potential fire danger.e what you need to know heading into the hot weekend, including the latest spare the air alert. this is "today in the bay." good morning. i'm ginger conejero saab. laura garcia is off. >> and i'm marcus washington. we're going to get to that hot weather in just a moment. first, we do have breaking news this morning. mike inouye is tracking a sigalert. 880 very busy this morning. >> definitely. look at this picture -- these are pictures taken from earlier this morning with a deadly crash. you can see all the damage. this had to be cleared from southbound 880, just about the 66th on-ramp, which caused the on-ramp to be shut down. just seconds ago, as we take a live look out, you'll see traffic is starting to move better. we should see the live pictures out there on the map system. we're showing the traffic flow. there was a cone pattern that

blocked off the lanes. here is the on-ramp from 66th. that is open once again and traffic is flowing through. they just cleared that deadly crash. all that damage had to be cleared from early this morning. in that backup there were about ten vehicles that were in a crash, they may have just cleared that seconds ago. all folks were getting off the freeway and back on at 66th and the over-crossing was closed or restricted. things must be changing over the last few seconds because we see traffic starting to move in all lanes. there's the recovery at the very least as you're approaching the coliseum and heading past the rest of downtown oakland. it's slow once you get to 66th, and then after that everything else is clear. back to you. >> thanks, mike. you know that summer heat is ready to settle in. as we've been telling you all week, it's expected to last through the weekend. our kris sanchez is monitoring fire risk and the spare the air alert taking effect today. >> let's get a check with

meteorologist kari hall first. the outdoor activities, make sure you get those done early because that heat is not going to hold up for us. >> it's going to ramp up as we go into the afternoon for the inland areas. we're starting out with nice, cool temperatures and better air quality compared to what we'll see as we go into the afternoon. take a look at our spare the air alert day. the second one, only the second one we've had this year, and our inland east bay will have the worst of the air quality at 104. that means that that's a measure of particulate matter where we do see it's going to be higher in those areas. then taking a look at where we're starting this morning, temperatures in the low to mid-50s and it will quickly heat up as we go into today. this is where we're headed for this afternoon, reaching 103 degrees in fairfield, livermore 95 degrees, 75 in san mateo, and santa rosa reaching 94 degrees. and also in the upper 90s for many spots. here is a look at the peak of

the heat tomorrow. we'll see widespread triple-digit temperatures, morgan hill hitting 104, 105 in livermore and the same in concord. santa rosa in the upper 90s. notice that san francisco will be mild, with highs reaching into the mid-70s. and now let's head over to "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez, who has details on the fire that we know we'll see today and the spare the air alert day. >> reporter: let's start with the spare the air alert day. we expect that the air will be unhealthy today because of all of that heat, and if we can minimize the exhaust that we pump out into the atmosphere, that will definitely help. this is our live camera over dublin, one of the areas where we expect the smog will accumulate. consider working from home if you can or take your bike or take mass transit if possible. we expect that we could see more than exhaust in the air today, though. we may also see smoke. cal fire set fire to part of 288

acres of mount hamilton in santa clara county. while a prescribed burn during a heat wave might seem like a bad idea, the battalion chief says it has been in the planning stages for a year and these conditions are actually good training for a real response. >> we have a lot of influx of new operators, engineers, captains and firefighters both on our hand crews and engines. this is a first attest for a lot of them for the fire atmosphere. >> the grassy side will provide ample practice because of our wet winter, all of the invasive plants like mustard grass are growing wild and they are at the peak of their flammability right now. cal fire also got to practice with that drone and that one is operated by spring valley fire. it really speaks to the collaborative effort of all of that. so if you see smoke in the area of mount hamilton, don't call 911. cal fire knows about it.

corps is without a leader as abortion politics sparks a big face-off in congress. senator tuberville is blocking hundreds of military officers from being promoted, this stems from the white house changing its policy to ensure abortion access and pay for service members to travel out of state for procedures. tuberville argues the change should require senate approval. president biden voiced his frustrations yesterday in finland. >> hopefully we can get some kind of conversation going, negotiation. you can't work anything out unless you sit down and visit. >> i would be willing to talk to him if i thought there was any possibility he was changing his ridiculous position. he's jeopardizing u.s. security by what he's doing. >> the marine corps's top officer vacated the post monday, meaning the marines will be without a senate appointed leader for the first time in 164 years. happening this morning, organized labor will gather in san francisco ahead of a

state-run dmv workshop on self-driving cars. the industry has been under lots of pressure recently. last week another group cone sf placed traffic cones on top of self-driving cars in a protest over safety concerns. this week, city regulators postponed a vote to green light operating the cars in the city around the clock. opponents plan to rally at city hall and then march to dmv offices where the workshop is being held. that rally starts at 7:30 in the morning. the end of the line is coming for a popular bay area-based seafood chain. the fish market has announced its last two bay area locations. the original restaurant in palo alto and the one in san mateo will close in september. now, its south san francisco fishery will also close. the owners cite changing market conditions. the palo alto restaurant opened in 1996.

next month, both bay area restaurants will bring back some of the favorites from that menu from over the years. the two remaining southern california restaurants will remain open. a startling price tag on the costs of the climate in crisis, the cost to protect san francisco bay from rising sea levels will top $100 billion over the next 25 years. now, so far just a fraction of that money is accounted for. future projects will likely have to include adding sea walls and sea gates, as well as expanding levies and wetlands. the study concludes if something is done the potential damage could top $200 billion. 5:09 this morning, as we take a live look out at san jose in dublin. this is where many are bracing for some record heat this weekend. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that for us. kari, how are we starting out? >> it's starting out nice and

cool. the good thing is we do have cool mornings ahead. it's just going to be hot during the afternoons, especially for the inland valleys. here is a look at our highs, reaching 97 in san martin and in concord 96 degrees. napa will see a high of 86 degrees today, and san francisco will be in the upper 60s. here is a look at the peak of the heat tomorrow. we'll receive widespread triple digits from the south county to the inland east bay. in the north bay it's going to be dangerously hot, reaching 95 in novato and a mild 75 in san francisco. you can see the range in temperatures from 60s all the way up to 103 degrees. and then as we deal with this excessive heat warning, it's for those areas away from the coastline, as well as away from the inner bay where we are going to see valley temperatures in that excessive heat warning from saturday through sunday. you do want to make sure in these areas you are reducing outdoor activities and looking for signs of heat-related

illness. we'll talk more about the weekend, those temperatures and how much we cool off next week coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at where you can find hopefully lower gas prices. >> we still have a couple of $4.09s in livermore and san jose as we've been talking about. most of those prices continue to rise above that. costco has the low in santa clara at $4.27 on coleman. the next one is contra costa county, $4.29 at ultra and national both on clayton road in concord. and hq fuels, the bottom price here on shoreline highway in mill valley. it's the low of $4.35. thank you for reporting the bad news through gasbuddy.com. the roadways, the crashes from cleared from the roadway, minor recovery. you saw the speed sensors change to green. again, everything southbound 880 has cleared from the overnight two alerts, one including a deadly crash.

good morning. wall street is set for a mixed open ahead of earnings from several big banks. the market is rising for a fourth straight day yesterday on the back of more data showing inflation cooled more than expected last month. the nasdaq and s&p 500 closing at their highest levels since april of last year. the nasdaq is up 3.5% this week, on pace for its best performance since mid march. in focus today, data on import prices and consumer sentiment. earnings season gets under way with results from jpmorgan, citigroup and wells fargo. meantime, nba commissioner adam silver says the league is working with apple to bring a high-tech viewing experience to the reality headset. they told game action slam dunks and fast breaks could be part of a re-imagined courtside experience on the device, which is expected to go on sale early next year. when the vision pro was unveiled last month, disney's ceo bob iger suggested fans would be able to watch an nba game as if

>> charming country appeal. we've been talking about the heat this weekend and how hot it's going to be, and it's not for all of the bay area. luckily, we'll have places to go escape. we're going to talk about that. this is one of the spots that's going to start to really heat up today. it's already clear and we are seeing temperatures nice and cool now, but the temperature trend takes it straight up as we go late morning into the afternoon. so you do want to make sure you're getting in those outdoor activities early. we'll be in the mid-50s for the next couple of hours and then 70 degrees at 10:00, and 80 degrees at noon. so going up about 10 degrees every couple of hours. we're headed for 84 in san jose, in los gatos we'll see a high of 91. morgan hill reaching 97 degrees. there will be a wide range in temperatures, with oakland reaching 77 and walnut creek is going to be 95, about the same in danville, and antioch reaching 100 degrees today. along the coast, half moon bay

will be in the mid-60s and mid-80s for palo alto, in san francisco low 70s for downtown and the mission district, and reaching 102 today in ukiah, while sonoma will hit a high of 90 degrees. the seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen, as we talk about our temperatures for today versus the record. so, yes, we've been talking a lot about it being hot. it doesn't look like we'll set any records, highs reaching into the mid-90s. in comparison death valley this weekend is going to be very close to the world record that is in the guinness book of world records, still disputed whether it's accurate, of 134 degrees. this weekend it's going to hit 129 degrees. so dangerously hot there. compare that to the coastline, around the bay area we're looking at some 60s and 70s for highs this weekend. so that's going to be a popular destination. make sure you're safe as you head out. our valleys heat up once again

to the triple digits for the next several days. on monday it's still hot but it will start to back off with mid-80s for next week, san francisco will see mid to upper 70s. mike, the friday commute is looking friday light now. >> it is now. earlier there were major issues through oakland but those have cleared. i'll give you a shot of that in a second. the berkeley curve, the feed off of the maze moving slowly. you can recognize the denny's as you travel through emeryville. over here in oakland, southbound side had two major crashes right by the coliseum. they've both cleared at the top of our show at 5:00. we saw the clearing in progress and the flares burned out, so no more distraction through oakland. one more crash, 101, no slowing, no lanes blocked, but still there's activity in the north bay. we have a light drive out of the altamont pass.

>> it's going to warm up this afternoon and only for the inland areas. as we start out this morning, taking a live look at san francisco, we have a layer of low clouds and fog that's going to protect the city from the inland heat. let's head down to morgan hill. we're trying to get in those outdoor activities, going to the park, any time before noon because we go from upper 50s to mid-80s as we see those temperatures ramping up quickly, headed for 97 degrees today. it will be 95 in livermore, but only in the mid-70s for san mateo. and napa for this afternoon heads for 86 degrees. it will be hotter for santa rosa, with a high of 94. tomorrow we reach the peak of the heat. you can see those upper 90s in santa rosa, while san francisco will be in the mid-70s. mountain view reaching 85 degrees and 100 in dublin tomorrow. san jose hitting 92 degrees. so dangerous heat, especially for the inland east bay and the south county. we will have more on that in

just a few minutes. as kari was just saying, the heat advisory may kick in tomorrow, but that doesn't mean today we won't have plenty of hot weather as well. >> especially in places like the tri-valley, where "today in the bay"'s bob redell is live in livermore. i know yesterday you were already feeling that heat. today that's the same story. there's also a spare the air alert in effect. >> reporter: and it's going to be slightly hotter today. good morning to you, ginger and marcus. the bay area air quality management district has issued a spare the air alert for today because it's going to be hot out. we expect this bank sign to be hitting the mid-90s. you combine the high heat with the car exhaust and other forms of pollution, that's why the district is predicting that today's air is expected to be unhealthy. they're encouraging you to take public transit, bike, walk if you can. if you're trying to get to work or doing what you have to do, and avoid things like mowing the lawn. as we've been reporting all

week, pg&e is also preparing for this weekend's heat wave by pre-placing workers and extra equipment in places like the east bay where temps are expected to hit the triple digits saturday and sunday. that way if a transformer or a piece of equipment fails, they're ready to respond quickly. the utility does not anticipate widespread outages, but says there could be issues in isolated areas. >> the equipment does not have a chance to cool down and recover and that's when we'll sometimes see equipment failure and heat related outages. >> reporter: and to save money on your electric bill and ease the strain on the grid, pg&e recommends you set your thermostat to 78 degrees, opening up your house early in the morning when those breezes are out, that gives you more time before the ac has to kick in, and make sure your air-conditioning unit is clean and your filters aren't dirty. also, there's the increased risk of fire danger. we spoke with con fire and they tell us that you want to limit

any activities outdoors that could accidently start a fire. if you see a wildfire, they're saying don't assume that's already been called in, that it's been reported. they want you to call 911. reporting live in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot. with the hot weather settling in, our team is keeping track of those rising temperatures, boat on air, as well as online. also, download our free nbc bay area app, that way you'll get the resources that you need to deal with this weather and you'll get a customized forecast for where you live. breaking news now in oakland, all lanes are open once again after two crashes, one of them deadly this morning, on southbound interstate 880. at least 15 vehicles were involved in that crash, this first crash happened a little after 1:30 south of 66th avenue. now, in that case at least five vehicles were involved, one person died and another is in the hospital with unknown injuries. the chp says about two hours

later, with traffic control in place, ten cars piled up directly behind the initial crash. it started when the approaching car sideswiped several stopped cars, two more people are in the hospital from this crash within the last hour both scenes have been cleared. traffic is flowing again as well on highway 92 after a spill led to closures deep into the night on the peninsula. it started before noon yesterday in the eastbound lanes near 101 in san mateo. that's when a flatbed truck spilled sodium bisulfate. hazardous material teams were called in. people living nearby were told to shelter in place. the commute was a headache that lasted for hours for a lot of those drivers. >> my goodness, i've been in traffic for probably almost two hours, totally unexpected. >> i've been sitting in traffic for about 20, 30 minutes.

that's just from what is the exit right off here until to this point. >> teams used baking soda to clean that spill and at one point health leaders called it a relatively low-risk situation, but vapors can cause irritation to eyes as well as the lungs. well, developing right now, screen actors plan to picket in san francisco along with l.a. and new york city following yesterday's sag-aftra strike vote, and in some cases striking hollywood writers will join them. >> union leaders are organizing an event at noon where they'll walk to the nearby cable car turnaround at california near market street in san francisco. now, silicon valley-based streamers are a big part of this labor conflict, along with pixar in emeryville. let's go live to southern california for the latest on this. bailey miller is in los angeles. bailey, tell us what this means for hollywood production

companies. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. we are here outside of sag-aftra headquarters. we know this isn't only going to affect the movie-making industry but many other industries because we know this specific industry does impact many others, because it employs many people here in los angeles and, of course, across california. now, what does this strike mean? it means no more press junk ets, film premieres, social media promotion, award shows or festivals, and of course we know all filming is now at a halt. we've already seen this as the cast of "oppenheimer," including matt damon and emily blunt walked out of their premiere when the word came down the union would be striking. this was announced after the union representing 160,000 actors, stunt performers and others did not reach an agreement with the alliance of motion picture and television

producers. the breakdown in negotiations came down to streaming residuals and ai protections. the president of sag-aftra, fran drescher, says they had no choice. >> the journeyman actor, the journeyman performers, that is the majority of hour members who are just working class people trying to get jobs to feed their family and to pay their rent. >> the level of expectation that they have, that is just not realistic. and they are adding to a set of challenges that this business is already facing that is, quite frankly, very disruptive. >> so they're not being realistic? >> no, they're not. >> reporter: so that was disney ceo bob iger doing an exclusive interview with cnbc responding. the alliance of motion picture and television producers released a statement, they say

and this weekend also is the napa to sonoma rose 5k and the half marathon. tomorrow we start out with upper 50s and you can see how quickly it starts to heat up into the upper 60s and then upper 80s and then upper 90s for the middle of the day. so try to get that in early. and then also for some local events going on, the mountain view obon festival will be happening tomorrow afternoon starting at 4:00, and it will be 80. it's going to be milder there with sunshine. it might be also a great place to head to escape that valley heat. i think a lot of people are going to be going to the beach this weekend. santa cruz, mid-70s today and 74 tomorrow, cooler on sunday. here are some things to consider as you're heading out to the beach. look out for the warnings they put up and be cautious in the cold water because most people don't realize just how cold it is, right now in the low 50s for

water temperatures. now, if you do see a rip current or you get caught in one, swim parallel to the shore and don't swim against the current if you do get caught in one. never swim alone. make sure that everyone is keeping eyes on each other to be safe this weekend as it heats up. mike, do you have a new crash now in the tri-valley? >> i do, it popped up in a critical part of 580 just after folks join in off of vasco. because it's friday we have a lighter volume of traffic. it's at the center divide, so a distraction and more of an issue if it was on the right shoulder. we see slowing through livermore but not a lot of traffic. it's a steady flow out of the altamont pass and nothing jarring. the rest of the bay showing a typical friday. we'll talk about what's going on this weekend starting friday night at 8:00 p.m., they're going to close off this section of 84. it used to happen overnight but now they have it all weekend, you'll have to use 680 and mission boulevard as your alternate. locals have seen those signs for

airfare price transparency a thing of the past. in 2012 the obama administration introduced a rule requiring airlines to disclose the full price for airfares. house republicans are pushing to end that, arguing airlines should have the same freedoms as other industries. if the bill passes, airline ads would have to be transparent about fees but not governmental taxes and other fees. some say the airlines could use this to hide the full price of flights behind links or fine print. new this morning, artificial intelligence is infiltrating more and more parts of our daily lives, so why not our love lives? i disagree with that, i don't want it in my love life. but today's tech correspondent got a firsthand look at rizz, an app created by college students to help pickup lines. they billet as a way to reduce

unhealthy air quality. we're seeing our second spare the air alert day of the year today, and for the inland east bay where we measure the particulate matter, it will be the most unhealthy. if you have asthma, breathing problems, limit your time outside. also pretty bad air quality in santa clara valley because we get the heat trapped in with the ozone and then we see whatever pollutants we put out being pushed back down to the surface. today we'll see not much of a wind and temperatures heating up to the low 90s in dublin, with mid-90s in santa rosa and in san francisco. a nice, comfortable 69 degrees. you can see the range in temperatures there, with still some 60s near the coastline tomorrow. but then for the interior valleys it will be as hot as 105 degrees. we'll see that in san martin, concord and livermore reaching 105, and mostly 90s for much of the inland areas. still pretty hot on sunday as well, with the excessive heat warning in effect from 11:00

tomorrow morning through 11:00 p.m. on sunday. that's when you do want to watch out for signs of heat-related illness, the risk goes up with these hot temperatures. take a look at some of these numbers, what the record is for the day. even though we are going to see some very high heat, it doesn't look like we'll see a lot of new records broken. make sure you're staying hydrated. if you do have to be outside, find some shade, wear sunscreen and also wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. a hat helps. take care of those pets. don't take them out during the hottest hours of the day and never leave them inside a vehicle. temperatures in concord really spiking for saturday but there's relief in the extended forecast. we do though have to make it through the heat for the next several days with triple-digit temperatures inland and san francisco will only be in the low to mid-70s. mike, we're still not seeing any metering lights? >> no, but that's not unusual for a friday. it is very light on fridays,
