one. willie geist will sit down with star, matt damon. he plays an army general and you can catch that interview on the "today" show at 7:00, right after us here on "today in the bay." breaking news at 6:00. a big police presence in one oakland neighborhood. it follows a late night shooting. six months after getting the job, signs of voter remorse. the alameda district attorney is facing growing criticism. we will talk about the response to the backlash. temperatures will climb today with the excessive heat warning on tap for the weekend. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking the timeline for your neighborhood. this is "today in the bay."

good thursday morning. i am ginger conejero saab. laura is off. >> i am marcus washington. we are going to get a look with the commute in a few minutes, and we had issues earlier this morning and we will talk about that later, but now we have to talk about the forecast. the heat could get dangerous out there. yeah, for the coastal areas it will stay nice and cool. we are headed for the mid-70s in the peninsula, and 90s in the tri-valley with slightly warmer temperatures there. the upper 70s expected for the inner bay of the east bay. was move towards the north bay, it will be hot in the valleys with upper 80s. 68 degrees for a high in san francisco. you can see the fog there at the golden gate bridge. that will keep it cool for the weekend. we look at the areas shaded in purple, and that's included in the excessive heat warning and that does not include spots like oakland, hayward and down to

fremont. as you move away from the coastline, it's going to be hot. we could see some of the inland temperatures over 100 degrees increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. we will talk about the numbers and what to expect coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are seeing changing conditions. >> yeah, a major crash just before we started the show, and everything cleared up just after we started. over here, things are not clearing up and it's the opposite as fog is developing. visibility right in this area, you see the speed sensors are still green. highway 37, the bay bridge and highway 4, and both directions in through conquered shows slower drives and a build through hayward. back to you. >> thanks, mike. right now in oakland, a big

police presence in one neighborhood as officers search for a shooting suspect. here's video from overnight near that scene on macarthur boulevard near 99th avenue. this is not far from the oakland zoo. investigators telling our photographer at the scene this started after two people were shot. video from the scene last night showing the window of an suv shattered guy gunfire. police also telling people in that area to leave. two victims in the hospital with no update on their condition. we do know nobody is in custody just yet tied to the shooting. a defiant district attorney is defending herself against a campaign to oust her. pamela price says a recall just won't work. >> kris sanchez joining us now. how far are we with the effort? >> in the early stages, and they are just starting to gather

signatures and it's just after pamela price is six months into her position. she's facing criticism for her approach on crime. they are the group that filed the paperwork for that recall effort. she ran on a platform of criminal justice reform but many say what that is starting to look like is plea deals and dropped charges, and most of the notable cases include that of jasper wu who was killed in a shootout. the district attorney's office has not commented specifically about this recall effort. here's how she has countered that criticism previously. >> the narrative of my opponents is a failed strategy. we know that what they are

talking about does not work, does not keep us safe. i won because people did not trust this office. we're here because this community did not trust this office. >> save alameda for everyone is not speaking publicly about the effort just yet, but we know from other recall efforts that they will have to raise money in order to gather the signatures that they will need to qualify that recall. if that happens, there will be a recall election which could cost alameda county taxpayers millions of dollars. >> thanks, kris. new overnight, at least one person is dead in a third straight night of russian air strikes in and around ukraine's capital of kyiv. reuters is reporting ukrainian forces shot down 20 russian drones, and in some cases falling debris sparked fires. this comes as president biden shifts his focus to finland.

that is including spoken responses. google is also introducing a few other features, such as the ability to pin and rename conversations, and share responses with your friends and even change the tone and style of responses you get back from bart. interesting stuff. this comes as elon musk is getting into the a.i. game. he just launched a new company called xai, and joining his other companies, tesla, spacex and twitter. musk was an original investor in open a.i. but dropped out in 2018. he said the goal of his company is to understand the true nature of the universe. he plans to share more information on twitter tomorrow. new at 6:00, san francisco leaders are looking to transform parts of u.n. plaza.

a pilot program from the recs and parks department will replace bricks to a 68 park. this is for the skating jumps along with the area for chess and ping pong. i love a good game of ping pong. construction is expected to begin in september and will take about six weeks. this news comes in the wake of a new plan to expand the presidio tunnel tops and adding new picnic tables and amenities for visitors. construction begins at the end of next month. in-n-out fans have a new location. expect long drive through lines in santa rosa. it's next to the 101 and across from a mcdonald's. both places have fries for national fry day.

outdoor plans based on the temperature and the weather in antioch. one of the spots that will be heating up quickly as we go into the afternoon, and it starts out cool and you are trying to get things done before it gets hot. 72 degrees at 9:00, reaching into the mid-80s at 1:00 today. we are going to see highs in the low 90s, very much like it was yesterday. basically it's a repeat of yesterday's weather. san josé reaching the low 80s. mountain view, a high of 79 degrees. still foggy and cool in san francisco with a high temperature of about 68 degrees. then as you make your way through the north bay, it ranges in the 80s in napa and 90 in santa rosa, and hotter further to the north. tomorrow those temperatures go up several more degrees reaching 92 in martinez, and 103 in fairfield. that's not the peak of the heat. we will see that happen on saturday where we could see widespread highs over 100 degrees, and even up to 108 in

fairfield. that's dangerous heat. make sure you are drinking lots of water as well as giving access to plenty of water for your pets. here's a look at kris sanchez's dog, and she posts him on social media letting you know what cole is up to. never leave your dogs in a car, especially without air-conditioning. take a look at how hot some black top could get. if it's 87 degrees, the asphalt could be 143 degrees, and the national weather service saying the asphalt this weekend could get 165 degrees, hot enough to cook an egg on the sidewalk. so very dangerous heat. you wouldn't go out there barefoot, so don't take your dog out there during the hottest hours of the day. it will be in the triple digits starting tomorrow through sunday, and still hot on monday and getting better for early next week. we will see temperatures in san

i am ginger conejero saab in for laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we do have breaking news to get you to this morning. a fire burning in the santa cruz mountains. here's a live look from a nearby traffic camera. the fire started about 20 minutes ago near the top of mount aupl anow. the fire started in an rv and spread to the surrounding brush out there. so far firefighters are not saying how much terrain has burned or if there's any containment. now to the other big story, the bay area heat wave. bob redell is in the east bay with some of the steps that people are taking before power becomes a premium. first, a look at the timeline. meteorologist, kari hall, is here, and i know, kari, you have been telling us about this all week. >> yeah, tomorrow is when the excessive heat warning goes into

effect for areas away from the coastline and the inner bay. all the areas shaded in the bright pink here will be included in that area from friday morning to 11:00 sunday evening. we will look at high temperatures for today, and some of our inland valleys heading to 90 degrees, and it will be getting warmer as the sky clears. we're keeping mild weather for the peninsula with mid-70s in the forecast for today. foggy and cool in san francisco. it will eventually clear out, but only stay in the 60s for today. for the north bay, expect it to reach into the upper 80s. we are going to see even hotter temperatures tomorrow leading into a dangerously hot weekend. i will have more on that in the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. we will watch out for that. meanwhile, let's look at dublin and over in the east bay

where pg&e is focusing on minimizing power outages. >> bob is live, and bob, the temperatures are expected to be some of the highest we will see across the bay area. >> reporter: you are correct. we are here in pleasant today. pleasanton will be mid-80s today and tomorrow high 80s, and then over the weekend, high 90s. places like livermore will be in the 100s, and that's why the excessive heat warning will go into effect saturday and sunday. pg&e preparing for the heat wave, and the utility tells us they will be focusing on the east bay because of the potential for triple-digit heat. they are already identifying places with the greatest risk of power outages and placing crews into those areas. >> we don't anticipate widespread outages. we know there's certainly the possibility for the occasional

outage with respect to a transformer failing as a result of the severe heat. we are ready to respond. >> reporter: you might recall last summer that the south bay experienced a lot of power outages due to the extreme heat. pg&e is not expecting that this time around for two reasons. one, it's not going to be as hot as last summer. two, the utility has upgraded its equipment. a number of people in the bay area, as you are well aware, does not have air-conditioning. one person tells us their house in the south bay is like a sauna, and that's why they and others are heading to the local hardware store to stock up on fans and portable a/c units. reporting from pleasanton, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> it's nice to know people are taking steps to prevent some of the dangerous temperatures. >> yes.

our weather team wants to make sure you have the latest on what is going on, on the air and online at nbcbayarea.com. and download our app, because that will let you have a customized forecast for where you live. and then the fire department rescued two people at a complex outside redwood city. firefighters say two people had to be rescued. both are now in the hospital with injuries that are not life threatening. the fire is now out but the flames are contained to one unit. the cause is still under investigation. happening today a suspected south bay firebug arrested this week is expected to make his first court appearance. on tuesday authorities arrested the 32-year-old. investigators say he's the serial arsonist responsible for as many as 30 fires. they also say he has already

confessed to more than a dozen of them. the largest fire was a housing development under construction in morgan hill that burned down two weeks ago. he's being held now on a million dollars bail. this is a rare move by governor gavin newsom, intervening in legislation authored by a conservative lawmaker. the bill called for stronger sentences for child traffickers. newsom called grove and said it was an issue he cares about. and hollywood screen actors said they would go on strike if a deal was not reached. the talks are still coming short

with the studios and streamers. a vote by the national board is taking place this morning, and shortly after that union leaders plan to hold a news conference. and then a national survey is shedding new light on making it in the bay. it's a wealth index for all u.s. counties. guess what, bay area counties were among the wealthiest. smart asset crunched the numbers, and you can see where bay area counties ranked with other california counties. the top four counties, are san francisco, marin and contra costa is 18th nationally. investment, income, property value and median of course is what they looked at. and then the ferry building is turning 125 years old.

it's been called the gateway to san francisco because of the iconic clock tower and started as one of the main transit points for transportation in the 1900s. birthday events get under way at 12:30 this afternoon and will include live music, happy hour, and, you know, it's a great day for free ice cream out there. maybe not so much in the city, but maybe you can get it and box it up and then take it. >> it won't last that long. we have been talking about the range in temperatures, and you are trying to find things to escape the heat, so grab your fur baby and head to 35 city. at 10:00 in the morning, it will be in the upper 50s. we see high temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s in the middle of the day.

we have the rose' 5k happening on saturday and sunday. saturday starting out with temperatures in the upper 50s, and maybe motivation to complete that race early because temperatures heat up the later we get into the morning and afternoon as we will get in the 90s there. another cool event, going to a baseball game. the a's game tomorrow evening will start out in the low 70s and drop to the mid-60s, but still feeling very comfortable there in oakland. in mountain view, we have the obon festival on saturday. it's going to be in the low 80s, and a little warm for the sun coming down on you, but then we see temperatures dropping quickly as we approach the 8:00 hour and things wrap up in the low to mid-70s. for monterey this weekend, we are looking at cooler weather there along the coastline. low 60s on friday. 64 on saturday. a few more clouds, but we are still making it up to 67 on sunday. tahoe this weekend, it's going to be hot. look at palisades tahoe reaching

91 on saturday and sunday. mike, you wanted to show our commuters where that fire is. >> yeah, marcus mentioned we could see it from one of our traffic cameras. that traffic camera is in san josé and turned to the south. most of the drive is relatively light. san josé is starting to show the build for 101, and the camera is turned south, and 17 is over there, and 101 is over here and then here's the expressway and the fire is in that area. it's well clear of the commute routes, and that's why we can see the smoke and we are continuing to track that. we are looking ahead as well as we will have overnight closures, eastbound on the lower deck. folks will have to loop back over in the westbound direction. unlike the commute overnight, there will be little traffic in the area so you should be okay to exit there and just allow a few extra minutes.

bay area air quality regulators have now issued a notice of violation to the martinez refining company in the wake of the petroleum dust cloud released this week. the dust was called a by-product of refining process. the lab is examine samples to determine if it's toxic with the results expected back by tomorrow. the people that ended up with the dust in their homes and cars were encouraged to clean it with soap, and the refining company is urging people to contact them with claims or concerns. vice president kamala harris has matched the record for the most tie-breaking votes. yesterday she voted to end debate on the decision for the commission. it matches a record set nearly 191 years ago by john c.

los gatos back to where we were yesterday with a high temperature of 87 degrees. 93 in morgan hill. some of our inland areas in the east bay reaching into the low 90s. antioch, 94 degrees for a high. we are keeping it comfortable in oakland. a high of 75 degrees today. 73 in san mateo. you compare that to the 63 in daly city, and you can see the range in temperatures here even over a short distance. it's going to stay in the 60s in san francisco, but then as you make your way inland in the north bay, reaching 95 in ukiah. 96 in clearlake. napa with a high of 82 degrees today. that is much more comfortable. we will see the peak of the heat on saturday. take a look at some of the numbers and how it compares to the record high, and even though it will be dangerously hot it doesn't look like at this point we will set any new record high temperatures. we want to make sure we are staying safe in the heat. take a look at some of the tips. you want to make sure for your

pets you are giving them plenty of clean and fresh water. exercise late in the morning or late in the evening when it's not too hot. never leave pets or children inside a car, especially without air-conditioner. and this is kris sanchez's baby cole, and always posting updates on social media. and in direct sunlight, the asphalt could be 143 degrees. and the national weather service has been posting this weekend the asphalt could reach 165 degrees. that's going to be dangerous. we reach the peak on saturday. that's the hottest day, and still hot on sunday. eventually it will come back down for the middle of next week. for san francisco, that's where we are keeping the milder weather, low 70s on friday. upper 70s on saturday. then we are back to the mid-70s

6:56 now. welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay," including a fire in the santa cruz mountains. >> we want to give you a live look this morning from a nearby traffic camera. the fire started a little more than an hour ago near the top of the mountain. here's the time-lapse video we have of the burn. chp said it started in an rv and spread to surrounding brush. so far firefighters are not saying how much terrain has burned or if there's any containment, but it appears to be less than five acres. we will continue to monitor the story and bring you updates as we get them on air and online. if you have the app, you will

have to download the updates and we will continue to send them as they come in. in oakland, a big police presence in one neighborhood as officers search for a shooting suspect. here's video from overnight on macarthur boulevard near 99th avenue, very close to the zoo. investigators told our photographer on scene it started after two people were shot. video from last night shows the window of this suv shattered by gunfire. police were also telling people to leave the area. the two victims are now in the hospital with no update on their condition. we do however know nobody is in custody that is tied to the shooting. and pamela price took office in january but community group called safe alameda for everyone
