you're right, we're used to these temperatures out here but it doesn't mean it gets any easier for us, a lot of people as crow see on the strip, we

have people come here to vegas during the summertime. look around, not too many people walking on the strip. it's 107 outside. it's just too hot for too many people. they're being smart, staying indoors and cooling down. these casinos are well air-conditioned which is good and plenty of activities. so that's what many people are doing. lot of people out here right now, we have the nba summer league on this strip for about another league, a baseball game this weekend, we have so many activities and we may reach near-record-breaking temperatures this weekend so it's going to get even hotter you're encouraged to stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing and making sure you're staying cool. >> bill, break it down for us, why is the heat so bad and last something long right now. >> reporter: the weather pattern is stuck, some areas are actually kind of cool, the great

lakes, the northern new england, the rest of the country that has been hot is going to stay hot. the duration that really gets to you, it can be hot in phoenix and las vegas, when it's day after day of extreme heat it really starts to take a toll on you. 110 in phoenix. vegas, 101. 100 in dallas. 99 in del rio. florida, south florida, heat indices are in the low 100s. the focus over the next three, four days is going to be in the southwest. that's where the extremes are going to happen. these temperatures are ranging about six to maybe ten degrees warmer than normal. phoenix, 114. vegas begins to significantly heat up as we get into friday, saturday and especially on sunday, on sunday vegas has a degree of 116 in the shade. we have a shot at 117.

as far as vegas goes in that record if they don't break it on sunday they may do it on monday. also 116. >> all right, thank you. steve patterson in california, how much damage has that landslide that we were talking about done so far and what's being done to help people in those homes? >> reporter: broadly the problem is, kate, we don't know how much damage has been done to the area, because there needs to be a geological survey, so scientists and authorities can know exactly what the damage is if that extends further into the neighborhood. and how they can help people. assess the damage. right now, we know 12 homes have been red-tagged, of those 10 have still moved. one gentleman who says his home has moved 10 feet. his home is almost entirely

still a bit higher than normal. the june consumer price index is up 3%. month to month it rose just .2%. you. >> here to help us break it down is caleb silver. good to have you on set. we mentioned those top line numbers what are we seeing in terms of the good the bad and the ugly in this report. >> gas prices have fallen a lot. remember, that was the big headline last year as gas prices rise they bring all prices with it. we need gas to transport products. eggs a big factor for different reasons, those prices have come down. milk prices have come down. bread prices have not come down. shelter, though, rent still remains high. >> caleb, not lost on me that this is the 12th straight month

that inflation has gone down. people aren't feeling that at the grocery store, when that might change. >> i don't think that's going to change. a thing that started last year because the headline numbers got very big, started during the pandemic with mispricing going on. first it was goods, services, transportations prices still very high. >> caleb, thank you so much. president biden is on his way to finland after wrapping two days of meetings at the nato summit in lithuania, delivering a speech today calling the nato alliance vital and pledging support for ukraine. >> president biden's remarks came after his meeting with ukrainian president zelenskyy. josh lederman joins us now from lithuania. let's start with president's speech. what else did it say about

ukraine and the support of nato. >> taking stock of the last year and a half with the president really praising the western nations for not losing their strong support for ukraine, praising the ukrainians for their resilience saying that despite a year and a half of what he described as crimes against humanity by the russians the ukrainians haven't crumbled. a major focus of the speech today was really at looking at what comes next. watch. >> the defense of freedom is not the work of a day or a year, it's the calling of our lifetime. of all time. we're still for the struggle ahead. our unity will not falter, i promise you. >> reporter: president biden also meeting here with president zelenskyy of ukraine just after the ukrainian leader had come out on twitter sharply critical of nato's reluctance to immediately allow his country into the alliance, but after that meeting zelenskyy saying it

went great, it lasted twice as long that had been scheduled. focused on what they were able to promise ukraine, a commitment to start ukrainian pilots on f-16 fighter jets to be provided by the west as well as security commitments that the g7 nations will make to ukraine. one-off contributions of arms and money they've given over the last year and half those are going to regularly contributions from these western nations to ukraine. as a bridge until ukraine is able to finally join nato which these nations gather here has signaled is not going to come until they're no longer in an active war with russia. contract negotiations are under way in detroit auto

industry. >> morgan brennan joins us now. negotiations formally kicked off today between the united auto workers and detroit carmakers, the uaw president vowed to be aggressive in bargaining. higher prices are expected to strain back to school sales, parents with kids in grades k through 12 spent $600 with stocking on new school supplies and clothing. it's a 10% drop from last year. first time deloitte has expected a decline since 2014. domino's announced it will now put its menu on ubereats. domino's driver will ultimately deliver the food. the program is expected to roll

it's day two of amazon's supersummer prime day. if you're still scrolling for savings you might be reading reviews of products. we have a warning for you. >> fake blushes appear to everywhere. the problem is so severe the federal trade commissioner is getting involved. first off, how is the ftc looking to address these issue and they acknowledge there's problem here, anyone who's shopped around knows there can be a problem with things like fake reviews, paid reviews, either fake good or bad reviews.

here's what the ftc is concerned about, concerned a.i. may be making all of this worse. what they've done they started the process to create new rules. in the next few months they'd like to try and make these new rules official. what they would do, ban fake or paid reviews across the board. ban insider reviews. where company executives review their own products. ban buying and selling fake followers to given a artificial influence. these things will all come with fines. >> i guess the fines is the way they try to make it real. i was telling you in the commercial break, i did a story about fake reviews for doctors and dentists and service people, and, you know, it was a lot. there's a lot. in the meantime before the ftc act how can consumers make sure what they're looking for is

for hours only to be snubbed again due to technical glitches. an issue they've come to know all too well. nbc correspondent emilie ideda has more on the cruel summer for swifties. >> a dream for so many swifties around the world. ticket master's trouble selling taylor swift tickets has emerged abroad. ticketmaster has already paused them for dates in france after another website glitch. this one happened yesterday. >> i got the lucky space of 463,506 when i got that e-mail a few hours later the entire site they're pausing tickets sales. that was very shocking.

♪♪ is "the fast forward." i'm chris chmura here in the nbc bay area newsroom. people who live near the martinez refining company have concerns. they saw a large dust cloud 24 hours ago. a hazardous material team is investigating whether it's toxic. bob redell is breaking down what we know. >> reporter: the health department says it has taken samples of the substance that was released from the martinez refining company behind me. sent them off to a lab and should know by the end of the week whether or not what was

released is toxic to people. the substance is called coke dust. it's a byproduct of the refining process emitted from the plant at 8:30 yesterday morning. it reported the release to the health department almost two hours later. the health department encourages anyone who comes across the dust to clean it up with soap and water. you might recall last thanksgiving, this same refinery didn't report a release until after people complained about the dust in the neighborhood. we spoke with a group that say the refinery should not have waited to report yesterday's release for two hours. it should have been done immediately. they want more information about what's coming out of the refineries. >> i wonder if we know about every release. maybe stuff that is just routine is still not good for you when you are exposed to it on a regular basis. >> they have to make the investment so they do not contaminate the community.

after 127 years, anchor brewing will close its doors. they announced this morning. anchor says economic pressures are making it impossible to continue brewing. they will package and distribute supplies on hand. hayward is back online. hackers brought i.t. systems to a standstill sunday morning. the website along with online portals shut down. the city does not believe that personal data was compromised. it's official. sideshow spectators in alamida county are in danger of punishment. they passed an ordinance. violators face fines up to $1,000 and six months in jail. it's expected to go into afebl fekt in 30 days. doesn't matter where you are in, you are bound to experience some heat today. kari hall is boiling down our forecast. >> it's going to be warm in

dead and others are hurt after greyhound bus crashed in illinois. along interstate 70. the bus hit three commercial vehicles parked on the exit ramp. according the greyhound the bus was traveling from indianapolis to st. louis. a driver is under arrest in alabama after a police chase, that driver is only 8 years old. montgomery police said a boy stole a vehicle at gun point on tuesday morning and led officers on pursuit. the young boy is in custody facing several charges. clemson is the latest university to ban tiktok on its campus the university said the ban is due to security concerns. but students can still access to popular social media app while they're using their phone carriers' network, south carolina governor had banned tiktok from all state government devices as well. a disturbing story today out of tennessee.

police say a prominent surgeon was shot and killed by a patient inside an exam room on tuesday. maggie vespa is following this story for us. this is the last thing you ever expect to happen at a doctor's office. what do we know about the shooting and any potential motive. >> reporter: no word at this point on a potential motive. only saying in the person they've i.d., 29-year-old larry pickens the alleged shooter they say was indeed a patient of dr. ben mauck, a prominent orthopedic surgeon in the memphis area, this happened at collierville clinic. yesterday afternoon around 2:00, police telling reports they had gotten a 911 call that a doctor had been shot. when they arrived they found dr. mauck dead inside an exam room. >> the suspect had a firearm in his possession, it was on his

person, it wasn't in his hand. he was taken into custody without incident, so we have the suspect in custody at this time. >> reporter: again, that suspect just now i.d.ed as larry pickens. dr. mauck is being remembered, the outpouring of support on social media for the clinic, local children's hospital where he worked as a prominent renowned, respected orthopedic surgeon, those who knew and worked with him asking the community to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers. an absolutely tragedy. >> what else can you tell us about this suspected gun ann it's coming out slowly and surely. essentially they alarry pickens was a patient of dr. mauck, the chief telling our affiliate in memphis he was at the clinic for several hours leading up to the appointment. we don't know what brought him there. he was a patient, that there was

in their words, a targeted attack. he's charged with first degree murder and aggravated assault in this case. >> maggie, thank you. vermont is cleaning up after days of torrential rain and historic flooding there in vermont's capital. one of the biggest issues right now is tremendous amount of debris and mud covering roads. even more rain is expected to hit the states in the next few days. lindsey reiser joins us from montpelier. >> reporter: kate, i know you visited last summer you told me that last hour, for people who have seen the area then and now, it's heartbreaking. everything is caked in mud. the water has receded. water in the streets and that, kate, from people trying to wash off whatever was in their stores, people have been pumping water out of their basements for

hours. take a look at your screen how high that water got. people were getting by in canoes. the good news is, the rivers have crested. the water is receding, but still more than about 200 rescues since sunday night. lot of areas still are without power. of course you mentioned more rain in that forecast. let's go ahead and hear what some business owners told me about this long cleanup ahead. >> even if this is a temporary pause, weeks, months, nobody knows. so, either way, we're out of business for a while. >> reporter: it's a big mess. we have a lot of people coming in to help us. but there's a ton of cleanup. wet books aren't an easy thing to clean up. kind of heartbreaking looking at the books and throwing them away. >> reporter: that bookstore owner, she moved books from lower shelves, but kate, there

was so much water, they simply they weren't expecting that much. >> and, you know, i think luckily there was no loss of life that we know of, right, lindsey, but there's more rain in forecast, so how are they getting ready for that in. >> reporter: of this morning, no reported fatalities, but the ground is saturated, there's a fear, state officials believe that the water has receded enough that the rains shouldn't be a problem, but okay it's a persuasive worry here. iowa is set to become the latest state to ban aborgs after six weeks of pregnancy. they passed the bill as fierce protests erupted the proceeding. shaquille brewster joins us from des moines, iowa, set the scene inside the statehouse for us. what reasoning did state

legislators give in. >> opponents reacted very dramatically not only last night but already earlier today, they filed a lawsuit with the district court hoping that the court puts a hold on this legislation, that would become effective immediately after it is signed by the governor. but for conservatives in this state they've been celebrating this, this is something they have been looking for for years at this point. they say that the bill is actually a compromise, at least among their own party because it includes exceptions the health for the mom, cases of rape and incest. listen to what we heard from the bill's sponsor, trying to get this passed and worked to get this approved for years. listen to what she told us. >> we can't health care reproductive health care. women will still get the care they need. they'll still get pregnancy
