of the bay area as you get ready to head out the door, with temperatures in the upper 50s in san francisco. that's where we did have the cooler temperatures over the weekend and that continues today. our valleys are still going to have some warm weather, with some upper 80s and low 90s, reaching 95 in livermore today, 94 in concord and 94 in santa rosa. looking at tomorrow, those temperatures continue to come down. we're back to some more seasonable weather with some mid-80s. we've also been tracking quite a bit of some unusual activity with showers and even some thunderstorms and lightning farther to the north. that was yesterday evening. now the activity has quieted down, but it did get quite busy for a while in parts of northern sonoma, lake and mendocino counties with lightning strikes that came through. we're still monitoring for the potential of any fires that could be smoldering there in the brush. so we'll continue to monitor that as we go throughout the day. >> those dry lightning concerns that you just mentioned, they're just the latest heat related

issue following a weekend where power surges led to outages. bob redell is live in tri-valley, it's going to be a hot one out there today, meaning more fire concerns. >> reporter: correct. good morning, to you. we're in downtown pleasanton, it's only 5:00 as you're well aware, and in my car thermometers are reading 73 degrees. we expect it to rise another 20 degrees once the sun does come up. this is video from the santa rosa fire department. this shows lightning yesterday in the north bay. the concern, of course, of those igniting dry brush and causing a wildfire. firefighters are asking us to keep an eye out for smoke or flames wherever you are in the bay area. don't assume someone else has reported it. if you are seeing something, call 911 immediately. this is time lapse video of a 16-acre wildfire burning right

now north of sacramento. cal fire is aware of it. they've been reporting on it and they are sending firefighters to the scene. it's a remote. they're trying to get access. as you mentioned, the hot weather did cause a number of power outages across our region. pg&e says it is making progress in restoring electricity. you can see the outage is east of castro valley and hayward, down to just under 200 customers. there are still a number of smaller outages scattered throughout the south bay. earlier yesterday you might recall nearly 2,500 customers were in the dark in walnut creek but pg&e has turned the lights on for most customers. the weather was hot enough to cause problems for the national weather service in the bay area yesterday. the agency tweeted out its radar was out and the radar equipment is near san jose. and with the radar being turned off for hours, the national weather service was forced to monitor weather through offshore

satellites and a nearby radar. in san jose the hot weather sent about 50 people in the cooling center over the weekend, that included this woman who ended up there. she has no air-conditioning in her house in san jose. so when the mercury started rising, the 82-year-old woman says her health started going downhill. >> in the afternoon it was so hot and i feel like my head is growing something inside, and then i feel so weak like i'm going to faint. >> reporter: and jenny knows firsthand the impacts of high temperatures. during the last heat wave the first weekend in july, jenny ended up in a hospital emergency room with severe dehydration. and, again, as i was mentioning earlier, here in the tri-valley it's going to be well over 90 degrees today. something to keep an eye out and stay inside if you can. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> head over to our nbc bay area app. that way you're going to get the

weather forecast for your neighborhood sent right to your smartphone and you'll also receive those breaking news updates. 5:05 right now. in a surprise development, it now appears the days of bay area thoroughbred horse racing are numbered, after more than 80 years the operators of golden gate park yesterday announced plans to close at the end of the current season. it means no more horse racing after october 2nd. ownership plans to focus, instead, on its southern california operations. one member of the california horse racing board says the big concern right now is for track workers likely to lose their jobs. >> we're going to be pressing the industry, you know, to find out what they intend to do to help those people. we're very concerned about that. >> in a statement, track ownership says it is committed to honoring labor obligations and developing a meaningful transition plan. golden gate fields opened in

1941. the bay area's other longtime racetrack, bay meadows, closed 15 years ago, after opening in 1934. turning to decision 2024 and the race for president, in six months the first dominos will start to fall with the iowa caucus. but in some cases some of the early gop contenders are already starting to show signs of financial weakness. "today in the bay"'s alice barr is live in washington. certainly a lot of people are saying that the key for lesser-known challengers really hoping to get noticed in the upcoming debate. >> reporter: they're turning to creative measures to do that, marcus, from gift cards to soccer tickets. but taking the big headlines first, the new fundraising numbers show us that former president trump is still far ahead of his gop rivals, though at this stage president biden doubled the trump haul. with the iowa caucus six months away, new fundraising numbers

while miami mayor francis suarez is traveling off a front row seat to see soccer legend lionel messi's debut. >> i'm not going to have the opportunity to keep having this conversation unless i have your support. >> reporter: former president trump threatening to skip the first debate, already looking ahead to taking on president biden. and in order to make the debate stage next month, republican candidates have to secure 40,000 unique donors in addition to meeting certain polling criteria and promising to support whoever becomes the gop nominee. >> that race is on. alice barr in washington, thank you so much. it is 5:08 right now. one south bay family opening up about losing everything in a weekend house fire. it happened saturday afternoon on swanson lane in gilroy. family members are thankful no one was injured, but now they're struggling with losing all but the clothes on their backs.

>> we lost everything in the house, all our clothes, all our furniture, the home. all of that is replaceable. but it's hard when you lose pictures and memories of your family, you know. >> the cause of that fire is still under investigation. well, the state fair is off and running in sacramento and you had to brave some serious triple-digit heat if you visited over the weekend. if you didn't make it, it runs through july 30th. some of those visitors say that the fun fair outweighs the potential discomfort. organizers are trying to make sure people stay cool with cooling stations and more than a dozen air-conditioned indoor exhibits, not to mention plenty of cold beverages. >> you get the heat and those animals out there. yep, that spells fair. taking a live look outside, probably the coolest part of your day is right now, before the sun's arrival.

taking a live look outside at san jose. >> we're starting to see the sun coming up. a few clouds here and there. it's going to be slightly lower compared to what we had over the weekend. let's head up to san rafael with a live look outside as you get ready to get this monday started. temperatures in the upper 50s right now. it does already start to feel a little warmer compared to what we're used to seeing at this point. and our temperatures will go from upper 50s to low 60s, we'll be at 67 at 9:00, and some upper 70s at noon. so it will be heating up again this afternoon. but it's starting to ease up just a little bit in comparison to those triple digits we had for the inland valleys over the weekend. santa rosa today headed for 94, it will be 88 degrees in novato and 89 in dublin. also 89 in san jose and los gatos reaching 92 degrees today. you can see these numbers coming down tomorrow, with mostly 60s and 70s for san francisco over toward the parts of the inner bay and the east bay, but then

the time is 5:15, as you get ready to head out in the east bay we're checking out pleasant hill. it's in the mid-60s, a little warmer to start and it will be clear and sunny throughout the day. it will heat up again but not as hot as it has been. we'll be at 84 degrees at lunchtime. we'll get a look at the rest of the microclimate forecast coming up. your drive times are looking good. it's been smooth around the bay area. a look at the east bay drive times, we are going to see looking good from westbound 80 to highway 4 to the bay bridge, takes you about 14 minutes. another update in a few minutes. wall street is set for a mixed open ahead of a busy week of earnings. the markets are coming off a winning week with the dow rising more than 2%, its best gain since march. the s&p 500 also rising more than 2% and the nasdaq up more than 3%, pushing them to their

highest levels since last april. the move is coming on the back of solid earnings from big banks and cooler than expected inflation data. in focus this week, data on retail sales and housing. earnings season also picks up with more than 50 companies in the s&p and five dow stocks reporting. the list includes bank of america, goldman sachs, ibm, netflix and tesla. united airlines has struck a tentative deal on a new contract with its pilots that would provide raises up to 40%. it also includes changes to work rules and giving pilots more flexibility with more schedules. pilot unions at delta and american have also reached new contract deals that include significant pay raises and other benefits. airlines are reporting record revenues following the severe downturn during the pandemic. but they've often been strained to meet demand, racing to hire and train more pilots after encouraging many to retire early. and tesla's first cyber truck rolls off the assembly

line in texas this weekend, after more than two years of delays. a prototype of the futuristic electric pickup truck was unveiled in 2019. production has been repeated by pushed back due to what tesla says were supply chain issues. musk said the first cyber trucks would be made this year with a ramp-up in production starting in 2024. it's tesla's biggest new vehicle launch since the model y in 2020. back over to you. >> can't wait to see them on the roads. new this morning, google is reminding people that there's more than one pathway to land your dream job. they offer self-paced training programs teaching skills the company says can transfer to places, including google. so it is called google career certificate program and it has courses in cybersecurity, data

smoke continues to push into the north bay. you saw a little bit of it yesterday, but it may be a little thicker today and making it unhealthy, especially as we see some of the plumes of smoke starting to move through ukiah, clear lake into santa rosa and napa during the afternoon. so heads up about that that you do want to limit your time outside. the other big story has been the extreme heat. take a look at phoenix. today it's headed for 115 degrees, just unbearably hot in this long stretch of hot weather. and for us we're going to see temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s this afternoon. the heat is backing off just a bit and even more so for tomorrow, with highs in the upper 70s for fremont, 86 in concord, and scotts valley reaching 77 degrees, with san francisco in the mid-60s. so we are looking much better there. but take a look at death valley and the record that they broke

yesterday. 128 degrees. that was the daily high temperature record and the hottest temperature ever recorded there is 134 degrees. so it wasn't too shy of that. so it's going to be still very hot these next few days, but at least here we're seeing temperatures come down before another spike in temperatures for the end of the week. so the nice little cooldown doesn't last that long. we're going from mid-90s to mid-80s, then back up to mid-90s and then upper 90s for the end of the week. for san francisco we're looking at low 70s. it's going to be cooler there, definitely, over the next few days. as you get ready to head out on the roads this morning, a couple of issues we've been watching. we're seeing still the backup building out of the altamont pass coming into livermore, so that's getting extended a little bit more, more cars out there on the roads. and then looking at san jose, we do still have that crash on northbound 680, the middle lane was blocked. hopefully they're moving that

francisco, it's 60 in oakland, 64 in martinez. it's already 79 this morning in vacaville, as you get up and get ready to head out the door. here is a look at morgan hill and what to expect over the next several hours. temperatures in the upper 50s, low 60s. it will be 79 at 11:00, 82 at noon, our high temperatures for the south bay head for the mid-80s, the peninsula reaching 78 degrees, and 93 in the tri-valley. it's still going to be hot for the inland areas, but watching those drifts of smoke in the north bay. i'll have more on the air quality concerns as well as some slightly cooler temperatures in our forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. developing this morning, an 8-year-old boy recovering after the latest freeway shooting in oakland. for some, it's adding a new layer to a growing recall conversation. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is here with the new response from the woman at the center of debate. alameda county district attorney

pamela price is who we're talking about here, kris. what is she saying? >> i want to start by saying that the 8-year-old little boy who was shot in a car on friday while on the freeway remains in grave condition. the boy was caught in the cross fire of a smooth on eastbound 580 near oakland and is now at ucsf childrens' hospital. chp shut down the freeway near harrison street to investigate for about six hours. district attorney pamela price has been criticized for her prosecution in prior freeway shootings, including that of jasper wu, the toddler killed by a stray bullet while sitting in his car seat in his mother's car. price was criticized for not pursuing life without parole against the two men charged with his murder. but d.a. price told nbc bay area that her prosecution is dependent on the proof that the chp can provide. >> we know that when we get an opportunity to hold someone accountable for that, we are

doing that, we're doing it in the jasper wu case, we're doing it in the case out of union city. we are doing that. freeway shooting is not okay. shooting anyone in alameda county is not okay. but freeway shootings definitely represent a danger to public safety, and i know that the chp does what they can to try to solve these homicides, and when it happens then we're going to prosecute people. >> reporter: so now the shooting on eastbound 580 was on friday and we now know that district attorney pamela price is also the subject of a recall effort, and that is in its early stages. but she says that she is citing her successes, she says he's cleared a backlog of cases, she's hired more than 80 staff members and she is working to increase staff as well. she does say that the recall

effort is unfortunate, however she's saying that she is doing a good job in her first six months. that recall effort is under way. her tenure is also, again, only in office for six months. >> back to you. >> i'm answering to the whole county, but i'm particularly answerable to those who voted for me. and since we won, i'm going to keep my promises and i think that's been terrifying for the people who lost. >> reporter: she says she's trying to keep her promises to the people who voted for her, as she ran on a platform of criminal justice reform. she said that the people who are behind the effort did not vote for her. she's accountable to all people in alameda county, however she says she is focused on the promise she made to the people who elected her. >> a lot to cover there. thank you very much, kris. 5:35 right now. happening today, jury selection is set to begin in the trial of a former san jose state athletic trainer accused of sexual

assault. scott shaw is accused of sexually assaulting student-athletes. federal investigators say it happened as far back as 2009. initial complaints came from athletes on the swim team. the mercury news reports the accusations are more widespread and may extend to athletes in other sports. shaw pleaded not guilty to six misdemeanors. if convicted, he could face up to six years. housing advo kids are worried about a surge in evictions. the eviction moratorium lasted more than three years, starting in march of 2020. this means landlords are now allowed to take tenants to court over unpaid rent during that time. housing advocates fear it may lead to a spike in homelessness. emeryville police are hoping two surveillance images can help track down four violent armed robbers. yesterday they posted a photo of one of the suspects and the

alleged getaway car, a hyundai sedan. the four men were involved in two armed robberies in san pablo yesterday. in one of those cases they shot a victim in the leg. the head of the teamsters union is asking the white house not to intervene as u.p.s. workers go on strike. the union representing 340,000 u.p.s. employees. talks have been at a standstill for more than a week, and to avoid a strike a new agreement must be reached by the end of the month. this would be the first u.p.s. labor action since a 15-day walkout paralyzed the company in 1997. with no new talks on the horizon, the two prolonged strikes shutting down hollywood appears to now be just at a standstill. >> screen actors have joined hollywood writers on the picket line. leaders in both unions argue streamers and studios are pivoting away from paying the

same residuals to talent. one insider said hollywood is nothing like it was last time both unions went on strike at the same time. >> the last time the writers and actors were on strike together in 1960, when, by the way, ronald reagan was the president of the actors union and dwight eisenhower was in the white house, that went on for a long time. it's a very different world, obviously, now. now we're looking at competing interests and long-term gain. the industry is evolving at a rapid pace and the studios to hold on to their power and market share, they're determined to not let every contract cycle turn into a strike. >> now, later on "today" we go inside the standstill at the negotiation table. that's coming up at 7:00 this morning right after "today in the bay." well, firefighters in southern california are stretched thin. they are fighting four separate fires in riverside county, the largest is called the rabbit fire.

it's burned close to 8,000 acres since friday near mystic lake. perhaps some good news here from firefighters, yesterday they stopped the progress and containment last night grew to 25%. now, in yosemite firefighters are fighting an out of control fire burning near north dom not far from the world famous half dome, and as of last night that fire has burned 650 acres. rangers say a lightning strike started it more than two weeks ago and conditions there are making the fight more challenging. smoke from the fire also impacting the air quality. new this morning, new concerns about the potential drop off firefighters if congress failed to lock in higher wages. the issue has long been a problem in california. the u.s. forest service pays about half of what an agency like cal fire offers and now organizers with one federal workers union are calling it a crisis. they say up to half the roughly

11,000 federal firefighters across the nation may leave in the coming years if pay rates do not get a permanent bump. the current temporary pay hike is set to expire in september. fire concern is something we're worried about here in the bay area. >> absolutely, after the fire strikes yesterday we haven't heard anything, but sometimes it takes a while as some of the brush smolders. it's so dry and there's a lot of vegetation. we've been monitoring for a fire in oregon that's been pushing smoke our way. it is a nice, clear start this morning. we'll get a live look at the golden gate bridge. it's going to be a colorful sunrise. so take a look at the forecast. we have drifts of smoke around ukiah yesterday and it's being pushed down into the bay area. as we go into today it may be a little worse. our air quality worsening due to -- you can see the concentration of the smoke up there by oregon and it's been pushed down into the north bay.

we're going to see it coming through in a couple of waves. so monitoring for that as well as the heat, as our temperatures reach into the low to mid-90s for the inland valleys, reaching 94 in concord. as you head to oakland, much milder with a high of 77. 75 in san mateo, and san francisco today will reach 68 degrees. we'll cool down more tomorrow. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. as you get ready to head out on the roads, it looks like it's flowing pretty well across the san mateo bridge. although it seems like there's a lot more people up and out the door early this morning. your drive time is starting to slow down on the bay bridge. it takes about ten minutes. not too bad as of yet. most likely the metering lights are getting ready to come on. we're seeing smooth traffic across the bay area, just a bit of the backup in usual spots around the bay area this morning. in the tri-valley your drive time is slowing down from grant line road to i-680, it takes you about 25 minutes. another update coming up again

good monday morning to you. the time is 5:44, as you head to work in mountain view. it starts out clear and temperatures in the mid-60s. a little warmer compared to what we usually see and it's going to be a really nice, comfortable day, with mid-70s at lunchtime. it will still be hot in the valleys. we'll get a look at the spread in our temperatures in our microclimates coming up in a few minutes. temperatures are not the only thing on the rise these days. doctors say so are summer colds. many of which can be prevented. doctors are seeing an increase in colds that are mostly mild, but can lead to respiratory problems, including sneezing and congestion. oftentimes the reason for the surge is people forgetting the kind of safety protocols that got everyone through the

pandemic. >> it's basically we are not masking, we're not hand washing as much. >> another reason for that spike, doctors say pandemic protocols that prevented viruses from spreading have now been lifted. everyone is advised to wash their hands and be extra safe, mask up in crowded places. an urgent call from one south bay animal shelter, which says that it will have to euthanize some animals if they're not adopted by 6:00 p.m. tonight. san martin animal shelter is at full capacity and it's making a new plea for adoptions one week after the humane society of silicon valley offered adoptions of cats for $20. the facility opens at 12:00 this afternoon. well, steph curry is asking everyone what's better, sinking a buzzer-beater or an eagle to win a popular golf tournament?

done. >> it's so hard. so we're able to go outside, exercise at least early in the day while these temperatures are cooler, and take a look at the range in temperatures that we're already seeing as you get ready to get up and step out the door. it's 58 degrees in san francisco, the cool spot, but it's 63 in napa and 65 in san jose and 71 in livermore. look at vacaville, starts out the morning at 79 degrees. that's a warm start there. it's going to be another hot one for the inland valleys. so make sure you're staying hydrated today. if you do have to work outside, try to stay in the shade and don't forget that sunscreen today. and dressing cool means wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing. a hat also helps. take care of those pets. we're still dealing with hot asphalt, as well as very hot temperatures during the middle of the day. as we take a look at our highs this afternoon, santa rosa heads for 94 degrees, but it will still be in the 60s in san francisco. san mateo at a comfortable 75

there, and 89 in san jose. we'll be reaching into the low 90s in livermore this afternoon. we're going to bring it down several more degrees for tomorrow so it's nice to see the cooldown for at least a little while. back to more seasonable weather, but still warm in the valleys with upper 80s, fairfield hitting 89 degrees tomorrow, as well as wednesday, before we get another heat-up in those temperatures. so this high pressure is pretty persistent across the southwest. it's caused some record-high temperatures and a very long stretch of hot weather across parts of arizona and nevada and some of that heat every now and then starts to nudge its way into the bay area. we're going to see some of our inland temperatures deal with heat once again, especially by the end of the week. nice cooldown for midweek, but look at the end of the week. by friday we're seeing gilroy hitting 90 degrees and still in the upper 80s throughout the weekend. overall our inland temperatures will go back down and then up as we head toward friday, reaching the peak of the temperatures

with some upper 90s in a few spots and then low 90s for the weekend. a look at san francisco, where we're going to see temperatures in the upper 60s, a nice cooldown for tomorrow, but then by the end of the week we start to see some low 70s there, much more sunshine, not as much fog. but overall we're not going to see a big spike in temperatures here in the city. on the roads this morning, a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, just about ten minutes ago they turned on the metering lights. we're just seeing a couple of lanes slowing down a bit. overall across the bay area it's been pretty quiet for a monday morning with a lot more people out there. looking at highway 4 to 680 from pittsburg to walnut creek takes you about 30 minutes. maybe time to grab that coffee and get out the door. kirker pass road from pittsburg to walnut creek takes you about 21 minutes. and the tri-valley starting to slow down on westbound 84 from
