flooding, one victim is the mother of two very young children who are still missing this morning our kathy park begins our coverage >> reporter: terrifying weather causing heartache in eastern pennsylvania. >> i can say as a witness to that, in my 44 years, i have never seen anything like it. >> reporter: flash floods quickly moved into the greater philadelphia area saturday night, the national weather service estimated over 3 inches of rain at the height of the storm. >> the sky just opened up and everything dumped out real quick. probably more than anyone could have possibly imagined. >> reporter: in bucks county five people have been confirmed dead, while crews work around the clock to search for a missing baby boy and his toddler sister visiting with their family from south carolina. >> we have recovered the mother and she is one of the deceased also the two children that we are looking for to bring home we are continuing all efforts to find them. >> reporter: by day break sunday

asphalt cracked, trees downed and roads split in two cars flipped upside down eli wiseman and her daughter were swept off their motorcycle. >> floating down the side of the road, clinging to trees and vines, whatever we could, a log, saw cars floating, saw a jeep over like nothing i have ever seen. >> reporter: you were clinging on to trees? >> yeah, i didn't want to die.e. >> r reporter: devastatition fe across the northeaeast as communities grappledwith the sudden onslaught of torrential down tours from scenes like this in connect cuts to pouring rain in massachusetts the extreme weather canceling more than 1,400 flights nationwide as millions from virginia to maine brace for the threat of more flooding. >> our thanks to kathy for that report. meanwhile, there does not seem to be an end in sight for the brutal heat wave
4:04 am
more than 100 million american or about a third of the country are under heat advisories. the warnings are from the northwest to the southern tip of florida. phoenix broke a daily record of 118 degrees. as our san diego station found the temperature of surfaces can be even more dangerous. >> we'rere g going to o get the tempmperature rereading of t the surface e of thihis turf let's take a look. oh, my gosh. 166. >> the heat is also helping to fuel fires in california with a fourth wildfire threatening homes near los angeles and prompting evacuation warnings. the largest is called the rabbit fire, it's destroyed over 7,000 acres and was only 10% contained as of sunday afternoon. this morning there is breaking news out of ukraine reports of explosions at a bridge that connects occupied ukrainian crimea to mainland russia the governor of crimea says on
4:05 am
t telegram that traffic has been halted offer an emergency but did not elaborate. there have been two strikes on that bridge. we want to bring in ali arouzi good morning what more do we know about what happened there >> reporter: good afternoon, jess kachlt that's right, the russians say at least two people were killed in what they were initially saying was an emergency on the kirsch bridge but since then russian investigators and the foreign ministry have released the statement. russian investigators say it was the result of a terrorist act committed by the special forces in kyiv and the foreign ministry says that that decision to attack the bridge by kyiv forces was made in conjunction with the united states and the united kingdom. obviously they haven't provided any evidence to back up those claims, but we have had unconfirmed reports of a big explosion in the early hours of the morning and russian media have released footage of what
4:06 am
they claim was that explosion and this is a very important bridge, jessica, it opened in 2018, it gives road and rail access from russia to crimea in october it was partially closed following a major explosion, but the russians reopened it in february because it's such a strategic supply route for food, fuel and weapons from russia into crimea. now, the head of the russian administration there says that the damage to the bridge wasn't structural, that all of its supports still remain in place, and it was only the surface that was affected, but i'm sure as the day unfolds we will get more information on exact extent of damage on that bridge. >> we also wanted to ask you about the new controversy over the ukrainian grain we understand could have major implications across the globe. >> reporter: that's right. today that deal that allows grain to leave ukrainian ports
4:07 am
was brokered by the u.n. last year is set to expire today. now, this is a big deal because ukraine and russia are amongst the world's top grain exporters and any lack of flow in that grain could seriously affect food supplies around the world, in the middle east, in north africa so far russia has refused to resign that deal so there are major concerns about what's going to happen to grain supplies around the world if the russians don't resign that deal. jessica? >> and two major stories we will be following today ali, thank you. another manhunt for a suspected murderer in pennsylvania has come to an end. fugitive michael burham is back behind bars after nine days on the round. burham is a known survivalist with a military background he is finally back in handcuffs all because a couple's dog wouldn't stop barking. george solis spoke to the couple. >> reporter: what is it when you come face-to-face with the
4:08 am
person everybody is literally looking for? >> oh, my. >> i was scared. >> our immediate thought was call 911, get them here, get him caught and back where he belongs. >> the couple said burham tried to say he was camping but they recognized him immediately police say burham was taken into custody at gunpoint and will be arraigned on an escape charge. it was the moment that changed the course of histstory. 78 years agogo this week a group of scientists in the new mexico desert testing the first nuclear bomb now, a new movie "oppenheimer" from nbc universal is bringing those events to life here is gadi schwartz on that historic moment. >> reporter: the dawn of the nuclear age began 78 years ago with a flash of a man-made sun rising over the new mexico desert it was perhaps the most consequential and dangerous scientific experiment of all time and the man who led it was robert oppenheimer. >> it was needed to put an end to the war and had a chance of
4:09 am
so doing we thought that was the right thing to do. >> reporter: the events of that day now the centerpiece of the new christopher nolan film "o oppenheimer. the movie creating the test on july 16, 1945. >> are we saying there's a chance when we push that button we destroy the world >> chances are near zero >> near zero >> what do you want? >> zero would be nice. >> there are 100 things that could be done wrong, any one of which as far as we knew we knew pretty much could make the test a failure. >> reporter: but the test was a success and in its aftermath scientists say the ground at ground zero turned to glass by the heat of the explosion and the earth sunk by 9 feet. >> we knew the world would not be the same. few people laughed, few people cried, most people were silent. >> reporter: just three weeks later the next time the bomb was
4:10 am
used was in hiroshima and nagasaki, forcing the japanese to surrender and changing the world forever. >> i remembered the line from the hindu scripture, now i have become death, the destroyer of worlds i suppose we all thought that one way or another. >> reporter: gadi schwartz, nbc news. >> fascinating look at history. the rain and heat aren't letting up just get. let's get to meteorologist michelle grossman with more on that. >> good morning. we are looking at the heat continuing for the fourth week straight, we are looking at temperatures soaring into the triple digits. lots of alerts across the west, the south central states, also the chance for severe weather today. let's start with the heat, we are looking at 12 states affected, also 62 million americans under a heat alert, whether it's a heat advisory, that's in the orange, an excessive heat warning is in the hot pink, we will see temperatures really soaring. we have that area of high pressure in control, it's bringing in this heat, phoenix today 116, that could tie a record of 116 if we go higher than that we will break that

las vegas 114, we are looking at san angelo 106, corpus christi 100 degrees today and new orleans into the mid 90s you tack factor in the humidity it will feel warmer than that. tomorrow san antonio 104, the record could too i it there, new orleans into the upperu factor especially in southern florida it will feel like over 100 degrees. all right. so the heat continues, we do have some storm chances today and we will look at the rest of the forecast for the week in just a few minutes. >> thank you. still to come, it's so hot outside but the trend known as revenge spending is starting to cool down. but first a passenger saves sssshutta aslalaininh ndg maacacses. ♪thenen you take e me by the ♪
