center on fremont street in santa clara. a cooling center that will open in just about an hour from now. cooling centers across the bay area will be needed today. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a peek at our microclimate forecast, and you say today will be hot. >> oh, yes, it will. talking about the buildup to the heat and it is finally here and we will be under a microclimate weather alert starting at 11:00 a.m. because that's when the excessive heat warning starts around the bay area. a live look over san rafael. patchy fog mixing to a very hot day ahead. a battle between fog, patchy fog around the bay area and heat building. 5:00 a.m., 90 degrees in phoenix, arizona. seeing plenty of 90s possibly even triple digits and possibly into the 110s for a lot of us around the bay area as we see

this excessive heat. not only here in the bay area but through the sacramento valley, majority of the state watching for these extreme temperatures. which is also putting air quality at unhealthy, east bay, santa clara valley and what all the numbers mean and, of course, neighborhood-by-neighborhood coming up in a bit. back to you. >> cinthia, thanks. before we talk more about that extreme heat and that excessive heat warning we have learned that two men are in hospitals after shooting each other at an east bay home. it happened before 8:00 last night on the 800 block of margerum drive in brentwood. witnesses told police the men were involved in an altercation before exchanging gunfire. one man suffered serious injuries. the investigation what caused the shooting is ongoing. if you have any information call brentwood police. you may remain anonymous. there was another innocent

victim caught in cross fire on yet another bay area freeway. this time it's an 8-year-old boy who is critical injured in a shooting on 580. chp confirming he is in the hospital in grave condition. he was hit as people in two other cars exchanged gunfire. 580 was closed at harrison avenue near grand several hours. the report today says authorities are trying to find a gunman. >> confusion among thousands of drivers on 580. shut down by chp. later an investigator going from home to home looking at shell casings. oakland near the grand avenue exit. >> a lot of shots. a lot of shots going on. we don't know where they came from. >> reporter: came from 580 nearby where chp said two vehicles, dark colored suv and maroon colored suv exchanged

gunfire. >> we had two vehicles chose to utilize our freeway systems as rolling down battle, as a result of the actions of these two vehicles and the suspects, or occupants these vehicles an incident child was struck by gunfire. anyone can relate with children when a child is struck by gunfire, or -- a violent crime occurs -- it touches you. >> reporter: drivers of the vehicle fled but the damage done. a bullet hit an 8-year-old boy in another vehicle. listening intently. >> not again! oh. this is a freeway i take every day. it could happen. anybody can get hurt. so another baby is hurt. another family got to go through somebody that had nothing to do with nothing. >> reporter: calling his horrific and will do everything

to help apprehend those responsible. as a mother, my heart breaks for the young victim. senseless gun violence impacted far too many lives and when an incident child is harmed it's unfathomable. she had to exit harrison, stuck in traffic two hours. traffic flowing right by gerald's place of work and a message for people that opened fire. >> 2023. stop. stop taking outunnecessary, stop being unnecessary with your life. >> reporter: chp says while all preliminary, the suspect vehicles traveled eastbound, continued eastbound on 580 and one or both of the vehicles may have exited. park if you have information, and, please, call them on their tip line. gia vang, "today in the bay." >> by the way, that was the second freeway shooting in the bay area just yesterday. the chp also is looking for witnesses who may have seen a shooting at the 101-280 split in san francisco near alamene

boulevard. someone opened fire. pulled over after being shot in the leg. paramedics rushed her to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. if you have information call the chp. now back to our other top story and that excessive heat warning for the bay area this weekend. this is a live look across the region where temperatures are cool and mild right now as cinthia said, but parts of the bay area will hit triple digits today. the excessive heat warning is in effect from 11:00 until 11:00 tomorrow night. the bay area air quality management district declared today a spare the air day. which means smog is expected to be unhealthy. you're urged to help reduce air politician driving less, using public transit, carpooling and limit time outside in those smoggy conditions. these hot temperatures are sending people to search for relief at the coast.

for his business. >> looking forward to getting back to better times. to have everything picked up everywhere for everyone. we all need it. >> reporter: reporting for "today in the bay." pg&e preparing for stress on the grid. the utility is mobilizing extra workers and extra equipment in places where triple digits are expected today. the utility says it is not anticipating widespread power outages nor public safety power shutoffs but warn there's could be isolated issues. pg&e is asking people across the bay area to limit use of things like air conditioners this weekend to relieve strain on the grid. coming up, our bob ra gall has tips how to cut down on your usage. local firefighters are hoping to avoid a situation like this. this weekend, crews in riverside county, fighting three large brushfires that ignited yesterday. this so-called rabid fire scored

more than 2,800 acres. the causes of all three fires are under investigation. we have made it easy for you to track the heat here. you can download our free nbc bay area app. see precisely how hot it's going to be in your neighborhood this weekend. going to take you back to the coast now and a dramatic rescue in santa cruz count with a car crashed 300 feet down a cliff. it's that silver car you see center of your screen in the waves there. if happened yesterday afternoon on highway 1 near davenport north of santa cruz. rescue crews from across the county worked together to bring that driver to safety. >> had to rappel down that cliff there, to recover him. along with a couple helicopters. right now coast guard is out there. it's unclear whether or not we have other people that are unaccounted for. that's what we're trying to cover, all our bases.

>> investigators never recovered any other victims from the car. that man, rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. cause of that crash is under investigation. police in the north bay need your help searching for this missing teen who was last seen getting into a ride-share car. fairfield police released this photo of 14-year-old brooke melameeta who disappeared around 5:00 thursday evening after leaving in car from a home on regatta circle. police able to ping her phone and found it less than a mile away but officers have not been able to find brooke. if you have information call fairfield's police. black dust that spewed from the martinez refinery a few days ago does not pose a long-term health risk according to contra costa health officials. they tested the material referred to at coke dust and say lab results show it does not contain high levels of toxic

welcome back. 7:13 on your saturday morning. the sun is shining in san rafael. a beautiful way to start the day. beware. an excessive heat warning going into effect at 11:00 this morning. cinthia pimentel has some triple digits for you coming up. but first, president biden is supporting the thousands of actors and performers who hit the picket line for the s.a.g. after-strike. a white house spokesperson said the president believes all workers including actors deserve fair pay and benefits. there were major demonstrations from hollywood to new york, even here in san francisco. this one, though, at paramount studios in l.a. s.a.g. aftra wants better pay, higher residuals from streaming services and reassurances actors will not be replaced by artificial intelligence.

rattlesnakes. especially as bay area temperatures warm up. rangers at the park in castro valley say a 35-year-old man is in the hospital after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a hike this week. he is listed in serious condition. warmer temperatures tend to bring out more rattlesnakes in open spaces. hikers are advised to be careful. especially off trails. if you are bitten, stay calm or try to. know where you are to make sure you can get help to arrive quickly. tourney now to what many are calling the tiktok baby. she's become social media famous after being born inside her family's bathroom in vacaville. >> reporter: when your sister is 5 centimeters dilated and sent home and has the baby 30 minutes later. >> wow! this tiktok video viewed more than 1 million times. the vacaville woman arrived home after being released from the

cream shop. head to our microclimate forecast. there are more serious details to let you know about with the heat. not only california, the bay area, under the excessive heat. a lot of states around the southwest. dangerous conditions, a lot to watch out for. heat has become the number one heat -- weather fatality in the last couple years. definitely a weekend to pay attention to the forecast. a heat advisory. it doesn't apply to the immediate coast or east bay shoreline but does for rest of us lasting into tomorrow at 11:00 p.m. a lot of time to go. reducing time you spend outdoors, and if you can get around done before 10:00, 11:00 a.m., the sweet spot. could see with heat increase for heat-related illnesses. perfect picture, poor air quality seeing at this hour in dublin. east bay and santa clara valley

unhealthy for those prone to becoming ill with unhealthy air. looking at as far as temperatures go. okay. comfortable coastline. fine. 73 in san francisco. 79 in mountain view. 80 pleasant day out in santa cruz. making our way inland. 99 in martinez and dublin 19. san jose, and where are the triple-dump it temperatures? right here. concord, 104. morgan hill and san martine 103 fairfield and livermore. could possibly be tying records, but might be a few degrees missing that. livermore, 103. record 107 back in 1948. san francisco's definite a long way to go. 73 forecast. 93 set back in the 1800s. into tomorrow also could look at records broken especially as we make our way into the inland valleys. holding on to triple-digit temperatures. it is going to the hot.

a rant. resort fees out of control undeniably. established how inhospitable i feel resort fees are look at five ways to try to beat them. first trick is to check your rate. we recently saw a hotel in honolulu where west coasters could book a special rate that doesn't include a resort fee. the thing is, it wasn't the

first rate the hotel's webside showed. had to click more rates and scroll down to see it. poke around looking. tip, if you already have a reservation you're not necessarily looked into a rate with a resort fee. many hotel reservations can be revised up until the week you arrive. so check to see if you can change your rate now to save money on your vacation. second, comparison shop for package deals. here's one good example. some warehouse clubs offer members hotel deals that do not have a resort fee. third, see if your company has a negotiated hotel rate. many employers, especially big ones, broker deals with hotel chains. part of that negotiation is nixing resort fees and sometimes you can use your corporate rate for leisure travel. thanks, boss. four, see if your loyalty pays. at least one hotel chain waives resort fees for top-tier

forecast. even behind you it doesn't look that good, but, boy, it's going to heat up. >> yes. typical bay area summer start we get out the door with a light jacket and we are just sweating as we go on into the afternoon. look at san francisco. we have that marine layer hanging around. temperature 54 at this hour. going into the east bay, already seeing hazy skies warming up in the east bay already. 60 degrees in livermore and as we go up into the mountains, it's already in 70s and 80s. a lot of people are going to want to escape the east bay and head to the coast. look at half moon bay. a comfortable sunshine-filled day. remember, the water is cold. be careful out there. watch out for kids and everybody else bringing to the coastline. temperatures looking like pleasant out towards the coast. 80 in santa cruz. 81 oakland. look at the triple digits. 103 in fairfield, livermore, 104 morgan hill and 91 in san jose.

an investigation under way in novato that happened at a home on martin way. officers responded they found a man who had been shot and he passed away. two people were detained. if you have any information, call novato p.d. san francisco health leaders intensifying a battle against the fentanyl crisis. the city's director of health says so far this year nearly 80% of overdose deaths in the city are related to fentanyl. last month 53 people died from overdoses. dr. grant coalfax says drug traffickers are increasingly mixing fentanyl with other drugs, like heroin, cocaine and meth to drive addiction and attract needy customers. in response to the crisis city health leaders are expanding medications like methadone and

others to treat drug addict. >> we have been working directly with people on the streets, helping them to start and maintain on these medications. we are also reviewing all research to evolve our response to make sure that any new discoveries that could save lives are quickly translated into practice on the ground. >> fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50-100 times stronger than morphine. a few small grains of fentanyl can kill a person. turning now to a jury convicting the former head of san francisco's public utitilits commission in connenection with briberyy scandadal. federall jurorors found hararla kelly guiuilty off chaharges including conspiracycy, bribery and b bank fraud.d. evidencece shows hee acceptedd s in e exchange for insider information, which influenced the awarding of city contracts. investigators say his access to it was all part of a years' long

at 7:42 under a microclimate weather alert getting ready for triple-ditch i9 temperatures to arrive to a lot more cities around the bay area. already seeing people on the move from the east bay. maybe getting their spot out at the coastline because it's going to be very warm inland. coast, 60s and 70s. remember, the water is cold. never turn your back to the ocean. hot temperatures in livermore and dublin getting into those triple digits. this is bringing a concern for elevated fire danger with hills drying out. winds picking up in the afternoon. so let's not make it any worse as we go out there to do maybe some light yard work around the house. we are already seeing unhealthy air around the bay area.

especially if you live in east bay or santa clara valley and are prone to airborne illnesses or diseases. something to watch out for. staying inside with a fan on that is the way to go on your saturday around the bay area. take a look at our microclimate. about a 30-degree difference. look at that. san francisco 73. fairfield 103 and livermore. 104 in concord and san martin, 90s in fremont, san jose and the peninsula looks okay. the next couple hours getting very warm. good idea that this positively summer event starts at 10:00 a.m. in san francisco. going to be comfortable out there. after this event, let's bring them back inside. going to be a very warm day. i want you to avoid giving dogs exercise during the peak of the heat. say from 11:00 to maybe 6:00 in the afternoon. good time to avoid being outside. give them a lot of fresh, clean water, and if you have any idea where to get cooling pads for a

dog, let me know. i have some to take care of as well. never leave them in the car without air conditioning. just hot all over the bay area. watch out for everybody and watch out for everybody having a good time at the obon festival in mountain view. sunshine, temperatures in 80s. go out enjoy it. evening hours, a pleasant evening out there in mountain view. looking at as far as tomorrow. still triple-digit temperatures in the east bay valleys. 80s an the shoreline east bay and 70s in san francisco. going into monday still warm as we deal with the residual heat from this weekend. i don't see substantial cooling until we get into tuesday and wednesday. then as we look ahead into the weekend, could be another warm one around the bay area. temperatures start to climb into the 90s by friday. if you want to escape it, san francisco, of course, busy but seeing temperatures in the 70s and mild, that breeze kicking in to cool everybody down. >> a beautiful weekend for the final company this weekend.

such year was hottest ever recorded, it's not just a guess. it's true and comes from these famous names. soldier, farmers, everyday people. you and i can go outside record it and could possibly end up in archives some day. >> wow. probably something i will never do but look forward to see if you do anything like that. you mentioned july also could break a record. we are feeling these extreme temperatures here right now. how about other parts of california, even other parts of the world? and the u.s., too. seen all sorts of extreme weather. >> hot and dangerous temperatures. could see records broken maybe in the bay area. definitely california. about to show everyone, still trying to understand and feel just how hot these numbers are, because the national weather service believes that the furnace creek location in death valley rightfully so with that name could get to 129, 130 degrees as we go on into sunday.

if this happens, kira it will be the hottest temperature ever recorded on earth by a reliable source. however, there's beeust a little bit of back and forth on that being the hottest day ever. the guinness world record says that same spot was 134 degrees back in 13. so the anticipation, the heat building and we have to wait and see what happens as we get on into tomorrow. definitely keeping an eye closely o that. of course, i'll bngt to you later on in the evening sunday. >> wow. 134. cinthia, thanks. that is shocking. we have breaking news into our newsroom and want to tell you about the chp investigating a deadly accident on southbound 87 just south of the 280 interchange, this is in san jose. actually happened at 4:30 this morning, but all southbound lanes are currently closed. again, a fatal accident. there's no estimate on when 87 south near 280 will be reopened.

kira? >> wow, willie. 300? congratulations. if you are awake tomorrow morning, hope you can catch willie at 6:0 a.m. and then stick right here for your local news with us on "today in the bay" right after willie at 7:00. turning to a quick look at top stories following here in the bay area including an 8-year-old boy in grave condition after being caught in the cross fire on a bay area freeway. it happened on interstate 580 in oakland at harrison avenue near grand. traffic backed up for hours as authorities investigated last night. the chp tells us people in a dark gray suv and a maroon suv exchanged gunfire. one of those bullets hit the 8-year-old boy in a third car. the chp says one or both of those vehicles may have exited at park street. if you have any information you are urged to call the chp tip line. that is 707-917-4491.

back to the weather. that excessive heat warning telling you about goes into effect at 11:00 this morning. pg&e says it is preparing for stress on the grid. the utility says it has extra workers, extra equipment mobilized in cities where triple digits are expected today. pg&e says it is not anticipating widespread power outages nor public safety power shutoff but warns as always, could be isolated issues. pg&e is asking people across the bay area to limit their power usage this weekend to relieve stress on the grid. cinthia, though, says it will be hot. so people are going to need their a.c., if they even have it. >> yeah. also keeping the shades closed, starting to run that fan early to help you keep your house cool. get you all the details. want to escape the heat, crowded but it will be in the 70s in san francisco. see that breeze kick in tomorrow afternoon to help cool us down.
