trending, head to nbcbayarea.com. we have that trending bar at the top of our home page. right now at 6:00, bracing for the extreme heat. temperatures are set to soar and we are tracking it all. meteorologist kari hall has the timeline. and it's not just the heat, but also the potential fire danger. what you need to know heading into this hot weekend. this is "today in the bay." and this is friday morning, as we head into a hot weekend. we want to say good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm ginger conejero saab. laura is off today. mike, you're keeping an eye on traffic this morning, and we're going to have an update on that in just a moment, right? >> that's right. >> we want to start with meteorologist kari hall, because as we've been saying, the hot temperatures are coming this weekend and folks need to be prepared. >> you need to be prepared, and really just a short drive can change what kind of weather you're dealing with across the bay area. take a look at this excessive heat warning. it will be in effect for the

inland areas and some of the spots shaded in pink will be included in that. it starts tomorrow morning at 11:00 and it does not include san francisco, the coastline or the inner bay and spots like oakland, hayward or in fremont. as you make your way inland, the temperatures ramp up and we could see a widespread swath of triple-digit temperatures across the bay area, and also that increases the risk of heat-related illness. we'll be dealing with that this weekend. at least we're starting out cool. take a look at santa rosa, where we're starting with low 50s and a few clouds. it will be clearing out as we head toward 8:00 to 9:00, the rest of the day is sunny and temperatures will be warming up, reaching into the mid-80s by 1:00 this afternoon. today we're looking at highs reaching up to 95 in livermore, but that's still about 9 degrees below the record of 104 degrees. in santa rosa we're headed for the mid-90s while san jose will see mid-80s. we'll be watching the numbers go

up tomorrow. let's head over to kris sanchez, with details on a fire we know we will see and that spare the air alert. >> we expect the air will be unhealthy because of the heat, so if we can minimize the exhaust, that will definitely help out. this is our live camera over dublin, one of the areas that smog will likely accumulate, making the air unhealthy today. consider working from home if you can, ride your bike or take mass transit if possible. we could expect to see more than just exhaust in the air today. we expect to see smoke. cal fire set fire to part of a 288 acre area of mount hamilton in santa clara county. this is a prescribed burn. while a prescribed burn during a heat wave might seem like a bad idea to regular joes like us, the battalion chief says this

has been in the works for a while. the grassy hillside of mount hamilton will provide ample practice for cal fire and the other agencies participating, because of the wet weather, invasive plants like mustard grass are growing wild and right now they are at the peak of flammable. cal fire also got to practice with drones and those are operated by the partners at spring valley fire. if you see smoke in the area of mount hamilton, no need to call 911. they know there's a burn happening. if you see it in other places, you might want to call. >> i wonder, do they practice in times like this when it's stream heat because many times when we have fires, it's also hot. >> if they've been planning it for a year, we didn't know there was going to be a heat wave a year in the planning.

but it doesn't hurt if they can get that practice. it is very different, we all know this, when you're at a fire and it's hot versus when you're at a fire and it's not hot. >> and you mentioned earlier the last hour that it's a nice collaborative effort. >> yes. they have partner agencies and mutual aid and whatnot. >> thanks, kris. you can track our temperatures or the temperatures that are coming with the nbc bay area app. download it now and you will get updates on this heat wave and other severe weather events. new overnight, authorities in the east bay are looking for a gunman in a late-night shooting. this happened before midnight on 10th and willow streets in oakland. police say one person was shot several times and is now in the hospital. so far, no update on their condition. a live look in sacramento and an unusual aboutface in the city where a sex trafficking bill on life support was just the case days ago. a gop-authored bill could

increase prison sentences for child sex trafficking repeat oh fenders. on tuesday democrats voted the bill down. backlash ensued. governor newsom stepped in to try and revive it. yesterday in a special hearing the same committee held a second vote and unanimously approved the bill. it still has to clear the committee phase before it ever reaches any full floor vote. for the first time in more than a century, the u.s. marine corps is without a leader, this as abortion politics sparked a big face off in congress. alabama republican senator tuberville is blocking hundreds of military officers from being promoted. this stems from the white house changing its policy to ensure abortion access and pay for service members to travel out of state for their procedures. tuberville argues the change should require senate approval. president biden voicing his frustrations yesterday while he was in finland. here is senator tuberville. >> hopefully we can get some

kind of conversation going, negotiation. you can't work anything out unless you sit down and visit. >> i would be willing to talk to him if i thought there was any possibility he was changing his ridiculous position. he's jeopardizing u.s. security by what he's doing. >> the marine corps top officer vacated his post on monday, meaning the marines will be without a senate-appointed leader for the first time in 164 years. organized labor will gather in san francisco ahead of a state-run dmv workshop on self-driving cars. the industry has been under lots of pressure recently. last week another group, cone sf, placed traffic cones atop self-driving cars in a protest over safety concerns. this week city regulators postponed a vote to green light operating the cars in the city around the clock. opponents plan to rally at city hall and march to dmv offices

where the workshop is being held. it starts in more than an hour at 7:30. the end of the line is coming for a popular bay area seafood chain. fish market announcing its last two bay area locations, the original restaurant in palo alto and the one in san mateo will close in september. its south san francisco fishery will also close. the owners cite changing market conditions. the restaurant opened in 1976. next month they will bring back some of the favorites over the years. the two remaining southern california restaurants will stay open. a startling new price tag on the costs from our climate in crisis. a new multi-agency study concludes the cost to protect san francisco bay from rising sea levels will top $100 billion over the next 25 years. now, so far just a fraction of that money is accounted for. future projects will likely have

to include adding sea walls and sea gates, as well as expanding levees and wetlands. the study also concluded if nothing is done, potential property damage from rising sea levels could top over $200 billion. 6:07 right now. taking a live look out in san jose. this is where many are bracing for that record heat over the weekend. meteorologist kari hall, of course, has been monitoring that. the good thing is we're starting out the mornings nice and cool. >> we're starting out nice and cool. we don't think we'll set new records, but it will definitely be hotter than we like to see. as we get started in san mateo, your morning commute is starting out cloudy and cool temperatures once again. you don't yet need the air-conditioning. it will be in the mid to upper 50s for the morning. as we go throughout the day, staying nice and mild here but temperatures will be spreading out. we can see along the coastline parts of the peninsula stays nice and mild, 60s and 70s. then as you head toward the

tri-valley, the inland east bay could be as hot as 103 degrees in fairfield with upper 80s and low 90s in the north bay. tomorrow is the peak of the heat and we're going to see a lot of triple digits from martinez to concord, over toward livermore and down to san martin and morgan hill we're going to see some really hot temperatures. also very hot on sunday, but in san francisco you can see the coastal temperatures, it's going to be really nice there. so once again, our microclimate is in full effect for the weekend. we're going to talk about when we'll get a nice cooldown and some of the dangers we're facing this weekend as the valley temperatures heat up. more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> we have the $4.09s we talked about yesterday, but the lows are rising. costco has the low in santa clara with $4.27 on coleman avenue. contra costa county shows up with a low of $4.29, we're looking at ultra and national both on clayton road in concord.

good friday morning. the time is 6:13, as we make plans around the heat today. let's get a look at morgan hill, starting out with upper 50s, a few clouds, and then clearing out and then temperatures ramping up. we'll be in the mid-80s by noon and upper 80s by 1:00. we're headed for the upper 90s today. so get in the playgrounds and the walks early in the day. we'll talk more about what's ahead for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. we're looking at traffic and the dublin interchange. these folks are traveling toward us and that's westbound 580 you're looking at. smooth drive out of the altamont. we'll track changes at the bay bridge as the metering lights are on, but it's also friday. we'll see how the two points converge. >> thank you. wall street is set for a mixed open ahead of earnings from several big banks this morning. stocks rose for a fourth

straight day yesterday, with more data showing inflation cooling faster than expected. the nasdaq and s&p 500 closed at the highest levels since april of last year. in focus today, data on import prices and consumer sentiment. now, it appears users of meta's new threads app, well, they're starting to lose interest. the twitter-like social media platform reported a record 100 million users over the first five days, but then data from sensor tower shows there's been some drop-off. daily active users are down about 20% from this past weekend, and the amount of time users are spending on threads is down 50% to ten minutes. new concerns surrounding a popular sugar alternative. the world health organization is classifying the link between liver cancer and the soda sweetening aspartame.

experts say it is safe to consume within the recommended daily unit but more research is needed. the sweetener is used as a substitute for sugar in diet sodas and chewing gum. one california city has just jumped past san francisco when it comes to rental costs. here is a live look in san diego, the third most expensive when it comes to rent in the nation with the average for a one bedroom just under 3,200. san diego is the only major city to see population growth, san jose taking the top spot for the most expensive rent in the nag, with new york at number two, san diego now number three, san francisco at number four, boston, massachusetts, taking the fifth spot. you saw the beautiful shot of san diego. it's not a surprise why they're moving on up in the rankings. >> they want the rent to move on down. >> other way. trending this morning, an iconic '80s band is coming back to the bay area after headlining

to depend on where you are. what kind of weather you'll experience. because we are going to see temperatures ranging from 60s to over 100. it's also going to be unhealthy for a lot of spots in the inland areas. so we have our second -- only second of the year spare the air alert day, and it's going to be most unhealthy in the inland east bay. now, if you're sensitive to a lot of the pollutants out there, you have asthma or if you have any kind of breathing problem, limit your time outside. santa clara valley will have a high measure of particulate matter, making it unhealthy for sensitive groups. now, taking a look at temperatures, we are starting to see the wind calming down, temperatures going up. cupertino will hit a high of 88 degrees. compare that to the 97 we'll see in morgan hill for today, and for the east bay, antioch reaching the triple digits with mostly 90s for the tri-valley and inland east bay.

along the bay you've got just enough of a breeze to keep temperatures in the upper 70s today. we'll hit a high of 81 in redwood city while half moon bay will stay in the mid-60s. san francisco ranging from 63 in the marina district to 72 downtown. it will reach 102 in ukiah today and still cool for the coastline. we're going to see temperatures heating up, but most likely not setting a new record, with livermore reaching a forecast high of 105 degrees tomorrow at the peak of the heat. the record is 107, so we'll be really close. other areas, it's going to be hot, but definitely not looking like it's going to set a record high temperature. another area we're watching, death valley. take a look at the forecast for the weekend. that just looks painful. 129 degrees on sunday. the hottest temperature ever recorded on earth, according to the guinness book of world

records, death valley is in the -- in 1913 it hit 134 degrees. so they're going to be close to the hottest temperature ever measured that's a reliable source. here is how we're trying to stay cool this weekend in the inland areas. stay hydrated. if you're outside, find some shade. that could make it feel 10 to 20 degrees cooler, and don't forget the sunscreen. dress cool with lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat will help keep the sun off of your head. and take care of the pets. don't take them out walking while it's super hot outside and definitely keep those paws off of the hot asphalt for the weekend. and our temperatures inland reaching into the triple digits from now through sunday. but then on monday, how about some mid-90s? would that be a little better? so we continue to make progress by the middle of next week with mid-80s, but it's not going to be nearly as hot in san francisco, so we're going to be

in the upper 70s for saturday and 74 on sunday. mike, so far it looks like it's all friday light. >> it's looking great. green sensors dominate. san mateo bridge around the toll plaza, the volume is just building a bit. we're looking at contra costa county where we don't have major issues. vasco road, the drive from marsh creek to 580 was around 21 minutes. it's coming down again as the early part of the commute eases down. 580, slowing around north livermore. the earlier crash may still be in the center divide. the metering lights are activated according to the blotter but no backup. there's a little slowing on the incline. so there's a bit of a build as far as volume, but no major problems. highway 37, the earlier crash cleared, just mild slowing. over here, concord just now showing speeds dip down into the upper 50s. that's not bad, but it is below the speed limit. slowing shows up into concord.

this excessive heat warning. that starts tomorrow at 11:00 in the morning and continues through 11:00 p.m. on sunday. we are going to see some hot valley temperatures, but we also do have these cool mornings to start. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s and after a cool morning some of our inland areas are going to see temperatures ramping up quickly. antioch going from 59 degrees now to some mid-70s at 10:00, and some upper 80s by 1:00. eventually we'll reach up to 100 there today. we are looking at a lot of upper 80s and low 90s, but san francisco and the inner bay it's 60s and 70s today. a wide range in temperatures. we will reach the peak of the heat tomorrow with widespread triple-digit temperatures san martin reaching 105 to 100 in martinez and some upper 90s in much of the north bay. >> kari, thanks. as kari was just saying, the

heat, the peak of it will kick in tomorrow. that doesn't mean today we won't feel plenty of hot temperatures. >> especially in places like the tri-valley where bob redell is live in livermore. there's also a spare the air alert in effect today. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, ginger and marcus. the bay area air quality management district has issued a spare the air alert because it is going to be hot today. not as hot as this weekend but the temperature sign behind me, which i know is reading 55, is going to read 40 degrees higher. it's going to hit mid-90s today in livermore, so you combine the heat and then you've got car exhaust and other forms of pollution. that's why the management district is concerned about the air quality. they think it's going to be unhealthy. they want you, if you can, to take public transportation, bike, ride, walk to work if that's something you can do. and avoid things like mowing the lawn. now, as we've been mentioning this week, pg&e is also preparing for this weekend's

heat wave. they are pre-placing workers and extra equipment in places where temps are expected to hit the triple digits on saturday and sunday. that way if a transformer or some other piece of equipment fails, they're ready to respond quickly. the utility does not anticipate widespread outages, but says there could be issues in isolated areas. >> the equipment does not have a chance to cool down and recover and that's when we'll sometimes see equipment failure and heat-related outages. >> reporter: to save money on your electric bill and to ease the strain on the grid during this heat wave, pg&e recommends you set your thermostat to 78 degrees. opening up your home during the morning breezes, like around now also gives you more time because the ac -- before the ac has to kick in, it will cool off the house. you want to make sure your ac unit is clean and those filters are clean as well. there's also an increased risk of wildfires this weekend. cal fire reminds us to limit

outdoor activities that could lead to the accidental setting of a wildfire and they also say if you see a fire, smoke, and you know it's not a controlled burn, don't assume that someone else has reported it and they want you to call 911. reporting live in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks a lot. our weather team will continue to bring you the latest both on air as well as online and at nbcbayarea.com. our nbc bay area news app is free. it's a great resource. you're going to get a customized forecast where you live. new in oakland, all lanes are open again after two crashes, one of them deadly on southbound interstate 880. at least 15 vehicles were involved. this first crash happened a little after 1:30 south of 66th avenue. now, in that case at least five vehicles were involved, one person died and another is in the hospital with unknown injuries. the chp says about two hours

later, with traffic control in place, ten cars piled up directly behind the initial crash. it started when an approaching car sideswiped several stopped cars. two more people are in the hospital from this crash, and within the last 90 minutes both scenes have been cleared. meanwhile, traffic is flowing again on highway 92 after a spill led to a closure deep into the night on the peninsula. it started before noon yesterday in the eastbound lanes near highway 101 in san mateo when a flatbed truck spilled sodium bisulfate. the hazardous material teams were called in and people living nearby were told to shelter in place. commuter headaches lasted for hours. >> my goodness, i've been in traffic for probably almost two hours, totally unexpected. >> i've been sitting in traffic for about 20, 30 minutes, and that's just from what is the exit right off here until to

this point. >> teams used baking soda to clean up that spill and at one point health leaders called in a relatively low-risk situation. developing right now, screen actors plan to picket in san francisco, along with los angeles and new york city, following yesterday's sag-aftra strike vote. in some cases striking hollywood writers will also join them. here in the bay area, union leaders are organizing an event at noon in san francisco that's taking place and they'll walk to the nearby cable car turnaround near market street. silicon valley based streamers are a big part of the labor conflict, along with pixar in emeryville. let's go to southern california for the very latest on this. bailey miller is in los angeles. tell us what that means for hollywood. >> reporter: good morning,

ginger. yes, we're here outside of sag-aftra headquarters in los angeles and this strike is going to impact a lot of people. as of now, all filming for any movies or shows has been halted, and soon hollywood a-listers, as well as other actors, stunt performers and others will be out here on the picket lines starting at 9:00 this morning. now, what does this strike mean? award shows may be postponed or canceled, as for prime time emmy awards show, variety is reporting that fox is now looking at a january air date for this year's emmy awards instead of september. we've also had a lot of options for shows recently, but that's going to change. the strike will lead to less shows and less content. and as a result, there could be more reality shows like "love is blind" and competition shows to fill those holes. press junkets and film premieres are canceled and we've seen this as the cast of "oppenheimer"

walked out of their premiere when word came down the union would be striking. this was announced yesterday after sag-aftra, the union representing 160,000 actors, stunt performers and more, did not reach an agreement with the alliance of motion picture and television producers. the breakdown in negotiations came down to streaming residuals and ai protections. the president of sag-aftra fran drescher says they had no choice. >> you know, the old contract was based off of shows like "the nanny" that had great longevity and now it's based off of subscriptions, so you don't even get the amount of episodes that we used to get. i used to do 28 episodes. now you're lucky if you get ten. >> it will have a very, very damaging effect on the whole business, and unfortunately -- >> is trike will? >> there's huge collateral damage in the industry to

support services. i could go on and on. >> reporter: that was ceo of disney, bob iger, responding to the strike. the sag-aftra president says it is important to note that the majority of members are working class, working actors, people trying to put food on the table. they say actors are not getting paid enough while streamers are making billions. now, this is the first time since 1960 that both groups, sag-aftra and wga, the writers guild of america, have been on strike together. that's impacting 180,000 people. and the last time sag-aftra was on strike they were striking for three months. so this could go on for some time and we will find out what kind of energy will be out here starting at 9:00 when picketers, actors and other people from this industry will be showing up to make sure their voices are heard. reporting live in los angeles, i'm bailey miller. i'll send it back to you.

>> lots to watch there. thank you so much. 6:40 this morning. and new for you, a reminder about a very real danger, rattlesnakes, especially as bay area temperatures warm up. rangers at lake chabot park say a 35-year-old is in the hospital after he was bitten by a rattlesnake during a hike yesterday morning. warmer temperatures tend to bring more rattlesnakes out of open spaces and hikers are advised to be very careful, especially off of trails. and if you are bitten, stay calm and know where you are. that way you can make sure help arrives to you quickly. if you are heading to santa cruz beaches this weekend, i want you to remember there's an aggressive sea otter roaming near the coastline.

>> it's even harassing kayakers. teams from monterey bay aquarium and fish and wildlife are trying to find this otter, which they say was born in captivity at uc santa cruz. it then moved to the aquarium where it was later released, and now apparently it's a little bit on edge. >> 841 was eventually released in june of 2020 and went a whole year without incident, just living a great otter life. >> so far, the otter hasn't bitten anyone, but if it can be caught, the otter will likely be re-homed at another aquarium. >> those surfboards can be expensive. a lot of people are going to be pushing to the coastlines this weekend because it's going to be hot inland. >> and the coastal areas are going to be nice and mild. let's take a look at the forecast for santa cruz.

we are looking at temperatures that will head for the mid-70s for today and tomorrow, and upper 60s on sunday. it's going to be really perfect weather there. and as you're making plans to head out to the beach, keep in mind that you do need to look at those beach warning flags and see what kind of conditions are out there, and be cautious that that water is very cold, only in the low 50s right now. if you do get caught in a rip current, don't try to fight against the current, just swim parallel to the shore, and then you'll eventually get out of that rip current. you can come back to the coast and never swim alone. keep an eye on everyone around you. apparently i need to add on tips to look out for sea otters, too, that may be hopping on your surfboard. take a look at some of the flags you may see, if it's double red flags it's close to the public, you may have a high hazard. if it's just one red flag. medium hazard for yellow flags and you may see dangerous marine

new at 6:00, more than a half million, or more than a million and a half americans now drive electric cars, and thieves are increasingly targeting the popular cars, stealing one particular pricey part. while gas-powered and hybrid cars are catalytic converters, thieves are eyeing a new target. ev charging cables. one l.a. man said his ring video captured a man removing the charger from his car and unplugging the other end of the cable from the wall and taking off. authorities say these thieves are reselling those cords for scrap metal for expensive copper wiring and to replace the cable it could cost you nearly $3,000. >> did it surprise you how easy and quick it was for him to steal that cable? >> i was shocked. i thought when i locked the car and it's charging, the cord is locked into the car and they can't take it out. >> the plan says his plans are to have a padlock for the wall

clear. it looks hazy there. there's a spare the air alert in effect for a lot of our areas, especially the east bay, where we're seeing a higher measure of particulate matter this afternoon. you're seeing the exhaust from the cars and the ozone and it makes it unhealthy for sensitive groups. santa clara valley will have some unhealthy air quality as our temperatures reach into the mid-80s in san jose. but upper 90s for morgan hill. you can see the range in temperatures here. not as hot for oakland with a high of 77, but a short drive over to martinez and it's 92 and 100 degrees in antioch today. we're going to be in the mid-60s from daly city to half moon bay with mid-70s in san mateo and san francisco reaching 72 downtown. our north bay highs will be in the 60s for bodega bay. that will be one of those getaways because ukiah will be

hitting 102. tomorrow we're going to be very close to the record in some spots. most likely not setting widespread records across the bay area, but well above normal. take a look at concord with highs topping out at 104 degrees tomorrow, and still pretty hot on sunday. we will get some real relief from that heat next tuesday and wednesday as those temperatures come down. i think a lot of people this weekend will be heading to the coastline where it's going to be in the 60s and 70s from santa cruz to monterey, all looking really nice. we compare that to the valley temperatures, up to 104 for saturday, then next week we'll head back to the mid-80s. san francisco is going to see temperatures warming up to a whole 77 degrees on saturday. mike, it seems like it's been friday light for the commute. >> yeah, yeah. it's great, though. the metering lights are on, so that ensures that the bridge will flow smoothly.
